Postseason Y Factors 2019: Patriots vs. Titans

-by DNOMN8R314

“No Days Off” is being put to the test as the Patriots have to play on the week following Week 17 for the first time since 2009. Both sides of the ball are banged up and the Titans are on a hot streak, but the Patriots aren’t going to lie down and accept defeat. Here’s a few Patriots who might play a key role this week.

The Bolden the brave: Brandon Bolden provided a spark against Miami with a nearly 40-yard kick return, but his role might be important on offense if the Patriots are able to rely on their run game. Sony Michel and Rex Burkhead have both played well towards the end of the season, but with an increased rushing attack, Bolden may get some offensive snaps as he is a capable substitute both in the running and passing games.

He shall be Dion: The Titans’ run game is expected to play a large part in Saturday’s game, as Derrick Henry has become one of the most dominant backs in the league, but Tennessee also rosters ex-Patriot Dion Lewis, a versatile back whose specialty is elusiveness. While New England’s defense is going to have a lot to handle in Henry, they’ll have to prepare for Lewis’ change of pace too.

Only a Smith deals in absolutes: The Titans drafted Jonnu Smith in 2017’s third round and the tight end has ascended statistically every year since. Simth ended 2018 with a solid 35/439/3 slash line, fourth on the team in receptions and third in both receiving yards and touchdowns. While A.J. Brown (52/1,051/8 – a ridiculous 20.2 yards per reception) and Corey Davis (43/601/2) will receive most of the attention from New England’s cornerbacks, and Tajae Sharpe (four receiving scores, three in the red zone) will draw attention as well, Smith has been described by Bill Belichick as a complete tight end. After the Patriots struggled against Mike Gesicki last week, they’ll be sure to focus on Smith, a player the Patriots also cannot let beat them.

Simon says be Wise: Edge rusher John Simon and defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. have been two of the more under-the-radar performers in New England’s front seven, whether by traditional stats or advanced. Wise, who was a not-uncommon prediction to be cut or traded in August, ended the year with 26 tackles, 10 QB hits, two sacks, and the first forced fumble of his career, while Simon netted 43 tackles, seven QB hits, four sacks, a forced fumble, and an interception. Pro Football Focus also graded both their seasons well, Wise finishing the regular season with a 68.8 grade and Simon ending with a 73.6. Both players will have to keep their game at a high level against an ascendant offense like Tennessee’s.

Not down with OPI (that can’t be fly): The Patriots have seen a number of drives be slowed, hampered, or squelched in the last couple games by offensive pass interference penalties, including those that have taken touchdowns or third down conversions off the board. Belichick and his coaching staff preach against repeating errors, and there is no time for any more mistakes. This must stop now.

BoSoxJim TUMS-O-METER Prediction:
And so here we are. For the first time since the 2009 season, the Pats will be playing in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. Had they held on versus the Dolphins last week, they wouldn’t be, but it is what it is. Needless to say, advancing in the playoffs to get to the Super Bowl will be one more game harder. Historically under Coach Bill, when the Pats made it to the Super Bowl they had the bye week to rest. In fact, the only time the Pats made it to the Super Bowl when having to play in the wild card round was back in 1985. They have their work cut out for them.
To make it more challenging the Pats face the Titans, who defeated them last season. The Titans have a formidable run game, a rejuvenated Ryan Tannehill at QB, and a more than capable receiving corps. Thus the Patriots defense and special teams will be counted on to meet these challenges. And with Mike Vrabel at the helm, you know the Titan defense will be well-prepared. So the big questions will focus on how will the Patriot offense perform. Can the running game continue to improve and help the passing game? Will Brady be the Brady of not so long ago or will the Brady of last week show up again? Can the WR group play well enough for the Titans respect the passing game? Are the distractions of TB’s (and others) future filtering into the locker room? And probably the biggest question is: Will the Patriot team be fired up or will the sense of urgency not be there? We, and the rest of the anxious Patriot Nation, will find out Saturday night. Prediction: 8 cases.

Skalski is a hell of a player. Tough call on him but LSU has been the better team thus far.

I get why they’d make a targeting rule. But you have to establish some intent. It’s ridiculous. He’s going at the middle of a standing target, and the target ducked. It’s a split second thing and two people move. He can’t watch a powerpoint presentation before deciding where to go. They’re punishing the linebacker for existing.

Looks like Clemson plays better at the beginning of halves. Let’s see if LSU can respond. Need to stop the penalties. Could have a bigger lead.
