Y Factors 2019: Patriots vs. Chiefs

-by DNOMN8R314

It doesn’t get easier after last week’s Sunday night loss, with the Patriots returning home to greet the Patrick-Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs. Everyone knows the Patriots will need to play at their best in order to finish with a win, so it’s hard to point out Y Factors, as Y Factors are supposed to be the players under the radar enough to miss out on being considered X Factors. But I will try.

Curl up with a good Brooks: While the Patriots have often trusted strong safety Patrick Chung in coverage of tight ends, and the Chiefs have one of the league’s stars in Travis Kelce, Chung’s play has taken a step down in 2019. The veteran safety has played in just nine of 12 games and has recorded just a 60.4 grade on Pro Football Focus. His backup, Terrence Brooks, has fit nicely into the defense after many expected his role to be exclusively on fourth down (though probably not to a Matthew Slater-like extent), and he has graded a bit better, at 66.2. Brooks should continue to see playing time, but will it be in the same role as one might project for Chung, in coverage of Kelce? We’ll find out Sunday.

Fenton my frustrations: Kansas City’s backup at all three cornerback positions, according to OurLads.com, is sixth-round rookie Rashad Fenton, a South Carolina alumnus (a la Stephon Gilmore) who not only contributes heavily on special teams but has begun to carve a niche on defense. Playing in just over 15 percent of the Chiefs’ defensive snaps, Fenton has received a PFF grade of 70.4 while deflecting three passes and intercepting one; he also forced a fumble on a kickoff return last week. While he may not be on the field often, he’s already becoming a player worth watching.

Kris Pringle: Behind the Chiefs’ top WR trio of Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, and Mecole Hardman are two other players who have already shown they can catch a defense off guard. (That pun was intended and is already regretted.) The Patriots have already seen what Demarcus Robinson can do, but this will be their first game against Byron Pringle, a 2018 UDFA who spent last year on injured reserve. Pringle has caught just 11 passes (on 15 targets) for 146 yards and a touchdown thus far in 2019, but well over half that production came in Week 5 against the Colts, as Pringle, targeted eight times in a game where Hill was inactive, caught six throws for 103 yards and a score. He’ll be the fifth option at receiver Sunday – and that’s behind tight ends and running backs as well – but Pringle has shown how well he can produce in Kansas City’s offense.

All hands on deck: Inconsistent hands, both on offense and defense, is a theme that has contributed to both of New England’s losses in 2019. Whether drops and fumbles from wide receivers or missed tackles from a normally reliable group of defenders, these problems are basic issues that should not happen if a team wants to win games. Against the mobile Mahomes, speedy Hill and Hardman, elusive LeSean McCoy, and just-plain-hard-to-bring-down Kelce, the Patriots’ defense cannot afford to let any Chiefs ball carriers out of their grasp. And with Kansas City’s pressurizing front and revitalized secondary, New England’s ball carriers must carry the ball whenever it comes their way.

Cops and Roberts: Aside from his defensive and special teams contributions, Elandon Roberts has become the Patriots’ fullback after James Develin and Jakob Johnson were placed on injured reserve. The Patriots established a strong run game on their first drive against Houston before shifting to the pass, and with the importance of time of possession and New England’s struggles through the air in recent weeks, running the ball may be just as important. Whichever of the Patriots’ staple of backs is given the ball, Roberts will be key in clearing space and allowing the ball carrier to clear the line and make it to the second level. (Also, please throw a goal line TD to Roberts. That would be awesome. And Slater too.)

TUMS-O-METER Prediction:
Well, here we are: another game against the Chiefs, and another game against a very good if not great mobile quarterback. Mobile QBs seem to be the one major weakness of the Patriots defense, which had problems with Jackson and Watson. Still. the Pats were about one foot away from a clean onside kick catch of possibly stealing the Texans game. However, the key problem remains the offensive struggles. The lack of consistent TE options and the continuing integration of two rookie WRs and a mid-season WR pickup still are big issues 12 games in. Yes, they are 10-2, but with BAL consistently playing well above expectations and BUF still very close in the rear view mirror, getting a bye week playoff berth, and maybe even the division, is very much in the air. Still, one more win in the next four secures a playoff spot. SInce they lose tiebreakers for playoff seeding with BAL and HOU, a win against KC is important so they don’t have to be concerned about losing a third tiebreaker scenario. Fortunately this game is NOT in KC but at home. Still, the atmosphere will still be playoff-pitch high after last years AFCCG result. This won’t be easy. Warranted or not, there will be a sense of desperation and concern in Foxboro Sunday afternoon. Prediction: 3 cases.

Josh Gordon, now seemingly functional at Seattle. Other than the injury….why was he really released? Fear of a relapse?….????

rondo723
Member

He’s caught 6 balls for 81 yards and 0 TDs over 4 games. I suspect the Pats would rather try to work in Meyers and Harry and see how big of a role they can claim for themselves than get WR4 numbers out of Josh Gordon.

itsBradyBaby

Umm it’s clear they are easing him in offense .
He knows our offense he could had been more productive if still here .
Let’s not forget he slowed down when he got hurt trying to recover a fumble.

rking88
Member

Easing him in to what? Seattle’s passing offense is basically “run a simple route and look for russ to scramble”… it’s essentially a playground route tree…

The reality is Josh gordon is what he is right now- a guy who catches 6 passes for 81 yards in 4 games…

And if that’s his production being eased in to four games? (A guy who has a 1600 yard season) where’s the patience for “easing n’keal” into the season through the same number of games?

itsBradyBaby
Member

Lol l listen to Pete and Russ, that’s exactly what they said plus the fact there were plays Russ couldn’t get to him last game cus of pocket break down and two miss passes.
Bet if it was a vet we got in mid season we would be saying he need time n blah blah.
If it’s not the PATS it’s not good.

NewEnglandBlight

Lets be real, he could have caught 0 passes for 0 yards over the whole damn season and Nate would still believe we should have kept him.

I don’t get the fear of relapse thing. if he relapses he is gone. If you cut him he is gone

hugo #FreeBoney

hugo #FreeBoney

The risk if that you cut LaCosse or Dorsett. Then Gordon’s gone and you lost a player. I just think people don’t realize how much not having an outside WR who the other team has to respect deep has hurt us. Even if Gordon’s numbers weren’t there, you couldn’t press up on him like you can Dorsett. I don’t think it’s remotely a coincidence that White’s production shrank after that move.

Know-nothing fans only focus on offense stats which is why they think Tony Gonzales is better than Gronk. Fortunately coaches know better – blocking is an important part of a TE’s job. Steve Mariucci explained it perfectly last night, and concluded that Gronk is the best all around TE ever. Peter King agreed and put him at #1 also.

If the Patriots play the Ravens again I wonder if they will have Joejuan Williams play safety/LB in dime. On plays where Ingram steps off the field one way to counter RPO is to have Collins spy Lamar Jackson and have Joejuan match up against TEs in the flat. Protect run and pass. Joejuan would line up as CB and when Lamar takes the pass option, cover the TE but if it’s a run drop in the box where Collins would be.

Lamar Action Jackson is a freaking TD machine! Love dat kid! He has thrown 5 TDS in 3 separate games this year. Brady has thrown 19 all year in comparison. He has seals the MVP tonight and will most likely finish with over 40 TDs and a SB for the year.

am i missing something here… i get that jackson is playing on another level right now… but i just dont understand how he can throw for 4 or 5 touchdowns a game like… 5 times in a season…

its like defenses just don’t cover half the guys on the team

rking88
Member
Free agent
rking88

case in point- he’s throw under 200 yards 6 times this season, but he’s thrown 3 or more TD’s 7 times… including 5 TD’s 3 times…

like, maybe the defense should cover some of the receivers?

NewEnglandBlight
Member

Until refs start calling illegal downfield blocking/offensive pass interference on his horse-sh*t RPO plays he’ll continue to do that.

That being said, if he keeps running the ball his body won’t hold up regardless. This is a flash in the pan QB. Brilliant, but brief.

The Lamar Jackson experiment will all end soon.

Zoocore #WeMissYouBoney
Member

Zoocore #WeMissYouBoney

I think because he’s such a threat with his legs, they focus on that, which opens up plays for the receivers. Look at his yards thrown. He doesn’t have a ton of yards. He just has a ton of TDs. Super efficient, though. Not sure how long it will last though. His body can’t take that kind o beating for long.

It’s sad people work all their lives never earn close to what these guys have and still live a decent life without falling off the cliff or getting involved in crime to keep up.
