Ranking the 2019 53-Man Roster at the Bye

-by DNOMN8R314

I do this every year. Let’s go.

(Remember, a low ranking does not mean I think the player has no value to the team.)

53. Cody Kessler, #6, QB: The third quarterback on the depth chart, Kessler currently has the most tenuous hold on a roster spot.
52. Korey Cunningham, #74, T:
Cunningham hasn’t done enough to beat out the struggling Marshall Newhouse, nor to earn a spot on the active gameday roster.
51. Jermaine Eluemunor, #65, G:
Like Cunningham, Eluemunor has not found himself with a role above sixth OL in goal line and short yardage packages.
50. Byron Cowart, #99, DT:
Cowart is one of several rookies whose 2019 has turned out to be a redshirt year, but that does not diminish or deflate their expectations.
49. Joejuan Williams, #33, CB:
Williams is another.
48. Damien Harris, #37, RB:
As is Harris.
47. Nick Folk, #2, K:
The latest in New England’s cycle of kickers, Folk showed accuracy in his first test against Baltimore but lacked range.
46. Jarrett Stidham, #4, QB:
A fourth-round rookie, Stidham may or may not be Tom Brady’s successor, but he’s settled in as the backup this year.
45. Shilique Calhoun, #90, LB:
Calhoun has been a regular in the pass rush rotation and on special teams in a nice little career revival.
44. Nate Ebner, #43, S:
Though he has not taken a defensive snap this season, Ebner has been a core special teamer since he was drafted in 2012.
43. Matt LaCosse, #83, TE:
LaCosse’s 2019 season has been derailed by injuries, but his continued presence on the active roster suggests Bill Belichick sees a productive role for him.
42. Gunner Olszewski, #80, WR:
Olszewski instantly became a fan favorite as the 91st man on the training camp roster and made the team, though he rarely sees time outside of special teams and punt returns.
41. Joe Cardona, #49, LS:
Have you heard his name called this year? No? Good.
40. James Ferentz, #66, C:
At age 30, the journeyman Ferentz made his first career start against Cleveland and has filled in as an extra blocker in some packages.
39. Justin Bethel, #29, CB:
Belichick’s instant move to scoop up Bethel once released by Baltimore has proven helpful right away, as Bethel has paired with Matthew Slater to create a formidable tandem of gunners (lowercase).
38. Marshall Newhouse, #72, T:
Newhouse’s performance this year in place of an injured Isaiah Wynn (who would probably land around 20th on this list) has ranged from passable to letting defenders pass him.
37. Chase Winovich, #50, LB:
Winovich has also appeared in the pass rush rotation and on special teams, but has already netted 4.5 sacks.
36. Ryan Izzo, #85, TE:
Izzo’s receiving (few opportunities) has been superior to his blocking (many opportunities), but the second-year tight end has a lot of room to grow.
35. Deatrich Wise Jr., #91, DE: Wise has been just fine on the defensive line despite the switch to a 3-4 front.
34. Benjamin Watson, #84, TE:
The veteran was initially released after his reinstatement but was re-signed with injuries to Matt LaCosse, Ryan Izzo, and Jakob Johnson; Watson, though no longer a star, has helped steady the tight end postion.
33. Jake Bailey, #7, P:
Bailey has shown off his dominant leg on punts and kickoffs all season.
32. Elandon Roberts, #52, LB:
A first-time team captain, Roberts is still limited in his role as a run stopper and special teamer (and goal line fullback), but he plays that role well.
31. Jakobi Meyers, #16, WR:
The rookie has been the fourth option at receiver throughout the year, but Meyers has shown reliability in key situations despite the talent ahead of him.
30. Ja’Whaun Bentley, #51, LB:
Bentley has been a regular in the linebacker rotation; though he hasn’t made a signficant sophomore leap, he’s been a steady contributor on the field.
29. J.C. Jackson, #27, CB:
Jackson’s snaps have varied depending on the game plan, but the second-year UDFA has continued to be a physical presence at corner.
28. Brandon Bolden, #38, RB:
In his return to the Patriots, Bolden has taken on more regular an offensive role, filling in for the backs ahead of him and finding the end zone three times.
27. Rex Burkhead, #34, RB:
Burkhead continues to be an excellent complement to Sony Michel, versatile enough to carry between the tackles or run routes in the passing game.
26. N’Keal Harry, #15, WR: While Harry has not yet taken the field, having spent the first half of the season on injured reserve, he has the draft position to come with high expectations, even though no one yet knows exactly how he will be used.
25. Danny Shelton, #71, DT:
Shelton has been a solid presence as nose tackle, building off his solid postseason in his second season as a Patriot.
24. Phillip Dorsett II, #13, WR:
While it appears evident Dorsett’s ceiling is as a team’s third receiver, the ex-Colt has been trusted in key situation and is tied for the team lead this season with four receiving touchdowns.
23. Duron Harmon, #21, S:
Harmon is just steady in the defensive backfield; I don’t think I can say anything about him that hasn’t been appreciated already.
22. Terrence Brooks, #25, S:
Expected to be a core special teamer, Brooks has impressed on defense and has played regularly – and successfully – in the secondary.
21. Jason McCourty, #30, CB:
McCourty has been as reliable a second corner as last year.
20. Mohamed Sanu Sr., #14, WR:
Tom Brady has already expressed excitement about working with Sanu, who should provide a reliable target opposite Julian Edelman.
19. Sony Michel, #26, RB:
Though his statistics are down, Michel appears to be regaining some of the burst he showed in preseason.
18. John Simon, #55, LB:
The veteran may not be a big name on the defense, but Simon has been a pain to opposing offenses, his 2019 stats including three sacks, a forced fumble, and an interception.
17. Matthew Slater, #18, WR:
Slater is as incredible as ever on special teams, netting his first touchdown this year on a blocked punt.
16. Ted Karras, #75, C: With David Andrews out for the season, Karras has thrived at center, showing all he exhibited as a backup and taking his play up a level.
15. Adam Butler, #70, DT:
Another rising young player, Butler currently leads all New England defensive tackles in snaps and has been regularly pressuring opposing quarterbacks, netting 4.5 sacks so far in 2019.
14. Marcus Cannon, #61, T:
Cannon’s 2019 has not been up to its usual nature, but the Patriots right tackle has still been reliable in keeping Tom Brady upright.
13. Patrick Chung, #23, S:
Chung’s name has been mentioned less this season, but he remains important in keeping New England’s secondary strong.
12. James White, #28, RB:
White continues to be a reliable security blanket for Brady, ever elusive with the ball in his hands.
11. Lawrence Guy, #93, DT: Guy has become a sturdy force in the middle of the line, and even netted an interception against Cleveland.
10. Shaq Mason, #69, G:
The strength of the Patriots’ offensive line continues to be its interior, and Mason’s push is a major part of that.
9. Joe Thuney, #62, G:
As is that of Thuney, who like Karras is in a contract year.
8. Jonathan Jones, #31, CB:
Jones’ rise to becoming one of the top slot cornerbacks in the game has been one of the biggest surprising of the Patriots’ season, as the former UDFA has been rated by PFF at or near the top of all NFL cornerbacks this year.
7. Julian Edelman, #11, WR:
As the Patriots have rebuilt their receiving corps, Edelman remains as important as ever and has played to that level, reminding the league that he is a legitimate #1 receiver.
6. Kyle Van Noy, #53, LB:
Van Noy has been one of the Patriots’ top pass rushers this season, also tallying 4.5 sacks through nine weeks and generally wreaking havoc in the front seven.
5. Devin McCourty, #32, S:
McCourty has been a turnover machine, intercepting five passes through this point in the season, including one in each of the first four games.
4. Dont’a Hightower, #54, LB:
The leader of the Boogeymen, Hightower has continued to wreck the opposition with big hits in key moments.
3. Jamie Collins, #58, LB:
Collins has exploded in his return to Foxboro, leading the team with six sacks, returning an interception for a touchdown, and generally destroying the other team.
2. Stephon Gilmore, #24, CB:
Gilmore has been an island, locking down wide receivers and dominating against the quarterbacks he’s faced.
1. Tom Brady, QB, #12:
His stats may be down, his offensive line may be patched up, his receivers may be new, but Brady is still the best ever to play the game, and his talent is still visible on the field.

Bye week prediction for the second half of the season.

I think Pats will win vs PHI and lose vs KC. I also think they can go 1-1 vs DAL and HOU. If they beat BUF at home it is good for 13-3 and, probably, a n. 1 seed.

Then, in the playoffs anything can happen, as we have seen last year.

I think the game vs. KC is at home. Also, 18-1 or GTFO! Mattdog®

I’ve been holding on to Chris Herndon on my bench since he came back from suspension but today because of players on byes, I need to play him. Will he actually play? Should I just cut my losses and pick up Jack Doyle? Oh, you fantasy football TEs. I long for the days when I had Gronk and didn’t need to think about that position!

All 3 of my teams have several players on a bye week. For my starting lineups I am using duct tape and aspirin.

It’s a bad week for players on bye but the good thing is it’s the same for everybody. What do you think of my conundrum: Doyle or Herndon?

There’s no better TE than Doyle to pick up?

In my ESPN league Doyle is ranked 17th. I would role the dice with Herndon that he could be better than Doyle before I would cut Herndon.

Interesting…I might do that. Just afraid he gets another zero and costs me the game. At least Doyle will score some points.

https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/patriots/curran-why-no-1-seed-no-guarantee-and-other-patriots-bye-week-takes “There’s an addendum to Belichick’s oft-lamented blind spot when it comes to drafting wideouts (which I’ve done myself recently). While he may have fanned on a bunch of outside receivers over the years, it shouldn’t be ignored that in 2010 he drafted the most productive single-season tight end combo in NFL history with Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. Both were dice rolls. One went on to become a Hall of Famer, the other went to jail for murder so the “How’d that work out for ya…” conversation is complicated, to say the least. But tallying up the pass-catchers he… Read more »

Malcolm Mitchell is another one. We’ve also seen countless veteran WR, like Ochocinco, come here and be unable to get on the same page with him. I don’t think it’s rookies vs. veterans, just who can work hard and get on the same page with him.

Seems LSU who have been very good in the past but have always come up short actually has a legit QB this time around.
I think LSU is better than Ohio State.
Love to see a Clemson-LSU championship but there are still many games to play

Interesting watching the real #1 QB in the draft play
” Burrow currently ranks in the top five in terms of passer rating from the following categories: under pressure (1st), kept clean (5th), with play-action (4th), without play-action (4th) and on deep passes (2nd). To boot, he’s the national leader in adjusted completion percentage (84.9%) among the 87 quarterbacks with at least 115 attempts”.

Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward fractured his left hand during Saturday’s game at the San Antonio Spurs.
Hayward left the game in the second quarter after making contact with LaMarcus Aldridge during a pick. He headed straight to the locker room.
The Celtics said an X-ray exam confirmed the diagnosis and that Hayward was ruled out for the game.

It makes sense with the idea that game-planning would be tougher with less time to prepare. I don’t know. Has this been a thing with other WRs for you?

MattDog #N'KealHarryToThePats

MattDog #N'KealHarryToThePats

With Tyrell Williams in particular he seemed to be riding a TD streak on fewer targets that would be tough to keep going so I was shying away from him anyway.

yes, I always have bad luck when I start receivers who play on Thursday night.. there are exceptions to this I’m sure.. but I suspect, statistically, they just don’t produce as much as sunday WRs do.

I’ve always hated starting players on Thursday games in any position. But I think it’s more about avoiding getting off to a bad start and “playing from behind”.

DMC on N’Keal: “I think that’s been the good thing to see him back out there running around,” added McCourty. “But it’s hard when you’re a young guy, you’re a rookie, and you miss that much time. You just come out there, and I think it’s everything in your game you have to work on. I think as an older guy, that’s been exciting to see him there every day after practice, getting work in. He’s doing his best to try to get back out there.” Brady on N’Keal: “He’s missed a lot of football,” Tom Brady said during a… Read more »

MattDog #N'KealHarryToThePats

RBs: Alvin Kamara, Aaron Jones, Sony Michel, Ronald Jones
WRs: Juju Smith-Schuster, Golden Tate, Terry McLaurin, Tyrell Williams. In our league, you play 2 RB, 2 WR, and one flex. So I could potentially see this being a bad trade for me because I’d have a lot of really good RBs but not enough good WRs. Aaron Jones and Alvin Kamara are must starts and I did have faith that Sony was as well. Plus Ronald Jones seems to be earining more carries. I could potentially trade one of the surplus of RB’s for another WR.

personally I’d probably try to offload Sony just because its hard to know what sort of usage he’ll have going forward, although Jones might be a better sell-high candidate… his high volume right now might be when he’s worth something useful…

and since Tampa Bay seems to be a pass-heavy offense, I would think jones might not have a very consistent floor
