Roster Chances for the Patriots’ 2019 Sophomore Class

-by DNOMN8R314

As the Patriots have added 20 rookies to their 90-man roster, we fans have examined, dissected, and prognosticated which of the newest young Foxboro footballers (not futbolers) have strong or weak chances of sticking on the team past August. But the team goes through this process every season, and with our excitement towards the newest players, it’s easy to forget those who joined the team just a year ago.

The Patriots’ entire nine-man 2018 draft class remains on their summer roster a year later, as do a handful of the UDFAs signed alongside those draftees. Here’s a quick recap of the Patriots who will be stepping on the Gillette practice fields for their second season of football – some for the second consecutive summer – and my opinion of their chances at sticking around.

Draft Picks

Isaiah Wynn, T, #76
The 23rd overall selection, Wynn has played tackle exclusively during his tenure, and competed with Trent Brown last year for the left tackle spot before a torn ACL cost him his rookie year. With no veteran starter or swing tackle on the roster, Wynn is in line to start on Tom Brady’s blind side, but he has yet to take the practice field.

Sony Michel, RB, #26
Most if not all of us were surprised when Bill Belichick selected a running back near the end of the first round, but Michel went on to claim the lead role in New England’s backfield and rush for six touchdowns in three postseason games. Should he remain healthy, that job is his.

Duke Dawson Jr., CB/S, #29
One of the Patriots’ two injured reserve returnees last year, Dawson was never able to crack the active roster after his return. He’ll once again be competing with a crowded cornerback class – one with even more competition with the second-round selection of Joejuan Williams – but if he can add versatility at safety to his repertoire, it should help him stick around. His second-round pedigree from a year ago may help, but at this point that status will probably not guarantee anything.

Ja’Whaun Bentley, LB, #51
“Of course Belichick takes a big linebacker,” we thought in disgust, only for Bentley to come out of nowhere (okay, Purdue) and land a starting job to begin the season. A Week 3 torn bicep cut his season off early, but Bentley is still expected to have a considerable role on this team, competing with Jamie Collins Sr. for the third starting job.

Christian Sam, LB, #44
The linebacker of the type we expected Belichick to draft earlier, smaller and athletic, Sam caught the Foxboro Flu and spent last year on injured reserve. He never stood out in OTAs and will need a strong camp to make the squad, even with only a couple additions to the LB corps. (Of course, one of those additions is Collins.)

Braxton Berrios, WR, #14
Last year’s small white slot guy(R)(TM)(DUH) ended up on injured reserve for the entire campaign, battling injury throughout camp. The wideout depth chart resembles a game of three-card monte, with names shuffling upwards, downwards, and in and out, but Berrios reportedly looked all right in OTAs. I’d neither say he’s got a good chance nor zero chance at making the team, as there’s still plenty of time at this open position.

Danny Etling, QB, #5
The man responsible for the Bootleg Heard ‘Round the Internet has been demoted to fourth string with the arrival of Jarrett Stidham. He’s taken on other roles including punt protector in an attempt to prove himself NFL-worthy, but as model a teammate and hard a worker he’s been, it doesn’t look as if it will be with this team.

Keion Crossen, CB, #35
Crossen made the team last year thanks to extreme athleticism in spite of his raw positional instincts, instincts which were notably exploited by Tyreek Hill in the AFC Championship Game. This spring, the Patriots used a late seventh-round pick on Ken Webster – an extremely athletic cornerback with raw positional instincts. I’d consider Crossen and Webster in direct competition, with again it being too early to determine who has an edge.

Ryan Izzo, TE, #85
Izzo also very briefly made the team, but was placed on IR and missed the season. With the thin tight end depth chart (especially with the Michael Roberts trade falling through), Izzo has as good a chance at a roster spot as anyone, but if his play isn’t up to it, Bill Belichick won’t hesitate to keep fewer tight ends (see: 2011).

UDFAs and Others

(NOTE: I am only including players here who spent at least part of last season in New England – mostly meaning practice squad players – even if they didn’t enter the league as Patriots, and only those who entered the league in 2018.)

J.C. Jackson, CB, #27
The jewel of last year’s UDFA class, Jackson not only made the team but developed into a gameplan-specific starter during the second half of the year, intercepting three passes his first season and earning a Super Bowl ring. Though the cornerback room becoming crowded again, it’s unlikely Jackson finds himself on the outside – but he’ll undoubtedly be motivated to compete as if he has to earn that roster spot all over again. (Which, since this is Foxboro, he does.)

Trent Harris, DE, #45
Harris had a good preseason, totaling 2.5 sacks and forcing a fumble, and spent his entire 2018 on the practice squad. His knocks have always been his undersized frame and one-dimensional play, but he’s pretty darn good at that one dimension – pass rush. If Harris can develop as a run defender, he might be able to crack the roster, as the DE group is also uncertain beyond the top handful of players; otherwise, another stint on the PS seems likely.

A.J. Howard, S, #39
Howard joined the Patriots’ practice squad just before their playoff run and got a Super Bowl ring out of the deal. Like Harris, Howard is part of a position group that has a lot of unknowns after the top group, any one of whom could separate himself from the pack and make it past the summer, just like the Democratic presidential candidates. The question of course is whether he will do so in camp.

Damoun Patterson, WR, #17
Like Berrios, Patterson is one of many in an uncertain group of wide receivers. Patterson had a very good camp for the Steelers in 2018 but didn’t make the final cut, and after a short tenure on Tampa Bay’s PS he ended up on New England’s, where he spent the rest of the year. If he can improve on his 2018 August, it will be hard to get rid of him, but if not, he may end up back where he ended last year. And he has that number to deal with as well.

Mocks have Tyler Herro going to Cs at 14. I like Jaxson Hayes, but can’t see him being available there, so might as well take a bomber (he hit 80 out of 100 three pointers in workout for Cs)

I’m not a lawyer but I believe he’s wrong:

Unless you’re saying Curtatone’s lawsuit is a civil one and he’s not allowed to bring criminal charges? I have no idea….and frankly don’t care.

I’m not saying i’m sure Caserio wants to get out, bu i think there is some truth on this.

“If Caserio wanted to stay in New England, he would have just turned down the Texans’ overtures. Instead, the Patriots had to lawyer up to enforce Caserio’s contract.”

Considering Caserio had turned down the Texans in 2014, he could’ve felt the smarter move is for the Pats to block this now, because you don’t want to be the guy who turned down an NFL team twice. That’s bad optics.

The draft haul New Orleans got in this simply incredible: #4, a 2021 1st that is contingent on being top 8 or rolls into an unprotected 2022, unprotected 2024, and pick swaps in 2023/25. And New Orleans has no motivation to move back the deal execution because: 1) all the Lakers have left to give them is Kuzma who they refused to part with 2) New Orleans will want their player at the summer league 3) This structure gives the player the ability to demand the 120% cap slot since the deal can’t get done until 30 days after he… Read more »

Irving made $20m – the team was $15m over the cap – so him leaving puts them $5m under before extending anyone – not much you can do with that

MrScratch
Member
Free agent
MrScratch

They’ll be over the cap unless they were to not extend qualifying offers to Rozier, Wanamaker, Theis and Gibson. Then released Ojeyle and renounced Morris. With the cap slots for the draft picks added back that would pretty much put them $2-3M under the projected cap. Of course, that’s exactly where you don’t want to be because your exception goes from $9M to $4.8M.

bring
Member
Free agent

You mention below that Rozier has no takers, so I’m assuming qualifying offers will go out to all the RFAs you list above. Ojeleye’s contract becomes guaranteed on 7/1 – it’s short $ so I guess they let it happen. Ainge is trying to redo Horford’s deal, so there could be savings there

MrScratch
Member
Free agent
MrScratch

QO for Rozier and Wanamaker is ~$12M. I would give Theis an extension around $6.5M. That would put them a tad under $120M giving them the full MLE and still safely under the tax apron.

With Smart, Heyward, Tatum, Brown, Horford, Rozier, Theis, Baynes, Williams, Wanamaker, MLE and (3) 1st rounders there is one spot for Ojeyle or Yabusele. Maybe they could trade one of them.

MrScratch

That should be ~$6M. Combined with Theis for a little over $12M total.

Dinosaur. Not interested.
If Horford returns and they re-up Theis, they have a good big man group. Horford, Tatum who realistically will play a lot of 4, Baynes as a specialist C who is bulky, Robert Williams and Theis who have the athleticism to switch all the positions.

Of the Rozier, Morris and Theis, the one I think you really ought to make a good effort to keep is Theis.
He deserved to play more than he did last year. 13th out of 100 PF in ESPN’s RPM. He got benched partly because the other guys who play the 4 wouldn’t shut up about sitting and he would.

Likely UFA

Irving

Darren Collison
Cory Joseph
George Hill
Derrick Rose
Patrick Beverley
Rajon Rondo

RFA
Tyus Jones
Tomas Satoransky
Delon Wright
D’Angelo Russell (possible UFA if Irving signs w/ Nets)

Trade Candidates
Mike Conley
Jeff Teague
Goran Dragic

Hard to see why anybody would give Rozier a solid offer off of last years performance..

bring

That list is hardly exciting – either old, or midgets, or non-athletic, or can’t shoot, or won’t defend – Rozier (despite last season) tops many of them – stats don’t tell the whole story, sorry

MrScratch
Member
Free agent
MrScratch

What has Rozier done? He’s a back up PG who has put up back-up Pg numbers. He was 42nd in RPM among PG last year. He had a net rating of -2. And at 25, he’s not that young in the NBA. He had a nice playoff run..last year. That’s his main credential.

There are top PG available, there are established starters, there are young PG available, there are “get you by” veterans. Then there will draft picks. It’s a totally saturated market.

bring
Member
Free agent

Net rating? Good grief….
(despite last season) recognizes he had major issues sitting – which he will have to explain to anyone willing to sign him. Nothing wrong with buying low – though BOS might match then

hugo #FreeBoney
Member
Free agent
hugo #FreeBoney

Yeah, he’s young compared to the established good players above, but he’s not dream-on-it young either. A bad team could go with a draftee, with cost control and who is 4 years younger. they don’t need to overpay for Rozier’s theoretical upside
Meanwhile, Rozier doesn’t have value to a team that wants to win right now. We’ve seen that movie already. Beverley does. Cory Joseph does. Conley and Holiday most certainly do.

MrScratch
Member
Free agent
MrScratch

Heck, with Garland you get 6 years younger.

And if you want to go after proven younger upside and are willing (and able) to do it: you throw big money at Russell.

If you are looking to take a chance with a”good offer” on projectable upside for a younger back up who has the tools and could become a star , you go after Jones.

If you need a solid veteran starter or back-up, there are plenty of options. Even if it’s to groom a guy.

Hard to see any reason anyone would throw years and money at Rozier.

If NO flips it, possibly but hard to imagine what team’s coming in there for Garland.

MrScratch

Totally agree. They need to walk away from Morris. He’s simply too redundant and a total ball stopper. Best thing for both sides is to have Rozier play out on the qualifying offer and try to improve his stock. Celtics can’t pay him on what he put out there last year and if he shows this year he’ll improve his market. Theis is a very valuable dirty work guy/ bench player who could probably be locked up long-term on the cheap and young enough to not have to worry about it. I’m thinking something like 4/ $26M.

hugo #FreeBoney
Member

4/$26M is perfect.

Win-win trade between the Lakers and the Pels. Lakers get AD. Pels get a ton of picks, #4 and enough future ones that if the LAL thing goes sour or someone gets injured, it could be the Nets trade 2.0

Lakers got the face of the franchise of the next decade, specially after Lebron leaving. AD is just 26 years old

Pels did very well considering that they only had two options and the other one was a team that had very little for assets outside of a pick one spot higher than what they got. Very nice haul considering the Lakers were essentially bidding against themselves.

But Lakers had to get him or the off-season was likely going to be disaster. Now the trick is what they do around him, because it looks like they may be a bit of a bind filling out the roster.

Even if that were to happen (which either requires parties doing things that are against their best interests or a star taking drastically less money) than they’d still be looking a situation where they’d have that player, LBJ, AD, Kuzma along with Bonga and Wagner and be filling out the roster with low level vet minimum guys (aka- 6 JaVale McGees). That’s a lot to put on just 3 guys.

Problem for them is that giving a huge chunk of whatever they end up having left over to any single player leaves them woefully thin. Anthony Davis played 56 G last year and averages 66. leBron played 55 G. Boogie played 30 G. Kuzma and then…. Wagner and Bonga? Neither of whom did anything last year. They’ll have a $4.8M room exception (can’t really get much for that) and then be down to minimum salaries to fill out the roster.

Deadsmack #EverythingWeGot

Lakers could offer room exception, that’s what he took to sign with the Warriors

MrScratch

I seriously doubt Boogie is taking $4.8M. He did that knowing he’d only be available late in the season/ playoffs and he wasn’t getting a huge long-term deal under that circumstance. He’s going to be 29 and one more injury and his chance at the big pay days is gone.

Deadsmack #EverythingWeGot

Deadsmack #EverythingWeGot

He is not getting a huge deal, he showed a lot of rust. But signing with Lakers 1 year deal can be huge for him, it gives him another chance to fight for a championship, plus he showed he can play with AD when they were both with the Pels, but now they can also have Lebron and maybe some other star.

MrScratch
Member

He’s over a year removed from the achilles and he’s still one of the better players on the market. And there’s a lot of money out there and teams he could compete on or get paid by. And, if he decide to do another one year deal at low money he’d probably just stay in Golden State.

One can argue this game should be 2-1 US.

Was that obvious offsides not offsides?

I only saw one replay, not from the best angle. Mayb other angles were better.

I thought she was three feet offside at the touch, and the keeper bailed out so as not to take a knee to the face on a maybe dangerous play.

OK. Like I said.I saw just the one replay as I turned on the TV. Didn’t see the play itself. Sounds like it was clearly offside.

It was. US got a goal off a corner kick that should have been a goal kick, though. Pugh carried it fully out yet the US got a corner. Endler is a heckuva goalie and was the only ting keeping close. Game wasn’t really close.

Well that was appropriate. Shouldn’t have been a PK in the first place.

Along with #4, Pelicans got 2021 Protected Top 8 that becomes unprotected in 2022. Got 2023 and 2025 unprotected pick swap. 2024 unprotected 1st. Pretty nice draft haul.

And as of now, expectation is that the trade will executed July 6. That’s somewhat of a double edge sword anyway.

Physically, I think it would be too tough for them but they could certainly teach the men’s team how to play the game mentally.

This ref in the USA/CHI game is not great. US should not have gotten its second goal the way it did. Should. Hav. E been a goal kick for CHI instead of the corner for the US (leading to a goal). Then not long after a US payer is called for a foul even though it was her face that was shoved aside.

And one could argue CHI got a goal incorrectly taken away on an offside. Changes the flow of the game.

Pelicans did well considering that they were essentially boxed into to doing a deal with a Lakers. I have a feeling Boston was never really in this but pretended they were as to not tank the market on New Orleans. They were smart to not pull a San Antonio and wait until July when the offers may be bare bones. Everyone was citing the Kawhi deal as to why the Celtics should do this. But that trade would’ve looked awfully different if the Spurs had gotten back Siakam, Van Vleet and Anunoby. At this point, Ainge should simply not even… Read more »

I agree with your assessment on the C’s… I’m happy if they stay put, and only add a few role players this offseason. I think that team will have better chemistry, be more exciting to watch, and may just sneak into the finals with a few good series.

Rozier definitely caused problems during the season, then burned bridges after the season, so not sure Danny/Brad even want him back. Potentially, they could trade up for the 4 pick to take a point guard. Smart can start until the kid is ready.

What would they trade to get to 4?

Their current picks plus Memphis pick

Edit – if NO wants a player, then it prob can’t happen

Also, Smack.. Hayward wasn’t the problem. Kyrie Irving missing 30+ shots a game was the problem– it’s now apparent that Brooklyn wants that problem.

Looking forward to that today–watching it with my soccer-playing 10 yo daughter. That by itself will be a great Father’s Day. GO USA.

I’m glad Davis is going elsewhere. The C’s just seemed in the same kind of roster limbo the Lakers occupied in February except they were in it all year. Their path is now clear. Wave bye to Kyrie, commit to making the best team you can with all the young talent on the roster, and hope Gordon returns to some semblance of a form that you can trade him to keep Brown getting minutes. I like the idea of going with the guys who got you so far in the playoffs two years ago. Horford is older, of course, and… Read more »

The Cs can not recover Kyrie’s cap space when he leaves – so don’t bother investigating replacement free agents

there really aren’t any big name free agents that are going to ‘push the celtics over the top’.. that being said, they could be a dangerously good team with the pieces they have on the roster NOW.

They have to hope “addition by subtraction” applies in this case
