Don’t Try This at Home: Hugo’s 2020 Defensive Tackle Board

-by Hugo

[ADMIN’S NOTE: Don’t forget to send in your mock draft entries before the draft starts tonight!]

Before the rankings, a few editorial notes:

  • This time around, please do try this at home!
  • I am an NFL fan first, and this board is not ordered specifically to the Patriots, but rather is how I see the value of the players at large. If there is a discrepancy between a player’s utility to NE and to other teams, I will make note of that.
  • In past offseasons, I have used a tiered system to grade prospects, where Tier 1 is picks 1-15, Tier 2 is 16-45, Tier 3 is 46-75, Tier 4 is 76-105, Tier 5 is day 3/PFA, and Tier 6 is UDFA. This is explained in past big boards. Because this class is weaker than usual, I will stick to the more traditional 1st round, 2nd round, 3rd round grades.

1. Javon Kinlaw (South Carolina)
6’5”, 324 lbs

Strengths:
Explosive first step, gets out of his stance and into the gap or the pads of his opponent with freakish quickness
Good in space for a DL, looks like he was a LB before a growth spurt, takes angles that contain the QB rather than over-pursuing, quick to recognize screens and find the ball
Doesn’t miss tackles
Reportedly was the most unblockable DL at the Senior Bowl practices.
Has a large frame with long arms, lots of physical projection. 22 years old.

Weaknesses:
Poor at the point of attack, doesn’t play with great leverage, gets shoved around a lot for a top guy.
Doesn’t get extension and keep blockers off his frame, finesse rather than power.
Explosive first step doesn’t necessarily come with great timing off the snap.
Has the frame to play two gaps, but I don’t think he ever will.

Overall:
Kinlaw isn’t as close to being what he could be as Derrick Brown, but I suspect NFL teams are salivating at the prospect of getting their hands on him, because of the room he has to grow physically and improve. He reminds me of Eagles DT Fletcher Cox. I think he is going to surprise and be the first DT off the board. For the record, I think the Pats, who value space-eating skill sets, would take Brown over him.
Grade: 1st round

2. Derrick Brown (Auburn)
6’4”, 326 lbs

Strengths:
Possesses nose tackle bulk at close to 6’5”, absolute mountain of a man. 22 years old.
Brutish upper body strength, bludgeons OL backwards while standing up.
Can take on doubles without giving an inch of grass.
Should be able to impact the game on passing downs without being a penetrator with his powerful hands.

Weaknesses:
Plays out of control, often runs himself out of plays, misses tackling opportunities when the ball is in his area.
Production as a run defender doesn’t equal the talent.
Limited range as a defender.
Stamina is a question. Will he be physically able to play a number of snaps that corresponds with the investment you are making?

Overall:
Derrick Brown has elite size and functional traits for a 3-down NT. He reminds me of Eddie Goldman on the Bears, a prospect I liked a lot. There’s some legitimate concerns about what the ceiling of his value is, for two reasons. One, he isn’t a pass rusher, although I could see him being an impactful player on passing downs because of his tools. Two, the number of snaps he can play a game will dictate how much value he can contribute.
Grade: 1st round

3. Raekwon Davis (Alabama)
6’6”, 315 lbs

Strengths:
Long arms, imposing figure.
Plays with good leverage for his height.
Natural two-gap defender, uses his length to keep himself clean.
Demonstrates unusual good ability to chase plays for a DT.
Played under Nick Saban, potentially easing his transition to the Patriots. Experience at different techniques.

Weaknesses:
Character concerns. Flatlined somewhat after freshman year. Is he serious about football?
Height leaves him exposed sometimes.
Tight-hipped, linear sort of athlete. Can he be effective on stunts and twists?
Pass-rushing value will have to come from power, lacks the quickness and balance to knife into gaps consistently

Overall:
Davis followed an underwhelming college trajectory, but in an age where the NFL is grappling with the problem of defending spread style attacks, I believe his length, anchor strength, and ability to run in space make him an intriguing lineman. I see Davis as a unique candidate in this draft to anchor the run defense of a spread-stopping 2-4-5 – a roving DL who can 2-gap and run. I think he would be a good fit for the Pats and would be pleased to see them scoop him up in the 1st round, despite the reservations of the rest of the draft media.
Grade: 1st round

4. Ross Blacklock (TCU)
6’3”, 290 lbs
(on the smaller side for a defensive tackle)

Strengths:
Plays incredibly low. Best low man in the class. Superb pad level.
Moves well laterally, has agile feet. Maintains his leverage by moving his feet well.
Can make himself skinny to rush the passer, difficult to get hands on with his combo of pad level and technique.

Weaknesses:
Small for a DT. Short arms make it difficult for him to reach blockers.

Overall:
Coming out of a defense that is more professional in style than a lot of college teams, Blacklock is a very polished player, and the best 3-technique prospect behind Kinlaw. His game is predicated on avoiding blocks, rather than sustaining them. I like him as a 4-3 DL, but I do not think he would be an option for New England. I see him being a good fit on a Wade Phillips sort of defense.
Grade: 2nd round

5. Justin Madubuike (Texas A&M)
6’2”, 293 lbs
(lean defensive tackle, looks smaller than his listed weight)

Strengths:
Good pad level, lots of strength, plays bigger than his size.
Heavy-handed punch, has the ability to drive offensive lineman.
Has the tools to become a good technician in the pros.
Got stronger as games went on at TAMU, made big plays in the 4th quarter.

Weaknesses:
Often the last man moving off the snap, limiting his ability to shoot gaps.
Lets blockers into his frame often.
Lacks repertoire of pass rush moves to string together, relies on strength. Needs technical development.

Overall:
I was pleasantly surprised by watching cut-ups of Madubuike. He is a 3-technique prospect who demonstrates the skills to play on every down. He is not a freak, but he is toolsy enough to play in the NFL. I think he will go pretty high because of his every-down ability. He looks like the kind of interior DL that Rod Marinelli’s scheme on the Dallas Cowboys would utilize.
Grade: 2nd round

6. Marlon Davidson (Auburn)
6’3”, 303 lbs

Strengths:
Weird build you don’t see often. Wide body and short-ish arms.
Bizarrely good-looking at DE. Played on the edge in college. Has edge rushing ability.
Fluid athlete, can drop back into coverage in shallow areas, can run and chase.
Demonstrates balance and coordination
Uses his hands proficiently.
Turns 22 after the draft. Youngest player on this list.

Weaknesses:
Short arms, looks maxed out physically.
Played some DT in college but was more of an edge defender, role will change at the next level
Weak base, looks like he’ll get washed out versus the run often.
The concern is he will get swallowed up by the giants who play LT in the NFL. Was invisible versus Penei Sewell of Oregon (Outland trophy winner and future top pick) – glimpse of the future?

Overall:
Davidson is probably the most interesting guy in the draft. A charismatic 4 year starter, who has a very unique combination of strengths and weaknesses. I can’t really think of an NFL prospect to compare him to, which is unusual. Maybe Marcus Hardison? I’m not sure what he is, but he’s definitely a football player. And doesn’t that sound like someone who ends up on the Pats?
Grade: 2nd round

7. Davon Hamilton (Ohio State)
6’4”, 320 lbs

Strengths:
NFL body, strength and bulk to not get mauled by double teams.
Can drive back linemen consistently 1 on 1.
Light on his feet. Good awareness of cut blocks.
Uses his hands well to get blockers out of his pads.

Weaknesses:
Pad level isn’t very good.
A bit underpowered, pass rushing may not translate.
Gets washed out by double teams too often for a NT.
What is his niche in the NFL?

Overall:
Scheme-diverse tackle who isn’t good enough in any area to really stand out, but doesn’t have any noticeable holes in his game. Probably one of the safer Day 2 prospects.
Grade: 3rd round

8. James Lynch (Baylor)
6’3”, 289 lbs

Strengths:
Often the first man moving off the snap, explosive get-off.
Strong punch, rocks back offensive linemen regularly.
Motor runs hot, he chases plays far downfield, looks like he might be crazy which is always a good trait for a football player to have.
Possible 5-tech candidate.

Weaknesses:
Smaller end of the spectrum, will be restricted to penetrating role in the NFL.
All effort, does not demonstrate good technique. Doesn’t shed blocks any way other than driving through them.
Runs himself out of plays, very out of control.

Overall:
Strong, athletic and mean, Lynch has qualities you like in an NFL lineman. His level of play does not match his traits. I would take him in the 3rd round. I like his developmental potential, and on the Pats he could possibly play more than other teams in a role similar to Adam Butler.
Grade: 4th round

9. Larrell Murchison (NC State)
6’2”, 297 lbs

Strengths:
Fluid athlete. Quick feet allow him to maintain leverage.
Demonstrates balance and coordination. Executes spin move and swim to beat blocks as a pass rusher.
Gets under defenders effectively. Not a waist bender. Plays bigger than he is.

Weaknesses:
Average athlete for his size, smoother than powerful.
Undersized for a space eater, not quick for a penetrator.
Looks like he will struggle with stunts at the next level, a big staple of the NE playbook.

Overall:
Murchison is a fire hydrant of a tackle whose wrestling abilities in the trenches give him the potential to carve out a niche as a 1-tech NT, or a run-stopping specialist at DT. He will have to overcome his pedestrian combination of size, quickness and power, and this makes him a lower pick.
Grade: 4th round

10. Jordan Elliott (Missouri)
6’3”, 302 lbs

Strengths:
Projectable frame, looks like he could put on weight and get stronger.
Has athleticism, can slither through gaps.
Shows sudden quickness, good swim move for a college DT.

Weaknesses:
Comes off the ball high.
Weak punch, doesn’t deliver a jarring blow .
Gets engulfed by blockers, doesn’t stack and shed well, ability to two-gap is in doubt.
Taller than long, a bit of a waist bender.

Overall:
Jordan Elliott is more of a project player. I think with some physical development, he could become a good DT in the 4-3, once his body catches up to his athleticism.
Grade: 4th round

11. McTelvin Agim (Arkansas)
6’2”, 309 lbs
Was the #2 strongside DE recruit out of HS and widely considered the best recruit in program history. 22 years old.

Strengths:
Plays with good leverage
Flashes explosive power to
Performed well at the East-West Shrine game.

Weaknesses:
Needs to bulk up to play a high snap count at DT
Clumsy hand-fighting skills
Lacks balance, reaches to get low and is easily taken out by chip blocks
Doesn’t show

Overall:
Agim, who was shuffled between defensive tackle and defensive end at Arkansas, is a developmental player with a wide range of outcomes. He is not an NFL DT at present, but could grow vs both the run and pass with physical development and technical maturation. I don’t think the Patriots will be interested in him.
Grade: 5th round

12. Neville Gallimore (Oklahoma)
6’2”, 304 lbs

Strengths:
Good NFL size, not undersized for any role on the line.
Ran a blazing 40-yard dash, for what it is worth.
Canadian, might have less experience than his peers.
Quick first step.

Weaknesses:
Doesn’t show much power, gets pushed around by blockers most of the time.
Rarely won quick at OU, mostly made splash plays on looping pass rush games.
Weak punch and mediocre length, doesn’t look capable of really controlling blockers at a high level.
Looks like a big project for a player who was statistically productive in college.

Overall:
Underwhelming relative to his draft prognostications.Gallimore looks like a player whose greatest asset (NFL size) served him well at the D1 level, but lacks functional traits to play in the NFL. I would not draft him.
Grade: 5th round

Assorted other day 3 guys:

Teair Tart (FIU)
Good first step. Gets great extension on tape, shows technique to find the ball and discard blockers. Showed well at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. Low level of competition – can he play with the big boys? Character concerns too (hence being at CC to begin with).

Rashard Lawrence (LSU)
6’2” 308 lbs. Longer, leaner defensive lineman who played all over the line at LSU under Ed Orgeron. Doesn’t appear to do anything well enough to carve out a role as a rotational player in the NFL.

Raequan Williams (Michigan State)
Mean NT who plays through the whistle, and has unusual stamina for a bigger man. Not that effective of a widebody, and looks unlikely to fill a NT niche in the NFL.

So, second free agency starts today as the compensatory system no longer applies. Teams are beginning to pare veterans and make cap cuts. Post draft could in the works. And the remaining FA class is pretty substantial especially on defense. This would be quintessential Belichick KMart shopping/ blue light special stuff right here.

It would have to be with <$2M in cap space.

I’m going to go blue in the face here… the Patriots can and will open up cap space and could easily free $10-15M.

“New England Patriots fullback James Develin announced his retirement from football on Monday, citing “unforeseen complications” from a neck injury that sidelined him for the majority of the 2019 season.” -Mike Reiss Sad to see Delvin go but I have seen Patriots up close that have had serious neck injuries and it is not pretty. It is dangerous. I saw Andy Katzenmoyer close up while at training camp for the Patriots with a scar that went entirely around his neck. A few days latter he retired. I don’t think negotiating your own contract is likely to catch on, unless you are on Houston’s roster, This is bent. A player without an agent reset the market. BO’B is an idiot.

Some folks call 2020 a rebuild year for the Pat’s. Others call it a retool year. I call it a “bridge” year. They’ll do the best they can for roster building but cap restraints will limit them in 2020 while in 2021 the cap space should get a whole lot better for roster building.

The Pats have a fairly tough schedule this year-
HOME: Buffalo Bills Miami Dolphins New York Jets Arizona Cardinals Baltimore Ravens Denver Broncos Las Vegas Raiders San Francisco 49ers
AWAY: Buffalo Bills Miami Dolphins New York Jets Houston Texans Kansas City Chiefs Los Angeles Chargers Los Angeles Rams Seattle Seahawks

If they can make the playoffs, they should decent draw free agent interest in 2021.

Making the playoffs will help, but they’ll having more $$$ to “throw around” than in the recent past, and that’ll attract players.

Yep, like in the early 2000s, the defense will have to carry the team. But it’ll be a tall task with that schedule. I think anything over .500 is gravy.

MrScratch

Ok. But a significant amount of the reason that they have cap constraints in 2020 that disappear in 2021 is because 34 players are scheduled to hit some form of free agency among those being: Dont’a Hightower, Mohammed Sanu, Lawrence Guy, Joe Thuney, James White, Jason McCourty, David Andrews, John Simon, Adam Butler, Deatrich Wise and J.C. Jackson (RFA). Not to mention a backlog of players in final contract years who will pretty far along at that time including: Gilmore at 31, Cannon at 33, Chung and McCourty at 34, Edelman at 35, Slater at 36. (Assuming they all make… Read more »

Not necessarily the same people. The general public is not homogeneous. Some fear COVID, others protest not being allowed to get manicures and frosted tips. I do not think the Pats will have a losing season. Their defense is too talented for that. As someone who came of age rooting for the 1980s Chicago Bears, there is no doubt in my mind that New England fans underestimate the value of a dominant defense. NE recently won a Super Bowl by a score of 13-3 against a team that routinely put up 40+. You don’t have to have a lot of… Read more »

The Pats are the bettors’ favorite to sign Cam Newton. Why, ferchrissakes? What good would he do them? Make them an 8-win team instead of a 7-win team? He would not be the long-term QB, and he wouldn’t have a full preseason to learn how Josh works the offense, and since he can’t run the way he did when he was a rookie, he will be forced to be a real QB, at which he epically sucks.

No, sir. Give me Jarrett Stidham, and let’s see what transpires.

To get players you have to add to the cap. The Titans just added to the cap for a player going to into 9th year. The Colts just added to the cap for a player going into his 17th year. The Saints added to the cap for a player in his 20th years. The Bucs added to the cap for a player in his 21st year. All of them adding a hell a lot more than this would cost. And average has a lot of value in the NFL at QB. Eli Manning made a heck of a career out… Read more »

Well, that one win could be fairly significant it 8 wins gets into the playoffs. Or if it it’s 8 wins to 9 wins or 9 wins to 10 wins. It’s even more relevant if it’s 2 wins (which is definitely more likely, at least). And okay, who knows what happens? But let’s say he’s not the “long-term QB”… well, in that vein, from starting right here and now… Devin McCourty isn’t the “long-term” safety. Dont’a Hightower isn’t the “long-term” LB. Heck, Stephon Gilmore isn’t even the “long-term” CB. Few of really top-tier players are likely going to be here… Read more »

He was rated as a 2nd-3rd rounder.
“Chung role” after a shutdown corner is one of the most important roles on the Patriots defense because of the versatility it offers, imo

BBs history of DBs in the 2nd is what really concerns people imo.

One is a 2 down RB. One is a modern day hybrid defender in the NFL. AJ Dillon in the 2nd round is almost as bad as Sony Michel in the 1st

They’ve gone into recent seasons precariously thin at LB/S. The one time in the 2018 super bowl where I got nervous was when Chung went down. With Adrian Phillips and a blue-chip rookie, hopefully this is no longer the case.

DinoScapelli

One Senior Bowl week and NFL Combine performance does not a “blue-chip rookie” make. The kid had better be good, at age 24 coming out of a 7-game 6th-year college season against Division II players.

The Packers also look like they’re trying to pivot towards being a ground-and-pound sorta team. They took the FB/TE hybrid that triggered the Pats jumping up for Keene as Memo alluded to, then they took AJ Dillon

Not on topic but I just got a notification from Bleacher Report for a 2021 mock draft. I took a quick look through and this crazy stat stood out to me.

There’s a QB at North Dakota State called Trey Lance.
His 2019 stats:
192-287, 66.9%, 2786 yards, 28TDs, 0 INTs
162 Rushes, 1100 yards, 14TDs

Being from North Dakota State, he’d probably be a day 2 or day 3 pick. WHich means BB will take in the first if Stidham and Hoyer don’t work out. 🙂

David Andrews was the guy i anticipated on the day Pats signed him he would make the roster, when Stork was the starter. Because it didn’t make no sense that a guy who didn’t give up a single sack in the last 2 seasons for the Georgia Bulldogs was a UDFA. I kinda have the same feeling about Woodward, i’m not saying he is gonna be the starter (most likely not), but he can become a valuable backup C/OG and with time he can fight to get a starting job. But right now, i don’t think he is just a… Read more »

Dustin Woodard was PFF’s 2nd highest graded Center with an 86.0.
Woodard has been a sturdy pass protector throughout his career, giving up just 6 sacks on 1,970 pass blocking snaps in his four years in college.

Woodard is 6-foot-2, 291 pounds, and is an extremely reliable player. He was tied for the most start in the Tigers’ history with 52 and he played 928 of 992 snaps for the team last year. He’s also one of this draft class’ elite run-blockers according to Pro Football Focus.
Andrews started for New England for four seasons before missing last year and he’ll be the starter as long as his health holds up. Woodard has all the intangibles and durability he needs to succeed at the next level, he just has to put on some weight and develop further.

Per Rotoworld: Sports Business Daily reports the NFL considers Oct. 15 the drop-dead date for a 16-game season that could still be completed by February. Oct. 15 would be Week 6 under normal circumstances. John Ourand and Ben Fischer report the league would strongly want any 16-game season to be completed by the end of February. In that scenario, regular season bye weeks would be eliminated as well as the traditional off week between the conference championship games and Super Bowl. For now, the league is still planning to release a normal schedule by May 7, but it will be… Read more »

Full jersey number predictions for new Pats. Some have changed since the draft as I’ve actually looked at the roster since then, and there have been a couple roster changes. Also, I avoided duplication, as the team doesn’t in preseason, so I know some will be definitely wrong. FAs: Phillips 21, Copeland 52, Allen 94, Vitale 45, Byrd 13, Lee 19 Picks: Dugger 22, Uche 96, Jennings 53, Asiasi 86, Keene 48, Rohrwasser 6, Onwenu 66, Herron 75, Maluia 46, Woodard 67. I was doing some thinking yesterday on our draft and offense and with Develin’s retirement it clicked today. I think I know why we traded 2 4ths and a 2021 6th to move up and get Dalton Keene. Here’s my theory: Our offense is going to change some identity this year like we all expect and to make life easier for Stid, I think there will be a lot of Play Action, motion, bootlegs, RPOs etc with the run game being the center of our offense, similar to SF. And I think we are looking to implement that Kyle Juszczyk/Patrick… Read more »

Hasting is also another player to watch, shifty slot WR that already played with Stidham. Amazing 3-Cone Drill time (6.55)

WR Will Hastings, Auburn (5100, 175 lbs): A former teammate of Patriots quarterback Jarrett Stidham, Hastings return to the field in 2019 after a year-long stint on the sidelines due to a knee injury. Primarily a slot receiver, he caught 19 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown. That said, he had 26 catches for 525 and four scores before his injury — and when Stidham was still his quarterback. Overview
Highly explosive playmaker with field-stretching speed and short-area quickness to tempt teams looking for viable three-level solutions from the slot. Thomas’ impressive athleticism and talent were wasted by sub-par quarterbacking and self-sabotage. On tape, he creates chunk plays as a vertical threat, on crossing routes and with wide receiver screens and jet sweeps. He relies on athletic gifts over route acumen, but that can be corrected. His draft profile is bolstered by his potential as a return man, but he’s likely to have his name scratched from some draft boards due to character concerns, despite the talent.
