2020 Free Agents: Wide Receivers and Tight Ends

-by MAC

Now lets move on to a couple of offensive positions where the Patriots have less certainty, specifically wide receiver and tight end. The struggles fielding a group of consistent players at these positions was very apparent in 2019. In fact, the role of the tight end in the offense was nearly non-existent. And the fiasco of wide receiver turnover didn’t help either. So, could the Pats target any of the players below? Are any worth considering? As always the list is as of the day the article was submitted, so changes may occur. Have fun.

So, since there will be no people at the draft, maybe it will go faster? I know the time on the clock will be the same, but maybe the lack of drama on stage will help teams pick faster. Or, it’s just more time for Mel Kiper and Merryl Hodge and the like to yap more!?! ugh. This whole thing has made the draft so much less exciting.

Later round WR I want Lynn Bowden Jr. Kentucky. Played wr in 2018 and was an a 2nd team all sec player as a sophomore. Started as a wr in 2019 but because of multiple injuries at the qb position he moved to qb. Offers excellent special teams value taking kicks and punts. Projects as a slot wr. Tough, selfless, ultra competitive maybe too much and maybe a little cuckoo see video below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvS47vfVxJs Note- After all this he was the MVP of the game. Had 233 yards rushing and two touchdowns in the 37-30 win over Virginia Tech. He… Read more »

2018 offers a better view of him as a wr where he was a 2nd team all SEC player as a sophomore. Had a bright future but because of the move to qb he is a year behind and fell off the radar.

Just to repeat the obvious: I think the format was perfect. I hate playoff and regular season expansions. Combine that with less pad practices and we are poised for a lot of bad football. If September was a preseason extension, now preseason will extend through week 10.
I guess this trend is a way to please the average, not educated – FF player, fan, who likes a lot 54-50 points games full of busted coverages, missed tackles and turnovers.

Under the darkness of night. While everyone is sleeping our hunter sets about his plan. Roaming through the city streets he sets about to get his prey. He pulls up silently and looks around…… its eerily quiet He knows where to find his prey but has failed on numerous occasions to catch it. Failure is not an option so he takes upon himself to use the cover of night He sees his prey all alone and not suspecting what is about to happen. He walks over and grabs it, holding it tight The hunter smiles SUCCESS Sounds better than I… Read more »

I accidently found a place attached to a hotel near an IHOP where I was heading and tried it out. It was fantastic and $15 which in Hawaiian tourist areas is cheap versus the normal high prices of Hawaii. Airline people stay there so they cater to them. I even tried the Chinese breakfast stuff which was fine but eating fish for breakfast is not normal to me…even though it was pretty good.

Let’s put it the other way, we wouldn’t stop the economy. What would you tell to those doctors, nurses, cops, etc trying to save everybody’s lives? They are risking their lives too. Just in Italy, more than 60 doctors lost their lives to help all of us. That would be like sending soldiers to a battlefield knowing they would most likely die. Covid-19 doesn’t kill only elderly people. At my age it can kill 4 of 1000 and that can be me (there are healthy people dying too). Well then you do what George Washington did. You see the Continental Army had a big problem with untrained, undisciplined soldiers who would fire their volley then break ranks, drop their muskets and run when the British would return fire. So good ole George had to figure a quick solution to that problem so he went ahead and put his best marksmen at back of his lines with one simple order, “Shoot any man who retreats or attempts to flee.” Someone was going to shoot at you regardless of which way you went. One way you had a better chance… Read more »

Let me tell you what is happening so far in my country: THAT REALLY WORKS

Of course, the economic recession will be big, but at least we can come out of this situation as a TEAM and not as individuals and that can be the best way to recover the economics.

Opinion Slayer

Currently, 1/3 unemployment rate (highest ever and 3 times greater than the last recession) in the US, almost 50M have already lost jobs (highest ever this quickly) and 3.3M filed for unemployment last week (highest ever) and this virus hasn’t peaked yet! However bad you think this recession/depression is going to be, will end up being far worse than anyone imagined. If you think this virus is unprecedented, it won’t be close to what the economic fall out will be.

Hey OS, just wondering why you are focusing on the unemployment. Do you think we should be handling this a different way?

dyims

People without a paycheck and have trouble trying to apply for unemployment would differ with you. Like how are they supposed to pay bills, rent, utilities, buy food????? Looks as though I’m out of work without a paycheck for the duration thanks to our mayor putting an edict that over 60s have to stay at home. And about that unemployment check, it won’t be near what I make now probably about a third of what I get.

Opinion Slayer

I’m focusing on it because what we are seeing right now is unprecedented when it comes to unemployment, blowing away all American recessions/depression to date at a destructive rate, that will have an unparalleled trickle effect on the quality of life of Americans. Picture you are a cruise ship chef who just got laid off. You had that job for 10 years but you make an average American income (70k) and have an average American savings account (average American is around 3K) and you are married, own a home, and have 3 kids. Now you can’t ply your trade elsewhere… Read more »

I don’t disagree with anything you said and thanks for that perpective. I’m just wondering if you think we should be handling this pandemic in a different way. I don’t envy the powers that be and the decisions they have to make about what is the best path to follow. I tend to think that stopping the virus at all costs is the best path right now but who knows.

Opinion Slayer

I honestly don’t know the best way to handle it and it’s why I’m so glad that there are different countries using different methods so we can see, because if anybody on this site doesn’t think there will be other strains that will come after this, they are naive. So unless the world governments admit that most currency is nothing but paper backed by nothing and start printing money for everyone it’s gonna keep getting uglier if people can’t work to live.

Deadsmack #GottaBelieve

Any of those decisions would have a big price to pay, that’s not even a question and i have all the sympathy and respect for the people struggling because they lost their job.
But we are talking about saving millions of lives (even that scale in USA) by slowing down the progression of the rate of infection. That can give time to add more beds, ventilators, to organize for the 2nd wave. Maybe that way we are also giving a chance for some medicine like Hydroxychloroquine (or other) can be tested and produced in high scale.

But if you want the name of a player, I agree with Edelman. Gilmore is too quiet and unassertive, despite him being the DPOY. I don’t think even a lot of Pats fans here in Boston would recognize Gilmore’s face.

I know Anthony Fauci. I have had lunch with him. He was an early HIV researcher back in the 1980s when it was a hugely important focus of medical research. He is intelligent and not a total arrogant a-hole like some of the other famous HIV researchers from that era.

I think the NFL (owners + commish) are seeing things through rose colored lenses right now. In fact, they are probably the only ones seeing it this way. Maybe it’s just a facade? Maybe they are actually preparing for a cancelled season behind-the-scenes, but are publicizing the season as if it’s all good to go?

Nothing to settle for. The national revenue streams are 3/4ths of their total revenue. They can also try to get more creative with scheduling and add more TV games even if they just use the NFL network to try to drive revenues there. Especially if CFB/ NCAA cancels (which is more likely) their season and they get Saturdays to themselves. The question will be how they deal with salaries/ cap going forward. Do players want 3/4tghs money this year and projected adjustment to 2021 or do they want a 2021 cap reduction, more contract cuts and many of the better… Read more »

I don’t think so at all. Unless this gets completely out of control, there’d be no reason to believe they’ll cancel the season. And, if it does, then we’re all in a whole much bigger world of trouble than the NFL would matter

The other sports (who are in-season right and have lost/ are losing games) are targeting late May/ mid June. And they don’t have the structural make-up that softens in stadium revenue loss that the NFL does.

The big IF is what happens when/IF COVID-19 reappears like the normal flu in early October with a few cases and which normally peaks from December to February
Draft is all set and can be done.
OTA’s may be an issue.

Unless the US somehow totally effs up the mitigation efforts, I see no reason why we won’t be able to have football by September. The peak month is on us now. April is going to be hell. I rarely have strong opinions about college QBs. But man, the draft buzz around Jake Fromm is a joke!
He’s succeeded in a pro style system at a very young age. He throws back shoulder and fades with touch, he leads his receivers into YAC. 63% completions is pretty good for the SEC, and for being on a team whose offense actually resembles the NFL rather than throwing bubble screens all day. He’s gotten Justin Fields and Jacob Eason to transfer instead of competing with him so you know he’s got great intangibles.

NFL teams never learn! They’ll trade some Mitch Trubisky, who has nicer hands and can run fast and throw the ball hard.
And then we’ll be having the same “how did that guy fall?” conversation that we do every year, and wondering why the good teams are good and the bad teams are bad.

I agree.
His quiet competitive nature seems to be getting completely ignored. I see him as a person who has inner drive. That trait carries over to all aspects ie film study, leadership, fixing flaws and just looking to continually improve by putting in the work.
I see his quiet competitive nature as huge deal and a fundamental trait

hugowasmyhomeboy

The age thing is also unusual. He was quarterbacking (not merely playing quarterback for) a good college team at 19. That’s rare. How many true freshmen have done that in the SEC… ever?
Manziel and Jalen Hurts were redshirt frosh. And weren’t pro style. I’d have to do some digging but Fromm might have been the best true freshman QB in the SEC since Peyton Manning!

markpatriots
Member

The Vols did win a Championship the next year after Manning left but the SEC was all about Spurrier and Florida for the most part.
The Big 12 or whatever they were called back then was very good with Nebraska, Oklahoma and then their was Florida State from the ACC and on occasion Georgia Tech.
Notre Dame, Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State and Miami were also among the better programs with a surprise team thrown in the mix every now and then ie Alabama, Colorado and Washington in the early 90’s

Maybe but Harmon was usually the 3rd safety because Chung was usually in as a star to cover the slot or stop the run and DMC was used to cover or to help double a player or roam a side while Harmon played center fielder. I know the Patriots drafted Harmon in the 2nd but truth be told he is the 3rd safety.
