Cap Scratch Fever: 5 X 5 Leavers

-by Mr. Scratch

In the previous article we highlighted potential contracts for five mid-tier players to retain. These are the five mid-tier players from whom the Patriots should move on.

1) Chris Hogan

Hogan had an encouraging start to his Patriots career in 2016, registering 38 catches at 17.9 yards per reception. Last season, without Julian Edelman, he saw an increased role and was on pace for over 60 receptions until injuries limited him to nine games. This year it was hoped that he could fill in as the #1 while Edelman was out and convert into a solid #2, but that wasn’t the case. After a reasonably decent 23 catchses in the first half of the season, Hogan disappeared, snagging only 12 throws the rest of the year including four games where he was shut out. His production continued to decline in the playoffs, as Hogan made just eight receptions on 18 targets for a meager 57 yards. Turning 31 this year, his best shot on a roster is as a fourth wideout and special teamer, not something the Patriots need on the roster.

Contract prediction: 1 year, $1.5M (300K guaranteed)
2019 cap: $1.5M

2) Danny Shelton

Shelton had a solid season as a run-stuffing nose tackle, but his his complete lack of impact in the passing game led to several deactivations late in the season and during the playoffs, never a good sign for a player entering free agency. The reality is that Shelton is best suited to play the nose for a 3-4 team with rushers around him. Going to the Denver Broncos to replace Domata Peko would make perfect sense.

Contract prediction: 2 years, $ 10M ($3M sign bonus – $3M/$4M)
2019 cap: $4.5M

3) LaAdrian Waddle

Waddle has been decent depth as a backup swing tackle but this roster spot should go toward acquiring better depth and youth at the position. Marcus Cannon turns 31 this year and has fairly decent money on his deal going forward; combine this with uncertainty around Isaiah Wynn and the likely departure of Trent Brown, and offensive tackle becomes a high priority draft need.

2019 cap: $2M

4) Phillip Dorsett

Dorsett posted a decent season with 32 catches on only 42 targets. However, his production was choppy and he finished with only 9.1 yards per reception. In the divisional round, he caught four of five targets against the Chargers, then the next week caught one of three targets for 29 yards (an impressive TD in which he was even interfered with). Come the Super Bowl, he received zero targets. Whether before Josh Gordon’s arrival, during Josh Gordon’s tenure, or after Josh Gordon’s departure, Dorsett simply failed to carve out a defined role. I think he can be a solid third WR, but I just don’t know if that will happen in New England.

Contract prediction: 4 years, $18M ($2M sign bonus – $3M/$3.5M/$4.5M/$5M )
2019 cap: $3.5M

5) Stephen Gostkowski

Let me preface this by saying that at $5.88M it is ridiculous to even discuss using the franchise tag on a kicker. [ED. NOTE: The tag for kickers has been confirmed as $4.97M.] From the miss at Miami to the Super Bowl miss to Belichick having to be talked into the late field goal, the trust in Gostkowski seems to be eroding. He will turn 35 years old this year, and the Patriots last changed kickers when Adam Vinatieri was lured away in free agency at 34 years old. A known is a more comforting commodity, but there are plenty of kickers out there and most (if not all) can be had cheaper. This is a luxury for a cap rich team.

Contract prediction: 3 years, $12.75M ($3M sign bonus – $2.5M/$3.25M/$4M)
2019 cap: $3.5M

A couple years ago the Pats pounced on Gilmore (good move) although none of you thought so for at least a year it seemed. Please keep that in mind when you come out here to flame the next set of signings.

Back to Gilmore – anyone like that out there in free agency? Great expectations coming out of college, but ended up on a sucky team, so lost a bit of luster?

Keep in mind also that the Pats like to trade for players still on their rookie deals.

I’d be quite alright with the Pats NOT re-signing Jamie Collins. The defense works best when everyone does their job. That’s already been proven to not be one of Collins’ strengths.

**MOCK DRAFT 2.0** The #Patriots land a top-15 talent in the 1st round, potential Gronk successor and multiple WRs in 7-round mock draft https://expo.masslive.com/sports/g66l-2019/03/06981b83e3405/nfl-draft-2019-new-england-patriots-land-a-top15-talent-future-slot-receiver-in-7round-mock-draft-andrew-callahan.html
(I don’t post most mocks, but I was quite pleased with the results in this one. My only question was only picking one interior DL, as I think that’s the most likely double-dip.)

i thought the pats gave up on Jaimie collins, he was freelancing and uncoachable
he played every game last year and had 104 tackles, four sacks, an interception and a forced fumble in those 16 starts. my gut says no thanks, pats have moved on, we have Bentley and sam coming back and i would consider bringing back john simon for a two year deal

If Ryan Finley is sitting there at 32 and the Pat’s feel Etling is not going to develop into the QB they want for the future I can see them picking him, me personally think he’s the most accurate of them all this year.

QB RYAN FINLEY, N.C. STATE
Pro-ready, smart, dedicated, accurate and lauded for his leadership.

Finley doesn’t wow physically, will make questionable decisions and struggled mightily against the ACC’s toughest defenses. But within a quarterback class largely devoid of depth, he looks like a real candidate to land in New England. he’s already subscribed to the TB12 method.

Saw a list of free agents on nfl.com, and decided to scan it quickly and write down some totally uninformed thoughts on players that I’d like the Pats to give a long hard look at: Trey Flowers – seems the sort whose skills are being maximized in New England, and wouldn’t be elsewhere. A lot of places try to fit a square peg into a round hole. New England changes the shape of the hole when necessary. Flowers fits in New England’s hole perfectly. Wait, that didn’t come out right… Jared Cook – If Gronk comes back, he’s going to… Read more »

It’s like the combine except any draft eligible player from that school (sometimes they invite players from lower divisions…Danny Woodhead went to Nebraska’s pro day) can participate.

Gives players not invited to the combine a chance to perform. And those that didn’t do as well as they thought (or weren’t able to do things due to health reasons) get another chance to perform.

Smack, UEFA financial fair play prevents teams from spending more than they earn but doesn’t that give an advantage to teams with a bigger fan base? If they really wanted it to be fair, do what the NFL does. Put a salary cap for teams and pool the team’s earnings and divide it evenly. They are selling competition, not any one particular team.

Qatar Sports Investments is not really a private company. PSG and Man City have been loaded of money with fake sponsorships deals, plus some fraudulent schemes of players funds.

Burns I can see the Pats taking to use like Jamie Collins. He’s pretty mean and he’s shown some ability to move in space that isn’t on tape. The Pats love their LBs. Isabella, I don’t think we’d take based on past precedent.

Source: Lane Johnson restructured his contract by converting $10.045M of his base salary into a signing bonus. He’s now due a base salary of $805K for 2019. This creates close to $6.7M in cap space for the Eagles.

Does not include a pay cut. Just conversion of base salary to bonus so they can prorate it over the life of the restructured contract.

https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/draft-biggest-winners-from-the-2019-scouting-combine WR Andy Isabella You don’t have to watch much film on Isabella to realize he has speed, but just how much was the question heading into Indy. As it turns out, he has as much as anyone in this class. He blazed what was tied for the fastest 40 (4.31) with a tie for the fastest 10-yard split (1.45). Isabella then finished with the sixth-best cone (6.95) and sixth-best shuttle (4.15). You can’t ask for much more from Isabella from a production and athleticism standpoint. EDGE Brian Burns Burns was supposedly playing under 230 pounds as recently as 2017,… Read more »

I wonder if the general perception of giving a DL technician a huge FA contract might depress Trey Flowers’ market to other teams somewhat. Big money FA acquisitions still have to make a traditionally measurable splash, right? Score TDs, deflect/intercept passes, protect the QB, get sacks? Front offices likely understand the value Flowers brings, but going 6/$90m to bring in a *new* player whose contributions may be difficult to relate to the average fan could be an impending PR disaster.

I think the franchise tag on his competition hurt yesterday and outweighs that.

Before the offseason, I was holding out hope that Flowers lack of sack numbers would keep his price down. But it looks like the FOs are smart and don’t care.

I agree. They are looking at his talent in their system.

I don’t doubt FOs want him, but I wonder if there is still external pressure to bring in sexy, marketable free agents at these dollar amounts

The analytics people have taken over the NFL now. The old ways of looking at production are going the way of the dinosaur.

Look at the edge market after Flowers: – Guys who are in their mid late 30’s like Wake, Suggs and Matthews. – Guys who are looking like they may be at the end like Ansah, Derrick Morgan, Bruce irvin – Guys who have put numbers in the past but not didn’t do much last year like Preston Smith, Dante Fowler and Markus Golden. The only guy out there who had more sacks than Flowers last year is Za’Darrious Smith. And he doesn’t remotely bring everything to the table Flowers does. 26 year-old top edge defenders don’t come available often. There… Read more »

Yep! Jon Robinson says he’s a priority for Tennessee. I’d love him on the Pats. Not a traditional safety but he’s got Chung-like versatility.

How much cap room can the Patriots make and how would that increase their chances of them getting one quality free agent?

Neil X

The way BB likes to work, if he had cap space for one high priced free agent, he’d rather sign three middle-graded ones instead.

hugo #FreeBoney

Don’t think about it as middle-graded vs low graded. Its diversifying. What kind of investor only buys stock in a single company?

Oh, I don’t have a problem with it, it clearly works. I’m not bitter about Akiem Hicks, not at all.

Sure would like to keep Flowers though.

Hicks wasn’t expensive, I think the Pats just genuinely didn’t think he was that good.
But generally the Pats need to find players who’ll outperform their contracts production-wise. Whether they get that overperformance from one player or three doesn’t matter. But having 3 helps manage the risk.

I know Hicks wasn’t expensive. He was just mis-evaluated by the team. It’s rare, but it happens.

BB did try to keep him, and made one of those 11th-hour pitches, but Hicks picked Chicago. As always, free agency is a two-way street.

Was also talking about who we could cut , restructure and the like.

Example do you think we would cut Clayborn?

hugo #FreeBoney
Member

hugo #FreeBoney

I see.
Yeah, we can cut Clayborn for ~$4M. To me that’s a no-brainer because he couldn’t play on running downs. If nothing else you could give John Simon $2M, who outperformed Clayborn.
The other possibility is extending Brady. That’d bring his cap number down and create space.
I don’t think they have any restructure candidates. McCourty and Gronk are in their last year. Gilmore is the only one really.

Do you thank Gronk plays for 9 Million this year?

hugo #FreeBoney

I don’t see why not. They don’t exactly have a line of alternatives.

dp73

47 receptions ? They wanted to trade him last year?
Not should he is on as solid of ground with the Patriots as fans think he is on.

IMO, I don’t think they pay him 9M . I am hope I am wrong.

Wouldn’t you trade in Gronks 9M for part of Flowers salary?

hugo #FreeBoney
Member

hugo #FreeBoney

I know he’s overpaid relative to his numbers and was inconsistent but down the final stretch he delivered.
Keeping him around is less about him being good and more about the alternatives being bleak. Onboarding skill position players is long term process. New WRs and TEs are not going to make a big impact in year 1.
At least if you lose Flowers, your replacements on the DL will be fully integrated a few weeks into the season.

We well see but I think the overall loss of talent level on the defense will outweigh the gains on offense.

He isn’t open to a pay cut. A restructure doesn’t have to include a paycut. Just making some part of his 2019 salary as a signing bonus will reduce the cap this year.

C’s shot 51% from the floor and 40% from 3. Guys found the open man and were active on defense, handing the Warriors their worst home court loss of this era. I can only conclude that the Celtics chose last night to debut their super-secret anti-bad juju force field for Kyrie to wear so that his teammates wouldn’t feel depressed when he was on the court.

i think we match up well against them (for the most part) and they were missing thompson – just one of those games – wouldn’t surprise me at all if a loss follows tonight – not being negative, just realistic

Yeah, I’m encouraged to see another good Hayward game and feel like he looked a lot lighter on his feet last night, but my only real takeaway is that when shots are falling everything looks better.

if you look at the minutes, it appears that brown is close to bumping morris back to the bench

JLStokes

Brown has played consistently well since before the All Star break. He’s aggressive on offense and defense and he’s found his shot. I think he should stay in his “James Harden-like” role as sixth man. Come of the bench and finish the game with the rest of the starters.

i think i prefer hayward off the bench and brown starting (if morris is coming out of the starting lineup)

JLStokes

I think they both benefit from coming off the bench. They can be as aggressive as they want with Tatum/Irving on the bench.

The Antonio Brown sweepstakes are heating up: Sources say the #Steelers have begun telling teams that this is moving quickly and to give their best offers ASAP. This could wrap up soon. 3 new teams have jumped in the last 48 hours. Meanwhile, #Jets, #AZCardinals are out.

That was the best I’ve seen the Celtics all season. Actually, they looked like a better version of last year’s playoff squad. Marcus Smart is the leader of this team; when they follow his lead with similar energy/effort they play well. Nice to see Hayward looking decisive. Once again the young guns Tatum and Brown both led the way offensively and defensively as it should be. I’ll even give Kyrie credit, he was remarkably restrained in his play and I thought it benefited the Celtics greatly. Marcus Morris seemed to take less shots which was nice since he’s struggling. Baynes… Read more »

Who said anything about Rozier? I said that he fits the offense that the Celtics want to run better than Kyrie. That’s not talking about leadership/effort/energy. Those are two different things. I maintain what I said is true. Rozier is struggling offensively, but he generally pulls back when his shots not dropping and passes the ball more. Kyrie will still keep chuckin’ the ball even if he’s off that night.

If you’re going to reference things I said, actually quote me next me.You’re find that I’m still right (unless it’s Dobson-related. Man that was bad).

I disagree. He’s the leader, it’s HIS team. It’s because he defers to Durant on offense that the entire team can function at the level they do. That’s great leadership. If Kyrie did the same for Tatum, I think that’d be amazing for the Celtics.

Trey Flowers It’s not just that the New England Patriots elected not to use the franchise tag on Flowers, it’s that Lawrence, Clark, Clowney and Ford all did get franchised, leaving the unfranchised Flowers as the top free-agent defensive end on the market. Even in a year in which the draft is loaded with defensive-line prospects, players who can disrupt things at the line of scrimmage and get after the quarterback are in demand, and Flowers should do well. He turns 26 in August, plays every position on the defensive line and has won the Super Bowl twice. Don’t be… Read more »
