2020 Draft: Wide Receivers, Part I

-by memokerobi

I’m sure everyone has read that this is one of the best WR classes coming out in recent memory. The Patriots drafted a WR in the draft last year but I think they still need playmakers on offense and it will be for their benefit if they grab one of the top WRs in this class in the first two days of this draft. I wanted to study the class myself and share with you guys. I’m thinking 2-3 receivers per entry chosen at random which will create my WR rankings by the draft. Without further ado:

1) Tyler Johnson 6’1″, 206, Minnesota

Tyler Johnson’s a very weird case. He was snubbed a Senior Bowl invite despite posting back to back 1000 yard seasons. He was invited to the East-West Shrine game but pulled out to better prepare for the combine. This is where things get weirder, come the Combine, he decided to only participate in the on field drills and deferred all athletic testing to his pro day because he said there was too much pressure. Given that the biggest knock on him is his athleticism, primarily speed, this sequence of events will surely knock him off the board for some teams and push him backwards for others.

Now, lets get to his play. He was primarily a slot receiver for the Gophers despite his big frame but also did well on limited snaps on the outside. He’s a good route runner. He’s very patient in his routes, he waits for corners to commit and open their hips before breaking with quick footwork. Gets open quickly on out/in breaking short routes to provide quick option to his QB. This is especially effective on third downs and moving the chains. Although not a burner, he can threaten the deep part of the field from the slot as he’s very effective on seam routes, which is a route the Pats like to include in their offense, his size helps him in that regard. Uses his body to stack corners and create catching pockets for himself. He has great hands and is effective in both 50/50 ball situations and on contested catches and catches in traffic. Willing and solid run blocker as well.

On the flip side, he is not very quick and agile, nor does he have great burst. Long speed is also lacking. This is probably the biggest reason why he is not regarded a sure fire top 64 pick. He also can struggle against press as he can be ineffective with his hands to fight off corners, which will be an even bigger problem in the NFL.

Although his athleticism is lacking, I think a team will get very good value mid, maybe even late, draft. Johnson definitely has the ability to play in the league. His ceiling is not the highest given his limitations but I think he can definitely be a Tyler Boyd type player in the league. Would be quite happy if the Pats got him due to his fit in the offense.

2) Laviska Shenault 6’1″, 227, Colorado

One of the most fun but also the most frustrating players I watched. Fun because he lined up all over the field at Colorado; out wide, in the slot, in the backfield, wildcat QB and even tight end. He was the centerpiece in Colorado’s offensive scheme. However, this also made it a bit frustrating since he didn’t play the traditional role of an X receiver which made his projection much harder. Let’s get to it.

Laviska is a physical receiver and at 6’1 227, he looks like a huge running back. As I mentioned, he lines up all over the field and shows a good understanding of the offense, frequently communicating adjustments, where to line-up etc. to teammates. He has good acceleration in his release and uses quick footwork to get by defenders. Runs good routes against off coverage and can get open on all three parts of the field against it. He ran a 4.58 in the combine but I am 99.9% certain that he’s significantly faster than his testing number, given he pulled out of the combine with a core muscle injury which he later had surgery on (more on this later). Not a Tyreek Hill type burner but has enough long speed to get by defenders and create separation deep.

He has very good hands. He snatches the ball out of the air and immediately pulls it towards his body to protect it. Tracks the deep ball well, he made some spectacular catches which he had no business catching. Athleticism shows in these situations with his ability to maintain body control to make tough catches and still plant his foot inbound. I told you he was built like a running back; with the ball in his hands, he plays like one as well. Great after the catch, and rarely goes down by arm tackles. Extremely physical and does not show any hesitation in running through defenders. Has great, sudden acceleration after the catch that makes him a threat to score any time he touches the ball. He’s a willing blocker in the run game as well and does not just go through the motions in run situations.

My biggest football concern with him is his ability to beat press coverage. While he has shown that he can beat it, he’s inconsistent in that regard. I think he can use his hands and strength much more effectively to release off of press. Ran a limited route-tree in Colorado, while he has shown the ability to run good routes, will need further polishing in the pros. His run blocking technique is poor, he does not uses his hands well and can get easily shed by defenders.

The biggest concern with Shenault is his injury history. It has been two consecutive seasons with time missed due to injury and two consecutive off seasons with a surgery. It is even more significant right now since teams can’t have players in for visits and medicals. Can drop him way down in the draft unexpectedly.

Overall, I think Shenault is an extremely talented player who has all the tools to be a #1 X receiver at the next level. If he was at a bigger team with a better offense than Colorado, I think he would have been regarded as a top 20 player in this draft. Even if he does not develop well to be a #1 option, he can still be an important piece of any offense at the next level. Since the Pats got Harry in the first round last year who shares some strengths with Shenault, I don’t see the Pats calling his name even though I think he’s a better prospect. However, if he falls past the mid-second round, teams will be getting tremendous value.

Memo’s WR Rankings:
1) Laviska Shenault
2) Tyler Johnson

(Ravens GM) DeCosta said that the Ravens feels like there is enough quality WRs available that they could get a guy to come in and make an immediate impact in the fifth round.

Its truly remarkable. I have watched 15 guys by now and a projected Day 2 guy like Michael Pittman still impresses me. Really think the Pats can get a better WR prospect than Harry with one of their late thirds. Really unique class

Davis I think has the talent/fit to take him #23 overall, pending Saban’s green light on his character. Given that BB/Saban are close, I think it’ll be telling whether or not we pass on Davis. I think Blacklock is a 1st rd value, but he’s 1-gapper not a 2-gapper, so I don’t think it’d happen. If we went Blacklock it’d be eyebrow-raising. Like drafting Dominique Easley at 29 a few years ago. I would not have Gallmore on my draft board. Yep, get picks and let ’em do what they want. Bucs are going to seriously underperform this year. 43 yo QB with a history of slow warming to offensive weapons, little to no TC to develop that, and then very likely a shortened season where health and most cohesive team play will trump other factors. They are the 2020 version of the Browns–next offseason the talking heads will be looking for scapegoats for why they “underperformed”.

Hugo, we’re talking about an individual who has very carefully built his image on being a larger than life character to attract attention. His post NFL career has largely been a bust to this point. Yes some are thinking he’ll come back to football because he didn’t really retire (which I agree is dumb)…but there’s another read that he’ll come back because he’s still young enough to play and hasn’t successfully transitioned to something new despite obvious marketing skills. Coming back to football would give him a chance to reboot his image from “Gronk, goddawful TV commentator.”

dp73

One year retired and his post football career has been a bust to this point.
I just think that is a rush to judgement.

Pauly

By this point, Tiki Barber and Michael Strahan had already transitioned successfully in entertainment. Ditto Jim Brown. Same with Romo and Witten and countless who went that route. Of course Gronk may have needed significant time to heal his body so that could be slowing him. I don’t wish the guy ill…but the stuff he talked about doing never materialized. Wrestling…is not going to be any better on his body than football.

“Lombardi goes on to declare that he likes Stidham’s ability and potential, but that the Patriots are far from “all-in” on the second-year former fourth-round pick out of Auburn.”

https://weei.radio.com/blogs/andy-hart/michael-lombardi-patriots-not-all-in-on-jarrett-stidham

I’m not convinced Lombardi is as plugged in as he leads people to believe. He was also the sole source for the “Pats are sick of Jamie Collins’ freelancing” narrative and yet two years later Collins was back on a cheap deal. That said, I can totally see this being the case with the Pats and Stidham. They brought back the guy he beat out year to compete with him again. BB by himself could get the freaking Redskins to the playoffs. Pats will win the division again with Stidham as long as they don’t suffer key injuries. Health of topline contributors and familiarity in a known system will trump oher attributes in a shortened season like the NFL will have,

Report: Tua Tagovailoa ‘flunked’ physical, ‘brittle’
according to what former NFL GM Michael Lombardi has heard, Tagovailoa has failed physicals for at least two teams in the top 10 picks of the April 23 Draft.

“What they saw, is they saw that it’s more than one…it’s not just his hip,” Lombardi said this week on his GM Shuffle podcast. “It’s his ankle, it’s his wrist. He broke his wrist the first day of spring ball one year. Then they fixed it, he came back and he broke it again. I mean he’s brittle. He is brittle. You can’t deny it.”

A decade of job growth vanished in less than a month! Reads CBS news… Covid19 vs the Spanish Flu is like comparing a sliver to a 2×4 when it comes to total deaths so far and the Spanish Flu’s most destructive hit came in its second wave in the fall killing millions more. If there is another resurgence in the fall with this, the government is gonna have to start printing money for handouts as joblessness continue to rise to unimaginable numbers.

The best “experts” have already said it could take 12-18 months. Good luck on people being able to last that long. But if the government wants to pay everybody’s mortgages, rents, car loans and expenses for those who can’t work now… Sh!t I can’t even finish that sentence without laughing out loud! Hugo, let us know your opinion about Yates 3 Edge players.

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member

hugowasmyhomeboy

I think Lewis has the best skillset of the three, but this is a bad year to be spending a 23rd overall pick on a guy with medical concerns.
Yetur Gross-Matos is a quality prospect, but I don’t think he’s a good scheme fit for NE. I like him as a strongside 4-3 DE, which makes him a tweener in our system. Not stout enough to play DE in the role that Butler and Guy fill, not agile enough to stand up. We traded away Michael Bennett for a reason.

I got to see a couple of Penn State games. Of the 3 I like Moss.

Epenesa is a developmental prospect at 5-tech DE. I don’t dislike him but I think it’d make more sense to go with a bigger guy like Raekwon Davis, or perhaps Marlon Davidson, or maybe Agim from Arkansas.

I like Terrell Lewis as well. He has power and can set the edge but also has pass-rushing OLB athleticism. And he’s played in Saban’s Alabama defense so we’ve gotten to see him in roles that resemble NE.
If the Pats didn’t have had such bad luck with injury history guys lately, I’d be more excited about him.

South Carolina WR Bryan Edwards, who fractured his fifth metatarsal before the Combine, has his boot off now and is moving around well, I’m told. Teams were just sent updated images and scans of the Day 2 WR, who is the Gamecocks all-time leader in receptions.

Jonathan Taylor from Wisco has breakaway speed, and more ability to create on his own, even if he’s not as natural in the passing game. AJ Dillon from BC is more of a downhill runner but he gives you a punishing downhill element if you want to run the ball a lot. And that’s just from the highly ranked guys.

I’m all for Brady needing to prioritize his family, but from the sound of things he probably should’ve retired if what he said in the Stern interview is true. If Giselle is pressuring him to that degree it’s not going to get better just because he went to Tampa Bay.

JLStokes

Compromise is great, but just from what he says I don’t see how you can compromise in this way because it affects your play. If Tom is still trying to play at a high level, but wants to divide the focus that got him to where he is now, how do you maintain that intensity?

Not saying it’s impossible, but just my first thought.

dp73
Member
Free agent
dp73

He still got to play .If you believe the reports she wanted him to retire. The compromise could have been him not going to mini camp.

I don’t think that it affected his play in 2018. Poor OL,weapons and age had more to do with last season than less intensity.

cqrun
Member
Free agent
cqrun

If he knew going into the 2019 season he wasn’t going to be back for 2020, I wondered how that would have affected his intensity/focus during the year. Not something I think is really quantifiable, but it made me wonder.

dp73

Most players want to have their best years of their careers going into free agency. I don’t see why Brady would want to be any different.

cqrun

It is an interesting debate for sure. Like I said, not something I think that could be quantified. Also seems unlikely TB would ever be unfocused for a game too. Just something that caught my attention from the interview.

JLStokes
Member
Free agent
JLStokes

I think it affected his play, maybe not to the level that guys like Max Kellerman thinks, but clearly the lack of extra time with his young receivers had an effect.

Now he’s going to another situation with more young receivers with even less experience in the style that Brady likes. I just don’t see how this ends well on multiple fronts.

dp73
Member
Free agent
dp73

I don’t agree that mini camp was a big issue. That should have been negated. They still had training camp.I think Harry being hurt and missing all that time was a bigger issue.

I think Brady plays well in 2020.

cqrun

The musical chairs at WR did not help matters.

cqrun

I thought the same thing when I saw those comments. Not sure how being in TB and the family in the Northeast really resolves those concerns, but they must have discussed it before he signed.

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member

hugowasmyhomeboy

It has nothing to do with where he plays. I think Pats fans just have a hard time looking at this situation without the boundary condition that Brady “should” be a Patriot.
Brady had good reasons to move on, and he did. The Pats, for that matter, had good reasons to move on, and they did.
I’m happy for Tom. If there even is a 2020 season, I think he’s going to have an epic one. And the Pats can pivot towards figuring out how to stay competitive and at the top of the AFCE longer-term.

cqrun
Member
Free agent
cqrun

I am speaking more about how his career impacts his family life. If he skipped OTAs for more family time when he was with the Patriots, how does signing with a new team in a new location help with that situation? Are they all going to move? Seems silly for what would be 2-3 years and likely have negative effects on his wife’s aspirations.

Yeah, upon further thought, the values should be adjusted to reflect how much better those two are than the rest. Change the ladder to $5, $3, $2, $1 maybe and you start with $10 (but still need to pick 3 so you can’t double on Moss and Gronk),

I’d take Gronk for $5, then ask him to restructure so that I only pay $4. With the remaining $6 I take Amendola for $2, then restructure him down to $1, because Danny will restructure anything. That gives me $5, which I use to get Moss. Oh….and I sign Stanley Morgan as a free agent.
