Get Bye the Week

-by MAC

Well, here we are at the Patriots bye week. No doubt the team could use the break for the needed rest, treating injuries, game planning for the rest of the season, and so forth. Plus, the bye is perfectly timed for getting ready for the harder part of the schedule. Of course, as fans, we don’t have a Pats game to plan for and watch. So to pass the time, here are some Patriots trivia questions to ponder. I’ll post the answers in a second article later. See how many you get before you search the interwebs. Enjoy.

1. Where was the first ever Patriot preseason home game played?
2. Before the Patriots permanent home of Schaefer Stadium, name the team’s home venues from 1960 to 1970.
3. The Patriots were the first team to sign a player from the United Football League. Who was it?
4. Name the Patriots head coach with the best opening day win percentage.
5. Who scored the first points ever for the Patriots at Schaefer Stadium?
6. Name the Hall of Fame player drafted by the Patriots in 1961 who chose to play in the NFL instead.
7. How many home playoff games were played at Schaefer Stadium? BONUS: Name the opponents and outcomes.
8. Name the Patriots quarterback who appeared in the movie Airport 1975.
9. One of the famous lines associated with the Patriots comes from Tom Brady’s wife Giselle Bündchen after a Super Bowl loss. The first player to do so after Walter Payton did it for the Bears in 1979, name the Patriot who threw, ran, and caught touchdowns in a single game.
10. Billy Sullivan (founder of the Patriots) also worked for another sports team. Name the team.
11. Name the three teams that have gone undefeated in the regular season.
12. Name the minor league team the Patriots fielded in 1973.
13. Name the only Patriots player named as MVP of the AFL All-Star Game.
14. Who was the Patriots first head coach?
15. Name the Patriot with the nickname Sardines after his “lucky charm” was discovered.

If you enjoy this maybe I’ll do it again in the offseason.

TUMS-O-METER PREDICTION:
And of course, even on a bye week we must include the TUMS-O-METER prediction. And since BSJ needs a basal level in his GI tract and bloodstream, this week’s prediction is 1 bottle.

We lose a game:Drop 3-4 spots in power rankings.
49ers lose a game: stay at the same spot in power rankings.
Gotta love the haters.

honestly, I think the 49ers are currently a more complete team than the Pats are.

With a healthy Kittle and Sanders, it’s debatable. But Jimy has to take care of the ball better

49ers OL and rushing attack are way better. That tips the scales for me. Agree on Jimmy G.

dfwpatsfan

They run the ball effectively and their defense brings pressure with the 4-man front leaving the LBs to operate in space. They are a complete team, as long as they don’t turn the ball over like they did yesterday.

turnovers are the ultimate havoc creator. They change everything

I think the defense is a wash between the two teams. The 9ers front line is better, but the Pats secondary/linebackers are better.

9ers have the better O-Line and TEs, the WRs and RBs are a wash, but Brady is better than Jimmy G.

I think they are about equal.

I think their receivers are better

Totally disagree. They have a few rookies, Marquise Goodwin, Dante Pettis and Sanders.

That’s not better than Edelman, Sanu, Dorsett and the Pats rookies.

if you’re just talking about WRs, I’d take the Pats group. If you are talking about ALL pass catchers, I’d take the Niners, mostly based on Kittle and Juscykxyxksks

JLStokes

Of course, but I went position-by-position, so, yeah, the TEs/FBs are better for the 9ers.

HunterCenter

although when talking about pass-catching RBs, I’d take White/Burkhead over Coleman/Breida/Mostert any day

JLStokes

Part and parcel of why I think the Pats/49ers are pretty much equal.

I still just can’t get past how poor our OL and general running game has been. I can’t.

JLStokes

IMO, Mason/Cannon have been injured a good portion of the season, no Andrews and Newhouse is a terrible run blocker. Add in our bad run blocking TEs and it shouldn’t surprise anyone.

Oh I’m not surprised. The reasons for it are very obvious.

Jakobi Meyers has played well. The Pats aren’t relying on them as much as the 9ers have to.

I give slight edge to Pats. because they have Brady, Bill and it. The Niners don’t have it until they prove otherwise

@gmfb
“They were without their top two receiving options, they dropped 9 passes, they had a rookie kicker in his first
@49ers
game, and they were still a makeable FG attempt away from a W. I know it seems bleak, but the sun still rises in San Francisco this morning.” —
@PSchrags

Sooooo where was this context when the Pats lost to the Ravens?

HunterCenter

because the details of the context were much different?

JLStokes

My point was there was zero effort to look at context. It was all “Lamar Jackson is awesome” and “The Pats defense is overrated”.

HunterCenter

fair enough, if you’re just speaking in gross generalities. I saw some decent analysis of the Pats Ravens game that gave way more insight than that, however.

Teams are given more excuses for a loss when they lose skill players than when they miss o-line or interior D-line players.

Plus, it’s the Brady effect, there is a perpetual cliff watch for Brady and one bad game all of them come out of the woodwork.

unfortunately true

Tyler Lockett possibly done for the season, Seahawks took a big hit at WR. Very lucky they picked up Gordon at least.

JLStokes

Whoa.

That’s huge. Gordon’s good, but Lockett was Wilson’s “Edelman”.

dfwpatsfan
Member

Yup exactly, Lockett is Wilson’s safety valve. Local reports here said it is a severe leg injury and was hospitalized in SF. He hasn’t returned back with the team.

itsBradyBaby

We will find out how much Gordon got left., he will have to step up big time.
Did little lady might but two catches were clutch.

JLStokes

Lazar made the point that the routes that Metcalf were running last night are a decent blueprint of how they should integrate N’Keal Harry. I’d agree. Back shoulders, comebacks, slants, screens and “jumpballs” should be more than enough to make an impact as an X receiver.

I was brutally wrong about Harry’s production against the Ravens, but I predict, against the Eagles, he’ll get 3 catches, 55 yards and 1 TD (redzone jumpball).

dfwpatsfan
Member
Free agent
dfwpatsfan

I’ve watched Metcalf about 3-4 games now and he struggles with their option routes. Time will tell if he can elevate himself to be a true #2, but I feel he;s not going to be better than a #3 in the Seahawks offense.

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent
HunterCenter

yeah, I agree. He’s very good at a small number of things, but doubt he becomes a complete NFL WR. But, still plenty of a threat.

JLStokes
Member
Free agent
JLStokes

This is true, but I’m just talking scheme-wise. Having Harry run those routes frees up Sanu and Edelman to do their thing in the middle of the field.

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent
HunterCenter

I agree. I think there are some parallels between Harry and Metcalf.

dfwpatsfan
Member
Free agent
dfwpatsfan

What I meant to say was compared to DKM Harry is a more complete receiver, but yeah for this season I hope they don’t throw the entire playbook at him, I agree with you.

HunterCenter

oh, I do think Harry has a much higher ceiling, for sure.

He cost his team 21 points with his turnovers! The kicker had nothing to do with that.

Nate, he very nearly cost his team the game twice on his first three throws of the drive. And he was equally bad in overtime.
