Y Factors 2019: Patriots vs. Cowboys

-by DNOMN8R314

Where’s Panic Time when you’re looking for him?

Reading articles and posts this week, the 2019 New England Patriots may be the most doomed, chanceless, worry-enclosed 9-1 team in NFL history. The Patriots will be down from six wide receivers on their depth chart to three, as Gunner Olszewski was placed on injured reserve to make room for Isaiah Wynn, and both Mohamed Sanu and Phillip Dorsett are expected to miss the game with injury. With a group of pass catchers (including tight ends) deprived of nearly all its current and former top targets, Tom Brady has looked off the mark. Even the defense isn’t immune from the verbal alluvion, particularly with Michael Bennett returning to Gillette Stadium this week.

And yet… they’ve won nine games and lost just one.

And here come the Cowboys.

Let’s go.

The case Izzo-pen and shut: There’s a reason I mentioned the tight ends in the introduction, and you all know it. New England’s tight end depth chart consists of Benjamin Watson, Matt LaCosse, and Ryan Izzo, none of whom have played up to their preseason expectations (though Watson had a nice showing last week). So why does Izzo, a healthy scratch against Philadelphia, make the list? First, with Sanu and Dorsett expected to be out, I think it likely that Bill Belichick will keep all three tight ends active to provide extra personnel in the passing game, players who can also help stifle a very good Dallas front seven. Second, I still believe Izzo has been miscast as primarily a blocking tight end; though he has caught just six passes so far in 2019, they have gone for 114 yards (19 yards per catch), including a 41-yard grab and his first NFL touchdown. Though third on the depth chart, I think Izzo can be a better player than his statistics have shown so far. We’ll see if he can show any of it Sunday.

Little Timmy fell down Olawale: With the Raiders, Jamize Olawale was one of the top fullbacks in the NFL. Aside from his blocking, Olawale touched the ball 71 times over his five full seasons in Oakland, averaging 3.7 yards per rush and 10.9 yards per reception, scoring four touchdowns on the ground and three – including a 75-yarder – through the air. But since being traded to the Cowboys before the 2018 campaign, Olawale has touched the ball just once, a 10-yard catch last year, and has played just 11 percent of the Cowboys’ offensive snaps this season. Despite the lack of usage, Belichick, fullback aficionado he is, will be well aware of Olawale’s capabilities. It’s unlikely, but the defense will have to keep an eye on No. 49 whenever he takes the field, not just for his opening up lanes for Ezekiel Elliot, but for his ability to take the ball himself.

Premium rush: The Cowboys’ interior defensive linemen, with hardly an exception, specialize at rushing the passer more than stopping the run. Scan the depth chart, and you’ll find the names of Bennett, ex-third-rounder Maliek Collins, and current second-rounder Trysten Hill, all of whom are pass rushers. Antwaun Woods, Dallas’ starting nose tackle, is a good run defender, and Christian Covington, his backup, isn’t bad either, but the Cowboys are designed to attack the passer rather than prevent running backs from finding yardage. Pick a running back on the Patriots’ depth chart, and he’ll probably see touches this week. From Sony Michel and James White to Rex Burkhead and Brandon Bolden, New England is set up to attack a Dallas weakness, as Belichick-designed game plans are wont to do.

A Thomas to keep: Dallas has already ruled linebacker Leighton Vander Esch out for Sunday, suggesting an increased snap count for Joe Thomas. The former Packer has played well this season, receiving a 76.0 grade from Pro Football Focus despite playing just 21 percent of the Cowboys’ defensive snaps. Thomas has yet to play more than 46 percent of snaps in any game this season, so in the Dallas defense it’s a question mark as to how well and in what roles he’ll perform with extra playing time. While Jaylon Smith and Sean Lee will deservedly take most of New England’s attention, they cannot count out Thomas.

#16 candles: Despite Tom Brady finding frustration with Jakobi Meyers last week after the undrafted rookie ran an incorrect route, Meyers has become the third receiver on the depth chart by default. But before the route error, Meyers caught a third-down pass to extend a New England drive, showing that Brady has been willing to throw to him in key situations. The Cowboys’ secondary is no pushover – three of their starting five (including nickel corner) defensive backs have PFF grades over 70 – so Meyers will not only have to catch targets to keep earning trust, but win matchups and run good routes. That has always been the path to success for wide receivers new to Foxboro, and Meyers has had his ups and downs as any rookie will; with all hope, he can build on the positives from last week and continue to grow in the Patriots’ offense.

BoSoxJim TUMS-O-METER Prediction:
The Pats got back on the winning track by defeating Philly in a close and tense game last week on the road. The defense seemed to find its groove again giving up only one time-consuming TD drive. The offense still seems in limbo. And now come the Cowboys to Gillette, with tons of weapons. This is a classic strong defense versus strong offense battle. Something’s gotta give. Compounding the offensive struggles for the Pats is that both Dorsett and Sanu may not play, seriously depleting their already shaky WR corps. Just as last week, the defense must step up again for the Pats to have a chance to win. Can they contain Dak and Elliot? Can the secondary minimize the production of the Dallas WRs? On the flip side, Dallas has key injuries of their own to contend with. This will boil down to who stays focused the most for a full 60 minutes. Prediction: 1.5 to 2 cases.

I am not a big fan of the Cowboys but I don’t want Buffalo to win and make the divisional race closer.
I don’t think we can take for granted the the Patriots will win every game. Even good teams have bad games now and then.

I just heard from an old friend. He said he has tickets to the Pats / Miami game. Lower tier near the 50. The price of the ticket is I need to do the driving and deal with him being drunk. Out of the 8 home game this game would rank last that I’d want to see but I’m still looking forward to it. I haven’t been to a game since the 90s.

I’m not really a Beaujolais guy, even at Thanksgiving. And the Nouveau is just alcoholic grape juice. I’m more of a dry Provençale rosé guy, or a spicy Alsatian Gewürtztraminer.

@FO_ASchatz
Based on @SportsInfo_SIS charting, the Patriots have only had a broken tackle on 7.5% of offensive plays. That’s the worst figure in the league. The defense has a broken tackle on just 7.0% of plays. That’s the best figure in the league.

I was wrong about Lamar Jackson. He has learned not only to throw, but to read defenses in real time, making him a viable QB as well as an athlete. He is currently the most dynamic player in the NFL, and the top QB overall. But how long will he last taking the pounding of a RB? Not many years, that’s for sure. I think the best way to defend that offense is to bring a run blitz on every down and trust your secondary to cover for the two seconds it would take to force a run. Fill every… Read more »

Let me get this straight:

Jared Veldheer signs with the Pats, retires almost immediately, gets released by New England yesterday from Reserve/Retired, and signs with the Packers today.

i don’t think the Pats could have brought him back. If the reserve means injured reserve, then they already brought 2 back (Harry and Wynn). How the retirement part plays into it i don’t know.

They better because if the offense doesn’t play at a much higher level then the pats won’t be going very far. Luckily the pats have time still to peak and improve on offense as long as no one in critical position gets hurt.

Last year’s offense was so much better and could drop 30 to 40 points on their own. Not even close to the same firepower this year so your “eh” is misguided. Baltimore has a complete team KC was one sided so they are not the same either.

rking88

and last year we had a pourous defense that struggled on third downs and blah blah blah… and didnt really start to play well until the playoffs

i think our offense come playoffs will be better than its been all season, and i think our defense will continue to play great. Im not saying they’re a lock to win anything… and i think that homefield certainly boosts their chances… but i dont think “losing homefield” means baltimore is a shoe-in

nope, didnt say they did. but for the greater part of the season, yes, we’ve had a great defense… i think they had their worst game of the season in that loss, and I think both they and the offense will be better against Balt a second time around

I think it will be important to play Baltimore in Foxboro.

rking88

absolutely home field advantage… thats a tangible thing… but the ravens acting like they’ve already won the superbowl is the exact kind of attitude that can feed this team’s hunger and energy if they do get a rematch

“nobody thinks we’re any good”… it has its place

Opinion Slayer

I wouldn’t conflate the words of a known loudmouth as the voice that represents the whole organization though. Every contending team has the same goal, the only difference is that there’s only one team that has rules about not talking about it.

I had a “half awake epiphany” this morning when I looked at the Bruins Canadiens score. The Canadiens ruined my sports childhood, and nearly 50 years later, just the sight of their ugly sweater brings out irrational feelings of hate.

This is probably how the average football fan feels about the Patriots. Childhoods across the country have been ruined.

I don’t think it’s tough at all.
Jackson is a gifted athlete in a perfect situation, one hit away.
Watson is a franchise QB. He can play in any offense, he can put a team on his back passing the ball, he can run the 4-min offense, he can anticipate and throw into tight windows…

hugo #FreeBoney

hugo #FreeBoney

Small sample size still but the Texans have never lost a game by more than 8 points with Watson as their QB. That’s what the great QBs do, they put the team on their back when everything is going wrong. He’s tough and clutch and his decisions are catching up to his QB smarts.

If it weren’t for his injuries, I’d take him over Mahomes honestly. Mahomes has a better situation/is more physically gifted, and Watson has been banged up too much like Luck, but Watson is a gifted passer and a leader of men imo.

I guess a lot is being made of Harry’s drops – well didn’t JE drop 2? At least the 1 potential TD. I mean it was a freezing monsoon. Drops were going to happen. He also made one of the best TD catches we’ve seen since Gronk’s sideline TD a couple years ago. I think the kid has proven he has good hands and fights for contested balls.
