Y Factors 2019: Patriots at Redskins

-by DNOMN8R314

In Foxboro, this has felt like the year of old friends returning. Brandon Bolden, who caught a TD pass the last time New England faced Washington, is back after a year in Miami. Benjamin Watson, who has not been activated from exemption but is still on the team, is back after nine years in Baltimore and New Orleans. Jamie Collins, famously traded away to Cleveland in the middle of an eventual Patriots championship season, has returned with a force. Also Jordan Richards is here.

With the wind suddenly knocked out of my intro, here’s Y Factors.

Thompson machine: Washington’s Chris Thompson is one of the most underappreciated receiving backs in recent years. Though his seasons have frequently been shortened by injury, Thompson has been a steady pass catcher, corralling at least 35 balls in every season since 2015, and currently leads the FedEx Field Flotilla with 20 receptions (Terry McLaurin tops him in receiving yards by six). How the Patriots decide to limit Thompson’s impact is currently unknown, as they have several options for covering him; my best guess is that perhaps J.C. Jackson will see more time on the field, whether directly covering Thompson or opening up another cornerback to cover him. But no matter who, the Patriots will have to keep an eye on Thompson to keep Washington’s offense from moving.

All I do is Quinn: The home team’s slot receiver, Trey Quinn, might be another unsung weapon on the Washington offense to keep an eye on. The former Mr. Irrelevant has just 15 catches for 109 yards and a score this year in a tepid D.C. offense, but has the speed to break a play deep and the agility to get away from the opposition’s defensive backs. It would be unsurprising to see Patriots slot corner Jonathan Jones in coverage on Quinn, but Quinn’s ability to open a game comes not only on offense, but special teams, as he serves as the ‘Skins’ punt returner. New England’s coverage units have been questionable, and they’ll need to be improved this week to win field position and thus help the defense prevent points.

Meyers to go before I sleep: Jakobi Meyers may be the Patriots fourth receiver and only see the field occassionally, but the rookie has shown a good grasp of the offense for this point in his development. Whether on as a matchup decision or to spell another receiver for a few snaps, Meyers has earned his place on the New England roster and on the field. With Washington presenting a top cornerback trio of Josh Norman, Quinton Dunbar, and Aaron Colvin, Meyers could get even more opportunities to go after the opposing secondary. Plus, he’d be another addition to the TD12 list, and Tom Brady has yet to throw a score to a player wearing No. 16. (I live for little things like this.)

TEs for two: Though Watson was not activated for Sunday’s game, the roles of Ryan Izzo and Matt LaCosse will still be worth watching. Both have caught only two passes, negating their role in the passing game, a role Watson has been considered by outsiders to fill. It will be noteworthy to see how the Patriots use their tight ends, assuming both are activated – LaCosse’s injury has kept him off the field – and if their presence suggests how Watson will be used, assuming he does come back from his exemption. We’ll find out soon.

The Bailey news: When the Patriots placed Stephen Gostkowski on injured reserve and signed Mike Nugent, many speculated that rookie punter Jake Bailey will handle kickoffs. If this is so, it should be worth noting not just Bailey’s kicks compared to Gostkowski’s, but if the additional role of kickoffs affects his punting. Bailey punted and kicked off at Stanford, so this will not be unfamiliar, but it will be new in a professional environment. The kickoff coverage units will also be in focus after the Richards signing, but the man kicking the ball deserves just as much attention, both on his kickoffs and punts; hopefully, there won’t be the need for too many of the latter.

BoSoxJim TUMS-O-METER Prediction:
This will be short. Normally this would be considered a large mismatch and Vegas is treating it as such. However, the Pats are playing a desperate team with a desperate coach clinging to his job. Will WAS put up a fight for themselves or have they stated giving up? Also, WAS will most likely start a different QB (McCoy) to try to spark the team playing at home. The Pats still have some injury concerns. Therefore, what normally would be a 1- or 2-bottle game has been elevated to a half-case.
NOTE: I (MAC) will be out of the country for the Oct. 13th and 20th games, so if someone wants to be a “guest TUMS prognosticator” for those 2 games, please feel free to do so.

A 50 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a low around 50. North wind 14 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph

Not a lot of rain, but the wind might make it adventurous. Brady has excelled in the wind previously, but a lot of that comes down to receivers adjusting as well. A great day to watch the game from home.

Being a short week, maybe they should rest Gordon or Edelman if there injury is severe and lean on the TEs and RBs split wide. It will be a bad statistical day for Brady and the offense but I feel the defense can anchor it well.

Interesting that they felt that Jakob Johnson was more worthy of a spot considering how little he plays and how little they’ve gotten at TE. I still wouldn’t be surprised to see him re-signed at some point.

JLStokes

To be fair, so much of the offense incorporates the Fullback now, so I’d argue that he was necessary. Now I can’t defend keeping, say, Izzo over Watson.

I dunno how good Johnson will be. I just think it’s pretty clear the team isn’t willing to take a FB off the field and just line up differently. So Watson being a better TE than Johnson is a FB won’t save him.

it’s funny how we kill baseball players who juice, but don’t care when football players do it (still cheating)

Opinion Slayer
Member

Opinion Slayer

The term “juice” is the problem. I guarantee you that what Watson got on was a doctor approved level of HGH and other peptides along with some low testosterone dosage, which all improves quality of health for older players. The problem is that people think that all PED’s are the same or harmful. If the league cared about the athletes health they would allow athletes to use science to better their health and performance.

dfwpatsfan
Member
Free agent
dfwpatsfan

No what’s funny is why we’ve collectively agreed it’s O.K. for an injured football player to take a shot of Toradol to help ignore an injury, but not a shot of testosterone to help that injury heal faster.

Naw, these are the games where you use to really clean up issues and/or don’t take your foot off the peddle. The defense needs to stay “hot” and the offense needs to figure out what it does well and execute.

Stomp all competition, no matter how wounded. No complacency.

Kerthwap
Member

I don’t think Bill likes the phrase “resting the starters” to preserve them. It’s just as likely you get other starters injured when they’re forced to cover for less skilled players besides them. It sets a bad “team” precedent, that this player is more valuable to the team than you are, so we’re going to protect them from injury.

Bill might however decide that “This practice squad player had an amazing week of practice, let’s reward him and put him in the game.” Yeah, it’s pretty much the same thing, but the attitude matters.

I loved the article from yesterday pointing out how the best defenses in NFL history didn’t exactly face the stiffest competition regularly. Adds remarkable context to the run the Pats are enjoying right now. Even the Seattle Seahawks face inferior competition including Chad Henne, Matt Schaub, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Kellen Clemens, Mike Glennon, Eli Manning (didn’t score a single point lol) and Christian Ponder. Meanwhile, they lost to Andrew Luck (who put up 34pts), Colin Kaepernick (only 19pts) and Carson Palmer (only 17pts).

Though, gotta respect who they did beat: Newton, Brees (only allowed 7pts), Matt Ryan, Kaepernick and Palmer.

The secondary is prob a bit better with continuity, growth from JC and Jon Jones. But I’d say the biggest difference between last year and this year is the DL play. Shelton and Butler improved a ton. That’s what’s letting them roll out that 3 man front and deploy Collins/KVN the way they are. They did a lot of the same 3-4 look stuff last season too. It didn’t work early in the year because they got run over on early downs. Then when 3rd down comes along, they don’t have enough cushion to blitz. But Shelton and Flowers and… Read more »

4. 2011 – 185 (-29)

Is spending $60 on an advent calendar filled with 24 specially imported German beers a waste of money? If not, is my Christmas decorating complete?

Three of my four grandparents were born in Berlin, I’m very fond of German cuisine. But German beer is really boring. Nice quality Pilsners, no doubt, but if you want something hoppy, forget about it. Marzenbier, which they serve at Oktoberfest, is chock full of caramel malt, I find it disgusting.

Now I dig the roasty malt that you get in Marzens and Dunkels. Pilsners can get a little too sharp with the Saaz hops (or Hallertau, if you can still find it) that they use in traditional pilsners, and Weissbiers are wholly uninteresting to me. Gimme something dark and chewy and I’m happy.

Yeah, those styles don’t appeal to me at all, but Germans do those better than anyone else.

Hopefully the Yankees can finally win another WS – it would be sad to fans of the reigning champs if they don’t

Don’t think I’ve ever seen more downvotes on a post here.

It was a joke to Mattsky

Clearly only two here saw the point that the Sox are still the champs, and the “finally” was meant to portray it’s been a long time.

If they don’t win it all, simply getting further than the Sox this season means nothing

Both of the fans who liked your post are Yankees fans. Worst sarcasm ever. You might try writing in English next time.

I want the Yankees to keep winning, because that will mean that NYCFC will have to move to a new stadium for the MLS playoffs, which may give Atlanta United an advantage. Not that any of you care.

Hello all. I won’t be on for awhile after today. Wedding and cruise time. Still packing.

My quick TUMS prediction: 1 case. Why? Short week, injuries and maybe bad weather. I’d be interested to see who makes the official prediction and what they predict when I get back.

Need to vent about Watson being released. BB is always good for at least one glaring GM failure in team building each year. This year it’s so obvious. Gronk retires, Allen is let go, and all you do is bring in a handful of mediocre vets which you promptly release before week 1. The only viable one is off the team for the first month, which everyone (including teammates) is eagerly waiting for for a spark at the position, and then BB releases him??? This seems to fit the category of empirically “NOT best for the football team”.

Gronk screwed them (on purpose IMO) by retiring so late – they really were stuck – if Watson were a better option he’d still be here (unless his $ is needed for help elsewhere)

I don’t know that they had any better options once Gronk retired (I don’t agree that he screwed them on purpose). Were there any decent options available via FA? The cost to move up and draft Hockenson was likely way too high. They are probably looking at it like, the best thing that we can do is improve our team in other areas. I don’t know but at this point I trust BB knows what the fuck he’s doing.

Agreed, Mattdog. I suppose Andrew Luck screwed the Colts on purpose too.

He’s got many ad Meyers on this blog. I’m sure he’ll be fine.
