Cap Scratch Fever: 5 X 5 Accounting

-by Mr. Scratch

With Friday’s news of the Patriots acquiring Michael Bennett and the Dolphins releasing Danny Amendola, things are starting to look a little clearer. Along with potential moves that I’ve documented this past week, we’ll now take a look at how the Patriots roster could shape up in the next few weeks and months to come.

Please note: I’m not saying that the Patriots will sign these exact players, just highlighting examples of possible positions, player types and contracts that would make sense and fit into the parameters that they have in place.

Another thing to consider in this fluid dymanic is the number of current releases and the additional upcoming released players into the market. The upside of those players is that they do not offset potential compensatory picks, meaning that the Patriots could add additional comp picks by signing these players over actual expiring free agents. Of course, they are also generally older players without the upside value of the players hitting the market coming off rookie contracts.

Most sources currently indicate that the Patriots have around $23.9M in salary cap space, although the actual number varies (slightly) from source to source. But we’ll use that number as a starting point.

1) Additions

Bennett comes in at a cap cost of $7.2M. Considering the Patriots brought him in via trade, they would seem to be comfortable with that number. Since he has an additional year on his deal, New England could massage that figure by converting money into bonus.

Since Bennett’s cap number is reasonably close to the amount I had allocated for Adrian Amos, I’m going to sub him into that slot.

I am going to add in a DB contract slot where I had Darius Philon at DT and allocate it to Jason McCourty. That contract I’ll have as a 2 year, $10M deal structured with a $5M sign bonus and salaries of $1.5M and $3.5M. That pays McCourty a healthy $6.5M this year while only creating a $4M cap cost.

The other signings and slots we have are either Michael Crabtree or Danny Amendola ($3.5M), Jonathan Jones ($3.1M) Malcom Brown ($3M), Cordarrelle Patterson ($2.75M), Maxx Williams ($2.5M), John Simon ($2.0), and Ryan Allen ($1.6M).

I am re-allocating the $2M I had for T.J. Yeldon to Martellus Bennett.

The first year cap cost of this entire group is $31.65M.

2) Subtractions

In addition to the players not re-signed, I am putting Rob Gronkowski aside right now and freeing his $10M salary which actually gives New England a little over $9.5M. I am also anticipating the release of Adrian Clayborn, freeing up another $3.5M. I am also going to convert $3M of Shaq Mason’s new first-year $4M salary to bonus. This opens up $2.4M while only putting $600K a year of dead money on future caps including his final year which currently holds no dead money.

That adds $15.4M to the cap. Also, because of the rule of 51, for every contract New England adds, a lower level contract is removed from the calculation. The bottom 10 contracts that New England holds as of now carry a value of $5.14M, which is now added back.

This leaves New England with $12.79M in cap space.

3) Draft

With Bill Belichick holding twelve picks including six in the top 101 this could be a wild ride. I absolutely suspect the Patriots will begin with moving down from 32. Not only does that pick hold little additional value since very few late rounders have their fifth-year option exercised, it is also a solid cap move.

For a quick illustration, using the Patriots current selections at 32, 56, 73 and 97, what we see is this: the first year cap difference between 32 and 56 is over $700K. The first year cap difference between 56 and 73 is roughly $200K while the first year cap difference between 73 and 97 is under $100K.

A move down with a team like Cleveland who holds two third-round picks would make sense, with New England sending #32 to the Browns for #49 and #80. The Broncos currently hold two fourth-rounders and two fifth-rounders. I could see the Patriots again maximizing value by sending #56 to Denver for #71, #113 and a 2020 fourth-round selection. The Patriots could then move back up the board with a team like Seattle (who only holds 4 picks this year), sending them #101, #134, #205 and #240 to move to #84.

In this type of scenario the Patriots would have essentially moved down their first-rounder 17 spots and a second-rounder 15 spots, given up a seventh-round pick to add a third-round selection, moved up 17 spots in the third and 21 spots in the fourth and have added an additional 2020 4th rounder, making twelve picks total in and twelve picks total out. It also creates a nice “honey hole” for them between the mid-second to the late third round with picks at #49, #64, #71, #73, #80, #84 and #97, giving them seven picks in the top hundred with an additional pick at #113 and holding three seventh-rounders.

Additionally, should the Patriots lose Trey Flowers and Trent Brown, they would be in line for two additional third round compensatory picks provided that they don’t sign any upper-tier free agents (roughly $12M+ per year). That would give them a first, a second, two thirds, two fourths and whatever other comp pick adds they may get in the later rounds.

With this maximized cap value type draft New England would only see a cap cost of roughly $2M added via the draft.

4) Gronk

Should Rob Gronkowski decide to return for next season, this is a contract structure I believe would be fair to both sides:

2 years, $18M (3.5M sign bonus)
Year 1: $2.4M base (100K per active 46 bonus): $4M
Year 1: $6M roster bonus due the 3rd day of the league year, $2.9M base (100K per active 46 bonus).

This gives Gronk a sizable contract number that equals the AAV of his last deal, which is otherwise bogus. However, he still receives a solid pay day in 2019 potentially taking in $7.5M. If everything goes smashingly there is a chance New England pays him in 2020. Otherwise, he’d be a max $5.75M cap cost this year and only a $1.75M cap hit next year.

5) Reset

Should this all line up this way, the Patriots would be looking at $5.6M in cap space heading into this summer. While that is less than New England usually operates with, their cap opens up enormously next year with a projected $100M-110M available (not counting the $17.5M that can be opened up with the releases of Dont’a Hightower, Marcus Cannon and Patrick Chung). At this point, rollover isn’t an enormous issue. They could still do extensions with players like Joe Thuney and either use any existing space they have for bonus pro-ration or simply put all of that money in the future deal.

If they feel that is still too close for comfort, they could absolutely explore restructures with Stephon Gilmore, Hightower or Cannon and even a Tom Brady extension.

Now let’s look at our new 53 man roster. (Players on the bubble or as injury depth are listed in parentheses. Slashes mean either/or.)

QB- Tom Brady, Brian Hoyer
RB- Sony Michel, James White, draft pick/Jeremy Hill, Rex Burkhead, James Develin
WR- Julian Edelman, Michael Crabtree/Danny Amendola, Cordarelle Patterson, draft pick, draft pick, Matthew Slater, (Braxton Berrios, Damoun Patterson, Cody Hollister)
TE- Rob Gronkowski, Maxx Williams, Martellus Bennett, (Stephen Anderson, Jacob Hollister, Ryan Izzo)
OL- Isaiah Wynn, Joe Thuney, David Andrews, Shaq Mason, Marcus Cannon, Ted Karras, draft pick, draft pick, (Cole Croston, Brian Schwenke, James Ferentz)

DL- Malcom Brown, Lawrence Guy, Michael Bennett, Adam Butler, Deatrich Wise Jr., draft pick (Ufomba Kamalu, Keionta Davis)
LB- Kyle Van Noy, Dont’a Hightower, John Simon, Ja’Whaun Bentley, Elandon Roberts, Derek Rivers, draft pick, Brandon King, (Christian Sam)
CB- Stephon Gilmore, J.C. Jackson, Jason McCourty, Jonathan Jones, Duke Dawson, Keion Crossen
S- Devin McCourty, Duron Harmon, Patrick Chung, draft pick, Nate Ebner (Obi Melifonwu)

LS- Joe Cardona
P- Ryan Allen
PK- TBD

I know the first question here is probably: where’s the pass rush? It’s in the linebackers.

In the playoffs, New England recorded 10 sacks. At a per-game pace, that would give them 53 over a season. This postseason, the linebackers accounted for 5.5 sacks, one went to a DB (Jonathan Jones) while the front line recorded only 3.5 sacks. Bennett helps add to the mix although at 34 it’s hard to say how much is still in the tank. A rookie could help bolster the interior combined with the presence of Adam Butler. Wise would play as an edge or interior sub rusher. Hightower may be better suited at this point in more of a rush role either standing up or playing with his hand in the ground. Otherwise, New England could use Van Noy, Simon, Rivers, a rookie or their defensive backs (particularly Chung and Jones) to disguise rush/blitz packages. In this day and age of huge-money edge rushers, this would essentially be a “moneyball” approach to the pass rushing role.

As we can see though, especially now with the addition of Michael Bennett, the Patriots would be hard-pressed to retain Trey Flowers unless they either walked away from numerous players and positions, putting significant stress on a class of draftees and low-cost free agents, or were to convert significant 2019 cap space into back-end money. While this is still possible, it looks unlikely.

Adding Suh would be a nice addition. It would fill a need at quality DT and BB has already demonstrated that he’s willing to kick the tires on “unruly” players. That out of the way, the real question is how much do you want to give a 32 year-old lineman?

To me that may actually be the the most concerning development in FA so far. That the Colts GM is actually waiting and trying to do his best Patriots imitation at getting team depth and value for his money AND has enough cap room to possibly pull it off. Still has to make those good, value-based moves…but the fact that they didn’t blow all their cap on the biggest names in the first 24 hours is a sign Chris Ballard may actually know what he’s doing. If the Browns AND the Colts become respectable contenders this year with a long… Read more »

With everything the Browns are doing, I’m getting a Schneider/Redskins vibe, in that they’re getting more big names, but aren’t necessarily improving their team for any kind of a long term plan.

Well, giving up first round picks of OBJ, I’m not sure that’s going to pan out. Going to put themselves in cap hell for future years as well. They gave up a decent guard, although they have a rookie they like. I guess we’ll see.

Very true…but the rest of that division is a mess due to self-inflicted team issues (Steelers), a sweeping changing of the guard (Ravens), and, ummm, being the Bengals. So if ever there was a good time to be in a position to challenge for the AFC North crown, this is certainly it.

If the NFL was going to come down hard on him, they would have given him at least a 1 year ban. They didn’t. They just gave him an indefinite suspension.

This allows him to apply for reinstatement in May.

He will probably still face a suspension, but it’s possible that they count the games he missed last season as part of it.

Curran suggests the Pats might be interested in Jared Cook or Austin Seferian-Jenkins
Volin suggested Timmy Jernigan, Tyler Eifert, and Pierre Garçon

Curran also agreed on Jernigan and hoped for Golden Tate

I liked Jernigan since college. Tim Jernigan is still only 26.

Yeah, but he’s been in the league for 5 years and his second team doesn’t even want him?

I know PFF isn’t the be-all-end-all, but the dude had a 49 grade last year. haha

His second team Philadelphia is up against the cap.

They almost gave Bennett away for the same reason.

I see Ndamukong Suh mention on the ticker and in some other articles as a possible Patriot.
No thanks.

You think he’s washed up or you just don’t think he’s a Patriots kinda guy? If he still has anything left and wants to win, I could get behind it.

See below.
Also,I just don’t think is a Patriots kind of guy. He could play a few more years and get by but not be a difference maker.
