Pre-Free Agency Free Agency Recap

-by DNOMN8R314

Free agency starts Wednesday afternoon at 4:00, so as can be expected, most of the biggest names available have already agreed to deals. (Such is life with a legal tampering period.)

Before moves become official, here’s a quick recap of all New England’s moves so far… and the moves which most impact the Patriots.

PATRIOTS MOVES

Dwayne Allen released, signs with Dolphins: Allen, acquired from the Colts in 2017, served mostly as a blocking tight end in his two years in New England. While the Patriots initially tried to get him involved in the passing game, he dropped a lot of early targets and became a player used exclusively in the run game, catching just 13 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown in his tenure in Foxboro. But as a blocker, he was dominant. His release cleared roughly $7 million in cap space, and the Brian Flores-helmed Dolphins quickly brought Allen into the fold.

Michael Bennett acquired: This move isn’t official until the new league year begins at 4:00, but it’s been analyzed, dissected, and written up, so it can certainly be discussed. A versatile defensive lineman who made his name in the trenches with the Legion of Boom, Bennett has the ability to play across the defensive line, the aggressiveness to attack opposing quarterbacks, and the talent to remain a force at age 33. The trade compensation is reportedly a swap of 2020 draft picks, a fifth-rounder to Philadelphia for Bennett and a seventh: the same (but in different seasons) as the compensation for Josh Gordon. Another Bill Belichick trademark.

RFAs tendered: The Patriots placed tenders on Josh Gordon (original level) and Jonathan Jones (second-round level), making it unlikely either player is signed away as the signing team would have to give up a Day 2 pick. Interestingly, although Gordon was a supplemental second-round pick, the Patriots would only receive a third-round selection should some other team sign him due to an unusual situation covered in the CBA. Since Gordon is still suspended, that probably won’t happen.

EVERYONE ELSE’S MOVES

Brown, Flowers, Patterson, Rowe depart: For the second consecutive season, the Patriots are quickly projected to have two third-round compensatory picks in the coming draft after their most notable free agents sign expensive deals elsewhere. Last year it was Malcolm Butler and Nate Solder; now, Trent Brown ($16.5 million average) and Trey Flowers ($18 million average) will join the Raiders and Lions, respectively. New England loses two immensely talented players, but have prepared to replace them, drafting Isaiah Wynn in the first round last year to take over at left tackle, and acquiring Bennett in place of Flowers. (He may be a dark horse, but a Derek Rivers emergence would be fantastic as well.) In later, lower-cost moves, Cordarrelle Patterson will sign two-year contract with the Bears, against whom he ran back a kickoff 95 yards for a score last year, and Eric Rowe signed a one-year deal with Miami.

Slot receivers get paid: Adam Humphries gets $9M/year from the Titans, Jamison Crowder gets $9.5M/year from the Jets, Cole Beasley gets $7.25M/year from the Bills… it’s a good year to be a slot receiver on the market. Even old friend Danny Amendola, released by the Dolphins, has joined the Lions on a one-year deal worth $4.5 million (up to $5.75 million in incentives). The only major name left on the market at time of publishing is Golden Tate, considered to be the top slot receiver in this year’s entire class. Will the Patriots go after him, or will they try to sign a lower-cost player for potential production along the lines of 2016 Chris Hogan? We’ll find out soon.

Division rivals spending: The Jets blew up the market to bring in C.J. Mosley, tried to pair him with Anthony Barr (and briefly succeeded), brought in Crowder for a high cost and Josh Bellamy for less, traded for Kelechi Osemele, re-signed Henry Anderson, and lured Le’Veon Bell out of his holdout. The Bills gave Mitch Morse top dollar, signed John Brown and Beasley to shape up their receiving corps, added Frank Gore to pair with LeSean McCoy, and have also brought in Kevin Johnson, Tyler Kroft, and Ty Nsekhe. The Dolphins have added two ex-Patriots in Allen and Rowe, and with Flores coaching, it’s expected they’ll go after similar players to New England. The AFC East has not rested, while Belichick is swimming. (Literally. And that’s not a bad thing.)

Today’s trivia question:

In the early ’70s, the Pats were also known by another name (for a short time). What was it?

Not sure if we can afford to bring anyone to camp barring a change, but there’s some interesting defenders still on the market
SS Jonathan Cyprien – Plays nickel LB vs the run more than deep safety
DE Aaron Lynch – Another body to throw at the void left by Flowers, would push Rivers for a roster spot as designated 3rd down guy.
DT/DE Brent Urban – Something to throw against the wall in replacing Flowers. Plays DT on passing downs and as a big DE. Not an edge rusher but BB likes power on the edge and 2-gappers.

That said I think the exact names are less important at this stage than the fact that we can start looking at fliers with low or no guarantees.

I love the Mike Pennel signing at defensive tackle. Patriots fans will overlook this signing now but during the season his presence as a good player will make people notice a sneaky good BB signing.

The Patriots will draft future HOF qb Will Grier from West Virginia and Jim—-you will like it 😛

Nothing else to add so may as well play a tune. Been on a Joy Division kick lately so why not

All nose tackles are “starters” in name but backups snapwise. If the Pats have a nose tackle hitting half the snaps, the offense is getting into a lot of short 2nd and 3rd downs. And there’s a bigger problem.

Two down rotational NT, twice suspended for violating substance abuse policy and will be 28. I’d guess when it was said and done, he was the best they could afford to fill that role. Should contribute but I’d doubt he turns into a cornerstone.

OK, this is wicked amusing (from Kyed):

Let’s go position by position and assess the Patriots’ level of need at each:

QUARTERBACK
Tom Brady
Brian Hoyer
Danny Etling

Unless you’re related to Etling, then you can look at this list and see the Patriots still need a quarterback of the future.

I think Hoyer could be alright for about a month before his inconsistency started to show. I think the Patriots need and upgrade over Etling and Hoyer. What I don’t know if this year is the year we can get one in the draft.

MrScratch

That’s a lot of guys overvaluing themselves. Not uncommon for the market to start off hot and then hit a lull, but even then there are usually a spattering of fairly significant signings until the second wave kicks back in. The guys being signed now are more of late free agency additions to compete to plug in holes. There are a good 20-25 bona fide starters still sitting out there and virtually no movement.

Thinking about the Patriots dominance in the AFC East: 17 divisional championships in the last 19 years. The Cleveland Browns have not won their division since 1989. That’s 30 years. We are so lucky to be Patriots fans.

It’s hard for me to trust that Harris or Ellington will even make the team based on the last few years. No matter what big FA WR’s we bring in, or how much they “impress” during OTA’s and TC, they never seem to matter during the season. Which is why it’d be interesting to see Cobb or Nelson come here, but I’d have 0% expectation they’d make it to week 1.

Well Harris is young and I’ve watched him since the Skins drafted him, mostly preseason games but he stepped up this season when called upon due to injuries on the Skins.
I haven’t seen much of Ellington but I’m putting my bets on Harris making the team , he’s talented a good route runner and competes hard.

https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/patriots/alternate-route-potential-patriots-trade-targets-wide-receiver?int#slide-1

Food for thought here. Before the season it is hard to get a give away trade because most teams are trying to win . Even teams like the Giants who are rebuilding could view Sterling Shepard 25 a part of the rebuilding process and not someone they would trade. If the Patriots were able to swing a trade it might be with a team that is deep at WR and closer to the cap than the Patriots. Some team like the Eagles and Nelson Agholor.Even then the Patriot would probably have to give up something of value.

dfwpatsfan
Member

That’s why I feel if there’s any blockbuster trade, it would be at draft time, when some player not on Pats’ radar falls to their position and another teams covets him.

According to Caesers Entertainment, the Patriots are -850 favorites to win the AFC East, which means that it takes a wager of $850 to win only $100.
Given that the Pats have won the division for 10 straight years and 15 out of 16, it’s no surprise. Since the merger, no team has showed that kind of domination over a single division.
The Jets are +650 to win it, and the Bills have been installed at +1000. The Dolphins, meanwhile, are ridiculous longshots at +10,000. Which are basically John-Mellencamp-winning-an-Oscar odds.

I agree on the Fitzmagic 6 game prediction. The other 4…not as much. I like what Indy is doing. I think JAX will be better than last year, not as good as ’17. HOU should get frisky. I expect Mahomes to be even better next year, though the Chiefs may not as a collective team. And I expect the Chargers to also be better with another year under Lynn. The great thing is that they’ll play the games and we’ll get to see if you are right. And there is always a team that comes out of nowhere…Flores is as… Read more »

Reg. Josh Gordon discussion below, while the prudent thing for the NFL is to see if playing competitively is the best thing for Gordon, the other teams might look that as favoritism to the Pats (!) If he gets reinstated with only a token suspension.

Considering how the NFL messes everything up, I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets banned for life.

The NFL drug policy seems more attuned to PED offenders and recreational users than people with actual substance abuse issues like Gordon. It would be good for affected players and teams if the policy was more nuanced to allow teams to support players with recovery via their many resources rather than treat them the same as PED offenders with no allowed contact.

That said…you nailed it–the focus of the NFL’s decision needs to be what is best for Josh Gordon. I just don’t trust them to actually do that.

dfwpatsfan
Member

Honestly if the NFL really knew that he was struggling with substance abuse issues a while back, they should’ve thought about suspensions. What can I expect from them though they’re dolts when it comes to understanding mental health issues.

The big names are gone, but there’s still a decent group of FA WRs:
Hogan
Jordy Nelson
Randall Cobb
Michael Crabtree

I’d be interested in Matthews. But I also wouldn’t be mad if they bring Hogan back. None of these FA’s are going to produce more than him as a 1st year in this system. (maybe Nelson, but not sure if has anything left)

Matthews was good two years ago. Requested his release from the Titans last September citing lack of playing time and targets and didn’t do much with the Jets. He might still have it physically, as he’s only 29, but that release makes me question whether he’d buy in here. If he wants to win and still has it, absolutely.

I don’t agree that this is a decent group of FA WR’s.Have you looked at their recent stats? Did Keyed looked at them either?

Have been No.2/3 is the key phrase here. I think is best is Cobb and Crabtree. The problem with Cobb is that even at only 28 his body has been through a lot .That said if he is healthy then he can help the Patriots. I am not a bigf an of Crabtree and his catch % but he is a decent pro.

I doubt he misses more than 8 games.

I have the gut feeling the NFL is realizing that suspending this sh*t out of him doesn’t work, and doesn’t help.

At some point, the goal here is rehabilitation.. dude has been punished enough, help him get healthy. help him succeed.

Waddle wouldn’t have been that hard to keep if they wanted to. He was good insurance, but it must mean the Pats believe they have better/cheaper options with Croston or other FA’s no one has looked at yet. Also, it seems they’re betting it all on Wynn being a Light/Solder type who can lock it down from day 1.

Exactly, they have guys already on the team they know more about than us, I really think Wynn is ready injury or not, a year to sit helped, maybe they draft one for future but I think it’s Wynn job to lose.

They’ve cut Croston from the 53 before. I wouldn’t assume they have high hopes for him.

From Reiss’ column. So it seems Gordon does count a bit towards the salary cap. .. . . It would be a great story if receiver Josh Gordon is ever reinstated to the NFL, as it would mean his rehabilitation went well, but that isn’t something the Patriots can count on from a team-building perspective because of the fragile nature of the situation. So even though the team made him an original-round tender as a restricted free agent, and is willing to take a $2 million salary-cap charge for it, the smartest approach for the Patriots is to build their… Read more »

Hate to correct Mike Reiss, he knows so much more about football than me. But I must be better in finance than him 🙂 Spending 2 millions and not knowing whether you will have a return on your investment is not called an insurance as Mike says in the article, rather that is an option: it’s like buying a lottery ticket for 2 millions, and have two possible outcomes [A – Gordon does not play at all next season, you get zero in exchange, B – Gordon is reinstated at some point and easily produces like a WR worth 10… Read more »

Left tackle for the Panthers. Age 34. PFF grade 60.9 which is deemed average. Vet depth if options are exhausted ie drafting a tackle, getting a young LT via trade etc etc etc

That is deemed barely average.

Looking at who is available and with the thought process that the Patriots are not going to break the bank on a tackle in free agency. Mostly older vet players at this point who were starters

Penn is available. Doubt he’ll break the bank and he’s motivated.

Today’s trivia question:

In the 1967 draft, the Pats picked 2 players from Harvard. Name them.

5. With the Giants trading Beckham, and then signing Tate to a four-year, $37 million deal, it sparks a question as to their future plans with receiver Sterling Shepard, who enters the final year of his contract. Shepard is a Patriots-type receiver. Perhaps the Patriots could entice the Giants with a second-round draft pick, and then take the money they were going to invest in Humphries and direct it to a Shepard extension one year before he hits the market. -Mike Reiss

Sterling Shepard for a 2nd round pick? Are you high, Mike?

I’d rather use that 2nd round pick on a certain WR that I think you’ve all heard of. 🙂

Agree although 2nd is high for him imo why take the chance…… late 2nd versus early third when you have the draft picks is semantics. I don’t like this draft at all for players that the fit what the Patriots have looked for. I liked Riley Ridley at one time but he is a day 3 pick because of lack of speed which means separation and we have witnessed enough of lack of separation with Hogan

BoSoxJim

This draft is loaded with WRs that would fit the Pats offense.

BoSoxJim

Lack of speed does not mean lack of separation. Some of the best WRs in the NFL run in the mid to upper 4.5s. DeAndre Hopkins is an a example (he ran a 4.57). It’s your route running that gets the separation.

We view the position different. I don’t want to depend on a guys route running for him to get position. Picking the next Keenan Allen is not an easy task and players like him are unique. Allen was also listed with a grade of plus 80 by the NFL draft page so the scouts saw something despite the lack of speed he showed. Other than Isabella I only see Harmon from NC State as a fit. 4.55 guy, big posible number 2 wr maybe number one if he works on route running…compared to Michael Thomas but the thing is Brady… Read more »

Harmon needs to work on route running like most prospects( needs more sharpness in cuts) but he has enough speed and he is also one of the few players I have watched where his highlights show him basically getting molested by cornerbacks yet still makes the catch or is able to run his route despite cb’s grabbing him or yanking his shirt to slow him down. ACC cornerbacks were actually so freaking dirty with him that it made me laugh….he was getting the Gronk treatment so much that I actually had to go back and check how tall he is… Read more »

I get that the Giants are rebuilding but Shepard is still only 26. I think Shepard could still be apart of the rebuilding process for the Giants. I don’t get what is in it for the Giants tomake this trade. The Giants have little in the way of backups at WR.

Jeremy Parnell 32 years will be 33 when the season starts.
Right tackle for the Jaguars. Had some knee issues that kept him out of games late in the year. Was to make 6 million and from reading it seems the Jags are ready to move on to get younger and save the 6 million for other needs so basically an older vet cap casualty
PFF grade (for what its worth) is 65.3 which is above average

Quick history on him. He was a back up for Dallas at one time and turned his time there into a starter in free agency

Things have slowed down in free agency and maybe that means there are some good buys to be had. Question is how much if any money can the Patriots move around to try to take advantage of it.

MasterAndCommander

They stiill lack cap space. They are probably trying to restructure some contracts while also waiting for the price to drop on some players.

Perhaps the most interesting thing in this FA period is that the Patriots have not resigned Allen P and Gostkowski PK.

MasterAndCommander

Even more interesting is that no one else has signed them, particularly Gost. Either teams are happy where they are or the 2 are asking for more than what teams want to pay, including the Pats. .

It will be interesting to see if the Patriots think Donald Penn has anything left at age 36. Will they take a look at him ?

Andrew Whitworth was one of the best OTs in the NFL last year at 36. Penn had a really good year in 2017 at LT.

He’s a little older than I thought. But he is also cheaper than I thought as he took a pay cut to stay in Oakland. He was only due $4.5MM this season. He is certainly worth a look. Hopefully he wants a ring as money doesn’t seem to be his top priority (at least it wasn’t in Oakland).

Agree, 100% worth a look. We are currently poised to start someone at LT who has never played a NFL game before and coming off a serious injury. At the right price, Penn would be a very solid insurance option

Penn is coming off and injury too. Not saying they shouldn’t take a look at him but he did miss 12 games last year.

Bill seems to be taking things slow here. Maybe he is still in vacation mode 🙂

It was a groin injury. Probably could have come back however he wasn’t comfortable (or good) at RT and Gruden was in love with Miller.

Worth a look. I will on occasion read other team blogs and the knock on Penn is that he is good but he also has occasional brain farts sort of like Trent Brown earlier in the year last season.
