Y Factors 2019: Patriots at Bengals

-by DNOMN8R314

This’ll be a short one so everyone who still needs to study for finals or shop for Christmas presents can pop out and do so. Fittingly, consider it the non-trademark-infringing Cliffs Notes.

Gio-graphy exam: Joe Mixon is the starter, but Giovani Bernard is still a capable backup and receiving threat out of Cincinnati’s backfield. The Patriots will need to keep an eye out for screens and checkdowns whenever Bernard is in the game.

All I do is Winovich: When facing obvious passing situations, the Patriots have given Chase Winovich plenty of opportunities and he’s regularly gotten pressure. Expect to see more of him.

Coming out of Uzomah: C.J. Uzomah has outsnapped the oft-injured Tyler Eifert 57 to 43 percent; though Eifert (34/301/2) has out-received Uzomah (17/172/0), the third-year Bengal is still a six-foot-six target.

The Indian in the Hubbard: Second-year defensive end Sam Hubbard has taken a starting role for the Bengals in 2019 and is half a sack behind Carlos Dunlap for the team lead. He’ll be a player New England’s tackles have to block.

On the silver screen: The Patriots have rarely used Sony Michel in the screen game due to inconsistent hands, but with New England in need of establishing the running game, trying to get Michel the ball in space may aid there.

BoSoxJim TUMS-O-METER Prediction:
At first look at this matchup, you would think a 10-3 team should easily handle a 1-12 team, but the 10-3 team is the 2019 Patriots who continue to have offensive struggles. And though the Pats dismantled poor teams in the first half of the season, the injuries to the offensive line has made it clear to defensive coordinators around the league how to beat this offense: contain the run, rush Tom Brady, and take advantage of the weak pass protection.
So we come to this Sunday’s road game against CIN. Finding a way to better protect Brady has its challenges. If you consistently keep a TE and/or RB in for pass protection, that’s fewer receiving options on the field. And the options at WR seem to have a problem of either getting open or running the routes Brady expects. So what to do? This is game 14, so time is running out to find solutions. And with Baltimore’s win Thursday night, the #1 seed is all but out of reach barring a miracle.
Still, with all this, a win Sunday and the Pats are in the playoffs. Win out and they get the #2 seed no matter what the AFC West and South division leaders do. Winning 2 of the last 3 may also get the #2 seed, but the game vs. BUF will go a long ways to determine that.
So with what’s at stake and the continuing offensive struggles, even though it’s the Bungles, this still calls for being a 2-case game.

“347 wins – that says it all“
– BB talking about Shula

He’s just confirming that number is going down. Many Shula fans say the regular season win total is more important, because they know it’s one BB probably won’t beat. Too bad they’re wrong. Total wins is clearly more important because it means you won more playoff games.

The Pat’s will figure a way to move the ball tomorrow, I have no clue how but the table turns tomorrow. Whatever you see tomorrow if positive is what they will ride with to the seventh super bowl. Not worry about the D its about the Offense finding a identity and it starts tomorrow. If they are stagnant aganist the Bill’s you can start thinking of the draft but I think they have heard enough and are about to put in work. I really don’t think it will be a evolution of the passing game. I think tomorrow they come… Read more »

TV: NFL Network | Stream: fuboTV (try it free)

Here is why I am asking. My 90 year old Dad wants to watch the game. He has cable but does not have the NFL Network. He doesn’t have a computer or a smart phone or smart TV. He can’t stream. I know some people can ‘t fathom that but it is a real problem for some people.

My point and question is “I thought the NFL had to offer it on free TV in local areas.”

“watch them blow the Bills out and then lay a dud against Miami”

You never know in a football game. If they beat Buffalo and then rest too many players they could be in trouble but I doubt that will happen. BB tells his team to respect every opponent. Especially important is to get a bye week.

I foresee this game to be similar to the first one early this year. Good defenses keeping things tight. Although, I have to believe Wynn, Watson, Sanu and Harry help our offense a bit more than what we had then. And for whatever reason, Lacosse seems to be the target now. I also think Rex will be getting more time, which I’ve been a supporter of. Though, the run game won’t be productive. I want to see some tempo and spread short stuff. I think we win 23 – 16

Regarding the discussion below, my guess is, due to football being such team sport, the only tangible thing voters can use for inclusion, other than raw stats, are the individual awards of Pro Bowls/All Pros/MVPs. The problem with that is there are many “unsung” players who have made an indelible mark on the history of the NFL that WON’T make it in because they lack those individual award. The Pats Dynasty is littered with those guys (Bruschi, Harrison, Wilfork, DMac, Welker, Edelman, Hightower, etc…).

dp73
Member

That is true but I am still holding out hope for some like DMac,Hightower,Wilfork and Harrison.

Harrison situation is a little different in that his talent was recognized but lost Pro Bowl votes based on his personality. I am hoping that will be corrected in time.

It’s my opinion as well. HT does not have the stats and is oft injured. Wilfork doesn’t have the stats either either though his stats are projected through others success. DMAC may have a chance but I wouldn’t hold out hope.

dp73

I don’t think Hightowers career is over yet.
Stats for NT’s don’t tell the whole story, never did and never will.

I think the potential is there for all of them.

Jdog Lemon Head

Jdog Lemon Head

Stats for NTs definitely don’t tell the whole story and that is especially true for Wilfork — other players benefited from him eating up blockers, holding the line, applying pressure, and stuffing the run. But because of lack of stats in general for NTs, there aren’t many NTs in the HOF.

Jdog Lemon Head
Member

Jdog Lemon Head

HTs career isn’t over but I still don’t think he has the stats to put him in, even if he tears it up the next 3-5 years (which seems unlikely based on history). He doesn’t even have many pro bowls. — this is only his 2nd. These are his career status thus far: Tackles: 494 Quarterback sacks: 23.0 Interceptions: 1 Forced fumbles: 2 Pass deflections: 16 These stats aren’t anything to write home about. Kyle Van Noy’s stats look more impressive and he’s been in the league 2 fewer years and wasn’t a starter until a few years ago. Nobody… Read more »

Lastly, you didn’t say, “They will get in” but you’re saying you’re holding out hope they’ll get in. A reasonable person could assume that if you hope they’ll get it that you first have to think they are at least worthy to get in, otherwise I don’t think you’d hope they’ll get in nor do I think you’d single out those three guys that you’re holding out hope for.

Unrelated note, but the Pats fan club in Atlanta has raffles every week at the official Pats sports bar. Every week, for at least a few months now, one of the prizes each week has been a John Hannah signed football. He hasn’t visited the club but others have and have autographed some memorabilia for raffles — Ben Coates and Stanley Morgan to name a few.

I’ll go with what BB said after the Bengals game.

“All right, fellas. That was getting back to good Patriots football there,” Belichick said. “Plus-five turnovers, all right? Taking good care of the football, four picks and a fumble recovery. One hundred and seventy-five yards on the ground, all right? Making progress, making progress. That will be a winning formula: Don’t turn the ball over, run the ball, play good in the kicking game, play good defense, alright? That’ll win for us.” -Bill Belichick

In a few years from now when Devin McCourty with all his Super Bowl rings stand nominated before the HOF. He could be competing against other players that could have more Pro Bowl nominations. Fair or unfair it could affect his ability to get into the HOF. See Rodney Harrison if you don’t think it could happen.

Yeah, if I had tickets for free to visit the Hall of Fame, I would give them to someone who actually wanted to go. I just don’t care. I don’t think a list of players picked by the Peter Kings of the world have any more validity than how Pro Bowlers are selected. They are both a joke.

I have argued in the past with folks on here that he might be deserving of HOF consideration but it’s hard as fans to understand all that he does to make the defense work, even if he doesn’t get the “important stats”. I bet Bill would argue that he deserves to be in.

As regarding Brees getting the TD record, I love Drew and think he’s awesome and that when it’s all said and done he will have the yards, TD and completion % record for a very long time. But he has definitely benefited from Payton’s system and a guaranteed 9 dome games a year, where Brady does not play in a pass first offense throughout and is guaranteed to play 10 games outdoors each year. So to me more power to Brees but what Brady will finish with is far superior and with less attempts and Brady has thrown more TDs… Read more »

In the first post, I said that it appeared Gordon did not have the discipline to overcome his demons/addictions, and in the second post I said “It requires discipline to get past addictions, deep mental strength.” How is that a flip flop? I’ve always been a supporter of Gordon, but I totally understood why he had to go. He just doesn’t have the discipline to save himself. No one can save him for him, he has to find the strength himself. So far he has not. It is… Read more »

Buffalo is coming in to Foxboro believing they have a good chance of winning. As long as the patriots defense do what they did in their last game and the offense doesn’t turn the ball over and executes in the red zone this should be a better game for NE than the last.

I think it will be a playoff type game. I think it will be a good one.

It is a huge game for the Patriots. If they lose to Buffalo, they go from a 2 seed to a 5 seed, which would be exceedingly ugly.

if they both finish 12-4 are you sure BUF has the tie breaker ? I read somewhere NE still wins the division.

Divisional record is the first tie breaker, then record in common games. They would be tied in divisional record at 5-1 if the Bills win (and both win in week 17). So it seems you are correct, as common games include Philly and Cleveland, and the Bills lost both of those. Buffalo has not beaten a team that New England lost to. I had thought conference record was the second tie breaker, and the Bills would win that over NE, as NE has not lost to an NFC team.

the pro bowl is a joke.. The All pro selection is more reflective of who the best position players are in the NFL.

If it’s a joke, then why isn’t it funny that the patriots offense doesn’t have one representative? Or is the offensive production of the patriots the real joke?

Pro bow is a joke and so is the Pat’s offense

I don’t even care why… it’s a selection that is dependent on a third fan voting, a third player voting, and a third magic-hocus-pocus fuckery. The probowl needs to end.

And what’s wrong with fans and players voting?

Nothing.. it’s the ensuing arbitrary selection of players and playing a game that barely resembles real football.

The pro bowl game is a joke and shouldn’t happen for a multitude of reasons but I see no issues with people voting for the players that are performing at a high level and getting acknowledged for their success.

The Pro Bowl is indeed a total joke. No redeeming qualities. I can’t stand to watch it, the rules are just bizarre. I’m not sure what game they are playing, but it’s not football.

IMO, every fan vote should count as half a vote.

What is not a joke that the NFL HOF selection committee uses it in part as justification as to who gets in the Hall of Fame.
