Y Factors 2019: Patriots vs. Browns

-by DNOMN8R314

There are far too many connections between the Patriots and Browns for various sports media to cover them all. Bill Belichick with the chance to win his 300th game against the team for which he won his first, Josh Gordon losing the chance to face his former team, the battle of ex-Georgia teammates Sony Michel and Nick Chubb… all these have been covered to bits (though I haven’t seen much of the Michel/Chubb thing). These could be discussed all day, but Sunday afternoon, the matchup will come down to players on the Gillette Stadium field. Here are a few Patriots who might be worth noting.

My kind of Guy: Lawrence Guy’s steady contributions as a starting Patriots defensive tackle have gone under the radar. Never a sack producer or a statistical standout, with just 21 tackles so far this year and no sacks, Guy’s contributions come as a run stuffer and a big man to take up space in the middle of the line. With the Browns boasting one of the most productive young running backs in the game in Chubb, Guy will be a player depended on to keep Cleveland from controlling the game through the ground.

The Bolden the beautiful: It’s time to recognize Brandon Bolden as a legitimate offensive contributor for the 2019 Patriots. While still a special teams standout who plays limited snaps on offense – just 13 percent so far this season – Bolden has turned several into big plays, including a pair of goal line touchdowns and his back-shoulder grab against the Jets last week. With Rex Burkhead’s injury having kept him out of the past few games, Bolden has filled in that four-down role, and even when Burkhead returns, Bolden should receive his usual handful of touches a game. However, given what he has done with those touches, it looks like No. 38 can be considered an exciting player with the ball in his hands.

Phillip my cup, mazel tov: With Mohamed Sanu replacing Josh Gordon as the Patriots’ #2 receiver, New England boasts a starting pair of wideouts who excel at finding open spaces in defensive coverage. Cleveland’s defense will likely focus on Sanu and Julian Edelman, which could open up opportunities for the reliable Phillip Dorsett II. Despite catching just 18 passes so far for 243 yards, both fourth on the team, Dorsett leads the Patriots with four receiving touchdowns and has neither dropped a pass nor been intercepted when targeted in 2019. While he has not been shown to be more than a third target in New England’s offense, Dorsett has been one heck of a third target, receiving comparisons to Danny Amendola’s tenure for his knack for making key plays on third down and in the end zone. While Sanu will be watched this week to see how he develops with Tom Brady as his quarterback, Dorsett could be the guy who makes a key play, not just this week but any game this season.

Schobert and earnings: While New England’s defense has received deserved accolades for their dominance through the first seven games of 2019, the Browns boast a strong defense as well. Cleveland features top-five picks like Myles Garrett and Denzel Ward on the field, but the centerpiece of their defense is linebacker Joe Schobert. In the Browns’ six games, Schobert leads the team with 62 tackles; has recorded one sack, forced fumble, and fumble recovery; and has not missed a single defensive snap. Schobert has the versatility to cause problems for the Patriots rushing and passing offense, so Brady and company will need to identify No. 53 on every play to prevent him from throwing their offense out of sync.

Do your Ogunjobi: The Browns’ defensive line boasts a pair of star edge rushers in Garrett and Olivier Vernon, but the main man in the middle, Larry Ogunjobi, can be a problem for offensive lines as well. Ogunjobi, like Guy for New England, has not been a statistical standout but has recorded a trio of sacks, perfectly solid for a defensive tackle and on pace for eight through the season. When paired with former first-round pick Sheldon Richardson, the Browns’ front four has the talent to be as solid as any in the league. New England’s offensive line will continue to be tried, and while Bill Belichick and Dante Scarnecchia will be doing all they can to make sure the line is prepared, only on Sunday will we learn how well they are prepared for their latest test.

BoSoxJim TUMS-O-METER Prediction:
OK. I’m back… for now. Someone will have to fill in again next weekend as I’ll be out of town again. Anyway, on to the Browns. It’s never a dull moment at Gillette; signing, trading, cutting players, and such, all still go on at a fast pace as the Pats try to strengthen the WR, TE, and OL positions. Will there be success? How soon will Sanu catch onto the offense? Who will fill the FB role this week? It remains to be seen. The Browns pretty much represent the last of the easier part of the schedule – it gets tougher after this. Still, the Browns can’t be completely overlooked as they do have some talent on both sides of the ball. And one wonders when the law of averages catches up with the Pats defense. They are bound to have one or two off-games from here on in. So, with that and the offense still putting the pieces together, this will be a 1.5- to 2-case game. However, looking down the road, we strongly recommend BSJ contact the TUMS manufacturers for the second half of the season. Truckloads may be needed. Enjoy the game!

I think I have finally achieved that age where “gain an hour’s sleep” has morphed into “wake up an hour early” 🙁

Anyway, happy game day, everyone. I will be unable to watch the game, as tonight is Froling #1’s 19th (!!) birthday dinner with Dad.

That was the most gruesome sports injury I have ever seen. He was out before he hit the ice, then massively slammed his head again as he fell out of control. I really thought he might be dead. He never moved while they put him on a stretcher. But he is at least talking at this point.

Is this what you’re referring to?: “He’s missed a lot of football, missed a lot of training camp, missed eight regular-season games,” Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said, “so he’s just got to try to work at it every day, and it’s going to be up to him to put the effort in. “Everyone’s there to help him, but you’ve got to go out there and you’ve got to do it and earn it and earn the trust of your teammates and coaches and stuff. It’s good to have him out there.” …I dont know if that comes across as “He… Read more »

What are the chances that Van Noy signs an extension here? Seems to really be thriving and becoming a fan favorite. Was a very average player before coming to the Pats. Wondering if a team flushed with cap space offers him a big deal in the offseason.

Another thing I heard on NBC Sports Boston, though not sure who said it – maybe Ted Johnson.

The Pats tell their RBs to take what’s there and not lose yards dancing around in the backfield – so sometimes a RB’s instincts are coached out of them here

“so sometimes a RB’s instincts are coached out of them here”

That’s a great point and I can totally see it with Sony sometimes. Also, the complete and total emphasis on ball security may sometimes hinder his ability to get yards because he seems to be so focused on not fumbling. Makes sense from a coaching/big picture point of view.

An opening remains on the Patriots’ roster for the second consecutive Friday, per the NFL wire. N’Keal Harry could make it 53 at 4 p.m. ET Saturday, but remains eligible to be activated from injured reserve up until Nov. 5.

I think it is obvious something Gordon did (and it could have been multiple issues) might have trigger BB to make the decision to release him.
The decision was made on the day he was expected to return to pratice and after they cut Eric Tomlinson (a decision they later reversed).
I think Gordon was late for something and BB thought it was time to cut him, after some episodes with him (including last season ban).

This does beg the questions: If Seattle is willing to pay his salary and were surprised he made to them at 28, wouldn’t they have likely been willing to give up a 7th on Tuesday? Was the roster spot that important last week considering they had a one open this week? And if nothing was able to get done, what would’ve been different in waiving him the way it worked anyway?

Yeah he was in practice that morning too. I don’t put much stock into Curran, he mentioned that Gordon’s been late to practices and meetings etc. Probably felt suspending him might cause him to relapse, and didn’t want the responsibility anymore. Unfortunately we can only speculate.

Would trading Gordon instead of IR and waive affect the comp pick formula next year? That’s the only thing I can think of.
