Cap Scratch Fever: 5 X 5 Keepers

-by Mr. Scratch

The Patriots would certainly like to keep most, if not all, of the players from their Super Bowl LIII-winning team, but that is never feasible.Decisions will have to be made, and in some cases – I would consider Trey Flowers, Trent Brown and Jason McCourty to be such – cap considerations are too overwhelming for them all to return. Here are the five players that I believe are worth taking a run at.

1) Malcom Brown

Brown was poor in the pass rush last season but functioned as a solid run stopper. He’s been a bit of a disappointment since coming into the as the 32nd pick in the 2015 draft. But there are things that point to good reason for a return. First of all, the Patriots seem to trust him as a four-year starter and heavy rotational snaps player; Through those four seasons, he’s been very durable, playing in 60 of 64 potential games. Brown was also a young draft pick; he’s only turning 25 this year, indicating that there could be a next level. And any future production should come at a reasonable cost.

Contract prediction: 3 years, $11.75M ($3M sign bonus – $2M/$3M/$3.75M)
2019 cap hit: $3M

2) Cordarelle Patterson

Playing wideout, filling in at running back and serving as a dangerous kick returner, Patterson had a solid year in New England. He recorded the best catch rate and yards per catch of his career, albeit on only 28 targets. At the moment, Patterson is the Patriots’ only “big” WR at six feet, two inches. The Patriots sought ways last year to get the ball in his hands and take advantage of his playmaking skills. Just two years removed from a 50+ catch season and with a full year and offseason under his belt, a breakout year could be ahead for the 28-year-old.

Contract prediction: 3 years/$ 10M ($1.5M sign bonus – $2.25M/$2.75M/$3.5M)
2019 cap: $2.75M

3) Jonathan Jones

While Jones essentially lost his job due to the emergence of J.C. Jackson late in the year, he still posted a quality season with three interceptions, seven passes defended and 56 tackles. Jones played 515 snaps for the Patriots during the regular season and was a key contributor taking on faster WR in the playoffs. As a restricted free agent who went undrafted, New England will need to tender him at a second round level, a price that will likely be around $3.1M, to scare off potential suitors. The team can see over the next season if a longer-term deal can be worked out, but Jones may take his chances considering the booming slot corner market.

2019 cap: $3.1M

4) John Simon

Simon was a quality addition after having sat out the first month of the season following his release from Indianapolis. As a veteran edge setter and pass rusher who can drop in zone, he took on an increasing workload into the playoffs. He’s a quality rotational player who will likely come at a low price and provides experience and depth.

Contract prediction: 2 years/$5M ($2M sign bonus – $1M/$2M)
2019 cap: $2M

5) Ryan Allen

The unsung hero of the Super Bowl, downing the Rams inside their own 6-yard line three times, Allen has been a solid and effective (if unspectacular) punter. It’s doubtful there will be much of a market for his services and he should be easy to retain.

Contract prediction: 3 years/$6M ($600K sign bonus – $1.4M/$1.8M/$2.2M)
2019 cap: $1.6M

Singularly unimpressive statistics here. Of course he was the best Patriot RB last year. And being ranked 20th, that means that most teams have an RB bette rthan him.

They’re now 3 back in the loss column for one series w/ HCA. They’re 14-16 on the road. 11 of their last 18 are on the road. Where they presently sit, they’re looking at 3 road series against Indiana/ Philadelphia, and then Toronto and Milwaukee (or vice versa). The idea of a big playoff run is pretty fanciful.

In response to the discussion down below about leaders in the NBA: Definitely agree that KG was a true leader, as was Tim Duncan. I think you could also make the argument that both Pierce and Tony Parker were leaders as well. It’s interesting how the team culture behind those two teams/eras fostered a certain atmosphere. I think the last 5 years of the NBA have seen a significant shift from “team chemistry” type teams… to “max talent” teams… If I had to pick an under the radar player who seems to have a lot of leadership qualities- I’d say… Read more »

Hayward is a shell of his former self. Brown has turned it on lately, but was a disappointment most of the season. Rozier thinks he’s a starter, so he chooses to mail it in when coming off the bench. Baynes, their only muscle, has been out most of season. Morris started hot, but has gone back to his norm the last couple of months.

NewEnglandBlight

Chris Forsberg made a solid comment about the Cs struggles. If they made a run at the Finals, it would be difficult to blow the team up. If they lose to Sixers in Rd 1, it’s easy.

I think getting Baynes back will help, even though it will only be 15-20 mins. He adds physicality they lack.

Felger and Mazz had an amusing back and forth on Friday, where Mazz gave a solid gold audio clip they will no doubt replay at opportune times in the future.

Felger asked a hypothetical – if Kyrie went to Ainge and said he would extend with Boston only if Stevens wasn’t back, what you you do? Mazz immediately responded, “fire Stevens” which caught Felger by surprise. They guessed Ainge wouldn’t do that, but it started the conversation around what’s more important in the NBA, talent or coaching. Everyone agreed it was talent.

MasterAndCommander

MasterAndCommander

I see the point but, even with this weird season aside, Stevens has shown he can work near miracles, particularly with teams still lacking true superstar talent. Is he partly to blame this year? Sure mainly with not fixing the chemistry issue. But I wouldn’t give up on I’m yet.

Rondo and Lebron are also taking blame for not playing defense.
I really miss Kobe, he could be a harsh for his team mates, but he did everything he could to win. The team always looked to his intensity as an example.
Lebron is amazing, maybe the best athlete NBA ever had, but i don’t see him do “everything” he can to win. And play some D would be a great example for his younger team mates.
Ingram might be the only one effective on both sides of the court.

They could have some problems in the off-season luring FA. If LeBron can’t will a team just into the playoffs, then I don’t know if many guys are going to want to go there as they are constituted. Unlike the Celtics who can go either way, they are all in on LeBron. I think a trade that would make a lot of sense for both sides would be Ingram, Ball and their pick (assuming it’s not top 3 ) to Detroit for Andre Drummond. I missed his reps in space. Really curious about that.

Yeah, they came back from commercial break right after he ran it. They showed Bosa’s but not his. Maybe it will be online later.

I was curious how Polite would jump and run in the agility drills. I really dislike his tape but I was curious how he tests.

He’s not going to make his living stopping the run. That’s for sure.

I was looking forward to seeing him test as well.

Sweat slowed to 4.46 on his second run. There is still a chance 🙂

The official time might be in the 4.5s. Well, if you believe the simulcams. It showed him being beat by OBJ who ran an official 4.43.

Whatever it is, the Pats still won’t have a chance to get him (not that they had a real chance before the combine).
