Don’t Try This at Home: Hugo’s 2019 Edge Defender Board

-by Hugo was my homeboy

[ADMIN’S NOTE: Don’t forget to submit your Pats-only mocks before the draft!]

Tier 1 (approx. picks 1-15)

DE Nick Bosa
It’s hard to find a fault with Nick Bosa. While not as large, he is more physical than his brother, and I would contend a more polished player at the same age. His athletic profile checks out, and he’s shown a knack for the big play. The biggest question with Bosa is sample size. He was on a stacked tOSU squad and missed most of his final year of college. Did the strength of the team hide his weaknesses? Will injuries be a theme?

DE Montez Sweat
The combine made Sweat a household name among the draft-following public, but his tape was already a strong endorsement of blue-chip prospect status. He has natural aptitude for the hand-fighting element of the game, flashing a devastating club move, and he can use his length and quickness to beat an offensive lineman inside, outside or go straight through him. With some technical refinement, it’s easy to see him becoming a top pass rusher in the NFL. I think he is every bit the prospect Bosa is.

DE Clelin Ferrell
Physically, Ferrell is a test-tube 4-3 defensive end. While his combine numbers were mediocre and the draft media has pigeonholed him as a lumbering power end, he flashed the ability to get low and bend around the corner in college. He is not without faults; his play recognition is slow and he has difficulty working down the line and defeating cut blocks. Nonetheless, a team drafting Ferrell is getting a great blend of physical traits, production, youth and apparent football character. I think he is a top 15 prospect.

Tier 2 (approx. picks 16-45)

OLB Brian Burns
While he lacks prototypical size, Burns is a fluid and explosive athlete who needs the smallest of windows to slither around the arc. He is physical in attacking blockers and knows how to make himself small to shoot through gaps. Now, size is his big concern. While he tested well at 249 pounds at the combine, whether or not he can keep that weight during a full season is in question. Fortunately for a team that drafts him, Burns has shown the instincts and fluidity to play linebacker, and he could potentially be used in the NFL similarly to Vikings OLB Anthony Barr. Overall, there is some risk to Burns’ profile, but I’m buying.

OLB Josh Allen
A tremendous playmaker in college, Allen is one of the big boom-or-bust prospects in the class. He has shown advanced coverage instincts and a nose for the turnover. At the same time, he has issues setting the edge, and in my opinion, did not demonstrate the functional traits to be a good pass rusher in the NFL. That said, while I see a lot of risk in Allen, I still think he is a solid first round pick based on his productivity in college.

DE Zach Allen
Powerful, instinctive, and fluid, Allen is the kind of positionless DL that teams are embracing across the league. He is often the first man moving off the snap, an advantage compounded by his violent punch and great functional strength for his position. He’s unlikely to rack up sacks and doesn’t have much range in space, but we just saw a DE who doesn’t rack up many sacks get a $90 million contract – there’s more to the position and the league knows it.

DE Anthony Nelson
One of the players I am higher on than the consensus. Nelson oozes potential. His slow reaction to the snap limits his speed rushing potential, but he has the agility and bend to run the arc as an edge rusher despite his frame being closer to that of a 5-tech defensive end. He shows power and the ability to drive single blocks with good pad level. Tackling is a weakness, and he might end up never growing into a single role, but I am very bullish on Nelson. He reminds me of Chandler Jones, who was also supposed to be more of a 5-tech prospect at one point.

Tier 3 (approx. picks 46-75)

OLB Chase Winovich
Winovich tested as well as anyone at the combine, putting to bed the notion that he’s all hustle. He moves comfortably in space and has the pure speed and quickness to win as an edge rusher. He isn’t great at the point of attack, and prefers to attack upfield which will narrow his scheme fits, but he should be a plug-and-play edge linebacker in the pros.

DE Rashan Gary
There are snaps where Rashan Gary looks like a top pick. Unfortunately, they are few and far between. Gary has freakish athleticism but doesn’t know how to use it productively. He plays below his weight class at the point of attack and doesn’t get much out of his length. I actually think he’s more likely to have success as an interior rusher, where his lower body explosiveness is more of an advantage, than as an edge rusher.

Tier 4 (approx. picks 76-105)

DE Jonathan Ledbetter
While he is listed below his teammate D’Andre Walker by the draft media, I came away far more impressed with Ledbetter. He is more powerful than he looks, which is already powerful, and he appears to have the physical toolkit to shed blocks consistently against NFL offensive linemen. His build is somewhat reminiscent of Trey Flowers.

OLB Ben Banogu
Banogu tested outstanding at the NFL combine but doesn’t look that athletic on film. His straight-line explosiveness is an asset, but he lacks some agility. He is a weak responsible edge-setter and appears reasonably instinctive in diagnosing plays in his direction, which will buy him rope to develop his unrefined pass rushing ability on a team that uses a 3-4 OLB type.

Tier 5 (draftable Day 3 players to priority free agents)

DE Isaiah Buggs
While draft season brings a lot of talk of upside, Buggs is a classic example of a low-ceiling, high-floor player. The JUCO product is a conscientious edge-setter at DE who grows roots against double teams and is difficult to move. He demolished star LT Greg Little of Ole Miss. However, his slow first step and lack of movement skills will make him an undervalued asset on draft day.

DE Maxx Crosby
A lanky and fluid athlete, Crosby has some positive traits but does not have an obvious fit at a specific position – not strong enough to be an interior player, too stiff to be an edge rusher. He should be drafted on traits.

DE Jaylon Ferguson
Ferguson is a tweener – poor get-off and bend for an NFL edge rusher, inconsistent setting the edge. He was a very strong college player but his ability to handle NFL size is in doubt.

OLB Christian Miller
Struggling in linebacker drills at the combine did not reflect well on Miller, who flashed speed rushing ability at Alabama and has a great frame for a pass rush specialist. He lacks polish and his impact was not often felt. That said, with development he could potentially rush the passer off the edge in the NFL.

OLB Jachai Polite
Polite was one of the most disappointing prospects for me to watch. Undersized, unremarkable athlete, poor punch, liability versus the run… I’m not sure what role he fills in the NFL.

Tier 6 (Priority free agents or undraftable)

DE Austin Bryant
Looks like a 4-3 LDE off the bus, but didn’t show much as an edge rusher. Was one of the few DL prospects you’ll ever find who was the fourth priority for opposing coaches, and his apparent skill at defeating blockers as a pass rusher really doesn’t match his numbers.

DE Oshane Ximenes
A popular sleeper in the draft media, Ximenes looked quite underwhelming from my looks. Unimpressive movement skills for a small-school prospect, and a soft punch.

DE Joe Jackson
A lumbering base DE who showed little in the way of block-shedding ability at the college level and possesses below-average athleticism and instincts, it is not obvious how Jackson can help an NFL team. I’d guess a team like Cincinatti or NYG that loves big 4-3 DL will take him.

OLB D’Andre Walker
Walker looks the part on the hoof, but he doesn’t do much on the field. As an edge defender who can run and hold his ground and not much else, Walker does not look like an NFL edge prospect. I think his best chance to succeed in the NFL is a conversion to playing Jack LB in the 3-4 full-time. I would not draft him.

DE CeCe Jefferson
Been on the radar for a while, but the least impressive player I saw. Small and ineffective.

OLB Wyatt Ray
3-4 edge player who looked solid across from Zach Allen. No obvious NFL traits.

I said I’d make my jersey number predictions after lunch. It’s now after lunch. These presume that no player current on the roster changes his number. First, the futures contract guys: Jake Eldrenkamp 64, Ryker Mathews 65, David Parry 96. Then the free agents and other offseason acquisitions: Bruce Ellington 16, Maurice Harris 19, Terrence Brooks 25, Jakob Johnson 44 (shared), Cedrick Lang 68, Michael Bennett 77, Austin Seferian-Jenkins 81, Matt LaCosse 82, Demaryius Thomas 88, Mike Pennel 99. Now the draft picks: Jake Bailey 4, Jarrett Stidham 8, N’Keal Harry 15, Damien Harris 33, Joejuan Williams 37, Ken Webster… Read more »
