Y Factors 2019: Patriots vs. Jets

-by DNOMN8R314

Storylines leading up to Week 3’s tilt against the Jets:

  • Antonio Brown
  • Battle of the 199s (Tom Brady vs. Luke Falk)
  • Antonio Brown
  • Antonio Brown
  • Antonio Brown

I think that sums it up.

And yes, I’ll mention all five of those storylines in the Y Factors this week. After all, they all have the potential to affect what happens on the field Sunday afternoon, so why wouldn’t they hint at which underrated players have a major impact?

No need for a long intro. Let’s get into this.

Jakobite rising: Antonio Brown’s Friday release opened up opportunity for two rookies with similar first names: receiver Jakobi Meyers, who caught one pass for 22 yards in the season opener, and fullback Jakob Johnson, who did not receive an international exemption from the Patriots and was therefore eligible to take Brown’s spot on the 53-man roster. As the fourth receiver on the depth chart, Meyers should at least find himself active on game day, as he was Week 1, though he’s still behind the trio of Josh Gordon, Julian Edelman, and Phillip Dorsett. But as an undrafted rookie, fourth receiver is still a fine spot for Meyers to develop while earning his time on the field. Johnson, in contrast, might have a major role in Sunday’s game, as James Develin has already been ruled out and both Matt LaCosse and Ryan Izzo are listed as questionable. He’ll be key in establishing any sort of run game for New England if that’s what the game plan leans on, and even without, Johnson is capable of playing as a receiving fullback. Keep an eye on Nos. 16 and 47 Sunday – now you know the names to go with the numbers.

Korey in the house: With Marshall Newhouse designated the Patriots’ left tackle while Isaiah Wynn recovers from turf toe on injured reserve, it will be easy to point to him as the replacement offensive lineman to watch. However, eyes should also focus on Korey Cunningham, acquired from the Cardinals in the final week of the preseason, and the fill-in for Marcus Cannon should he miss another week. Cunningham blocked cleanly in Week 2, allowing no pressures, but he, Newhouse, and the rest of the Patriots offensive line will have a challenge against a strong Jets defensive line (Leonard Williams, Quinnen Williams, Henry Anderson…). Dante Scarnecchia will do all he can this week to prepare every New England offensive linemen for the talent on New York’s front, but it will be up to the players, whichever see the field, to execute.

Slot machine: Fourth-year defensive back Jonathan Jones has risen from core special teamer to slot cornerback to vital piece of the secondary. Having received a contract extension keeping him in New England through the 2022 season, Jones has played up to and beyond that level through the first two weeks of 2019, receiving Pro Football Focus’ highest grade among cornerbacks to this point. But nor has Jones remained a slot cornerback, as he replaced the injured Patrick Chung at safety during Super Bowl LIII and has moved between the two positions this season, receiving a start at safety last week. While it’s likely Bill Belichick’s game plan will be to stop Le’Veon Bell and make Falk beat them through the air, the new Jets quarterback comes from an air raid system at Washington State, so he won’t be out of his element throwing the ball. But however the Jets offense tries to beat New England, expect Jones to be a major part of stopping them.

Ifs, ands, and Butlers: Although two weeks is a small sample size, it looks to be enough to start recognizing Adam Butler as a starter, not just a rotational defensive lineman. Butler has led all New England defensive tackles (I consider Michael Bennett a defensive end) playing in just under 42 percent of defensive snaps so far, boosted by a 60-percent snap rate against the Dolphins last week in which he recorded four tackles (three solo) and two sacks. The Jets have invested in their interior offensive line this year, trading for Kelechi Osemele from Oakland and signing Ryan Kalil out of retirement, which will present an increased challenge to Butler and the Patriots’ defensive line. If New England wants to keep Bell in check and harass Falk, they’ll need to win their matchups up front, and though the personnel game plan will change from week to week, Butler could easily be a significant player no matter what his role.

Down on the corners: While the Jets have a highly-touted safety duo of Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye, respectively their 2017 first- and second-round draft picks, their cornerbacks have been less than stellar to start the 2019 season. Aside from slot corner Brian Poole, whom the Patriots faced when he wore a Falcons uniform during Super Bowl LI, none of the Jets’ cornerbacks have a PFF grade above 70. Their play has been bad enough that Trumaine Johnson, whom the team signed to a $72 million contract before last season, was benched to start their Week 2 Monday Night Football matchup against Cleveland. Even without Brown, the Patriots have a strong wide receiver depth chart, but observing that they should win their matchups on paper doesn’t mean a thing. What will matter is if they can beat their cornerbacks on the field Sunday afternoon; if so, New England’s offense should show they are more than comfortable with the personnel they have.

BoSoxJim TUMS-O-METER Prediction:
Here we are: the first Jets game of the season. And the Pats had a relatively calm week of practice… oh wait, the AB drama. Yeah. That. Well, the Pats are fine at WR… now… and later in the season. The big question is: what about the OL? Yes, this is a pathetic Jets team, but they would love to upset the Pats. But with the ever shifting OL, some key injuries, and so on, this may not be as easy as it could be. I understand GSK is sending BSJ more chalk since he used a lot up this week. However, as always, the Pats should focus well and get the job done. This should set up a meeting of 3-0 teams next week. But for this week, your TUMS prediction: 3 bottles. (Remember, a case is 10 bottles.)

More FF advice: I want to pick up Golden Tate before his suspension is up. Would you drop: 1) John Ross, Cin 2) Terry McLaurin, Was 3) DeMarcus Robinson, KC…I’ve been offering up all three in trades trying to get assets so I don’t lose them for nothing but no bites. Should I drop any of them for Tate?

Well, Pete Carroll was given two chances in the NFL when we said that. He turned it around when he was finally given full control but I feel like we’ve seen plenty of Urban and I think his strengths don’t conform to what makes NFL coaches successful.

The #Chargers have activated RB Melvin Gordon and signed WR Andre Patton to the active roster, with the Gordon move being an indication the team plans on playing him just a few days after returning from his holdout.

If the pats have to pay AB all his money and all they got in return was 1 TD for it, that will really suck. I can see why Brady and BB would be pissed about losing him, especially TB12. AB would have made his life so much easier on the field. Freaking text messages…

BoSoxJim

The dumbass would have been fine if he didn’t include the accuser in the text chain.

What’s shocking is that this guy is so dumb and yet is probably going to walk away with at least $9MM for 1 game. He’s also going after the Raiders (although I doubt they were as dumb as the Pats were in their handling of this situation).

If Kraft were a devious person, he could send someone to convince the lawyer of the 2nd accuser to press charges against AB for intimidation (or whatever they call it).

The alleged crime (if he’s charged) happened while he was at Gillette. I think that can void his guarantees.

Although, since he was big part of negotiating the past CBA, You would think he would know how he could and couldn’t void AB’s guarantees before releasing him.

so.. who gets released when Watson comes back– Izzo or Lacosse?

BoSoxJim
Member

BoSoxJim

Probably LaCosse. Izzo is the only inline blocking TE they have. Plus, LaCosse can’t stay healthy. They could have kept them both had they not signed Kessler (who could be the one cut on Monday….although what would have been the point of signing him in the 1st place?).

hugo #FreeBoney
Member

hugo #FreeBoney

I dunno Jim. They seem to like LaCosse, and while Izzo has acquitted himself honorably, he hasn’t really played well at all either, so he looks like a fungible piece. We’ll see.

NewEnglandBlight

BoSoxJim

What good is having someone who is on the training table most of the time? Also, LaCosse may be a better receiver, but he’s not an inline blocker. They are having enough trouble running the ball as it is. When Watson gets back, LaCosse would spend most of his time on the bench anyway.

BoSoxJim
Member

BoSoxJim

What receiver are you keeping on the sideline so you can run an offense with Watson and LaCosse on the field at the same time?

hugo #FreeBoney
Member
Free agent
hugo #FreeBoney

I haven’t been impressed by LaCosse either. I just think when trying to guess what they’ll do, it’s keep him over Izzo.
Izzo is a nice story cause he was a 7th round pick and missed a season, but he’s still been the weakest link on the field pretty much for the offense.

BoSoxJim
Member
Free agent
BoSoxJim

LaCosse becomes redundant when Watson gets back. Izzo gives them something nobody else on the team can give them (an inline blocker who defenses at least have to consider as a possible target in the passing game).

I’m not saying he’s playing particularly well so far, but they don’t have anybody else who can perform his function.

BoSoxJim

I’m not saying you are wrong, Hugo. They paid LaCosse a good amount of money. But he’s unreliable and replaceable.

hugo #FreeBoney

It’s two things for me:
1. the money
2. the fact that when he’s healthy he’s gotten a heavy snap load even though they barely throw to him, and he ran with the 1s all summer

A lot of crazy things (like last week) would have to happen for the Pats to lose.

I am still concerned about having Newhouse at LT (even though he did well last week). He steps up in weight class this week. If he can hold his own (without actually holding), they should be OK.

I don’t think the media interpreted Belichick’s answer regarding analytics correctly. When specifically asked if analytics contribute to go for it on 4th and short or two point conversions, he replied less than zero. Because analytics cannot model situational awareness; how tired is the defense, how’s the offense blocking at the point of attack and so on. He was vague on how analytics help the organization because obviously that’s his trade secret.

In-game analytics may help to a certain degree if the underlying conditions however uncertainty quantification with so many variables is a difficult aspect.

I didn’t hear about this topic being discussed but I mean of course they play into it. Isn’t studying an opponents tendencies considered analytics?

MattDog #N'KealHarryToThePats

MattDog #N'KealHarryToThePats

I mean, if they are asking if he considers the league-wide percentage of 4th and 2’s that are converted and whether that factors into his decision, I can understand that has little value because there are so many different factors that go into each situation, but there are numerous bits of data that are analyzed and considered in that situation that would fall under analytics.

My wife also gets all side orders sometimes. She likes the “Meat Plus Three” which is one BBQ item and 3 sides. They have changed a TON of their menu since I was there last. Recipes changed. It is not the same as it used to be. The catfish was excellent, but not what it used to be. St. Louis ribs were not good. Didn’t finish them. Dirty rice is great, and they have a new “BBQ beans” side that has yummy chunks of brisket in it. Don’t get the St. Louis. Everything else was nice.

Tom Brady’s new Mr. Reliable With the release of Antonio Brown last week, along with news that Julian Edelman is dealing with a rib injury, Tom Brady and the Patriots are counting on some other receivers to step up and keep the offense moving. Phillip Dorsett is certainly making a case for an expanded role, as the former first-round pick leads the Pats with three receiving TDs, and recently snapped a streak of 26 straight targets caught, the second-longest such streak since 2009 (Michael Thomas had 27 straight in 2018). During yesterday’s game, Rodgers scrambled and dove head first to get the 1st down. In the process, he did get hit and landed on the ground and fumbled the ball, but he was ruled down (because he was — ground can’t cause a fumble). I don’t know if I was hearing things but I could’ve sworn I heard the commentator say something along the lines that it wouldn’t be a fumble anyway because diving head first is just like giving yourself up. Um…what?

As soon as a QB dives forward, it’s an act of giving himself up. The play is dead the moment he touches the ground.

MattDog #N'KealHarryToThePats

MattDog #N'KealHarryToThePats

I never heard that rule before. If he dives feet first, he’s giving himself up but if it’s head first trying to get the first down he’s just like any other ball carrier. Unless that’s a new rule.

Jdog Lemon Head

Jdog Lemon Head

That’s also what I thought. if you dive forward, you’re not “protected”…otherwise, why slide feet first and lose a body length as opposed to diving forward? (Other than the obvious that you could get seriously hurt diving head first).

MattDog #N'KealHarryToThePats
Member
Free agent
MattDog #N'KealHarryToThePats

Wow, I hadn’t heard of that rule. That is for all players, not just QBs. And also, they say that the ball is spotted where the player left his feet. So what’s the point of diving head first anyway? Might as well just go down so you don’t get killed.

The article makes it sound like it’s all players but it must be just for QB’s because of this: Interesting indeed: Imagine it’s fourth-and-goal in the final seconds of the game, a quarterback whose team trails by five points drops back to pass, then sees an opening in the middle of the field, runs toward the end zone, and just as a linebacker approaches at the 1-yard line the quarterback dives head-first into the end zone. That won’t be a game-winning touchdown anymore. It will be the quarterback giving himself up at the 1-yard line. The first time that happens,… Read more »

And what about QB sneaks? That would mean it’s no longer a TD when a QB dives head first and reaches the ball across the plane of the endzone? That makes no sense.

BoSoxJim

No, that still counts as a TD. What the QB can’t do is dive, land outside of the GL and then slide in.

When he dives head first, they’ll mark the ball where it is when the first body part touches the ground after the dive.

I’ve been seeing so many articles lately talking about bill going rogue to sign AB, brady being mad AB was cut, and bill wanting to keep AB despite Kraft putting his foot down…

And they are all referencing Tom Curran and Ryan Russilo and their reports of sources…

I wish those guys would eat a dick and disappear. It’s just so tiring to hear the gossip

Spoke to a few nutritionists about why Cam Newton may be struggling with performance and injury recovery. They all said the same thing:

His vegan diet.

There’s NFL precedent for similar struggles, too. A deep dive into the science behind that theory:
https://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/nfl/carolina-panthers/article235295427.html

And no, Tom Brady is not a vegan (or vegetarian) even though a lot of people seem to think he is.

Agreed. His diet/lifestyle is very healthy. I mean more some of the claims about what makes th,e healthy are abused i.e. “no strawberries because they acidify you” or something which is nonsense.

BoSoxJim

However, there are people that have nightshade sensitivities (strawberries aren’t nightshades). For those people, they need to avoid a lot of the things he does. If you don’t have that sensitivity, then there is no need to eliminate them from your diet.

He is paranoid about introducing anything that might cause inflammation (or disrupt pH levels) so he chooses to be militant about avoiding those things.

It isn’t harmful to do that, but it also isn’t necessary for 99.9% (I have no idea if that is the real %) of people

BoSoxJim

One thing people jumped all over was about how they thought he was advocating replacing sunscreen with drinking more water.

It was a short side anecdote (not part of the main text)about how he used to get burned easily as a kid but now he can get an adequate amount of sun (never says how long that is) and that he doesn’t get burned or if he does his skin doesn’t peel (actually the part about hydration and sunburn recovery is sound, just not the sunburn prevention).

I think he regrets including that in the book.

SamiG

My point is examples like the harm of strawberries on pH is garbage and there is already so much garbage pertaining to diet and nutrition that he is just contributing to it.

BoSoxJim
Member

Yeah, but nobody is going to get sick if they never eat strawberries.

I can’t remember the last time I ate a strawberry. It has nothing to do with protecting my health. I just don’t really care for them.

Shortcake, it’s a proven fact that shortcake is the saddest of all the cakes. Have a strawberry shortcake Kerthwap! “No, no thank you. “Watching your waistline, Kerthwap?” No, that’s not it. “Then have a strawberry shortcake!” Grrrr.

Really liking the switch back to a 3-4 this season. HT, Van Noy, Collins, Simon, Roberts, Bentley, Calhoun, Winovich – plenty of flexibility and depth in LB corps

So far Bentley is playing both ILB and OLB. Collins has played both on the line and off. SImon has been used as a big edge-setting OLB, and more interestingly, as a 3-4 DE.
It looks like Calhoun/Wise are going to alternate being active depending on whether the opponent is a pass heavy team (Calhoun) or a run heavy team (Wise who played 3-4 RDE a bunch vs the Jets)

Shank and the Globe (owned by John Henry) continue going after Kraft: “My head will explode if I read one more planted account about how Bob Kraft knew nothing about Antonio Brown’s baggage. On game day in Miami, it was reported that if Kraft had known about the pending civil lawsuit, he never would have allowed AB on the Patriots roster (and yet Kraft watched him play in the game). This week, we had the whopper report that Bill Belichick acted alone, bringing AB to New England without even informing his owner. Please. As if Belichick could agree to a… Read more »

Two thoughts. First: The Globe is playing the same clickbait strategy of selling advertising by winding up Patriots fans. Second: It’s to the Patriots benefit, for Kraft, Belichick and the corporate crew to not know anything specific about Brown’s civil difficulties. Eventually, they’ll have a union grievance over the $9 million withheld signing bonus. They’ll have to discuss that “yeah, we knew about the frozen feet, the Oakland antics,” but that was just clownish behavior we could work with.” the new allegations combined with continued text threats against a women, was enough to void that portion of his contract.

There’s no point in having the ability to challenge pass interference if the refs are never going to acknowledge they F’ed up.

Kerthwap
Member

It’s like there are two rules for PI now. What can be called initially, and what can be overturned on review. They should just acknowledge that there are two different standards, or outright state that it has to be flagrant to be overturned.

It’s a bad look to have two standards… but it’s also a bad look to have every single slight bump called a PI on every haily mary at the end of the game and deciding games on ticky tack PI calls.

Aaron Rodgers made an ill-advised decision when he targeted Marquez Valdes-Scantling on THIS game-ending interception.

At the time of throw, MVS had the lowest completion probability (37.3%) and highest INT probability (21.5%) of any Packers eligible receiver on the play.

TNF was apparently a coaches competition to see who could do the most stupid thing for no obvious reason. I was cursing the next five generations of Pederson’s progeny after he decided to go for 2 (and before it didn’t work). WTF? He deserved to lose for that until………

Lafleur decided to formally announce he had graduated from the Darrell Bevell School of Aggressive Airyness.

You play to win the game. Making it a two score game significantly increases your win chances while the PAT doesn’t make a huge difference. I certainly won’t go and say kicking the PAT is dumb but going for it made a ton of sense

The play call didn’t though

Neil X

Making it a two score game in the 3rd quarter when you are playing against Aaron Rodgers is totally irrelevant. It should not be a consideration at that point of the game.

That logic also holds true for the XP

BoSoxJim

However, the success rate of 2 point conversions doesn’t make that the correct play all the time.

BoSoxJim

Otherwise, no team would ever kick an extra point again. They’d just go for 2 every time. I remember the Steelers tried that once and didn’t make any of their conversion attempts.

Kind of like the Redskins vs. the Bears.

memokerobi
Member

Yes but in this case one made it a two possession game while the other didn’t. I know the counter argument is that the Packers would need a two point conversion to tie if you make the XP but I’m just saying that is worth risking to make it a 2 poss game

BoSoxJim

There is too much variance to just blindly follow the math.

I would like to see the difference in the theoretical (which is what some of these coaches are basing their decisions on) and compare it to the actual results.

memokerobi

I think it makes sense football wise too. I think a coach would prefer having a TD + another possession separating them from the other team score wise rather than a TD + a conversion, and if the risk is only losing an opportunity to defend a 2 pt conversion to stay ahead, its worth it imo. But I can definitely roll with the XP option. I just don’t think it was a dumb decision. Anyways, good discussion either way 🙂 And one of the biggest things I learned from Eric at PFF is that the lack of data for… Read more »
