Tom Brady’s 74 (+2) Touchdown Receivers: TD12 Trivia

-by DNOMN8R314

Just over halfway through his twentieth NFL season, Tom Brady has extended his record of unique touchdown receivers to 74, four more than the previous record holder (Vinny Testaverde, 70) and six above the closest active player (Drew Brees, 68). If you include playoff touchdowns, the number of players jumps to 76.

With a number of active players on the roster who could be added to the list before season’s end, here’s a dozen trivia questions about the players to catch a touchdown pass from Tom Brady, hereafter referred to as a “TD12.”

All questions below include Brady’s two postseason-only TD12 recipients unless otherwise specified.

  1. How many skill position players on the current 53-man roster have not yet caught a TD12? (Bonus: who?)
  2. Brady has so far thrown touchdown passes to three new unique receivers this year. When was the last season that more than three players were added to Brady’s list?
  3. In Week 9, Mohamed Sanu became the most recent player added to the list. Sanu is the second Rutgers alumnus to catch a TD12. Who was the first?
  4. Before Sanu, Ryan Izzo was latest on the list with his touchdown catch against Washington. . Izzo, who graduated from Florida State, was the first former Seminole to grab a TD12. How many other universities in Florida are represented on the TD12 list? (Bonus: How many players from other Florida universities?)
  5. The first unique TD12 recipient of 2019 was Antonio Brown, who became the fourth player wearing No. 17 to catch a TD12. Who were the other three?
  6. There are only three eligible wide receiver jersey numbers that have not been worn by players who have caught a TD12. One is No. 12, worn by Brady himself. Another is No. 89, which is retired in New England for defensive end Bob Dee. What is the third, and which current Patriot, if any, wears that number?
  7. Antonio Brown became the second wide receiver surnamed Brown to catch a TD12 after Patriots Hall of Famer Troy Brown. What is the only other surname common to multiple TD12 receivers?
  8. Who caught the most TD12s in 2018?
  9. Every season of Brady’s career (excluding 2000 and 2008) has seen a single untied leader in TD12s, except one, in which two players tied. What was the season, and who tied? (Hint: both players caught seven TD12s that year.)
  10. Excluding postseason scores, which player, minimum five touchdowns, has averaged the longest distance per TD12?
  11. Which is the only university which boasts five alumni who have caught TD12s?
  12. And the question I ask every time this comes up: who are the six players to catch TD12s of 80 yards or longer?

I haven’t got anything to fill up space, so let’s

JUMP

straight to the answers.

  1. Seven: four wide receivers (N’Keal Harry, Jakobi Meyers, Gunner Olszewski, and Matthew Slater); two running backs (Sony Michel and Damien Harris); and one tight end (Matt LaCosse).
  2. 2016, when Brady added five to the list: Martellus Bennett, Chris Hogan, and Malcolm Mitchell were the first three before Brady connected with Matt Lengel in the penultimate game of the year and Michael Floyd in the finale.
  3. Tim Wright: six TD12s in 2014, his sole year in New England.
  4. Four universities and seven players: four from Florida (Aaron Hernandez, Jabar Gaffney, Reche Caldwell, and Chad Jackson); and one each from Miami (Phillip Dorsett), Florida A&M (Brian Tyms), and Central Florida (Doug Gabriel).
  5. Aaron Dobson (four TD12s), Chad Jackson (three), and Dedric Ward (one).
  6. 16, worn in 2019 by Jakobi Meyers, who in this year’s season opener became the first player to catch any pass at all from Brady.
  7. Johnson: Bethel Johnson caught four, Charles Johnson caught one, and Chad Johnson (whose legal name was Chad Ochocinco during his year in Foxboro) caught one.
  8. James White, with seven.
  9. 2004, in which the leaders were David Patten and Daniel Graham.
  10. Chris Hogan: 11 touchdowns for 319 total yards averages an even (okay, odd) 29 yards per score. (If the minimum number of TD12s is dropped to four, Donté Stallworth becomes the leader: four touchdowns for 196 yards, averaging exactly 49 yards per TD12.)
  11. Colorado: Daniel Graham leads the group with 17, Christian Fauria caught 13, Tom Ashworth one, Charles Johnson one, and Nate Solder one in the postseason only.
  12. Wes Welker (99 yards), David Patten (91), Shane Vereen (83), Troy Brown (82), Aaron Dobson (81), and Sam Aiken (81).

More bye week content to come. Hope you’re enjoying the week off – although few of us probably actually have the week off.

DMAC thinks that Harry is an exceptionally hard worker. This is a different take from TB12’s statements about him, which I took as implying that Harry needed to work harder. But I def like what Devin has to say: “I think he continues to get better,” McCourty said Thursday on WEEI’s Dale & Keefe. “One of the things he does a really good job of is playing hard in practice. At times, he pisses off the DBs because he works his butt off — out there blocking, out there getting open. I think that is the good thing about seeing… Read more »

Yep, but I greatly prefer DMAC’s opinion. Unfortunately, it’s probably TB12’s that matters more. If he no likey, he no throw-ee.

Maybe we’re reading too much into TB12’s comments. Or maybe it’s more about the mental approach to the game and knowing his assignment to the level of perfection that TB12 demands.

I thought Tom’s words were more “Keep working and we’ll see how it works out”.

Frankly, Tom’s decision doesn’t really matter. Bill’s the one who chooses who’s active. Now if N’Keal gets out there and is running the wrong routes and dropping passes, then I’ll start looking at what Tom’s saying.

IMO, I just don’t think Bill wanted to overwhelm the rook on his first game out. Probably had something to do with Jakobi Meyers only getting 1 snap on offense as well.

Sure, BB decides who is on the roster, but it’s up to TB12 to throw him the ball or not throw it. Brady’s the guy with the ball in his hands, it’s up to him.

I’m really curious why Harry was activated before the Ravens game to be made inactive. If he wasn’t activated couldn’t he travel on a road game? If that’s the case, then Belichick would have wanted him to experience an adverse atmosphere from the sidelines. I can’t think of any other reason.

NHBruh

Making him inactive might have been a game-time decision. Had they not activated him, they would have effectively made the same decision but possibly earlier than they would have liked to. They didn’t lose anything by activating him.

I can see how throwing him out there on a Sunday night game, on the road against a tough rival might not have been the most “controlled” environment to start his NFL career. He got to see how bright the lights were and how intense the game is first hand. Now he’s got 2 weeks to get ready for the real deal. Another byproduct of him just watching is he got to see a lot of what NOT to do (fumble, quit on routes, penalties, etc…). Though, I wonder why they didn’t have him travel with the team like they… Read more »

Random thought: If Antonio Brown had originally put down the phone and NOT been cut by NE, I wonder if NE still makes the trade for Sanu?

dfwpatsfan

They wouldn’t because Gordon would be a #3, Dorsett #4 and Meyers/Harry #5 in the depth chart. The effect of AB getting the boot is Gordon being the collateral damage.

NHBruh

Without AB, but with Sanu, wouldn’t it effectively be the same? Why is Gordon the collateral damage?

dfwpatsfan
Member

Positional snaps. Sanu is a slot/Z type with Edelman overlap. They still need a X which AB and Gordon would have filled. Somehow they felt Gordon is not a reliable X (and probably think Harry is?) and decided to part.

If AB was still in the roster, Gordon’s snaps could have been managed and possibly the leeway to keep him versus Harry this season would have been longer. Pure speculation on my part.

Hurley is on point. It’s not surprising that the NFL would shadow-ban Antonio Brown like this but it’s such an egregious example of how little they care about following rules or adhering to rules. And where is the NFLPA in all this?

Neil X
Member
Free agent
Neil X

Strongly disagree with this. The league can’t suspend a player who isn’t under contract, they have no standing to do so. Those are the rules that the NFL is adhering to. It seems clear that the league thinks they have adequate evidence to suspend him if he is signed, so that is scaring teams away from him. Think of the Benjamin Watson situation. He was told he would be suspended, and he decided to retire. He wasn’t suspended until he signed with the Patriots. The NFL is actually doing what they are supposed to be doing in this case.

JLStokes
Member

They had weeks to suspend Antonio Brown when he was under contract with the Raiders and Patriots and chose not to do so.

Neil X
Member
Free agent
Neil X

The incident that is going to result in his suspension is the doxxing/harrassment of his female artist and her children that AB did 3 days before the Patriots cut him. The Pats knew it was coming and cut their losses. The league would have acted that weekend, or the following Monday at the latest.

JLStokes
Member
Free agent
JLStokes

They can make the announcement that he’ll be suspended effective immediately the minute he gets a contract. This allows the team to not have a nebulous idea of what his future holds.

For example, if the Chiefs want to sign AB and they know he’s suspended 4 games then they can make the decision whether or not to shoulder that “burden”.

Neil X
Member
Free agent
Neil X

NO, they cannot. That would invite a lawsuit. It’s basic employment law here. As a corporate entity, you can’t punish someone who is not in a business relationship with you.

But what has happened is that teams likely know how long the suspension will be. The NFL can’t publicly announce it, so we fans don’t know, but that’s irrelevant.

hugo #FreeBoney
Member
Free agent
hugo #FreeBoney

The get it over with and suspend him effective when he signs. Dont leave it hanging over all the teams to intimidate them out of signing him.

Neil X
Member
Free agent
Neil X

That’s exactly what the league will do. What makes you think they won’t? Teams don’t want to sign him because they know it’s coming, and they know it won’t be a short suspension.

dfwpatsfan
Member
Free agent
dfwpatsfan

NFLPA should be watching this closely since this is an example where the league colludes with the team owners blatantly. I wouldn’t be surprised Kraft kicked out AB when Goodell let him know that the league was planning on suspending him indefinitely, at the very least that gave the Patriots a chance to recoup the cap loss next season.

From PFT:

The one year (and perhaps only one year) pass interference replay-review experiment has resulted in limited reversals of calls and non-calls made on the field.

According to the league, 63 total replay reviews of pass interference calls and non-calls have occurred through the first nine weeks of the season. Of those, only nine decisions made on the field have been overturned by senior V.P. of officiating Al Riveron and/or his lieutenants.

JLStokes

The refs have clearly all agreed to not reverse their decisions. They hate it and this is their protest.

But the overturn decision isn’t made by the refs, it’s made by Al Riveron and other NFL muckety mucks.

I was not under the impression that that was the case. I thought the refs on the field made that call.

Hunters’ guns, truck confiscated after alleged poaching in Middlebury- MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (WCAX) Two young men had their guns and a truck confiscated after being accused of poaching in Middlebury, and game wardens say this isn’t their first time. From The Athletic: Members of the analytics community often find themselves gaining access to the NFL’s decision-makers with the chance to show what they can offer, and the Patriots are not above listening. While the team does a lot of its studies under a cloud of secrecy and handles them in-house, Belichick and Ernie Adams aren’t opposed to sitting down with someone from the outside and seeing what they have to say. A few years back, before the kickoff rule changed, one of those guys wanted to hit the New England duo with something they absolutely had never considered. That… Read more »

Identifying cars that one has seen before is becoming increasingly difficult as the number of colored cars diminishes. I swear that 90+% of the cars on the road currently are black, white or gray/silver. Cars with colors are increasingly rare. There are a fair number of red ones out there, and some blue, and the occasional rare copper or yellow.

I always say that a loss makes the team focus, and is ultimately a good thing. Especially a late-season loss, which we will most likely see. That said, I am worried about the run defense. I believe they can scheme better to stop the run, but it had better happen before they face Zeke Elliott. And I worry about the offensive line. Seriously, they can’t find someone better than Marshall Newhouse to play LT? If Korey Cunningham is worse, why is he even on the roster? What did everyone think of the officiating this Sunday? They seemed pretty quick to punish the Patriots. They failed to call out two or three pick plays that were obvious penalties from the Ravens. Not to say that swung the game but still..it wasn’t balanced officiating IMO.
