Preseason Y Factors 2019: Patriots at Lions

-by DNOMN8R314

It’s technically football season, as the Patriots travel to Detroit to battle the Lions in their first preseason game of 2019. (And also in joint practices.) Through training camp, we’ve kept an eye on positional battles, undrafted rookies, those weird jersey numbers — okay, maybe that one is just me — and as a whole been thrilled that the Patriots are back on the gridiron.

With August football opening for the team this Thursday, we fans will have a lot to watch as we wonder, anticipate, and predict who will stick on the team come September and what the new season of Patriots-brand football will look like. Here, then, are a few areas to keep a close eye on when the Pats take the Ford Field turf.

Down on the corner, out in the street: With all six of the cornerbacks on New England’s Super Bowl LIII-winning roster returning, Bill Belichick naturally added three rookies to the group, drafting Joejuan Williams in the second round, selecting Ken Webster in the seventh, and signing D’Angelo Ross as a free agent. Webster is on PUP, but Williams will look to show his worthiness of the Day 2 selection, while Ross has made plays in recent practices. Of non-rookies, second-year Patriots Duke Dawson Jr. and Keion Crossen are among those competing to stick around after cuts. For yet another year, the cornerback battle will be one to watch closely during preseason games.

Meyers down below: Jakobi Meyers has become the odds-on favorite in the 2019 Patriots UDFA watch, taking snaps with the first-team offense and developing a rapport with Tom Brady. With first-rounder N’Keal Harry injuring his hamstring, Meyers will have plenty of opportunities to continue his push for not only a roster spot but regular (or semi-regular) time on offense. He’s begun to create separation from fellow UDFAs Ryan Davis and Gunner Olszewski on the depth chart; we’ll get a sense on where he stands depending on which offense he plays with during the preseason.

Block and tackles: Behind Marcus Cannon and the recovering Isaiah Wynn, the Patriots lack tackle depth. Third-rounder Yodny Cajuste remains on PUP, and while Dan Skipper and Cedrick Lang have taken a significant share of camp reps, neither has stood out positively. At this point, left guard Joe Thuney is the immediate backup at left tackle if Wynn misses significant time, a possibility no one is looking forward to given Wynn’s year-long recovery. The team’s first preseason games will be our first chance to see how Skipper, Lang, and the rest of the tackle depth chart can handle opposing defensive linemen in game situations – and see who has the best chance to stick around.

Shilique, rattle, & roll: While our eyes locked onto rookie Chase Winovich and make-or-break Derek Rivers as the defensive ends to watch in camp, ex-Raider Shilique Calhoun has made impressive plays in late practices. Calhoun has inserted himself into the roster conversation, and with Michael Bennett, Deatrich Wise Jr., John Simon, and Winovich expected to claim spots on the 53, there may be only one spot left for the group behind them. Meanwhile, Rivers has also played well this camp, so this roster battle will also be one to eye.

Sacrifice punt: The punter battle between Ryan Allen and Jake Bailey appears to be following a different track than last year’s between Allen and Corey Bojorquez. Despite their seemingly-close standing on the depth chart, Bojorquez never punted in the preseason and was released (though he did end up claimed by the Bills). From reports, Bailey appears to be in a bit better position than Bojorquez, suggesting he will at least get game opportunities; additionally, Bailey was a fifth-round pick while Bojorquez was undrafted, and teams who draft special teamers expect them to make the roster. Of course, we won’t know if Bailey beats out Allen until final cuts, until which we watch and enjoy football.

As NFL and NFLPA enter negotiations on a new CBA, and as the unchecked power of commissioner likely serves as topic of debate, Roger Goodell uses his discretion to be forgiving of Josh Gordon. The more reasonable Goodell seems, the more persuasively NFL can defend his discretion.

That explains it.

That’s part of it, another big part is that NFL had been alienating black viewership which has been steadily declining. Getting JayZ and potentially relaxing their early intractable stance on marijuana is a start to get the black viewership up. This marijuana issue is opening up a new realization about the pain management problems that everyone faces today.

I don’t know why, but I’ve been arguing with a guy on Twitter about Gordon. He says that Gordon won’t make the 53-man because BB doesn’t trust him and won’t cut another WR to make room for him. I told him if that were the case then BB wouldn’t have signed him to a contract while he was indefinitely suspended (just to cut him after he got re-instated). He would have just thanked him for his service and wished him well. Then he said that after cutting him he could bring him back after week 1 (to save money and… Read more »

If he can’t make the roster this year I doubt Belichick will try to hold on to him.

It is possible that he might move one of the veterans like Harris to PUP to give Berrios a shot however.

I think he would have to be moved to IR. Unless they changed it (or I misremembered), I believe you have to start TC on PUP in order to start the season on PUP.

You don’t have to designate which players are returning from IR anymore. And I think you can pull up to 3 payers off of IR in one season.

Josh McCown, who announced his retirement this summer to spend more time with family, is returning to play his 17th NFL season with the Eagles, per sources.

McCown is signing a 1-year deal with the but plans to resume his broadcasting career with ESPN after season, per source.

7-1 to start the season
Offense should be much better than last year
Defense should be top 5 in the league as long as they continue to pressure qb like last year
They still need to figure out how to stop KC offense

It will be interesting to see how the offense evolves this year with bigger bodied receivers than we’ve traditionally had coupled with what I would assume will be a continued emphasis on the run game like last year.

We might actually see a more explosive big play passing game rather than the west coast YAC attack.

Kerthwap

I like the idea of Brady having diverse weapons. Won’t need to force anything, he can take what the defense gives, audible at the line. Different strengths against different teams.

BoSoxJim
Member

I think you are going to have to get used to Brady “forcing it” to Gordon and Harry (and probably Meyers) at times. Even if it appears they aren’t open, their ability to make contested catches will be enough for Brady to give them the opportunities he wouldn’t give other receivers.

Kerthwap

If it’s at least close enough to stretch the defense, and open up the run game/middle it will be worth it.

Having Gordon back makes the running game much more potent. Only wr with a proven track record to out physical people to make catches. Short slants when the linebackers mistakenly run up to stop the run means lots of space. Harry might be able to do the same someday as they are similar but Gordon can do it already

MrLucky

I thought Harry looked huge on the field last week and it’s crazy that Gordon is even bigger. I don’t think Harry has the same burst or straight line speed as JG but neither one is gonna be fun for smaller DB’s to try and tackle in space. All of a sudden I’m loving this WR group, just need Gordon to stay clean.

So only black people smoke weed or drink alcohol to self medicate from problems? Don’t think you were trying to sound racist but that statement has the tone of a typical leftist who thinks black people are somehow idiots that need people to make excuses for them Time the NFL to just get rid of testing for cannabis. Time for white people to stop treating black people like they are special cases. Time for people to realize that every race self medicates. Its “human” nature to run from problems because facing them can be quite scary but problems whether emotional… Read more »

In recent years those garbage reasons have been spotlighted, and addressed. Even the NFL has figured out the social trending towards profiting from weed, to the cry to stop the disparate treatment of young black men. The NFL has eased up on the… Read more »

The above is a bit of a mess, I posted before fixing things, but no one refreshes, so I’m not going to edit it. It comes down to playing Goodell’s game. The Patriots and Gordon have already sucked up to the NFL, playing the “Oh yes, Thank you Roger for the suspension, so I can get my devils lettuce addiction under control, I don’t know how I could have managed to get my life under control without your guidance!” Gordon could have easily have said “Yeah, society and the NFL are taking money out of my pocket because my intoxicant… Read more »

The word marihuana/marijuana itself is actually racist. There was a lot of weed specific garbage that was used as dog whistles against various brown people. As for myth… I think we’ll have to agree to disagree with your interpretation of history. There were a whole lot of factors involved, including the ones you’ve mentioned. None of which preclude racism/xenophobia as one factor.

This forum isn’t really the proper place to be discussing this. If nothing else the tiny text boxes don’t allow for a whole lot of clarity.

This convo reminds me of these past weeks. Hubby tends to be a hoarder. He has so much paperwork from decades ago. Most of it unimportant. Like paystubs from ’87. (Really???). In light of his surgery, we had to go through all of it so I would know where everything is. He has a life insurance policy, but we couldn’t find it, of course. Thankfully we are also in the process of gutting our attic, so we found it in an old trunk that we needed to bring downstairs. I mean – I need to have all of this crap!

Fast networks and social media are electronic and non sentient entities. Control over both still lies in human hands. And when the leader of the most influential country in the world is left to spew his filth unfettered, and his executive orders carry out a Nazi’s wet dream, that’s not on social media. It’s a breakdown of the checks and balances of the government.

Networks and social media are tools, like hammers, nail guns, semi-automatic weapons and hydrogen bombs are tools. Some tools, by there very nature are prone to be used for purposes that are contrary to the public good.

Trump would not have been elected president in an era that did not have the internet and social media. Those technologies enabled his reign.

I’ve been thinking of trying online banking because they say iID theft might actually be more likely offline (if they go through your mail). But haven’t pulled the trigger and started an account yet.

As long as you don’t do both! My wonderful husband made two payments of 400 Bucks last month. One online, and he wrote a check. Same payment. Made twice. Then we went into overdraft and he wondered why.

NS, this is the reason I still mail checks. Legally speaking, electronic transactions still, as we aproach 2020, do not have the same legal standing as paper receipts. In some states, laws have been passed that make an electronic receipt equivalent, but many jurisdictions have not done so. Checks a far more persuasive evidence to a jury, and the law reinforces that bias.

I like paper checks. There’s a psychological component to writing a check to pay a bill. Feels like more of an accomplishment than clicking a couple of buttons on a web page.

No one bothers with old school dumpster diving for identity theft now. Why dirty your hands over one person when you can buy one of tens of millions of legit credentials from online thefts of places like Capital One and Equifax? Anyone with the brains to figure out how to use a Tor browser and the required lack of ethics is instantly in business.

Interesting week- another neighbor passed away- had to make the funeral arrangements per her request. Luckily she had given me all her jewelry, valuables and the Oscar to hold at my house until the will was read- good thing- her son was there 3 hours after she died ransacking the house- had to call the police and have him “escorted” out. He’s going to get quite a surprise when the will is read- she left quite a lot to my daughters- who she used to babysit- and some to her favorite charities- he gets the procedes from the sale of… Read more »

The Oscar? What did she get it for? People like that son make me sick. Our over-the-fence 90 some year old neighbors were evidently moved into a nursing home a month ago (she had dementia and he fell and got hurt, so it had to happen). They had 8 kids and only two ever visited. Until now. NOW the whole herd went through the house, picking through it. What they kept, I don’t know. They did fill three dumpsters with their parents’ belongings. Kinda sad to think that your kids care so little that they throw everything you ever owned… Read more »

Disposing of the belongings of dead parents is a significant emotional burden. We had way more than a dumpster worth of stuff that was just not usable for anyone. My brother, sister and I have keepsakes of theirs in pretty much every room in our houses. But so much stuff needed to just go.

I know. When my mom died, I was spared that task. Our daughter lives in the house and only got rid of some of the furniture. She kept all the china, silverware, books, etc. My mom was a minimalist, so there wasn’t a lot of junk. But I told my daughter that she was not to get rid of anything without asking for my permission first.

I wish I had a few more items from the house I grew up in, but I was a postdoc during the time my parents were dying and we had a new apartment every year or two. But I’m looking at a lamp and wooden table from then that are nearly 100 years old. So we did what we could.

The house that I grew up in was built just post WW2, and was demolished soon after my family sold it in the 1990s. She had painted murals in the basement, about 4 foot high and 15-16 feet wide. One was of a mill/watherwheel along a babbling brook, and the other was a rural hilly scene. She was such a sweet woman, it was great to sit down there and look at her murals. But she just was not a great artist.

That the house is gone is mostly the tragedy of late 20th century construction techniques. I currently live in a house that was built in 1910. It’s a 110 years old now, and there is little doubt that it will still be around for its 200th anniversary in 2110. There are very few buildings built between 1945 and 2000 that will still be standing in 2110.

This is true! Our house was built in 1890. Drafty as hell. We’re in the process of gutting the attic. (plaster and lath and 2×6 rafters!) but I trust it to outlast me.

I took all of my mom’s jewelry even before she died. Her dementia made her give away the store to strangers. There is also an ivory chess set that my stepfather brought over from Nigeria when he was there for a job. Sadly, I am not allowed to bring that to the US. The china is exquisite and my daughter wants to keep it, so I’m good with that. Some books are rare and aren’t in print anymore, so I want those….. And then all the stuff that is worth nothing but is priceless to me…Memories, you know.

I know- it’s difficult. I already told my girls that when Grammie goes you better come and bring a U-Haul with you- take what you want. Her husband got the Oscar for sound engineering- the fool of a son doesn’t know that you can’t sell Oscars- thought he was to make a bundle. There is some very expensive jewelry- Van Cleef, Tiffany etc.- we’ll probably keep it for our girls. They were such a sweet couple- so kind. Up until last year daughter #2 and hubby would go and put up her Christmas tree for her- the son never even came to visit her.

They are more likely to keep an extra WR than RB. The running game may not be as efficient as it was last year without Gronk and Allen. Also we have to see how Wynn handles run blocking.

Also, Gordon hopefully will last through the SB, but they have to make plans in case he slips again.
