2019 Mock Draft Contest Results

-by DNOMN8R314

The draft is beyond us, UDFAs are penned to contracts, and we now await seeing the newest Patriots take the field. While we do that, let’s wrap up draft season with the results from this year’s NEPFF mock draft contest.

Before I get to the results, I’d like to make one more rules clarification: the “multiple correct guesses” bonus points are only awarded for correct guesses in the main list of 12. (I stated this in the comments before I tallied the points for everyone’s entries.)

Now then, we’re on to

THE RESULTS

Six NEPFF regulars sent in entries this year. Three of them – including my own entry – got none correct. (Ouch.) So to myself, Jdog Lemon Head, and memokerobi: we’ll get ’em next year. (Or during the roster projection contest. Or both.)

Now for the good entries.

evaldes101993 takes third place with a respectable 6 points, correctly slotting Joejuan Williams into his projected New England draft class. Well done.

But if you’ve spotted my recent comments, I stated that there were two entries that rose above the rest: those from dp73 and Hugo was my homeboy.

So did Hugo reclaim the crown, or did dp drop him down to second place for the second straight year?

Well:

At the end of the seventh round, both dp and Hugo had a pair of correct guesses in their list of 12, and both had correctly pinged the correct round for one of them.

However, dp had a slight advantage on points. His correct guesses were in the third (N’Keal Harry, 10 points) and fourth (Chase Winovich, 9 points) slots on the list, while Hugo’s were in the third (Williams, 10 points) and fifth (Jarrett Stidham, 8 points), a slight one-point advantage. Hugo’s 3-point bonus for guessing Williams would be selected in the second round was cancelled out by dp’s rightly selecting Winovich in the third. Each also received a single bonus point for having two answers correct.

But dp added to that advantage by having Stidham among his bonus quarterbacks, the extra three points upping his total to 26, four ahead of Hugo’s 22.

Then came UDFA announcements.

And Hugo had Terez Hall seventh on his board.

Hugo’s possible six points for Hall were slashed to 3 because he had him as a draft pick (seventh round), but the single bonus point for having two correct answers became 3 bonus points for a trio of right guesses.

Those additional five points boosted Hugo’s total to 27… one point ahead of dp’s 26.

Thus, I am pleased to announce that Hugo was my homeboy is once again the NEPFF Pats-Only Mock Draft Champion.

The contest results can be found in this link, and the list of all players guessed in our mocks can be found in this other link.

Enjoy the rest of the offseason – happy spring.

(I’ve mentioned that, with the multiple-right-answers points rule in place last year, Hugo would have beaten me by one point. This year, thanks to that rule, he has reclaimed the title by one point. Poetic.)

Saw a suggestion from a Panthers website that they “stole” Will Grier from us in 3rd round. I looked at what happened prior, and my response to that is a definite no. We actually traded down to the spot behind the Panthers prior to them making the pick. Normally we trade out from a spot if someone snags who we want just ahead of us. Ironically, the guy we wanted was Grier’s team mate. Regarding the QB we took late in 4th. Don’t let the spot fool you – once Cinci grabbed Finley early in the round, we knew we… Read more »

I like Grier more than Stidham, but i agree that if Pats wanted him they would have gotten him by trading up (like they did with Jimmy G). They same can be said about Finley. They valued Harris more than any of them and RB was not a big need (although i love the RB by comitee approach). I was not happy with Stidham pick, because i thought Rypien (Boise State QB) was a better option after Grier and Finley picks, but he even went as UDFA for the Broncos (a team that already picked Lock). I’m confortable with Stidham… Read more »

I’m not a big fan of Etling as a real viable option to be Pats backup QB, but it is cool to have a QB like him on the PS to prepare for running QB’s.
I think Stidham has some upside to get the backup QB spot, specially in 2020 when Hoyer will most likely leave.

Former Orlando Magic and Indiana Pacers coach Frank Vogel has agreed to a three-year deal to become the next head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, league sources told ESPN, with Jason Kidd agreeing to join Vogel’s staff in a prominent assistant-coaching role.

Vogel’s hiring speaks to the significant influence of Lakers adviser Kurt Rambis and former coach Phil Jackson, whose opinions weigh heavily with owner Jeanie Buss. Vogel was the runner-up to Jeff Hornacek when Jackson hired a New York Knicks replacement for Derek Fisher in the summer of 2016.
Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka had spent the past few days gathering information from those who have worked with both Vogel and Kidd about how they believe those two could complement each other on a Lakers coaching staff, league sources said.

I have them in order and I think the Chicago deal is the best of the group. They take felicio’s money and he’s virtually worthless but that’s not a big deal. They get a young PG in Dunn who has been a bit of a disappointment but is still a decent player. They get a young big with high upside in Carter and a young cheap wing in Hutchison. They’d also then hold (projected) #4 and #7 which assures them of two from the group of Barrett, White, Reddish, Hunter, Culver. Assuming Randle opts out, they renounce Stanley Johnson, stretch… Read more »

Dunn has no value – he can’t shoot – he played at my alma mater – trust me, I’ve seen a lot more of him than you. Carter is a JAG. The only draft pick with value this year is #1 – it’s basically the only thing that trumps Tatum.

MrScratch

Dunn is actually an effective 45% fg shooter who shot 35% from 3 this past season. He’s average double digit points with 6 apg and over 1.5 spg the last two years. Carter averaged 10 ppg, 7 rpg, 1.3 bpg shot .485 from the field and .795 from the line at 19 years-old. That’s no JAG. The idea that Davis pulls a huge ransom is totally unfounded. If the Knicks get #1, maybe they would trade it for him but maybe they won’t. As good as he is, you’re getting one year and at $27.2M to boot. Paul george fetched… Read more »

The Lakers make a ton of sense. They have the slot, it’s where guys who want to be in movies play and who else is going there? Maybe, Jimmy Butler but I don’t see any of the other top FA like Durant, Klay, Kawhi, wanting to join Bron. If it’s not Kyrie their best hope may be Boogie.

MrScratch

Undoubtedly. If the Lakers don’t end up with one of the big 6 (Kawhi, Klay, KD, Butler, Kyrie, Kemba) this off-season will be a total bust. And unless they move into top 3 and are willing to take back Moore or Hill, I don’t see much chance at getting AD. Ball and Ingram are now virtually worthless. They may be able to move them to a rebuilding team for veteran salary but that’s about it.

I’m very against an AD trade at this point. IMO the Celts need to just let the vets walk, use all three 1sts and pray. Let Smart and Jaylen be the conscience of the team. Hope that Tatum develops into a 25ppg two way player.

Davis is a great talent, but he’s known to be very immature, and he has a track record of not carrying his team in the W-L column. Sound familiar?
Between Horford’s opt-out, and the cost to trade for Davis (Smart, Brown), you’d be losing Tatum but you’d also be everyone who really plays for the team. Meanwhile you’d have to overpay for the selfish bums you have bird rights for (Rozier and Morris).

Many want the pick to roll over to next year or the year after. But if it lands at #9 this year and they get it now, it’s not necessarily a bad thing. Because it’s a sure thing lotto pick right now. If it rolls over, you don’t know what you might get. Most of us thought the Kings pick would be a dandy this year as well with the Lakers pick a year before. Neither turned out to be true. You never know

Potentially. Depends on how other teams view the Grizzlies. Memphis could always luck into a top 3 pick this year which would obviously improve their roster. Also depends if they keep Conley and Valanciunas or decide to hit restart. They were playing better at the end of the year after JV came over

It’d be an insane deal, but one place that could land AD and get Kyrie along with another max guy (say Jimmy Butler) and assemble a damn good team is Atlanta.

MrScratch
Member
Free agent
MrScratch

Players don’t seem to be concerned about giving up tens of millions. KD did it, Kawhi did it, AD is doing it. The thing for Kyrie is that his market somewhat limited. The Knicks would need to do some serious maneuvering to fit Kyrie another max guy and get vets around them. Same for the Lakers with leBron. Same for the Clippers with Kawhi. And the Nets will only have one max spot and already have Russell. I think it still looks like the fate of Kyrie is hinged primarily to who becomes willing to go all in on AD.

It sure is, especially given the fact that AD can turn around and bolt

MrScratch

Even if he extended, they’d have a thin roster, no cap space and would be waaaaaaayyyyy into the tax. And I don’t see that +AD – Tatum/ Smart makes them any better. And that’s even assuming Tatum have a huge leap.

MrScratch
Member
Free agent
MrScratch

Also, even if they put that on the table… they have no assurance of getting AD. It will all depend on where assets fall (lottery) and who is willing to give up what. Also, if AD has a “list” of exclusive destinations.

MrScratch

1) I don’t think it will necessarily take #1, when it’s all said and done I don’t think there will be huge difference between Morant and Williamson. And depending on the team, even someone at #3 or 4 would have a chance to put together a nice offer. If Boston (likely) comes up 14 that’s not hugely attractive and the future Memphis pick is an unknown. 2) There are a bunch of teams that could land in the top 3 and leverage that pick in a package and may be desperate enough to put together a huge offer: Chicago, Atlanta,… Read more »

Unfortunately, Hayward is unmovable – Horford will pick up his option – Rozier is a question mark – Morris might want to stay but there is no $

hugo #FreeBoney

Morris should be gone. His value was that you have his bird rights, so if they traded their youth for AD, they can plausibly re-sign him. That’s why Danny held onto him in spite of the obvious chemistry problems that having too many chuckers was causing in the present.

MrScratch

This the problem though: you unload the youth for AD and Morris has you by the balls. And then whatever ransom he extracts gets multiplied by your tax penalty.

hugo #FreeBoney

hugo #FreeBoney

Well, if Danny pulls the trigger on Kyrie/AD as a thing, you know it comes with the expectation of paying a giant tax bill.. I think the other perk of trying to hold onto Morris for the megadeal scenario was that Markieff is a UFA. So you could possibly get him at a discount with the taxpayer MLE. But like I said, I’d rather build around Brown/Tatum/Smart right now. If they sign someone from outside in FA they should look for some lower-tier guys who fall through the cracks. The other guard beyond Satoransky who looks intriguing on the list of NBA UFA is Delon Wright. Played well against us with Toronto. Has size and good advanced stats as a defender. Pass-first rather than score first.
Either way, my point is I’d like to see them focus on adding a player who will embrace a complementary role and who falls through the cracks.

MrScratch

I would agree. I think Kyrie leaves anyway. Beyond the Tatum/ Brown/ Rozier issues he reportedly didn’t mesh with hayward and he has to view Horford as an aging/ declining player. I don’t think he likes it here anyway. In that case, I expect Rozier to play out his QO and try to establish FA value. Unfortunately, both Satoransky and Wright are restricted, as well. But they would have the full MLE in that case and I’d love to see them pursue a guy like Ed davis or Kenneth faried

Hold on, Kyrie would be giving up how much money by not re-signing with Boston?

There are bigger odds he signs with the Lakers than with Celtics. Clearly, he is on his way out from Boston

It doesn’t matter if it is the Lakers, Knicks, Nets, Clippers or anybody else. Most likely he won’t re-sign with the Celtics

You realize these are all rumors started by people who have no idea. I don’t think even Kyrie knows what he’s going to do yet. But why would he give up $50-70 million? I’m not even advocating for the Celtics to re-sign him. I am not a hoops fan but it sounds like a lot of C’s fan want him out anyway.

There is a growing rumor that Kyrie Irving is gonna sign with the Lakers this summer.

But can the Lakers get a Head Coach and possibly a GM?

Did you start this rumor?

Brian Windhorst:
“I would’ve said this was impossible for many months, but as time passes here and as the possibility exists that Kidd could be hired as Lakers’ coach, the possibility of Kyrie Irving and LeBron reuniting is, that door which was deadbolted has now been un-deadbolted and cracked open and might be even opening more by the day. I say that not because… I think it’s on Kyrie’s radar, it’s on Kyrie’s board, Kyrie has had discussions with people about playing for the Lakers.”

The Problem is who do the Lakers put around them? They sign Kyrie and they have about $20M in cap space. $3M gets eaten up by the pick slot. That leaves them limited in filling in the roster depending on how they a lot that money plus the MLE. You still are going to be reliant on younger guys. Which is the exact situation that he had a hard time with in Boston. Now, if they strike lottery lighting and move into the top 3 they could package that pick, Kuzma, Ingram and Ball for Davis… but they’d be filling… Read more »

The Patriots were not a run-heavy or run-first team, but they were a team that usually had the lead. (link: http://www.footballperspective.com/2018-game-scripts-the-steelers-had-the-three-most-pass-happy-games-of-the-year/)

Dontrelle Inman emerged as the No. 2 WR for the Colts down the stretch last season. Now, he gets an opportunity to compete for a job in New England https://www.bostonherald.com/2019/05/10/patriots-sign-wr-dontrelle-inman-per-report/

Being an incoming WR in NE, whether rookie, UDFA or 15yr vet is like a slaughter house. Shove a bunch of bodies through the shoot, and see what comes out the other end. It’s going to be interesting. I think JE, Dorsett, Harry are in – barring injury. And I think there will be 6 total. If I had to guess now, I’d say Harris, Berrios, Meyers/DT (starting on PUP)

BoSoxJim

I really like Meyers potential, but he will probably come down with the Foxboro Flu before the season starts.

He seems like a really good kid. Herm Edwards was talking about how when he took him in his office before the season and told him that they were going to play him inside more, he didn’t put up a fuss. Instead he welcomed the new challenge. He seems like a guy who will accept coaching and whatever role the Pats want him to fill.

dp73

Agreed , being open to coaching is huge for the Patriots especially for a WR in that offense. There are a lot of sight adjustments.

dfwpatsfan

So in the pass heavy NFL, what percentage constitutes run heavy? In isolation anything over 55% offensive snaps is considered leaning on the heavy, but shouldn’t the metric be based on comparison with other teams in the league?

dfwpatsfan
Member
Free agent
dfwpatsfan

IOW, say if the NFL median is 65% pass, would passing 55% constitute as run heavy offense?

hugo #FreeBoney
Member

hugo #FreeBoney

Yeah, you’d have to compare to league average.
But I think what Lazar was getting to with that tweet, is that their offense skews pass in high leverage moments. Which I think is a realistic assessment.

hugo #FreeBoney
Member

hugo #FreeBoney

When the game’s on the line, most NFL offenses pass. Not just the Pats.
I think it’s partly because you can practice passing plays more than running plays. Running plays can only be practiced with pads and contact, which there’s a limit on how much of that can be done in the offeason. Whereas with a pass play, they’ve been able to practice the timing with no restrictions.

BoSoxJim
Member
Free agent
BoSoxJim

Yeah, looking at just the basic %run/pass doesn’t give the whole story.

I just looked it up, the Pats were 7th in the NFL in run %. However, the Saints were 5th and I don’t think anybody would call them a run heavy team.

dfwpatsfan
Member
Free agent
dfwpatsfan

I feel it would depend on the situation. If the games on the line and under 2:00 minutes, running makes no sense unless they’re wasting the clock intentionally. Timeouts factor into this. So situations might warrant a team forced to throw even if they have a better run game.

BoSoxJim
Member
Free agent
BoSoxJim

Also, if you play with a lead, you tend to run the ball more. Would help explain the disparity between the Pats home and road run%. They played really well at home (especially defense…whose home/road splits were eye-popping).

dfwpatsfan
Member

Sure, we could see that in crunch times, offense still goes through Brady. Had a discussion with Jim a few comments below. But it did get me wondering what’s considered a run heavy team today.
