Each UDFA’s Path to a Roster Spot

-by DNOMN8R314

With training camp less than two weeks away, fans will have their first opportunity to see the newest Patriots on the field before 90 trims to 53. Ten of that group joined the team signed after the NFL Draft’s conclusion as unselected rookies, perhaps the easiest way for a hopeful professional football player to start their career with a sizable chip on the shoulder. For each of New England’s 10 UDFAs, that push towards remaining on the roster past August will require more than just performing at his best, but excelling in the role that will keep him in Foxboro.

Ordered by position, here is my opinion of what each undrafted rookie needs to do in order to make the team this fall. (I am exclusing “special teams” from my conclusions, except in certain cases, because Bill Belichick is the coach and it is already established how much he values special teams contributions.)

Nick Brossette, RB
role: short-yardage back

Brossette has one of the hardest paths to a spot on the 53, as the roster chances of each of the five players ahead of him on the depth chart range from very good to practically certain. With Sony Michel and Damien Harris projected as the main ball carriers, James White the veteran pass-catching back, Rex Burkhead a player who can fill in at every role, and re-signed Brandon Bolden expected to reclaim his key special teams role, Brossette has a particularly arduous challenge in aiming to make the team. Neither the fastest nor most athletic running back, the former LSU Tiger’s skill set lies in griding out yards and pushing through contact. As Michel had success in short-yardage situations last year, particularly towards the end of the seaosn, and Harris’ 215-pound frame makes him an ideal back with minimal yards to go, Brossette will have to make himself stand out against two early draft picks if he wants to stick around.

Ryan Davis, WR
Jakobi Meyers, WR
Gunner Olszewski, WR
role: slot receiver, returner

Of the three New England undrafted wideouts, Davis and Meyers were widely-covered prospects, the one catching passes from Patriots’ fourth-rounder Jarrett Stidham at Auburn, the other from Bengals’ fourth-rounder Ryan Finley at NC State; meanwhile, Olszewski is just converting to the position after playing cornerback at Bemidji State. However, all three UDFAs are competing for the same job on offense, as Davis and Meyers saw most of their collegiate production come from the slot. While Davis and Olszewski both have the traditional build and athleticism to play slot receiver, and both are in the competition to earn a returning role on special teams, the six-foot-two Meyers presents a larger target at that particular position. In their aim to crack a wide receiver group with unclear depth behind Julian Edelman and N’Keal Harry, their direct competition is second-year slot man and returner Braxton Berrios, who stepped up during OTAs and is receiving laud for some of the same skills that made him a sixth-round draft pick last year; however, much is still to be seen during the summer.

Andrew Beck, TE
role: blocking tight end

In recent season, Belichick has always preferred his second tight end be able to block first, catch passes second. Dwayne Allen filled this well for two seasons before his release this offseason, and Rob Gronkowski’s departure has left a significant void. With Benjamin Watson suspended for four weeks, Matt LaCosse is on track to be the first tight end on the field come games counting, leaving Beck, Ryan Izzo, and Stephen Anderson hunting for spots behind him. Anderson’s primary talent is as a receiver, suggesting Beck and Izzo are in more direct competition. While Izzo might have an edge when targeted, both are strong blockers, and with the tight end battle under heavy spotlight, Beck will certainly be a key UDFA to watch.

Tyler Gauthier, C
Tyree St. Louis, T
role: reserve offensive lineman, swing tackle

Obviously the second role applies only to St. Louis, but both Miami products will be in a battle to earn a roster spot. While St. Louis started at both left and right tackle with the Hurricanes, his play was inconsistent and he was not projected to be drafted, though he will now be receiving tutelage from Dante Scarnecchia. In contrast, Gauthier lacks positional versatility, but his play seemed a bit more consistent on tape (I could not find a scouting report for Gauthier online). The depth chart is a little tougher to crack on the inside of the line than the outside, as Ted Karras and Hjalte Froholdt, both of whom have experience at center, look to back up the Patriots’ starting interior linemen, while at tackle, the only certain depth is third-rounder Yodny Cajuste, who is injured.

Terez Hall, LB
role: physical downhill LB

As you may have guessed by the role I’m seeing for him, Hall’s best production in college came when using his athleticism to attack offenses moving downhill. Despite that athleticism, he had minimal production in coverage, suggesting his being in competition with Elandon Roberts, who like Hall is undersized for the position and moves best when attacking forward. The Patriots’ top four linebackers appear to be penned in, with Dont’a Hightower and Kyle Van Noy returning as starters, Jamie Collins lighting up the practice field in his return to Foxboro, and Ja’Whaun Bentley coming off injury but having started as a rookie last season, meaning there are not many spots up for grabs.

D’Angelo Ross, CB
role: slot corner?

Ross gets a question mark because I could find only highlights (no pure film) of his play, nor could I find any scouting report. He gets pencilled in as a slot options for two reasons: the Patriots have regularly looked to improve on defensive production in the slot, despite the improvement of Jonathan Jones, and Ross is five feet, eight inches tall. Despite his limited height, Ross started for New Mexico for two years and put up a 39-inch vertical leap at the Lobos’ pro day, so having not seen him on the Gillette practice fields, he may be getting reps outside the hashmarks for all I know. And while the Patriots’ cornerback depth chart is deep, especially after investing second-round picks in Duke Dawson Jr. and Joejuan Williams in the past two drafts, the team has hit on a string of undrafted cornerbacks in recent years, from Malcolm Butler through Cre’Von LeBlanc and Kenny Moore to Jonathan Jones and J.C. Jackson. If for that reason alone, Ross should not be automatically crossed out.

Malik Gant, S
role: box safety heir

A key to New England’s success on defense in the last few seasons has been Patrick Chung’s versatility, from moving into the box so Devin McCourty and Duron Harmon can patrol deep to covering opposing tight ends down the seam. As Chung will be 32 at the start of the 2019 season, the Patriots would be wise to look for his heir at the position. Though the team signed former Raiders second-rounder Obi Melifonwu during 2018, Gant will be similarly competing for a job at strong safety. While Melifonwu played cornerback in Oakland and thrived at UConn off his athleticism, Gant is more in the mold of a box safety, not as athletic but a solid, punishing tackler who can disrupt the run and remain physical in coverage. With minimal depth at strong safety, Gant has perhaps the clearest path to a roster spot of any 2019 UDFA – though he’ll have to compete his way down it.

Who the hell are they going to get to upgrade WR and TE at this point? You have a chance to significantly upgrade LT. If they can make it work, it’s a no-brainer.

McGinnest was interviewing BB for the NFLN, and teed up a question by accidentally mis-stating, “you think your D is one of the best you’ve ever had” to which BB responded by correcting him – “well we have a long way to go, starting from zero, lots of improvement needed, etc”

Last night on NBC Sports Boston, Tom E Curran – the little prick, played only the McGinnest question but not BB’s answer, then said “BB stated to Willie that the Pats have one of their best defenses ever this season”

at this point, if they’re not going to trade away a starting DB for a good return (which I don’t think they will), I’d just cut Dawson and hope he clears waivers and get him on the PS. The 2nd round draft status is water under the bridge at this point.

The Pats don’t have to make a decision this early in the season. It is about 5 days into camp when the have mostly practiced in shorts and tee’s. Dawson was hurt most of last year. Why are you judging on last year alone? Let them play in out..

HunterCenter

Well, White is never going to be a RB that you want running between the tackles at the GL/short yd unless it is from a passing set.

But yes, the more diverse your backs are, the less predictable you are. And the better you are able to handle injuries without having to change your approach on offense.

26. New England Patriots

No matter who the Patriots employ from the outside, they always seem to make it work. A corps made up of former castoffs Phillip Dorsett, Cordarelle Patterson and Josh Gordon complemented Julian Edelman nicely in 2018, as each hauled in at least three touchdowns and graded in the 67.0-73.5 range. But the latter two are out of the picture (at least for now with Gordon). Now rookie N’Keal Harry, who notched the fourth-highest receiving grade among draft-eligible wideouts (87.8) a season ago, is expected to take on a key role out of the gate.

I think they keep Anderson and go with 2 till Watson returns, he may not be good at blocking but this is his second year in the system and from all I’m hearing is doing well and ahead of both Izzo and Beck. I rather they find ways to compensate for the blocking than lose a pass CATCHING TE, if Matt goes down you have no weapon till Watson returns and Watson is not young so I rather they have a TE that can be a threat in the passing game. And is Matt really better than Anderson so far… Read more »

I can’t see any reason why they’d keep Stephen Anderson around. They have a more promising move TE in LaCosse who appears to be at the top of the depth chart. Harry is a big slot type, and Mo Harris showing up well, and he’s a big slot himself. No fit for Anderson even if he can play a bit.

hugo #FreeBoney
Member

hugo #FreeBoney

Anderson is just so small. They’re both pass-catching TEs, but beyond the fact that LaCosse is on a more promising trajectory (250 yds on 37 targets last year), at least he has the size where you can conceivably polish up his blocking. Anderson is a WR.

I’m assuming the next slew of players in will be Seymour, Vrabel, Wilfork, Mankins?, Welker, Gronk, Slater, HT, Brady, Edelman, Gostkowski.

Jim, Parcells’ working for the Jets during SB week was never a proven allegation. The story was his agent who was also the agent for the Boston Globe reporter at the time mentioned a 3 year $10M contract was in the offing. Parcells’ relationship with Kraft was already far beyond damaged. It made sense he was leaving. The fact was Favre played one of his best games that night, and the Pats ST effed up on the Howard return. Both are not really due to a lack of preparation. And regarding the drafting issues, Kraft made Bobby Grier the GM. Grier was instrumental for two outstanding drafts in 1995 and 1996, but questionable ones in 96 and 97. So while Parcells’ was instrumental in the turnaround, Grier was the person behind the outstanding 1995 draft.

After a two-year hiatus, Parcells returned to the NFL in 1993 as the head coach for the New England Patriots. Within two years, he coached the team to a 10–6 record and its first playoff game in eight years. In 1996, he led the Patriots to their first division title in 11 years, and only the second and third home playoff games in franchise history. The Patriots went all the way to Super Bowl XXXI, but lost to the Green Bay Packers, 35–21, in New Orleans. Parcells left the Patriots after disagreements with owner Robert Kraft. The Patriots waived OL Cole Croston today. They subsequently added UDFA OL Martez Ivey. They still have an open roster spot.

Pats organization was a mess when he took over, he drafted well, brought along some great coaches and made the pats relevant, it didn’t end well and I think Kraft hates him, so he won’t get in, but he’s in the real hall of Fame

He did help us, no doubt. But…

I mostly base it on, I just don’t like him based on the exit. Every coach wants moar power, so what. He also wasn’t here long enough.

Who did he draft? His main beef was that he wasn’t allowed to buy the groceries.

Parcells was not the final decision maker on personnel. It’s why he ended up wanting to leave. The final straw was when he wanted to draft a DL in the 1st round but they ended up drafting Terry Glenn.

So giving Parcells all the credit for something he didn’t have full control over isn’t right.

IIRC, Belichick helped with the draft that brought a lot of those players. I remember reading that he recommended for them to draft Milloy.

Drew Brees @PFF grade last three seasons, including playoffs,

Indoors: 93.7
Outdoors: 80.0

Matt Ryan @PFF grade last three seasons, including playoffs,

Indoors: 91.3
Outdoors: 84.7

Grades in the 80s certainly aren’t bad, but domes are an advantage. Yes, there are those who think they don’t make a difference.

Well, the Saints and Falcons are gtd. at least 9 dome games a year.

BoSoxJim

but your point about home/away dynamic is valid

bring

yeah – it was more about any qb being better at home than on the road (just in general) – i imagine dome splits are more dramatic

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent
HunterCenter

would be interesting to see their grades in an Away game in a Dome and see how that compares

MrScratch
Member
Free agent
MrScratch

I don’t know about “grades” (which aren’t actually statistical) but 90% of QB have better career passer ratings in domes than outdoors. Regardless if those games are home or away.

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent
HunterCenter

but wouldn’t you think a QB’s Home Dome career passer rating would be better than their Away Dome career passer rating?

MrScratch
Member
Free agent
MrScratch

Possibly but not by much. Pretty much the difference that a QB home outdoors vs road outdoor rating would be. For instance Tom Brady is 98.8 at home and 96.4 on the road. Not much of a difference. But he’s 109.0 in domes, 100.4 in retractable roofs and 96.9 outdoors. Now, he’s only played 14 games in domes and 8 in retractable roof settings. But you compare that to Brees who is 103.1 at home and 92.3 on the road. In domes, Brees is 104.2 where outdoors he 91.2 and that’s in a near even sample size (128 v 125).

probably not too hard for him to potentially make a Chris Hogan type of impact on this team, given how poor our WR depth is
