Cap Scratch Fever: 5 X 5 Targets

-by Mr. Scratch

With the franchise tag deadline come and gone, the likelihood of either Trey Flowers or Trent Brown returning has diminished considerably. The just-announced deal of 3 years and $41.75M for Donovan Smith would now seem to indicate that Brown’s market will start in the $14M-AAV range, while Flowers, the only high-level defensive end not tagged or extended, could have absolutely just hit the jackpot. While I understand the comparative situations with Devin McCourty and Dont’a Hightower being allowed to test the market before returning, edge rushers are simply a different animal. What’s more problematic for New England is that virtually all the cap giants this year (Indianapolis, Buffalo, NYJ, Cleveland, Oakland, Greeen Bay) have an obvious need in that position. And, quite simply, 26-year-old top-tier DE rarely hit the market.

With that mind, here are five players that would fit well with New England going forward:

1) Adrian Amos

What do you do if (when) you lose a top DE? You sign a safety, of course.

Amos goes toward further strengthening the Patriots’ secondary and it is both a now and future move. With McCourty and Patrick Chung turning 32 this year, the Patriots most definitely have a future need for the 26-year-old Amos. For now, Amos would allow the Patriots to transition the slowing Chung into a sub-package/specialist role. He posted 73 tackles, two interceptions, nine passes defensed and one sack season last year and is a strong player versus both the pass and run. Also, the safety market should be one of few bastions of sanity in this years market due to the shear number of options there will be, including high-profile players such as Earl Thomas, Lamarcus Joyner, Tyrann Matthieu, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Landon Collins. Meanwhile, Amos was overshadowed on his own team by All-Pro Eddie Jackson, while the Bears are cap-tight and also have slot corner Bryce Callahan entering the market. That said, it is doubtful Amos comes cheap.

Contract prediction: 5 years/$45M ($10M sign bonus – $5M/$6M/$7M/$8M/$9M)
2019 cap: $7M

2) Darius Philon

The former sixth-rounder played his college ball for Bret Bielema at Arkansas. And while one Arkansas guy doesn’t necessarily replace the other, Philon would be a nice addition to the Patriots front group. After a slow start, he has tallied 8.5 sacks, 14 tackles for loss and 22 QB hits in the last two seasons. His four sacks last year ties the entire Patriots DT group combined. He has experience playing 3-tech in 40 sets and 5-tech in 30 sets giving New England added flexibility. And he just turned 25 meaning there is potential for far more upside. As an under the radar guy, his asking price shouldn’t be too cumbersome.

Contract prediction: 5 years/$28.5M ($7.5 sign bonus – $2.5M/$3.25M/$4M/$5M/$6.25M)
2019 cap: $4M

3) Michael Crabtree

Turning 32 at the beginning of the season and coming off a down year, Crabtree may be facing a suppressed market. However, a closer look at Crabtree’s season reveals a quite explainable reason for his weak finish. Up until the game where the Ravens replaced Joe Flacco with Lamar Jackson, Crabtree was on pace for 73 catches and 839 yards. Overall, his career numbers compare very favorably with the consensus top WR on the market, Golden Tate. He is only one year older than Tate and could come at a sizable price discount.

Contract prediction: 1 year, $2.5M ($31,250 per active 46 bonus, $250K bonus for 50 catches, $250K bonus for 600 yards)
2019 cap: $3.5M (LTBE)

4) Maxx Williams

There are three things I generally look for to identify the players most likely to move: teams that are tight against cap, teams with new coaches or scheme change and teams who have a lot of depth at a position. The Ravens TE situation hits on all three. Williams is the son of former Giants OC Brian Williams. He entered the league as a touted pass catcher who grabbed 32 receptions as a rookie. In his second season, he suffered a devastating knee injury. Over the last two years he has only caught 31 passes combined; however, those receptions have come on only 35 targets. Meanwhile, he has made himself into a plus blocker while also adding flexibility by playing in-line, H-back and fullback. The Ravens now have Hayden Hurst and Mark Andrews at the position with fellow TE Nick Boyle receiving a three-year extension. Additionally, Williams will be turning just 25 this season and is now two full seasons removed from his career-threatening injury.

Contract prediction: 4 years, $13.75M ($2M sign bonus – $2M/$2.5M/$3.25M/$4M)
2019 cap: $2.5M

5) T.J. Yeldon

As a rookie, Yeldon logged 182 carries as the feature back. In his second season, he moved into a split-carry back situation and logged 130 rushes while recording 50 receptions. In his third season, he became the Jaguars’ third-down back and averaged 5.2 yards per carry while catching 30 passes in only 10 games. Last year, he was second on the team with 55 receptions. Yeldon would add to New England a change-of-pace back who can amply back up the lead or third-down roles. (James White’s 94 carries last year were a career high. Rex Burkhead has never recorded more than 74 carries in a season.) Yeldon’s pass blocking and receiving skills would also allow New England to create matchup issues by playing some combination of White, Burkhead and/or Yeldon together. He also possesses the size (6-1, 223) to be effective in short yardage.

Contract prediction: 2 years, $4.5M (500K sign bonus– $1.75M/ $2.25M)
2019 cap: $2.0M

Five Interesting Potential Players for “Prove It” Deals:
1) Tavon Austin
Never the force he was supposed to be but can play inside, outside or scatback and return punts..
2) Bennie Logan
Veteran run stuffer.
3) Bilal Powell
Longtime AFC East player could provide cheap insurance at RB.
4) Marcus Cooper
A reunion with Schiano and the Rutgers gang could be what he needs.
5) Kevin White
One of the biggest draft busts ever, but still has the tools that got him picked #7.

dyims, if you’re here: I finally got an email from Greg Bedard after writing to their help@ email address. He asked if I replied to the email requesting proof of service because he couldn’t find it. Look for more trades with pick swaps – free agency not good deal, at least initially

MrScratch
Member

MrScratch

That depends. In free agency you’re often getting players who are in or hitting prime. In these trades you’re getting guys who are late prime to past prime. If you’re a team like NE who is going for it, a 34 year-old Bennett makes sense. If you’re building toward a 3 year plan, it doesn’t. As good as he is, a 30 year-old Justin Houston at $15.5M obviously doesn’t have much of a market.

Not that combine measurables tell you how a college player will perform in the NFL, but it does give a glimpse into their athleticism (or lack thereof). Bold means the best marks among the three. It would be way cool if the Pats had two sets of brothers on the team next year. I wonder if Martellus has enough left in the tank to make the team.

BoSoxJim
Member

If playing with his brother is what is most important to him and he comes cheap, I think he has enough left to play a limited number of snaps (take some of the burden off of Gronk) during the season. Then let it all loose for the playoffs.

He has had more than a year for his shoulder and body to heal. Now he just has to lay off the weed and train (which it appeared he was doing in his instagram post).

I think he could contribute, if he’s willing to play only 25 or so snaps a game. I was really looking forward to seeing him and Gronk on the field together, but it basically never happened. One game, I think. The NFL needs to get real and remove MJ from the banned substances list. I realize that there are plenty of supplements that are completely legal to sell but are still banned, so MJ’s legality is no a priori reason to stop banning it. But since it is legal, the only reason to ban it would be if it were… Read more »

The wild stat to me is the 5th round one. Did you see this?
The Patriots have drafted 56 players in the past 7 years. Of those 56 players, 2 were drafted in the 5th round. One of those two 5th round picks was a long snapper.
This year they have 12 picks. Zero 5th rounders. And tey just traded their 2020 5th in the swap for Bennett.

cfpats4

Yes on Dola coming back, it will be tough for a rookie to pickup a complicated offense and coach bb has a poor history of drafting wr position in the early rounds
Bennett is an anti- American who hates cops but huge upgrade over Clayborn who needs to be cut today

Sure it is hard for a rookie to come into this offense but his has been done before most recently with Malcolm Mitchell. David Givens did it also years ago as did Deion Branch. You can’t give up trying to draft receivers.

Although it would be nice if they got Amendola at a good price. I would rather the Patriots think a little bit bigger here. I would rather have Tate, Humphries or Brown.

Also, I am not a fan of Crabtree. The catch % for Tate and Humphries are a lot higher. Brown catch % is lower but he also averaged 17.0 YPC last year.

Just getting in and catching up on the news. First, not seeing anywhere that there is an imminent change to the OT rules, but if there were such a change, say, giving each team at least one possession regardless of the outcome of the first possession, that would be in line with the change that I wanted to see in the first place. I think it makes the second possession an exciting addition to OT, especially if the first team to possess the ball in OT scores a TD. Second, the Dolphins released Danny Amendola. Let’s see how little it… Read more »

The regular season had a sample size of 112 games. Playoffs only 8. They could go on a run of a few playoff games where the team that wins the toss loses. In fact, it happened once this year…the Saints.

Good numbers, Jim! I suppose one’s opinion would be governed by how significant that 17% number is. One could argue that that amounts to nearly 1 in 5 OT games whose outcome might be changed if OT rules were to be altered, which I don’t believe to be an insignificant number. One could also argue that those 19 games represent 0.8% of all games played over the course of those nine years (19 games divided by 2304 total regular season games, which is totally an insignificant number), and thus any OT rule change would be unimportant in the grand scheme… Read more »

In the end, the team bitching about OT rules should have taken care of business during the 4 qtrs. OT was never meant to be about being 100% fair to both teams.

If you think it’s unfair that your defense isn’t good enough to get the ball back for your offense, then you should have built a better defense.

hugo #FreeBoney
Member

And it’ll still not be perfectly “fair” – the team that gets the ball last has 4 downs every step along the way. You’ll just have the teams wanting the ball second instead of first.

LOL. Hey when you’ve got your own movie poster like the rest of the main cast…..who knows? (And a post credit scene)

Besides, it would be just like the MCU and their self deprecating humor to have Goose hack up a Fur ball and a few weapons to turn the tide. LOL

I wonder how they would do that logistically, though. They would have to ‘hire’ 20 cats at minimum to play Goose.

RE: OT rule changes…..gotta love Felger and Mazz two days after the Chiefs game ripping Pats fans for hypothetically wanting the rules to be changed if they were on the losing side of the game.

the next thing you know teams will propose that the pats aren’t allowed to get the ball in OT and the other team gets an automatic TD.

it is. i mean damn you used to win with a FG then they changed it to TD which is fine. but what whats next each team gets 10 drives

If it’s anything to do with the Pats- the rules need to be changed.

Flip the coin until the team playing the pats wins the toss… also, opposing teams need just 5 yards for a 1st down… and the pats only get 2 downs per possesion

The Broncos rule proposal is laughable:

The Broncos are pushing for an “alternative” to the onside kick “that would allow a team who is trailing in the game an opportunity to maintain possession of the ball after scoring.” They did not specify what the alternative would be, though.

MattDog #N'KealHarryToThePats

What if the team that is trailing can get the ball back only if they have their defensive players play offense? (We know BB loves practicing this at least once during training camp!)

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Steelers are close to a deal to trade receiver Antonio Brown.
The team hasn’t been identified (it’s probably not the Bills). Many believe that it will be the Raiders. According to Dulac, three teams are “still alive” in the chase for Brown.
