2020 Draft: Wide Receivers, Part II

-by memokerobi

6) Tee Higgins: 6’4, 216 lbs, Clemson

Higgins finished his Clemson career tied with Sammy Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins for the school record in TD catches with 27. He’s a tall WR with a lean body and more often lined up outside, taking snaps from the slot as well. Very effective running hitches and slant routes vs off coverage as he can leverage his big body in blocking cornerbacks from the ball as well as due to his danger as a deep threat makes corners hesitate on breaking on his routes. On deep routes (go and post) has an extra gear with his long strides that allows him to get open deep frequently. I think this skill will carry over to the pros. In addition, he has tremendous body control and hands that creates a significant advantage for him in contested catches and 50/50 balls and allows him to frequently catch balls outside his frame. If you just search Tee Higgins on YouTube, you’ll see highlight play after highlight play where he makes incredible catches. His size and hands are especially valuable in the Red Zone where he was the primary option for his QB Trevor Lawrence.

The biggest question mark for me is his releases vs. press coverage. He’s not very effective at taking advantage of his size; he’s not a very physical player and not very effective with his hands at the point of attack and his routes are disrupted when pressed. Although he is fast when he gets going, it can take a while for him to accelerate, decreasing his effectiveness after breaking his routes. In addition, his breaks tend to be round without great change of direction which could allow NFL cornerbacks to read the route and jump the ball. Has solid YAC ability quickly running downhill after getting the ball but nothing special due to lack of good quick area burst and change of direction.

As I said, I think his ability to make highlight catches and separate deep will carry over to the NFL but if he does not tune his route running and learn to at least win against press coverage occasionally at the NFL level, I can see him becoming a liability on the field as he can’t win purely on size and athleticism in the pros. I don’t think I’m really fit to make pro comparisons since I don’t watch players from other teams in great detail but if Higgins can develop the areas I mentioned, I can see a good comparison between him and Kenny Golladay. He can be used both from the outside and from the slot to attack defenses vertically using his catching ability and long speed.

11) KJ Hill: 6’0″, 196 lbs, Ohio State

Another record holder for a top program; Hill is the new all-time receptions leader at Ohio State. He played almost exclusively out of the slot in the 3 games I watched (Clemson, Michigan, Wisconsin). Great footwork in both his releases and his routes. Can deceive cornerbacks right off the snap with his footwork and he is very active with his hands to fight off corners and disengage. Attacks corners’ leverage who are playing off-coverage before breaking off his routes to separate. Very smooth route runner with little to no wasted motion and sharp cuts on his breaks showing his change of direction and acceleration. Diagnoses holes in zone defenses to sit and get open. He we get open quickly on underneath routes and move the chains when needed. The other three receivers I watched to date had tremendous hands so KJ’s hands didn’t look impressive even though he is a dependable hands catcher. He is also good after the catch with the ability to create some missed tackles and pick up extra yardage. Willing blocker in the run game with active hands and solid play strength; taking good angles to block defenders.

Hill is limited athletically, and there might not be much more growth to his game besides further expanding his knowledge of defenses and fine tuning his route running. He doesn’t have the size or speed to win deep vs. man coverage regularly and will struggle vs physical corners. Although he is quick, he is not explosive and dynamic limiting his ability to make big plays. I also saw that on occasions where he thought he was not going to get targeted, he slowed down his routes and did not give maximum effort.

I think what you see is what you will get when it comes to Hill. It looks like his game will translate well to the NFL and at the very worst he can be a depth option in his rookie contract for the team that drafts him with a good chance of becoming the starter at slot receiver. He will be a high volume target and a dependable friend for his QB. From a Patriots perspective, getting a player like Hill can be beneficial for the development of a young QB, whether its Stidham or someone else. I wouldn’t mind if we used one of our thirds or fourths on him although there may be guys with higher upside available at that range. That being said, I saw a ton of comparisons to Edelman which I completely disagree with. I think people underestimate Edelman’s athleticism; Hill doesn’t have his burst, quickness or dynamism. But going with a Pats comparison, I think there are many similarities with Danny Amendola which I think is a much fairer comparison for Hill given his limits as an athlete.

Memo’s WR Rankings:
1) Laviska Shenault
2) Tee Higgins
3) Tyler Johnson
4) KJ Hill

To check for glitches the NFL will be holding a virtual draft Monday.
Teams will have the ability to draft NFL all time greats and even trade them to make sure the system works and to not tip their hands at what player they want to draft this year,

https://www.si.com/nfl/2020/04/17/nfl-virtual-mock-draft-test

I really hope they post this draft and any trades made.
Imagine BB drafting Lawrence Taylor and then possibly trading him for Dick Butkus and Barry Sanders.
The possibilities are endless and entertaining to think about.

Who would you draft with the 23nd pick in an NFL All Time Greats draft?

If not for schools and offices maintenance I wouldn’t have much work, everyone is holding on to their money .
Very few clients for home work, even some of the regulars are telling me they are waiting to see how things go.
The cleaning businesses i was trying to establish also took a hit with lots of buildings close and I was just getting it started, not even registered as a business yet.
OK I need more alcohol and green leaves.

Hang in there Nate.

I’m working at home but with shot knees I can’t do yard work. I had a big company lawn care service but they screwed up last year so I cancelled them. I hired a local construction guy who is out of work right now and he does a much better job than the company. Very nice guy. When he heads back to work, I’ll find someone else.

Ok, so here’s my idea. It’s very possible sports will return and players will play to empty arenas and stadiums………………..or will they??? Hmmmm…. My idea: Teams/leagues buy laptops or monitors that can be propped up in seats to “see” the play. In reality the fans are at home watching on TVs BUT.. they can link a feed from the home to the laptops so that their cheering etc. is transmitted to the arenas/staduim laptops. The sound from the fans is then transmitted to the PA system (with some additions) and amplified. The players can “see” the fans in the seats… Read more »

@CameronWolfe
The Dolphins have 5 of the first 56 selections in the 2020 draft.
Only 6 teams in the common draft era have ever had that many picks within the first 56 picks.
Those teams combined for an eye-opening 62-22-1 (.729) record the following season.

AFC-East is going to be pretty competitive than before. It’s going to be intense.

I’d like to know the record of those teams the season before the draft and 2 seasons after. Yes the added players would help, but if these are teams that finished last or 3rd in their division, they would also have an easier schedule the following year. How many times have we seen a 5-11 team have a good draft, go 9-7 or better the next season, only to fall back to 5 or 7 wins once they get the tougher schedule?

The one issue from previous years with regards to O-line is that without Scar I am not sure if Belichick is keen on drafting projects. Hence my suspicion that if a high profile O-lineman falls to #23, they will pick him.

Andrew Thomas from Georgia can play both LT and RT. He plays from a two-point stance mostly. but surprisingly he’s great in the running game. I don’t watch Georgia much, and would love to hear more about him from Georgia fans here.

In terms of NFL readiness, Willis and Wirfs are ahead of him, and this being a skill rich class, I am hoping that Thomas falls to the Pats. Wynn was projected in the 20’s too if I remember correctly.

he’s in the bucket of top 4 OTs – the list I’m looking at right now goes Wirfs 7, Thomas 8, Becton 10, Willis 14. The numbers are overall rank, not where they went in a mock.

He needs some work. He fits a power running team like Patriots, but pass blocking seems inconsistent. But definitely a top-4 tackle.

I prefer Thomas or Willis, because of their ability to play both LT and RT.

markpatriots

I am wondering if the Patriots look for a RT later in the draft…..say 3rd maybe 4th round….. probably 3rd round.
Leaning towards Lucas Niang tackle from TCU to replace Cannon
Talented and agile but he had a hip injury that shortened his season.
Fits the physical profile of a tackle at 6’6, 314lbs with long arms 34.25. Was a 2nd team Big 12 player in 2018 and has played 3 seasons.
The medicals are the question mark and with all that has been going on teams cant check him out so he may slip down even further…. he could be a steal

SEAPatsFan

My only concern with projects is that they already have a project in Cajuste. Without Scar (Did the Pats even hire a offensive line coach?) I am not sure it’s worth taking on projects this season. A new coach will need some help and consistency.

markpatriots
Member
Free agent
markpatriots

I think most tackles are projects with a few exceptions they all need to be coached up on hand placement and footwork to some extent……some more than others obviously.
Not sure who the OL coach is either.
I just think if Lucas Niang didn’t get hurt he would be rated a lot higher than he is.
Sort of like Marcus Cannon went from a 2nd round talent to a 5th rounder. Cancer isn’t a hip injury by any stretch but medicals drop players especially the ones considered “second tier”

Regarding Burrow from below. While its way to early to say Burrow is a generational talent and he did in fact only have 1 great season there is a huge reason for that……Joe Brady. Brady is the reason Burrow flourished as Burrow took the coaching. learned it and had an epic season as a result. – Upon hiring Brady, LSU Coach Ed Orgeron last summer called it “a game-changer for us,” He was 100 percent correct. Another way to look at it.
-Imagine if the Patriots had Tom Brady and played a run heavy offense dependent on play action and the deep ball. Brady’s talent would have plateaued as a Joe Flacco type qb and his strenghts at reading defenses, touch and accuracy would be mute and he wouldnt be the greatest qb to ever play in the NFL because you handicapped his talent.

And no I am not saying Burrow will be Brady, I am saying that players need to be in systems that allow them to use their strenghts

Anyone look at OL? Saahdiq Charles is a really talented player who had disciplinary issues every year at LSU. Looks like the real deal on the field if he fills out, has OT/OG experience, should be available Day 2.

Mike Reiss

@MikeReiss
Fourth-year DT Adam Butler has signed his restricted-free agent tender with the Patriots. The tender is worth $3.26 million. Butler’s interior pass rush, among other things, aided the defense last season (6 sacks).

NHBruh

I saw that Eluemunor also signed his RFA tender. Is that and Butler’s already accounted for in PatsCap’s numbers? He had the Pats at ~1M$ when I last checked.

If these were not included, did we make some other move to accommodate these signings?

Another possibility is that these signings are all conditional on their passing physicals, and none of the physicals have been completed yet.

Why i’m so high on Jake Froom
– Really smart kid (something you can’t teach at his age)
– Accurate, specially in the middle, he is a guy that can sustain drives and move the chains.
– Low number of turnovers, doesn’t make many big mistakes
– Low number of sacks, he really knows when to get rid of football (something i reallly dislike in Stidham)
– Great attitude and he is someone coachable for high IQ coaches like BB and Josh

Who cares if he doesn’t a arm cannon, if all his other skills are what a great QB needs.

Jake Fromm had just allowed 1 more INT in his career at college than Jordan Love in the 2019 season.

Weaknesses
Lacks premium physical tools
Arm talent and velocity are below average
Must consistently win with placement and timing
Allows release point to drop, and throws lack tight spiral
Needs pinpoint placement on tight-window throws
Receivers forced up against boundary by floaters
Disappointing deep-ball accuracy since 2018
Began missing easy throws in November
Had five-game run where he failed to complete 50 percent of his passes
Will be heavily reliant upon skill-position talent
Below-average mobility

My QB draft rankings
1 – Joe Burrow (away ahead of anybody in this draft)
2 – Jake Fromm
3 – Tua Tagovailoa
4 – Justin Herbert
5 – Jalen Hurts (interesting if you want a heavy running team).

hugowasmyhomeboy

I definitely think Burrow, Tua and Fromm are NFL QBs. Herbert and Hurts I can see in a run heavy system where you ask them to throw a few times a game. Love and Eason are the guys who get drafted because they look good coming off the bus.
I think Anthony Gordon prob belongs in the group with Love and Eason of guys to dream on. He’s smaller but he can make all the throws.

Deadsmack #GottaBelieve

I think Burrow is generational QB, he has the tools to become an MVP contender for many years.
Tua is also great, but his health is really a big question mark.
Fromm is one of those underrated QB’s that you can see improve every year because he knows how to play the game and he is someone that is coachable.

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member

I like Burrow but I’m not sold on the generational QB thing at all. I don’t like how long it took him to produce, and how he’s never looked like a future NFL QB except with Justin Jefferson and JaMarr Chase.
I don’t think you can deny how accurate and poised and athletic he looked in 2019, don’t get me wrong. It’s out there to see. But generational prospects are like Peyton Manning or Andrew Luck, they show it from a young age. Not a guy with 1 good year.

Ryan Hannable

@RyanHannable
With 12 picks overall this year, Patriots could use some to get jumpstart on 2021 NFL Draft https://weei.radio.com/blogs/ryan-hannable/nfl-draft-rumors-patriots-could-trade-picks-for-2021

You would have to be a blithering idiot to trade picks into next year.

In fact, if I’m New England and I want to get in on Tua, I gladly offer a team (I’m looking at you Dave Gettleman) #23 and my 1st, 2nd, 3rd next year.

Neil X

Really glad you are not the Patriots GM. How many times has it turned out well for teams to trade that much for one player?

MrScratch
Member
Free agent
MrScratch

Actually, several. Most recently the trades for Jared Goff and Carson Wentz have had direct impacts on teams reaching/ winning Super Bowls.

Otherwise, how many times has there been a serious threat (likelihood) before an NFL draft that a college season the following year will be significantly impacted and even probably canceled. If you have a lot of value in 2021 picks right now, I’m glad your not the Patriots janitor.

Mattdog #GoodLockerRoomGuy

Hey Scratch. Why do you say that? I actually thought it was brilliant when BB used to trade a 2nd this year for a 1st next year. I would do that every year if I could….in almost any round.

jdlboot14

Just saw Rappaport claim the Pats are going to take a high draft QB. I just don’t see it. It’s actually not a great year for QB’s besides Burrow and Tua. Herbert, Love, Fromm, Eason – they’re all average NFL JAGs. And I’ll go on record and say neither are more valuable than Stid in his 2nd year and a solid DL/LB pick.

You think Byrd sticks?

cqrun

idk. Because the Pats signed him so early in FA and he isn’t a top WR, I saw the signing as a signal that they were trying to get faster at WR.

hugowasmyhomeboy

FWIW the first two receivers the Pats signed last year were Bruce Ellington and Maurice Harris. I wouldn’t read into the early in FA thing.

cqrun

Fair point, but their 40s were 4.45 and 4.61 respectively.

Kerthwap
Member

Well, yes, they do need to upgrade their speed… of course so do the other 31 teams. This is one of the many reasons that pre-season conjecture, not quite bores, but I don’t take it seriously. If there’s a guy who’s a good fit for the Patriots, he’s probably a good fit for most of the teams.

I should write an article about how the Patriots need guys who can catch, and block and tackle.

cqrun

You would have a lot of fodder. Jeff Davis at Caesar’s said yesterday “Outside of the secondary, which is one of the best in the league, the rest of their roster I think is one of the worst in the NFL.”

hugowasmyhomeboy

hugowasmyhomeboy

“Outside of” is a silly thing to discuss IMO. Any team is worse if you leave out their best players! They have those players.

cqrun
Member
Free agent
cqrun

I thought something similar. It also did not make sense to me how someone could say they have the worst roster in football outside the secondary, but then project them to win 8-9 games. Obviously BB is a mitigating factor, but he does not play the games.

MrScratch
Member
Free agent
MrScratch

This was also a #1 defense who really lost what? Van Noy and a half season of Collins? The OL at absolute worst is average and so is the RB group.

So, QB, WR, TE are positions very much in question but otherwise, worst in the NFL top to bottom? That’s a bold statement for a 12 win team that got average passing production last year any way.

rondo723

From Ian Rapoport: “I had a GM tell me, “The media is wronger about mock drafts this year than you guys have ever been.” Point being, players are going to be taken in places no one expects.”

So Tua falls out of the first round? Fromm seems to be all over the place in projections.

dp73

I think mock drafts are interesting and give a possible range of a player. I don’t think they are prefect you should be considered as fact.

cqrun

I agree, which is why I find that comment above interesting. It makes me wonder who the GMs favor that the pundits do not. And I completely agree with the range, which is why Fromm has been interesting.

Harsh critique:

“Fromm was a solid game manager at Georgia, but he lacks the size, accuracy and top arm talent to start at the next level. Overrated by many in my opinion, I believe Fromm is a last-day pick and will be nothing more than a No. 2 quarterback at the next level.“ – Tony Pauline

If he is overrated by many, how does he end up as a last day pick?

MrScratch

Because the only people who have weighed in on his value to this point are the draft pundits who don’t actually have any influence on where he is picked. Of course, this guy is just one of them saying the others are wrong.

Arm talent is the most overrated trait among all traits across all positions. Its ridiculous how NFL people fall in love with cannon arms over and over again to see them bust while guys who are accurate and make good decisions stay in the league.

For every Mahomes or Rodgers there are 10 Josh Allens or worse (Eg. Paxton Lynch)

Pauline is a really good journalist, he’s the guy who gathers the Pro Day info every year. He’s just an Inside Draft guy and Inside Draft guys sometimes have Inside Draft guy opinions.
The other thing with Fromm is that he has improvable mechanics. You could conceivably get him to throw harder. You can’t give Jordan Love or Justin Herbert a brain transplant.
