Y Factors 2019: Patriots vs. Dolphins

-by DNOMN8R314

Week Seventeen. The Season Finale. Division Rivalry. Bye Week On The Line. Far Too Many Words Capitalized.

It’s that week once again.

With Bill Belichick already declaring this game as equivalent to a postseason contest, don’t expect the Patriots to hold back their starters unless they take a dominant lead late. Similarly, none of us should assume the Dolphins will come into Gillette Stadium belly-up, as Ryan Fitzpatrick has led the once oh-and-seven-and-tanking Miami squad to a 4-4 mark over their last eight games. New England rarely stomps Miami from start to finish, so the Patriots will once again need a strong performance from the entire 53-man roster (okay, 46-man game day roster, but that includes practice preparation… so let’s lump the practice squad into this as well) to come out on top. Here are a few to watch.

Sunk in the Meyers: The emergence of N’Keal Harry and acquisition of Mohamed Sanu dropped Jakobi Meyers to fourth on the wide receiver depth chart, but Sanu’s injuries and struggles, along with Julian Edelman’s injuries, have given Meyers more chances than he may have gotten were everyone healthy. While Meyers has been targeted in some key moments this season, he has not yet found the end zone (an unfortunate drop against Kansas City marking his low point), and Meyers currently holds the mark among wide receivers (and is tied for third among all players) with 25 receptions from Tom Brady without catching a touchdown (thanks to Redditor NickyScribbles for the info). If he keeps receiving signnificant snaps, he’s got a shot at showing his value to the New England offense in a statistically-notable way.

Gesicki notes: Second-year tight end Mike Gesicki has emerged as a playmaker for the Dolphins, behind only breakout wide receiver DeVante Parker on the team in targets, receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. (That’s not just receiving touchdowns, but all touchdowns.) The six-foot-six, 245-pound Gesicki is of a similar mold as last week’s opposing TE-1 Dawson Knox, and Josh Allen targeted Knox several times in or near the end zone. The Patriots will need to do a better job covering Gesicki than they did Knox if they wish to keep Fitzpatrick from airing balls over New England defenders to a spot he intends only Gesicki’s arms to reach. Their game against Knox could be considered preparation for covering Gesicki; however, Gesicki is a much more athletic pass catcher than Knox. While Knox may have been practice, it will take more than just typical tight end preparation to limit Gesicki’s impact on the game.

Protection racket: An NFL truism is that a team must have an offensive line capable of protecting the quarterback if it wants to achieve any sort of passing offense. Despite the Patriots’ struggles along that line this year, they have shown improvement, keeping Tom Brady upright throughout last week’s win over Buffalo. Their game against Miami will be another opportunity to show not just their resilience but their true strength as a unit. Of Miami’s defensive line and edge defenders, the highest rated by Pro Football Focus is Zach Sieler, who has played in two games. John Jenkins is the only other player in that group with a rating above 70, and only three more (Taco Charlton, Charles Harris, and Christian Wilkins) have ratings above 60. While a low PFF rating does not eliminate a player from having an impact, it does give an edge on paper to New England’s offensive line. But of course, the games are not played on paper, and every coach in the league knows that.

Ex-Patriots living abroad: Brian Flores has pilfered New England’s releases and practice squad throughout 2019 to fill out the Dolphins’ roster, and several players are already taking significant roles. In his first game as a Dolphin, linebacker Calvin Munson played 40 percent of Miami’s defensive snaps; in two games, cornerback Nate Brooks has nearly matched that percentage. Cornerback Ken Webster played 228 defensive snaps in eight games before being placed on injured reserve. Edge defender Trent Harris and cornerback Jomal Wiltz have remained on the Dolphins’ roster since Week 1, Harris playing in nearly 19 percent of defensive snaps and Wiltz in – astoundingly – nearly 57 percent. Both Harris nor Wiltz have a PFF grade in the forties. (Munson’s is 77.8, and Brooks’ 61.5, but again, small sample size.) Who knows if any of these former Patriots will think of Sunday’s match as a revenge game, but it’s not improbable that Beilichick and Josh McDaniels will go after these players as much as they are able.

Tricks are for kids: One weakness on the sturdy Patriots’ defense has been a vulnerability to trick plays, especially in the red zone. Three of the Patriots’ last four games have featured their opponent scoring on a trick play inside the 10-yard line; though the Bills did get assistance from the referee declaring the wrong player eligible, this needs to be tightened up if New England wants to keep opponents out of the end zone. The Dolphins have already scored a touchdown on one spectacular trick play this year, a one-yard pass from punter/holder Matt Haack to kicker Jason Sanders, so they, like New England’s offense, are showing a penchant for legerdemain with the pigskin. Belichick, Jerod Mayo, Steve Belichick, and whichever coaches are watching how Miami’s offense lines up will need to keep their eyes open for any shenanigans, as the Patriots will not want to let the Dolphins into the end zone that way… or, frankly, let them in at all.

BoSoxJim TUMS-O-METER Prediction:
And so we get to game 16. It’s been a long and exhausting season that doesn’t feel like the Pats are 12-3. Yet they are, thanks mostly to a stronger and more opportune defense, though a weak schedule in the first half of the season didn’t hurt. Last week’s win against the Bills had a lot of positives. First, the AFC East title was clinched, ensuring at least one home playoff game. Second, the offense seemed to wake up a bit. And third, the defense was on target. Also, the range of playoff seeding was reduced. Going into the BUF game, depending on what they and other teams did in weeks 16 and 17, the Pats could have been sitting anywhere from the #1 to the #5 seed going into the playoffs. Now, going into the MIA game, if they win they are the #2 seed. If they lose and KC wins, they are the #3 seed with no bye week, thus leading to Bill’s declaration that the game against MIA is a de facto playoff game to get the bye week. Late season games against MIA have always been chaotic (see last season’s fiasco as an example). However, most of the time, the second MIA game is in Miami. This year it is at Gillette, so warm weather will not be a factor. The mid-40’s forecast might even affect the Dolphins. Though 4-11, MIA does have a QB that could cause fits for the Pats in Fitzpatrick, who has had a good December and has mobility. The Pats still have a few banged-up key players. Records usually don’t matter in this game, so expect a close one. With the #2 seed and the bye week on the line, this is another 4-5 case game.

Not to stir the pot anymore, but I find it amusing that certain people here feel that the loss against Miami was the worst under Bradychick. I don’t know if they were around for the 2002 season after the first SB win, it was a horrendous season on many accounts. At 8-7, they needed to beat the Phins in the final game and the Jets to lose to go to the playoffs. The struggled to beat the Phins (won in OT) and the joy turned to dismay when the Packers mailed it in and the Jets blew the cheeseheads out.… Read more »

The Athletic reports ex-Browns coach Freddie Kitchens and OC Todd Monken were “never on the same page.” This has long been obvious, but reporter Zac Jackson offered up some fascinating, funny details on Tuesday. Per Jackson, Monken would “spend time on the field before games telling opposing coaches how bad things were with the Browns,” going as far as to call the team a “total mess.” Monken apparently complained that Kitchens’ Sunday play-calling rarely resembled what was installed in the game plan. An NFL/college journeyman, Monken became a folk hero for his aerial-obsessed Bucs in 2018, though Jameis Winston pushed… Read more »

Someone wrote below that the new OC has a relationship with Fitzpatrick (who has another year left on his contract). If Tua is still the apple of Flores’ eye, it makes sense to keep Fitz another year while Tua recuperates and learns the playbook.

Titans coach Mike Vrabel, on a conference call, is asked how similar the Patriots’ offense/defense look to him from his time with the franchise (2001-2008). “Since I left?” Vrabel asked. “I don’t know. Is Matt Light the left tackle? Is Dan Koppen the center?”

Phil perry:

Shuffling of the deck in Cleveland could eventually lead to second consecutive offseason in New England where there is serious coaching-staff turnover.

Significant front-office and roster changes could be in the offing as well. A lot for Bill Belichick to juggle.

I actually preferred the old days when they lost and fans weren’t looking for stuff to bitch about every 5 minutes on blogs and twitter. That’s what worried me about this year’s version. I have little confidence in them being able to win a game vs a more talented opponent unless things go highly in their favor. They need short fields, turnovers, trick plays, lucky breaks, etc to compete. I don’t think they can line up vs better teams and go on 75 yard drives enough times to outscore the other team. And the defense, while still good is not as good as we thought and is starting to show. So while I want them to succeed, I have my reservations. it’s hard to fix… Read more »

Phil perry:

Since seeing BAL in Week 9, against 13 personnel passes, the Patriots have allowed 7.4 YPA, 3 TDs and a 137.1 rating. Titans have had three TEs play at least 11 snaps in every game in 2019.

There probably wasn’t a tougher Wild Card matchup the Patriots could’ve pulled.

Everyone keep saying they were very good against the Bills and that may have been their best game of the year. And I may even agree. But the Bills were 10 yards away from tying that game. In a game where NE played well. So if that’s the best they have had then how are they supposed to beat even better teams on the road?

“But the Bills were 10 yards away from tying that game.”

And the Patriots stopped them. Sometimes you have to give the Bills credit too. They fought hard and they are a good team. It the end the Patriots made the plays they had to and won.

The Bills stopped themselves with a bad throw by Josh Allen. The tying TD was right there. That’s my point: Even when the Pats play well this year, they are still in dogfights or lose. Especially if the defense or ST doesn’t get turnovers and give the offense short fields. Has nothing to do with credit to the other team dp. Save that for Bill’s next press conference

I think they’ve been keeping James White off of film for most of the second half of the season. The biggest new wrinkle we saw was Burkhead and White in a 2-back set with White sometimes lead blocking (!!) for Burkhead during the Bills game. That vanished vs. Miami in favor of safe and conservative offense, and White was barely targeted to boot.

There’s a twitter account out there that really awkwardly supports Gase, using coach speak terms. The Bears thing is just peak NFL institutional irrationality.
You’ve got a team with a supposed offensive guru in charge, out there using a million formations a game, RPOs, tight end arounds, whatever it is. I mean watch the Bears play, it looks like the most scheme-heavy offense in the NFL.
And they’re 29th in points and 29th in yards. And you want to fix that…. by finding a guy who uses a million and 1 formations a game? Why not just get a QB who can complete a forward pass?

Patriots have played Henry twice and the results were different both times. During the divisional playoffs after the 2017 season, New England held him to only 28 yards on 12 carries as well as three receptions for 21. The following season, however, Henry was able to gain 5.3 yards per attempt against the Patriots and find the end zone twice on 11 carries that went for a combined 58 yards.

Per @SharpFootball, the Titans are tied for 1st in red-zone success rate when passing and 2nd when running.

But Belichick points out they aren’t in the RZ often because they score from deep. Titans have run 59 run plays (NFL average is 68) and 56 pass plays (78) inside the 20.

Edelman has 100 catches and is doubled on every play basically
Burkhead missed 3 games and had the most receiving yds he has had in his 3 years with the pats

Sanu cant catch a damn thing
We have no idea what we have in Harry(7 games)

I have no idea how people aren’t more disappointed in Michel. He’s been sooooo marginal. Can’t break a tackle, hasn’t played on passing downs. Hasn’t been good at running outside. There was a play in the first Bills game he caught a bubble pass, and got absolutely ragdolled. How does a power back with a head of steam get driven backwards? It’s infuriating.
I don’t care if White doesn’t break tackles, he’s a passing down back and he produces when his number is called one way or another. But Sony is such a disappointment.

I was reading through the comments and I came across the comment Hunter made that the Pats dragged on Koo and he’s been money with the Falcons. He’s been money because he’s kicking inside a cushy dome. You seriously underestimate the effort to kick a ball in outside elements with power and accuracy. Koo has had success in the past kicking inside a dome so it’s no surprise he’s been effective with the Falcons.

HunterCenter

HunterCenter

you may be right, he may not function well outdoors. And none of us saw his tryouts/practices to really gauge. I just think they may have wasted a few weeks waiting for Folk. But again, water under the bridge now. Also, I tend to think the indoor/outdoor thing for kickers is a bit overstated. Plenty of kickers have excelled in both conditions.

dfwpatsfan

dfwpatsfan

I disagree it is overstated. Belichick himself had talked in length that it is incredibly difficult to keep the elements in mind while kicking.

I played soccer for 22 years and while I started in Boston, once I moved to Texas it was so much easier. Plus the injuries added up whenever we traveled North to play outside, I tore my quad in Philadelphia.

doubt that, I’m JAG. And of course I will defer to Belichick. I’ve just seen many many players, both football and soccer, who were just as good in bad outdoor conditions as they were in comfy indoor conditions. It’s not black and white. ok well I can only speak for myself. I played soccer in college. You’re right, the majority on here likely did not play a team sport in college. Beer Pong is not a sanctioned NCAA sport.

Technically a decade is arbitrary can start anywhere in a 10 year span. I’m Team 0 because, decades where always used in cultural reference not mathematical ones. We always refer to the 70s, 80s or 90s. Math does not play into the decade conversation.

The theory i heard of the NFLNW about why Dallas is waiting to fire Jason Garrett is they don’t want him to be HC of the New York Giants. If I was Jerry Jones I wouldn’t worry about it but this is Jerry Jones he are talking about 🙂

I can’t see the Mara’s hiring Garrett.

OMG that would be both ridiculously petty and stupid, all at the same time.

I can’t imagine Giants fans were happy to hear Garrett is/was a candidate
