2020 Draft: Wide Receivers, Patriots Fits and Final Rankings

-by memokerobi

[ADMIN’S NOTE: Don’t forget to submit your entries to this year’s Pats-only mock draft contest!]

Well, after almost a month watching wide receivers in this draft, I am finally finished just a couple of days before the draft. Initially, I wanted to share all the reports on this site in two player parts just like the previous two posts but it was just going to be asking too much of DNOM [ED. NOTE: thanks, memo!] with over 10 posts in a span of two weeks. So instead I have compiled all my reports on a google doc (link at bottom). At some point, I let go of having long write-ups for each prospect and moved to a strengths, weaknesses bullet point format to get through more guys by the draft. So in this piece, I will give my two best fits for the Patriots in Day 1, three fits on Day 2 and a total of five fits for Day 3. Before we start, some overall thoughts on the receivers and its relation to the Pats.

I think the class is as good as advertised. It is so deep that some of the guys that will be available on Round 3 will be as good or better receiver prospects than N’Keal Harry coming out. The strength of the crop presents a great opportunity for the Patriots to rebuild their offense and find their core pieces for the offense of the future and the QB of the future. I don’t know how big of a change we’ll see on our offensive scheme but all types of receivers are available in the draft to take the offense whatever direction BB and co want. I hope we get out of this draft with at least 2 WRs even if they are mid-late round picks, not investing in a WR because we did so last year would be huge missed opportunity. I am probably the most pessimistic about our offense on this board, maybe except Hugo, and I think they desperately need more playmakers and athleticism injected. Yes we need TEs but I think it would be a mistake going for need over talent especially given the weaker TE class according to many people. With that being said, here are my fits:

DAY 1

Given the depth of WR in this class, I may prefer the Pats to use their pick on another position or trade down. If they do want to choose a WR here are my two best fits:

1) Jalen Reagor

Reagor is a guy I’m higher than most; he is my #5 receiver in the entire class. Not only that, I also think he would fit great with the Pats and bring an element to the offense that’s just not there. As it currently stands, any defense can shrink the field and sit on all underneath stuff vs the Pats and basically shut down our offense, basically what happened last year. If this sounds like the classic “deep threat” discussion we’ve been having for years, it is. I really think that we need someone who can be a consistent threat down the field which can create more space in the short and intermediate areas where we can better utilize Julian Edelman and Harry. I especially think this would be useful for Harry’s development. The best guy for this job description? Jalen Reagor.

He has blazing speed and can win downfield in many different ways. His 40 is slower than the next player on this list, but if you get them to race from the 50 yard line to the end zone, Reagor would beat him by two steps easy. Now, if this guy was purely a speedster who only knew how to run very fast on a straight line, he wouldn’t be on this list. The traits he possesses in addition to his deep separation ability is what makes me rate him highly. I really like his release and athleticism to blow by press looks which is very encouraging for him to stay on the outside in the NFL. He ran a fairly limited route tree at TCU but I am also a fan of his route running. His deep speed opens up everything for him and he runs good crisp routes with hard breaks to gain separation on all levels of the field. He is also a huge threat with the ball in his hands possessing good YAC ability. You can use him on screens, end around, jet sweeps just like Harry which would give the offense room for creativity and unpredictability. His speed and YAC ability will also make him a huge threat on over and crossing routes. He also has returned kicks and punts for TCU (2 TDs in 10 something punt returns). Worst case, he contributes on special teams before he develops as a receiver.

Of course there are negatives to his game the biggest one being his competitiveness. He needs to be better in rising up to the challenge when contested physically by corners. He didn’t have good production last year but I can understand that since his QB play was atrocious. But he let his QBs play frustrate him which led to some concentration lapses on his game. You can read more about the weaknesses in the doc.

Reagor would play the Brandin Cooks role in the Pats offense and even though not many liked him, he was productive. He is also better with the ball in his hands and I like his potential to run a complete route tree. I would be very happy with Reagor as our first pick in the draft.

2) Justin Jefferson

If Tom Brady was still our QB (sad face) then this probably would be option #1 on this list. Jefferson comes ready and he will be a plug-and-play type player with further upside. He will be a high volume receiver anywhere he goes and will be the best friend of his QB. His hands are unreal in traffic and his catch radius on high velocity throws is incredible. He will catch anything thrown his way in the middle of the field, and I’m sure he will be a very reliable option and chain mover for any offense. Perhaps, BB or you see more value in pairing a guy like this for our QB of the future and I have absolutely no problem with that. Jefferson is a great receiver with tremendous production in college. He runs great routes and in addition to the pure slot role we’ve grown accustomed to in our offense, he can also stretch offenses vertically with his speed and catching ability. There is practically no chance a linebacker or even a corner can cover him if he has a two-way go facing soft coverage.

What pushed down Jefferson for me was basically his ability to separate from tight man coverage. He will eat off-coverage alive and in over 90% of his snaps I watched, he faced off-coverage because of LSU’s historic spread offense. The space he will have to operate will undoubtedly shrink in the NFL and he’ll see more press looks. I just have some question marks if he can carry this level of productivity with that transition so he’s behind Reagor for me. Also, I think there are very good options later in the draft who can bring a lot of the things Jefferson brings even though they may not be as good.

Others considered: Denzel Mims

DAY 2

1) Michael Pittman Jr.

Pittman is one of my favorites in this draft. He is huge at 6’4″/223 and he moves surprisingly well for a guy his size. While he does not have great speed, it is enough to make him win downfield, especially when he hits full stride. Once he gets past a DB, even by a step, its game over because he bullies that DB into staying behind him with aggressive hand usage and by getting his giant frame in front of him. Great body control and hands make him a threat to come down with any deep ball, “open when covered” type of guy. It’s his ability to win on all levels is what makes me think he can be a legitimate high end #2 guy on an offense. He is very good on slants, comebacks, curls etc., the routes we saw Harry struggle last year. He is one of the rare players in this class who plays to his size and his brute strength is evident in his releases, routes, at the catch point and when he has the ball.

Because he has limitations athletically, he might not have the upside to be a true #1 guy. He didn’t run a full route tree at USC and like Jefferson his numbers were boosted by USC’s offensive scheme.

Going a bit throwback with a comparison here, but he reminds me of Dwayne Bowe both in terms of style and how I see his production ending up at the NFL level. Not a true #1 guy, but consistent 800+ yards of production with a decent number of TDs. Would love to have him in our offense.

2) Van Jefferson

If you’re looking for a guy to eventually play the Edelman role, I don’t see a better fit than Van Jefferson. He’s the best route runner in this draft not named Jerry Jeudy and I have no question about his ability to separate at the NFL. Has proven ability to win vs. press coverage (he did it consistently versus both LSU corners, one of whom will be an early draft pick this year). He can play inside and outside making him a good fit for that Z receiver role. Like Justin Jefferson, this Jefferson also has great hands in traffic. Does not hesitate to extend his arms even though contact is imminent and will grab the ball from tight spaces. Due to his route running savy, he can also get chunk yards on corner and post routes by shaking defenders with head, body fakes and footwork. He is shifty with the ball in his hands and can make guys miss.

The limitation with Van Jefferson is his upside. He will be 24 next season and probably has little growth physically left in him. He is on the lean side so NFL corners may have their way with him. He also doesn’t have the most threatening deep speed so go routes are not his forte. He did not have good production at Florida, but again I think that’s mostly on the QB.

I don’t really care about Van Jefferson’s limitations. He is the typical “better in the pros than college” prospect. I don’t think he has the upside of Edelman to actually face #1 corners and win consistently but in an offense that has a #1 option, he will be a great complimentary piece. Love his fit.

3) Tyler Johnson

I wrote about him in the first entry of this series so you can refer back to it. I don’t really get the off-field questions about him, I think a lot of it is bogus. He has tremendous production in his final three years at college and is a proven playmaker. He is a good route runner, knows how to get open, and can win 50/50 jump balls. You should be happy if he is a Patriot come Friday.

Others considered: K.J. Hamler, Chase Claypool, Brandon Aiyuk

DAY 3

1) Antonio Gibson

Even though he mostly played WR from the slot at Memphis he will most likely play RB at the NFL level but I still like him early day 3. Maybe with our new 4th rounder from Tampa. He is very raw but very talented. His quickness, speed, agility and strength/balance through contact make him a threat to take anything to the house. His 14 TDs on 77 touches proves that.

Watch the first two plays in this video (link). There aren’t many NFL WRs who can do that. Now, skip to the 3:15 mark. There aren’t many NFL RBs who can do that. Oh, he’s also pretty good at returning kicks (1:28).

For all his talent, he lacks the experience. He only has 34 carries in college and raw as a route runner. He will need time to go through a learning curve before he can consistently step on the field with the offense.

Gibson is raw but extremely talented with tremendous upside. He can be the new-generation running back in the NFL and you can be very creative with how you use him in offense. Normally, I wouldn’t want to get purely a project player with an early Day 3 pick but he can contribute immediately on special teams with his return ability so we can afford a roster spot and time to groom him for the offense. For his first couple years in the NFL, the way we used Cordaralle Patterson as a WR/RB/returner is a great comparison.

2) John Hightower

To be completely honest, I wouldn’t mind if they picked Hightower with a Day 2 pick. He is very fast and surprisingly is a good and technical route runner possessing the ability to run a full route tree and separate at all levels. He also has a good release package, showing the ability to get by press looks. Like Reagor, he will be a tough cover when asked to stretch the field both vertically and horizontally due to his speed.

One of the biggest knock on Hightower is his frame. He’s significantly lean for a guy who’s 6’1. He’ll need to bulk up to play in the NFL which might risk him losing his speed a bit. He also has suspect hands. Shows he has the ability to extend for the ball and catch it cleanly with his hands but he is inconsistent with drops in his game.

Hightower will be passed on by many due to his frame but I think he can become a Robby Anderson in the NFL. Well worth a day 3 pick.

3) Lynn Bowden Jr.

Very similar to Antonio Gibson but projects to remain at WR in the NFL. He actually played QB down the stretch for Kentucky and had insane rushing numbers showing his ability with the ball in his hands. If you want an Edelman Project 2.0 then Bowden is your guy. I don’t see him contributing immediately as a receiver but definitely gadget/return player value right off the bat.

He has some significant ball security issues though which makes me bump him down the board from a Patriots perspective.

4) Isaiah Hodgins

Isaiah Hodgins has great size to play outside and be your typical #1 receiver but his play isn’t that. I really like his route running for a guy his size, he knows how to set up defender to create pockets of space for himself. His calling card is his hands and body control. Might have the best hands in the entire class, routinely makes insane catches on the side-line and in traffic. He can win deep on double moves as he is good at selling them.

Hodgins is limited athletically. He doesn’t have the speed to threaten deep which will make NFL defenders squeeze his playing space. He also doesn’t possess the acceleration and burst to create separation off of his breaks which allows corners to recover even though they are beat.

I don’t see Hodgins separating consistently in the NFL to be more than a complimentary piece for an offense but he can be a very good one. He will need to operate in tight spaces and make contested catches which also appear to be the strongest part of his game. As a fit for the Patriots offense, I can see him doing a lot of things Malcolm Mitchell did for us like slants, curls and be a good possession receiver. Due to his size and ball skills he will also be a threat in the red zone.

5) Quartney Davis

He is nothing special but he will be useful in the pros as a slot since he knows how to operate in the middle of the field. He understands DB leverage and moves in his routes to attack that leverage and fake out defenders to create separation. He also has some ability to stretch the defense vertically as well with solid speed and convincing double moves. He knows how to play physical corners doing a good job of hand fighting.

Davis’ play is limited but I can definitely see him being a good player in the pros you can win with. Would immediately contest Jakobi Meyers for a spot in the offense and I see a player like Brian Hartline as his ceiling.

Others considered: James Proche, Isaiah Coulter, Donovan Peoples-Jones

I’ve talked myself in wanting the Patriots to draft Jordan Love. Tua’s not gonna get close to NE’s range, but Love could, maybe even into the 2nd round. Then you go into the season with Hoyer, Stidham and Love with Hoyer as the de facto starter and the other two fighting for the spot.

Nate, it’s super easy to change your profile name. On the top right of the screen, where it says Howdy, ItsBradyBaby, put your mouse over the name and click on “Edit My Profile”. Scroll down to nickname and just write in what you want. Then on the bottom left click “Update My Profile”. You might have to refresh a couple times for it to show up or sometimes I’ll log out and then log back in but that should be all you need to do.

Draft day. Can’t wait to see what happens. Will we trade up? Will we trade down? Will some team overpay to trade up? Which player will drop? Will Hugo’s reign of terror finally be over?

What’s the story behind the original song?

memokerobi

The song was written by a very famous “ashik” called Asik Veysel https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashik

It is about a poet who was sent to prison called Pir Sultan Abdal. The song is his call to the courtroom clerk telling his emotions and what he feels. Its pretty cool. Not to shade the US but when you have 1000 + years of history, cool things like this live on

I’m not familiar with these draft prospects but with all the talk of abundance of receivers i can see BB bringing in a bunch of guys to overhaul the position.
I’m hearing there will be guys drafted as low as fourth with second round grades.
Harry and Myers will have to earn their jobs.
Brady is no more I can see them tweaking the offense to fit guys in that couldn’t have made it with the offense they ran with TB.

James Lynch.
Darrel Taylor
Logan Wilson
Larrell Murchison

Defensive players I think the Patriots could realistically draft…..or least hope they do!!!

Murray and Wilson help build the LB group
Lynch and Murchison can be 3-4 end and Murchison can be moved around inside
Taylor for the edge…….. DE/OLB elephant spot

Lynch and Murchison were def the guys in the mid round discussion I like the most. Lynch as more of a high ceiling project, Murchison as the undervalued guy who ends up playing for a while.
I think I put Davon Hamilton ahead of both because its harder to see him being a zero in the pros. But I like more things about Murchison than him.

I don’t expect all pros where they are projected to be picked just some guys who might be solid and be pieces.
Kinlaw is the player I really like but no shot at getting him

Hugo, just went through the DT article. Thanks for the work! Interesting stuff, especially where you have Gallimore.

Some are projecting Raequan Williams to a 3-4 DE/occasional DT role like Lawrence Guy plays in NE. Do you think he can be a develop well in that role instead of a true NT?

hugowasmyhomeboy

hugowasmyhomeboy

Perhaps he could fill a niche as an early-down run stopping DE of that sort. He is deceptively mobile. Its just such a specific role it doesn’t warrant spending real draft capital. And I just don’t think he’s all that stout

SEAPatsFan
Member

He does have positional versatility to play anywhere on the line. He seems to have been preparing for a different era of football as a 3-4 run-stuffer but this is a pass-happy NFL.

He has good handwork, but looks so stiff, plays high. Honestly I don’t see him anywhere more than a PS candidate.

It’s Mike Lombardi which is the next best thing. But I still think he has to punch a cop tonight.

Everything really just comes down to his hip and what the medicals are and that we don’t know.

But a guy like this is always going to have games being played both ways.

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member

hugowasmyhomeboy

I’d take Tua in the 1st without blinking.
Yeah, there’s risk he breaks down. Who cares? There’s a risk whoever you’re playing sucks. Playoff teams don’t get a chance to pick the Tuas of the world unless there’s some real unique mitigating circumstances. It’s a calculated risk.

MrScratch
Member
Free agent
MrScratch

We’ll see how it all unfolds and only the teams who have access to the medicals actually know and even then Doctors opinions can differ. But I think it’s mainly conjecture and draft games and this especially under these circumstances is perfectly ripe for that. if the Dolphins blink and they very well may, I think the Chargers swipe him likely by jumping them.

Also, things are too quiet around the Redskins. Maybe they’re in the barn with Young, maybe that could be a surprise going there either picking Tua or someone moving in for Tua or Young.

I haven’t had much time to post out here, busy with volunteer work. Gronkowski returning to the NFL shows that with unprecedented success, there’s always fatigue. And that fatigue is not with NE, but with Belichick. It’s a miracle that Brady even lasted this long. Personally, I would rather take all success that the Patriots have had with this culture, than be like Philly which had a lot of fun to win 1 SB. I’m sure Brady and Gronk will have fun in Tampa Bay but that team is not going to 8 NFC championships in the next 8 years… Read more »

My best-case scenarios for tomorrow:
1) Tua falling enough to a spot where we can trade up and get him
2) Javon Kinlaw falling to 23

Realistic but good:
Trade down

Worst-case:

I like Stidham, but my biggest problem with him is I don’t *think* he has very competitive instinct. He was an amazing HS player in Texas, but when he lost his last game he was so ho-hum about it. I don’t see that drive in him to win games… which I guess is a pretty rare trait. We were spoiled by it with Brady, and there aren’t many other QBs in the league with that “killer instinct”. Maybe Mahommes? Stidham, based on his past play in college and HS, seems content with status quo mediocrity– even though he has the… Read more »

They’ll play. If they are opening up restaurants and gyms already the NFL will have their season. There might be nobody in the stands but they will rather get their TV money than nothing at all and the majority of players want to get paid their money than nothing when they are extremely low fatality candidates. Considering Tampa just blew out most of their remaining salary cap it would start with them figuring out how they’re going to create both more space for their impending costs and gap the $12.8M difference between Thuney and Howard. If you’re looking for a obvious connection team with the need and cap space to trade for Thuney, it’s the Detroit Lions. If you’re looking for a TE NEP could get back in that deal, it’s Jesse James. From there, it’s possible that a wide arrange of picks could swap anywhere, even including NE getting #3. If you’re Bob Quinn and… Read more »
