A Trade and an Identity Crisis (A 2016 Cold Take)

HUGO: Earlier this year, while combing through old Word documents, I found this gem from 2016: an article I wrote the day of the Jamie Collins trade, but decided not to post. Enjoy this freezing cold take!

When the Patriots sent Jamie Collins to Cleveland for a 3rd round compensatory pick, I was very disappointed, for reasons that I would not have been able to articulate. Having had a few hours to think about it, the Collins trade was disappointing at several levels.

First and foremost, it was disappointing that the Patriots felt they had no choice but to be without a key contributor for the remainder of 2016. Second, it closed the book on a period in which the team did not turn stellar 2012-2013 drafts into a foundation, to sustain their newfound defensive strength into the future.

Since the midseason acquisition of Aqib Talib in 2012, the Patriots defense has been on the rise. This rise was attributable to two factors:
1) Finding and developing a core of valuable talent in the 2012 and 2013 drafts (Dont’a Hightower, Collins, Chandler Jones, Logan Ryan, and Duron Harmon).
2) Continuous access to elite cornerback play, from the aforementioned Talib, to future Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis, to Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler.

With these ingredients added to the mix, and Devin McCourty and the reinvented Patrick Chung shifted into their best roles, the Patriots underwent a renaissance on the defensive side of the ball. They showed promise in 2013, and came into their own in 2014, playing outstanding football throughout the playoffs. And while the Patriots lost the 2015 title game, it was there at Mile High where the defense arguably played their finest game together. With a free safety to play centerfield, a corner to handle complex assignments, and two linebackers that could rampage downhill or drop into coverage – all of a sudden, with Tom Brady on the sideline, the Patriots could still impose their will upon opponents.

With every one of the prime-age players (McCourty, Collins, Hightower, Jones, Chung, Ryan, Harmon) eligible for free agency after the 2014-2016 offseasons, it has been no secret that the Patriots would have to make difficult decisions, and identify a roadmap with which to sustain their defensive renaissance going forward.

After the 2015 season, the Patriots hinted at what their choice would be. Bill Belichick traded away homegrown playmaker Jones, a classic 4-3 defensive end, and released Dominique Easley, the team’s comparatively inconsequential 4-3 rush tackle. Meanwhile, he signed Shea McClellin, an unproductive 3-4 linebacker whose selling point was the potential to complement blitzing linebackers by both covering and rushing, and traded for Barkevious Mingo, a 3-4 edge defender who failed to meet expectations in Cleveland.

However, the Patriots failed to match a 2 year, $10M offer for defensive tackle Akiem Hicks, the best 3-4 defensive lineman on the roster and the closest thing they’d had to a three-down lineman in several years, preferring to sign another yet 4-3 rush end in Chris Long. And of course, they ultimately traded their starlet playmaking 3-4 outside linebacker to Cleveland for a compensatory 3rd round pick – a pick in the part of the draft that, barring unprecedented FA splashes, an unaffordable Collins would yield anyway.

Whether the decision to pursue flexibility on the defensive side of the ball was a good one or a bad one, a choice or a necessity, the Patriots have taken a step back. However, they remain several steps ahead of where they started at the end of 2011. All-world cornerback Butler (and a looming contractual battle), strong veterans McCourty and Chung, and unproven rush end Trey Flowers highlight the Patriots defense under contract. If it’s any comfort, the 2016 Patriots have access to youth and pedigree (Malcom Brown, Eric Rowe, Cyrus Jones, Vincent Valentine, Kyle Van Noy, pending UFAs Hightower, Ryan, and Harmon) that the 2011 team did not.

Bill Belichick is often admired by football fans for “building a team, not collecting talent.” However, in the eyes of this observer, the Jamie Collins trade represents the failure of the Patriots to transition from talent collecting to team building.

When the time/opportunity came to capitalize on the momentum build in the 2012-2013 drafts, abstract the team’s burgeoning defense into key roles and expendable roles, and supplement the scheme with specific role players, the team instead opted, or had no choice but, to go for the reset button and continue collecting talent.

I’ve seen a couple of systems that had him pretty high. The intriguing thing is that even though he played 3 years at UT he’s only 20 years-old.

What the Eff kinda draft was THAT by the Celtics???!!!! They draft one of the best defensive players (which they sorely need) and trade him to Philly?????? And then kept trading down??? Sorry Danny, this is not the NFL and you are not BB. Oh, and then trade Baynes??????/

Thybulle is a very limited offensive player. I don’t see how he’d get many minutes over Smart, Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Langford. Basically, he’d be competing with Semi Ojeyle for that specialist stopper role.

The Celtics picked up #33 and got a very intriguing player in Carsen Edwards. They added a 2020 1st and they also dump the cap slot of that extra 1st and Baynes which now gives them almost $26M in cap space.

At this point he might as well just go the Kellerman and Rob Parker route. His credibility is ruined. Obviously just trying to be a ‘hot take’ guy for clicks and can’t be taken seriously. At some point these buffoons are bound to be right after a decade or so of looking like idiots, at which point they’ll say “see, I told you so.”

Kuzma as 6th man

Then you’re talking about guys coming off injury or bad years. You don’t turn down bigger money to hope to get bigger money. These are late 20’s/ early 30’s players. This could be their last payday. A one year deal that coincides with an injury or bad season turns into another one year deal. It’s hard to pick and choose particular mid-market guys. You really have to wait to see what the market is and who slips through the cracks. Especially if you’re looking at an average of less tham $*m per and the MLE (non tax payer) is $9.2M

Jordan has always been monstrously overrated.
He’s one of the poster boys for the difference between individual rebounding and team rebounding. He gets 10 rebounds a game yet his teams are no worse at rebounding without him.
And he’s never been a great defender either if you look at the actual numbers.

Langford’s strengths and weaknesses, according to Mike Schmitz…..
STRENGTHS: Physical profile, shot creation, defensive potential, upside
WEAKNESSES: Off-ball value, shooting consistency, decision making, off-hand, relaxed defender
So he’d fit right in on last year’s lazy team

I’m just down on the team right Enash. Horford gone. Now Baynes gone. Beyond Horford’s elite play, that’s 2 of maybe 3 players who actually gave a damn on last year’s team. We have a culture problem and we’re bringing a bunch of rookies into it.

EnashWaca

yeah, they have to pivot now and go in a different direction. At least they have two recent #3 overall picks to do it with. It’s going to be rough at times with that many young players on the team. But Brad seems to relish the challenge of working with young players so maybe that’s more in his wheelhouse. Will be interesting at any rate

MrScratch

Yeah, but how much of that was Kyrie? There was no culture problem at the end of 2018. It was a hard working team that ran to game 7 with a lot of young players and missing two of their “top paid” talents.

Yeah, in terms of actual results, Al was our best player.
If the Jays are our core moving forward, it makes sense that we’d let him go (and that he’d want to go). But the product could get a lot uglier, fast, without him giving us structure at both ends.

Most of those weaknesses are exactly what you expect from 18-19 year-olds.

If it’s based on last season, I’d say that’s about right.

Anyhow, who cares? We root for the Pats – it’s a team sport. As long as they are the best team at the end of the season – that’s all that matters. Individual player rankings/awards, they can shove up their ass. The Pats always add up to more than the sum of their parts.

They actually got Milwaukee’s 2020 1st rounder, but they really did this to (1) reduce the number of 1st rounders they draft this year and have to give guaranteed contracts to (2) open up cap space by trading Baynes – they now have room for a max deal

It’s really Thybulle or Jerome and Baynes for #33 and Milwaukee’s 2020 1st.

Gonna miss Aaron Baynes. He wasn’t an All-Star, but he did the dirty work other players wouldn’t.

Interesting section on Grant Williams in linked article below – the author predicted he would be surprise player of draft

i like it. PJ Tucker/medium-fat Boris Diaw potential. Gets to and shoots well from the line and strong as heck

There are a pretty big group of “swing for fences” guys sitting right here.

Is it my lack of perception, or does no one want to deal with Danny?

Celtics pick will be one of the best in the draft. 76ers will trade Thybulle in 2 years for a late 2nd rounder.

Which at 20 onwards is a very reasonable estimation. The guy the Sixers took seems like a safe pick though, has a skill to hang his hat on.
