Y Factors 2019: Patriots at Eagles

-by DNOMN8R314

As fans, we may not know how much post-bye fatigue strikes the players, but it’s certainly struck me. This article should have been written days ago… but since it’s being published on Sunday as normal, you certainly don’t need to know that. Wait….

(ahem)

Pats versus Eagles, Super Bowl LII rematch, and all that. Y Factors. Let’s go.

Shelton from the storm: It’s widely agreed that the Patriots’ key to defensive success this week will be stopping the run. After Baltimore ran all over New England two weeks ago, that key can be specified as winning matchups and better gap discipline from the front seven. With Philadelphia featuring a formidable, potential game-breaking running back duo of Jordan Howard and Miles Sanders, controlling the run game becomes even more vital, and a Patriot who could play an important role in that facet is defensive tackle Danny Shelton. Though Shelton has been on the injury report all week and is listed as questionable, he is a key member of the team’s defensive tackle rotation, a specialist against the run. If Shelton is able to play, he should see plenty of use against Howard and Sanders.

JJAW-dropping: The Eagles will be without two of their top wide receivers, as DeSean Jackson has been placed on injured reserve and Alshon Jeffery has already been declared out. This should elevate the presence of slot receiver Nelson Agholor and tight ends Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert, but it also could easily lead to more targets for rookie wideout J.J. Arcega-Whiteside. Like N’Keal Harry, who is expected to make his Patriots debut Sunday afternoon, Arcega-Whiteside is a tall receiver with a knack for pulling down contested catches. The ex-Stanford Cardinal has just two receptions for fourteen yards this season, but with Philadelphia’s receiving options limited, he could easily see a much larger role on offense, and more targets in the passing game. Fortunately, New England’s secondary should be prepared, having Harry back to practice against, but only on Sunday will we learn how much the Eagles are ready to rely on Arcega-Whiteside.

Slot through the heart, and you’re to blame: As much as the Carson Wentz-led Eagles passing offense has been discussed, chatter about the Patriots’ passing game has mostly revolved around Harry’s presumed debut. But the weakness in the Eagles’ secondary that New England might look to attack is their backup cornerbacks. Each member of the group behind starters Jalen Mills and Ronald Darby – that’s Rasul Douglas, Avonte Maddox, Sidney Jones, and Craig James – grades out below 60 according to Pro Football Focus. As the Patriots have now established Julian Edelman and Mohamed Sanu Sr. as their receivers Numero Uno y Dos, it might be worth keeping an eye on Harry, Phillip Dorsett, and Jakobi Meyers for a decent target share. Any Bill Belichick-led offensive game plan is centered on attacking the opponent’s weakness, and this group of cornerbacks is certainly one of them.

Agholor-ious day: The Eagles’ normal third receiver, Agholor, is not just a twitchy slot player but a speed threat who can stretch a field, meaning the Patriots will have to account for him too. As Patrick Chung’s inactivity this week leaves several guessing who will cover tight ends Ertz and Goedert (a number speculating Stephon Gilmore), Agholor’s sudden elevation atop Philadelphia’s wide receiver depth chart means he should receive extra focus this week. An obvious matchup, and the likely one, will be to have Jonathan Jones cover Agholor, as Jones has been the Patriots’ regular slot corner and at or near the top of PFF’s cornerback grades all year. But no matter the matchup, with the focus on Ertz and Goedert, Agholor should not be forgotten.

TEs out the secret: New England’s current tight end depth chart is generally viewed as desolate in comparison to Philadelphia’s, as the Patriots’ group of Benjamin Watson, Matt LaCosse, and Ryan Izzo has hardly contributed in the passing game and has been seen to struggle in blocking. But their presence in the game – though possibly not LaCosse, who is questionable to play this week – is still vital, as run blockers, pass protectors, and potential targets for Tom Brady. We may criticize, insult, and throw shade at the Patriots’ 2019 tight end depth chart, but they have been shown to produce despite their struggles. This will have to be a game where all three (or two) are at their best in order for the Patriots to leave with a win.

TUMS-O-METER Prediction:
So here we are. The bye week has ended and the Pats will face the Eagles, who were also on a bye week, on the road. Many questions have popped up. Can the team bounce back after their first loss? Have they found consistency on offense?. Will the defense rebound after a bad game? Both teams have key players out for the game. Philly needs a win to stay in the playoff hunt. The Pats have Baltimore breathing down their neck. Something’s gotta give.
TUMS prediction: 1 case.

Interesting question:

Should the Pats pick Tua if he falls in the next draft to late first round?

@AdamSchefter Players out Sunday include JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Conner, Matthew Stafford, Frank Ragnow, Vernon Davis, Lane Johnson, Ty Nsekhe, Devonta Freman, Austin Hooper, Evan Engram, Rhett Ellison, Adam Shaheen, A.J. Green, Olivier Vernon, Leighton Vander Esch, Dee Ford, Joe Staley.
Not that the Pats have been tough to contain lately. But LVE is a big loss for Dallas. Fantastic all-around player.

Yeah cause you’re in tennis. Tennis kids are the worst kids.

I played tennis until I was 14, and I was pretty sh*tty at it by any serious standard. All the other kids playing took themselves SO seriously and thought they were god’s gift to mankind. Honestly the biggest reason I quit.

I tell everyone I’ve played two sports in my life. A fun game played by miserable people and a miserable game played by fun people

Tennis = fun game played by miserable people
Track/XC = miserable game played by fun people

Quitting tennis was a blessing in disguise. The guy who quit with me and I tried track instead. I ended up running track for 6 more years. He’s now a track coach at a D1 program.

rking88

its a shame because it CAN be a great sport and there are some kids who really are great kids… but there is no doubt that there are far too many spoiled, self-centered, and entitled little shits running around out there haha

hugo #FreeBoney
Member

hugo #FreeBoney

I think the big difference between track and tennis is tennis is less measurable. With track, you are what your time is. With tennis you can always have some wiggle room to think you’re better than you are.

rking88
Member
Free agent
rking88

oh absolutely… especially for so many kids who take lessons or clinics but dont really compete in tournaments or real match-play…

I have different parents coming to me every day telling me how good their kid is, and how they should be moved to a stronger level, when the reality is they suck but are never put in a position to find that out

hugo #FreeBoney
Member
Free agent
hugo #FreeBoney

I can see that. Tennis is weird cause there’s a fine line where you cross from competitive with the other player to getting wrecked 6-0 6-0 6-0. Its not a gradual transition of the scores getting worse. You move up the ladder and there’s a wall when you’re out of your depth that just hits you like BAM.

rking88
Member
Free agent
rking88

yeah there’s weird sorts of levels where its almost becomes a completely different sport because of the combination of skill and athleticism

hugo #FreeBoney
Member
Free agent
hugo #FreeBoney

so I was a pusher, part of why I got out of it getting older is cause that stopped working 🙂

hugo #FreeBoney
Member
Free agent
hugo #FreeBoney

also I’d add that I think beyond people getting more athletic with age, I think they become more intelligent/adaptive. I’m lefthanded and when you’re a certain age, the other kids lack the cognitive capacity to really adjust to that, and you have a big advantage. Or they lack the understanding of how to observe your weaknesses within a game to attack them.

rking88
Member
Free agent
rking88

the pusher mentality fits with being a track runner- its that “grind it out and just outwork everybody” type of mindset that i think all players need, but “pushers” just sort of have

That could be, but right now they are predicting gusts of up to 30 mph from 4-8 PM. Basal wind speed of 15 mph, which is not likely to interfere with the game.

If the wind behaves, the rain is an advantage for the offense. So as a defense first team like the Patriots, rain is not our friend now.

“[Rookie cornerback Joejuan Williams] and N’Keal irritate the other side of the ball more than any players at practice,’’ said captain Devin McCourty. “Those are two of our most competitive guys.’’

Will N’Keal Harry and J. Meyers get any separation tomorrow? That’s what it’s going to come down to for the passing game. Cowboys are going to double or even triple Jules and the rookies are going to have to run the right route and make catches. Won’t be surprised pats lose tomorrow if they can’t do that because the TE’s have been just as useless this year if not worse.

Better find every way to get White involve using him as much as possible in different ways.
He’s our third beat player .
Big game to depend on Myers and Harry but we will see because the chances will be there for anyone not named Edelman.
I say force the issue running the ball and again use White as much as possible.
We need someone to get their attention away from Edelman.
He’s been underused so far IMO but I trust if White is given more to shoulder he will deliver.

The Eagles were good at covering the backs and taking away the screen pass . It could see the Pats lining White up wide more. I think Watson is going to have a good game.

As great as he is, there are times you have to wonder: what was BB thinking? In this case, why have Sanu return punts when you already have a so-so reciving group? Sanu out will have a major domino effect.

dp73

So, if it’s not a new subject we can’t discuss it?

A lot of fans think that they should put a returner back there just to make fair catches. I am not one because I don’t think BB with just give up on the play. Last week was a field position game where both teams were pined inside the 20 yard line a lot during the game. I think BB wants the best field position he can get. I hope they can find someone that isn’t a vital part of the offense or defense to help return punts. Henry?

Leighton Vander Esch will not play Sunday at New England because of a neck injury that has flared up and required an MRI, according to sources. Vander Esch will be examined in a few weeks to see if the inflammarion has calmed down. Sean Lee will move to… https://es.pn/2QCDAH7

That’s a big loss for them and a positive for NE.

Maybe I’m just perverse, but I’d rather that none of our guys were injured and none of their guys were injured. Of course, if that’s not possible, better them than us.

If Fuller can stay healthy the Texans could be a real SB contender.

Regarding Myles Garrett.. I don’t know if he’s making it up, mishearing it, or straight up telling the truth.

But… all of the black players on the Steelers raised their eyebrows with that statement. I guarantee you they are going to be asking Rudolph hard questions tomorrow. If they don’t trust his answer then he will be getting obliterated next week.

Rudolph is a self-proclaimed MAGA guy, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Garrett was telling the truth. Watch the video of Garrett after the game when a reporter asks him if Rudolph said anything to him to provoke him.

Ya let’s automatically assume he said it when NO ONE else heard it and he waited a week to bring it up.

JLStokes

#1 I didn’t make the assumption, Garrett made the accusation.
#2 Saying “I wouldn’t be surprised…” means just that. Considering Rudolph’s background, means there’s possible precedent.

what the fuck is his background?

Be clear on one thing: I didn’t insult you or anyone. If you can’t take it, don’t dish it out.

Also, saying I’m “intolerant” because I don’t put up with people who support ACTUAL intolerant people is ridiculous.

I like how a Trump supporter is just assumed to be racist. GTFOOH with that shit.

Trump is a racist and if you support him, well…

I think you’re over generalizing stokes, but I would like to see what Myles Garrett said in the locker room.

JLStokes

I never said that I believe him, I said I wouldn’t be surprised if it was true considering some of Rudolph’s past statements.

I’m not over generalizing anything. Donald Trump is a PROVE racist. Those that choose to support him are willing to either support his ideals or look past those ideals. Both are equaling damaging.

lets see his past statements

Myles Garrett? I mean, it’s entirely possible he said something in the locker room that isn’t on record.

He also stated that he thought his interview with the league was confidential, and they wouldn’t share that with the media.

He’s talking about Mason Rudolph.

That’s like saying “Well, I voted for Hitler, but I don’t support his ideals”.

Agree to disagree.

I don’t have time to sit and deal with people who are okay with racism, sexism and classism ruling the day by support a KNOWN racist/sexist/classist. People and children are LITERALLY dying due to the orange cheetos actions.

wow you just compared Trump to Hitler. what a slap in the face to Jewish people. again you are the intolerant one

JLStokes

Yes, I’m comparing Trump to Hitler. Trump who constantly and consistently displays racist behavior and has made overt moves to imprison, deport and murder people of color.

I’ll keep doing it until you prove me wrong.

that is possibly the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I don’t give a shit what color or race you are and I am a MAGA guy. or whatever you call us.you are the intolerant one.

MrLucky

Umm he went right to the captains of the team and told them he’d never say anything like that. Steelers players are all rallying behind him and Browns players aren’t supporting Garrett at all. Sounds like a bs attempt to get his suspension reduced which is appalling.

JLStokes

No Browns players were around them when he was accused of saying it.

You don’t think Garrett wouldn’t have said something to his teammates before now? IF Rudolph said anything he should be thrown out of the league. What should Garrett’s punishment be for outright lying and trying to assassinate a guy’s character be?

NewEnglandBlight

he might have? I’m not sure we know the whole story, or at least the timeline of events.

It is possible that both Garrett and Rudolph completely believe they are telling the truth.
