Y Factors 2019: Patriots at Ravens

-by DNOMN8R314

Like last week’s Pats-Browns game, the Pats-Ravens rivalry is packed full of storylines. But since it is a rivalry, the storylines are more frequent, numerous, and intense. This year’s edition of the game includes:

  • the electric and explosive Lamar Jackson-led Baltimore offense against New England’s unyielding defense;
  • the 31st and 32nd picks of the 2018 NFL draft (respectively, Sony Michel and Jackson) facing each other;
  • like in 2007, the Patriots are unbeaten at the time of their clash with the Ravens, and that game is being re-penned second by second this week;
  • a matchup between this year’s first-round wide receivers, Marquise Brown and N’Keal Harry;

and countless more.

So let’s instead talk about five players who may be under the radar this Sunday night.

Please don’t squeeze the Harmon: With Patrick Chung back in the lineup and Devin McCourty intercepting pretty much everything thrown his way, Duron Harmon’s defensive contributions have fallen out of focus. But even as the third safety, Harmon has always had a significant role in the defense; so far, he’s picked off two passes this year. Though often used as a deep safety, the Patriots have played a lot of cover-zero formations this year, meaning Harmon’s usage is not just single-faceted. Two of the Ravens’ most potent pass catchers could be players whom Harmon could be tasked in covering – tight end Mark Andrews and receiver Brown – so it should be expected that Harmon plays early and often in Baltimore.

Onwuasor and dryer: Despite the secondary built mostly from high draft picks, including homegrown Marlon Humphrey, free agent Earl Thomas, and trade acquisition Marcus Peters, many players in the Ravens’ front seven – including a number of starters – are late-round picks or undrafted free agents; that list includes Baltimore’s 2019 leader in tackles, linebacker Patrick Onwuasor. (I feel bad for any grammarian who comes across the preceding sentence.) Having risen from part-time middle linebacker to starter in the front seven, Onwuasor has graded poorly in Pro Football Focus’ ratings, but has been near the ball enough to lead the Ravens with 30 tackles despite missing two games. Even being near the ball, Onwuasor could disrupt New England’s offense… or New England could target him.

Bowser’s castle: One player who has made a small rise in Baltimore’s front seven, and the earliest draft pick in that personnel group, is edge rusher Tyus Bowser. Though playing in a reserve role with no starts this year, Bowser has posted two sacks and a 71.1 PFF grade. The Ravens have recently invested in their edge rushers, with Bowser, rookie third-rounder Jaylon Ferguson, and fourth-year fifth-rounder Matthew Judon (Baltimore’s sack leader with four) their top trio now that Pernell McPhee is on injured reserve. Patriots offensive tackles Marshall Newhouse and Marcus Cannon struggled against Cleveland’s Myles Garrett and Olivier Vernon last week; while the three Ravens are a step down, they should still present a challenge for the offensive line, which will look to improve from last week and keep Tom Brady upright.

In a Harry situation: Harry’s activation from injured reserve Saturday was generally expected, but most of the discussion around New England’s offense has been their lack of consistency and identity, rather than the role Harry will fill on the team. Harry’s projected use has been on contested throws and in the red zone, and while Patriots fans got a glimpse of the former in the preseason, we haven’t yet seen the latter. We can’t even pinpoint Harry’s place on the depth chart; the top four is clearly Julian Edelman, Mohamed Sanu, Phillip Dorsett, and Jakobi Meyers, but Harry might land anywhere in that grouping. Should he be on the active gameday roster, this will be Harry’s first game action, so he probably won’t see a lot of playing time, but his use might give observers an idea of how the team intends to use him during the rest of his rookie season.

Folk tales: Nick Folk has replaced Mike Nugent as the Patriots’ kicker, and his performance on field goals and extra points is not expected to be secure. While Jake Bailey should continue to handle kickoffs, Folk will have one job that is technically two jobs: sending footballs through the uprights. He’ll be under scrutiny in Baltimore, but one advantage of being the kicker is there’s much less playbook to learn. As such, Folk should be focused entirely on his kicking, and his experience in the AAF could be advantageous, having kicked in game situations much more recently than Nugent. We will see how Folk performs starting Sunday evening.

BoSoxJim TUMS-O-METER Prediction(s):
Prediction 1: “A lot!!! Biggest test of the season so far.”
Prediction 2: “10 extra strength tablets. The Pats will get out early on the overrated Ravens, and Jim will be staring forlornly at the truckload of TUMS sitting in his driveway.”
Response to Prediction 2: “The Ravens have a good team.”
Response to response to Prediction 2: “Fine, 11 tablets.”

Baker Mayfield has the lowest passer rating in the NFL when not under pressure this season per @NextGenStats. He is the only QB with more INT than TD passes when not pressured.

Well that’s certainly… telling…

This is all because of Mayfield’s hurt feelings over Hue Jackson taking a job with the Bengals last year. #YearLongTrauma

DK Metcalf is balling in SEA. It’s crazy to think NE could have had him and N’Keal, it would have been fun to watch Brady throwing it to those two big dudes.

He’s not a good route runner, in fact struggles in some of Seattle’s option routes. He is pretty good at making contested catches. If the Patriots had drafted him, he could take some of Gronk’s routes but that’s really about it.

Brady’s interception looks so hopeless because Sanu stopped running on his route. If he continued, it would have been a contested 1-on-1 ball.

To put the Patriots defense in perspective after allowing 37 points to the Ravens…

1985 Bears: Allowed 38 points to Dolphins

2000 Ravens: Allowed 36 points to Jaguars

2003 Pats: Allowed 30-plus 3 times

2013 Seahawks: Allowed 34 to Colts

It happens.

@gregauman Here’s what’s crazy: Bucs’ 230 points scored in eight games is their most ever through eight games, and they’re 2-6. Scored 229 last year, went 3-5. Eight highest-scoring Bucs teams ever at midpoint of season, none of them had winning records. Best went 4-4.
Those two first halves add up to 459 points and 5-11. Really wild.

Joking. But I give him a ton of the credit. He always gives us problems. I don’t think it’s one player that hurts us so much as the coordinator putting his players in the best possible situations to beat us. Gary Kubiak is another one who used to give us fits.

I think the best way to deal with Jackson is using a fast DB that can tackle as a spy, instead of a LB.
I would have put J Jones on that job all game.

MattDog #N'KealHarryToThePats
Member

MattDog #N'KealHarryToThePats

I’d prefer not to use a spy on him as he’s so unique that one guy can’t stay with him from either a size or speed equation. I think you got to defend him with everybody. I think Lazar or somebody mentioned that most of his runs came on design runs based on misdirection and not on QB scrambles. I definitely think the coaches and players learned something and the next time they play him they’ll have refined their approach.

I’d prefer to remember the words of Gloria Clemente, as played by Rosie Perez, in the great film “White Men Can’t Jump”: “Sometimes when you win, you really lose, and sometimes when you lose, you really win, and sometimes when you win or lose, you actually tie, and sometimes when you tie, you actually win or lose. Winning or losing is all one organic mechanism, from which one extracts what one needs.”

We’re you’re on the road, you’ve got to play well in all three phases. Offensively, we didn’t do a good enough job. Too many missed opportunities.”-Tom Brady So, there it is and we move on. @cpriceNFL A few positives from last night after a quick rewatch: •Sanu with 10 catches for 81 yards and a touchdown while playing every snap. •The Patriots averaged 4.4 YPC, one of the best outings of the season for a running game that was averaging 3.2 YPC coming into the contest. •Lawrence Guy was all over the place. •And the fight displayed in the second quarter–where New England turned a 17-0 deficit into a 17-13 game at halftime thanks in part to Dont’a Hightower taking a flamethrower to his teammates on the sideline–was good. Question is how they’ll respond after… Read more »

All fair. I thought they’d beat the Ravens but that it would be a nail biter (anyone predicting a Pats blowout victory was/is a lunatic), but I’m going to say that the Pats will absolutely crush the Iggles. Pats are now pissed, and BB has a lot of film and motivation to work with, and extra time to do it.

I am encouraged that they were a James White-tripping-over-air moment away from tying that game at the half. Was looking like a complete disaster early. I also give credit to responding to the Edelman fumble with a solid td drive.

hurley breaking down the grounding play is great… —>

I would love to get an explanation from the league as to why Brady is the ONLY qb to get called for grounding in situations like that. Its not a throwaway, he has a receiver who was interfered with, the ball is clearly going through the field of play, its not “intentional grounding” its a missed throw…

Well, it has seemed to me in the past that maybe the single weakest thing in TB12’s game is throwing the ball away in a way that doesn’t get penalized. He’s never been good at it, it almost always seems marginal to me. Not a comment on this particular instance of it, just in general.

–The best part about living in New England is that at this point, so many people have completely lost the ability to see the world clearly after the Patriots lose a football game. It’s not as if these losses don’t happen. Despite all the dominance and championships and whatnot, the Patriots have lost 3.6 games per season since 2011. run blitzes maybe, but I still think the right approach is to try and keep Jackson in the pocket. Lesser of multiple evils. Although he proved last night he can sustain drives and move the chains, not just make chunk or playground plays.
