Predicting Jersey Numbers For Every New Patriot

-by DNOMN8R314

(NOTE: I originally posted this on r/Patriots.)

Bill Belichick is notoriously tardy when it comes to announcing the jersey numbers for new additions to the team, whether a veteran brought in during the offseason or a rookie snapped up during the draft. For those of us looking to purchase a new player’s jersey, or those of us who just really love uniform numbers (shameless plug: r/uninumbers), this is annoying.

Of the Patriots’ 90-man roster, 36 players are listed on the team website as digitless. I’ve gone through these players and taken my best guess at numbering all of them.

Here, then, are my guesses for the jersey numbers of each new Patriot. (I’ve also given my reasoning behind them, just to show I’ve put thought into this rather than picking randomly.)

AVAILABLE NUMBERS

NOTE: This is assuming no players currently on the team – including the suspended Josh Gordon – change their number. I am also excluding 87; you know why.

1, 4, 7, 8, 9, 15, 16, 19, 25, 33, 37, 41, 42, 47, 50, 59, 64, 65, 67, 68, 71, 77, 81, 82, 83, 84, 86, 88, 90, 94, 96, 98, 99.

One other note: I’ve included a couple players whose signings have been reported but not made official, so it’s likely a couple of these guys won’t be Pats for much longer; this will cause slight changes to my guesses, but no major shuffles.

Now then, going roughly chronologically:

OFFSEASON ACQUISITIONS (pre-draft)

  • Jake Eldrenkamp: 64. Young guy, futures signing, probably going to get a sloppier number.
  • David Parry: 96. Parry actually wore 54 as a nose tackle in college and his first years in the NFL, but that’s obviously unavailable. Since Parry is a bigger DL, I thought he should have a number with curves.
  • Brandon Bolden: 38. It’s the number he wore his first stint in New England. (And in Miami.) No expectation he’ll change to anything else.
  • Michael Bennett: 77. Bennett has mostly worn 70s numbers in the league – 71 with the Bucs, 72 in Seattle, 77 as an Eagle – so I stuck with the theme. Right now, 72 belongs to Dan Skipper, a tackle who finished last year on the practice squad, so I went with 77. Plus, Bennett shared a graphic of him in a Patriots #77 uniform after the team traded for him.
  • Terrence Brooks: 25. It was closest to the 23 Brooks wore a as a Jet, and it’s a good free safety number.
  • Maurice Harris: 19. The Patriots also signed Bruce Ellington (since released) on the same day, and I was deciding between 16 and 19 for each as both have only worn 10s numbers as pros. I gave 16 to Ellington and 19 to Harris, as I thought 19 would look better on a bigger wideout and 16 on a smaller guy. (You’ll come across 16 later.)
  • Matt LaCosse: 82. LaCosse wore 81 as a Giant and 83 as a Bronco. I split the difference. Plus, in the Patriots’ number font style, I’m not huge on 83 for a tight end. It’s part of why Mahty changed to 88. (Couldn’t find a reference, but I remember him mentioning that in New England, 83 looks better on little guys.)
  • Mike Pennel: 99. Pennel wore 98 in New York, and that’s available with Trey Flowers gone, but it’s been too long since the Pats have had a guy who could make #99 proud.
  • Cedrick Lang: 70 (doubled with Adam Butler). Lang’s projected number, originally 68, shuffled around during the offseason. I didn’t want to have to double a number with Butler, but with the large crop of rookie offensive linemen brought in and Jared Veldheer signed, I ran out of numbers.
  • Jakob Johnson: 44 (doubled with Christian Sam). Johnson wore 44 in college and it’s a good fullback/TE number. Works for me.
  • Austin Seferian-Jenkins: 88. ASJ wore 88 in college, in Jacksonville, and in New York. With the number available in New England, this was an easy choice… for about a week.
  • Demaryius Thomas: 81. I really wanted to give 88 to Thomas, as the BB/TB-era Pats have never had a high-level receiver wearing 88. But Thomas changed his number once already, taking 87 in Houston. As I’d already assigned 88 and am not assigning 87, I went with 81, also a good WR number, and incidentally the one Thomas’ ex-teammate Eric Decker wore in last year’s Pats training camp.

OFFSEASON ACQUISITIONS (post-draft)

(Why am I skipping the rookies right now? Two reasons: Seniority may let some players lay claim to numbers, and with the rookies possibly wearing “camp numbers” as they did last year before preseason games start, these will become known sooner.)

  • Shilique Calhoun: 94. Calhoun wore 91 in Oakland, which belongs to Deatrich Wise Jr., but I expect him to take another 90s number. I picked 94 because it blends a curvy first digit with an angular second, as does 91.
  • Nick Thurman: 98. I’d run out of 90s numbers. (You’ll see another one later.) By the way, I’ve noticed Pro-Football-Reference has some of these players listed with numbers, but I don’t see any source for those numbers, especially as some are duplicated with current Patriots. (For example, the site has Maurice Harris as #13, and Phillip Dorsett also as #13.) So I’m ignoring their listings, including that of Thurman wearing 68, as I see no reason to take them as official.
  • Benjamin Watson: 84. Watson’s worn 82 for most of his career, but he wore 84 as a Patriot for his first six years in the league. As luck would have it, that number is available upon his return to New England.
  • Jared Veldheer: 68. Veldheer’s worn 68 for all but the last two seasons of his career.
  • Dontrelle Inman: 16. Inman’s mostly worn 15, but as you’ll soon see, I’ve made that unavailable, so he gets the only other 10s number left.

DRAFT PICKS

  • N’Keal Harry: 15. Wideouts are by far trending towards wearing 10s numbers in the current NFL. Harry’s Twitter handle includes the number 15. That settles it.
  • Joejuan Williams: 37. With no numbers available that included his college number 8, I had to make a judgment call. I took 37 because of its association with being a hard-hitting defensive back. Then Rodney Harrison won the Pats HOF induction, and I felt even stronger about this choice of number.
  • Chase Winovich: 50. The Rob Ninkovich comparisons are already there; why not throw in one more. (Though if Mike Pennel keeps 98, Winovich is my pick to wear 99.)
  • Damien Harris: 33. Rex Burkhead has Harris’ collegiate 34, but 33 is right next to it. And Jeremy Hill (briefly) wore 33 last year, so it’s not like the number is limited to smaller backs.
  • Yodny Cajuste: 67. If Ryker Matthews hadn’t been on the roster as a futures signing, I’d have guessed 65, with the same final digit as Cajuste’s 55 from West Virginia. But when Matthews was released, I gave 65 to another player, having picked 67 for Cajuste because I thought he’d have a 60s number and no other was available. (And the Pats last year had a tackle – Ulrick John – wearing 67, so it’s similarly not restricted to the interior line.)
  • Hjalte Froholdt: 71. I was able to match trailing digits with Froholdt, who wore 51 at Arkansas. The pick of numbers also reminded me of Russ Hochstein.
  • Jarrett Stidham: 8. College number.
  • Byron Cowart: 90. At the time, I was choosing between 90, 94, and 98; Coward’s single-digit 9 from Maryland tipped the balance toward the first, as 9 plus 0 equals 9.
  • Jake Bailey: 4. Please don’t shoot me for projecting Adam Vinatieri’s number to a punter. But as Bailey wore 14 at Stanford and Braxton Berrios wears 14 in Foxboro, I thought it easiest to drop the leading 1. (My second choice for Bailey is 7, which is half of 14 and also the number assigned to Corey Bojorquez last year, but I don’t like 7 on a punter in the Pats’ font.)
  • Ken Webster: 42. With limited choices, I remembered the Pats assigned Duke Dawson 42 for camp last year (and Kenny Moore a couple years ago), so that number has precedent in the summer for a cornerback.

UNDRAFTED ROOKIES

  • Calvin Anderson: 65. At this point I’m picking from what’s left. Anderson wore 66 at Texas, and the next number over is on the board, so he gets it.
  • Andrew Beck: 47 (doubled with Malik Gant) (spoiler). Beck’s college number wasn’t available, then Jacob Hollister was traded to Seattle, then it was.
  • Nick Brossette: 41 (doubled with D’Angelo Ross) (spoiler again). By rule of what was available, and preferring to double rookies with other rookies than veterans, the pick was 41 or 42. While 42 has a nice running back association via BenJarvus Green-Ellis, I went with the other option so that draft picks could remain unpaired if possible. (I will also remind you all that the Saints’ Alvin Kamara wears 41 and is awesome, so that number isn’t locked away from running backs… or from good running backs.)
  • Ryan Davis: 83. The slot receiver gets a slot receiver number, and one he did wear during part of his Auburn tenure (he also wore 23).
  • Malik Gant: 47 (doubled with Andrew Beck). I still think of 47 for a strong safety as having similar hard-hitting qualities as 37, this time via John Lynch.
  • Tyler Gauthier: 59 (doubled with Terez Hall) (last spoiler, promise). I ran out of OL numbers and had to slip into the 50s. The Pats have had an interior lineman wear 59 in camp before – Jon Halapio, in his second try in New England, before finally succeeding with the Giants – and with how many linemen are in camp, it’s probably going to happen again.
  • Terez Hall: 59 (paired with Tyler Gauthier): The Patriots prefer giving 50s numbers to linebackers rather than 40s numbers, and 59 was the only one left.
  • Jakobi Meyers: 9. Thanks to Watson signing, I ran out of receiver numbers too. Since I’m not assiging 87, I was left with 86 and a single-digit number, and two UDFA receivers. I decided Meyers should get the single digit since I didn’t think 86 would look as good on him, and I took 9 because that’s the number the Patriots tend to give out when they need a single-digit number for camp (a la Terell Brown and V’Angelo Bentley).
  • D’Angelo Ross: 41 (doubled with Nick Brossette). Needed to pair with someone, and 41 is not a bad cornerback number (unless you are Cyrus Jones).
  • Tyree St. Louis: 58 (doubled with Keionta Davis). I really ran out of OL numbers. (Also, I didn’t want to pair anyone with Michael Bennett.)
  • Xavier Ubosi: 86. I explained why in the Meyers paragraph.

If you took the time to read this, thanks. If you didn’t, I understand completely.

And if you’d like to make your own guesses, feel free. Obviously I do not claim a monopoly on jersey number predictions.

The pre-pre-preseason continues.

Decent summary of last night’s lottery from the Cs’ perspective:

https://www.bostonherald.com/2019/05/14/celtics-fail-to-bounce-up-in-nba-draft-lottery/

This quote is for Scratch:

“The Celtics would have ended up with the Memphis pick had it fallen outside the top eight, and now have a far more valuable asset tied to next year’s draft, either to trade or keep for their own. Should the pick bounce to 2021, it will be unprotected.”

Regarding Zion:

Pels getting #1 actually helps the Cs, I think. By the Cs, I mean Danny’s blind pursuit of AD.

Forget all the talk about the Pels keeping AD – it’s pure bluster. Yes, trading him means losing a top 5 player – any team would cringe at the thought. But now they potentially have a star replacement (different position, but star none the less). I’m guessing they will prefer young established NBA players to surround Zion, vs future draft picks. This keeps the Cs at the top of the list.

Rask shutting them down in the 1st period won this game. Should have been 2 or 3 goals for Carolina. Best he’s ever played.

Can someone explain the NBA lottery to a casual Celtics fan. How should I feel?

MrLucky

Indifferent. Celtics had the Kings pick, who had the lowest chance to win the lottery so they pick where they were projected. Knicks had the highest chance of winning and slipped to 3 so they should be bummed.

Very interesting lottery. All of our focus was on Knicks hopefully not getting #1 so they could trade it to Pels for AD. Never really considered that Pels could get #1. Zion gives them a star player to replace AD, so perhaps they value established young players now over future draft picks in return. Don’t believe them when they say they will try to keep AD. They just don’t want to be told what to do. They should be able to get a hefty return.
