Unbandaged: the Patriots returning from IR (and other such lists)

-by DNOMN8R314

With a new league year comes a resetting of rosters, and players who spent the 2018 season on their team’s reserve lists will return to the active roster or join the free agent pool. In Foxboro, 13 Patriots saw their season end thanks to injury; most of these players will have a spot on New England’s training camp roster in 2019, but what their roles may be can only be determined in time. Here’s a quick synopsis of each of them.

Darren Andrews, WR: One of New England’s 2018 UDFAs, Andrews had torn his ACL in November 2017 and so spent the entire season on the non-football injury list. A slot receiver at UCLA, Andrews projects to at minimum be camp competition for the role.

Ja’Whaun Bentley, LB: Bentley was selected out of Purdue in the fifth round and earned his way into the starting lineup, but tore his bicep in Week 3 against Detroit and was placed on IR. Having shown himself to be more than a two-down run specialist last preseason, he should be in line to reclaim that starting job.

Braxton Berrios, WR: The other rookie slot receiver who received a medical redshirt, Berrios was placed on IR during final roster cuts. And like Andrews, Berrios will compete for the slot receiving role in this year’s camp.

Jeremy Hill, RB: After a strong preseason, the ex-Bengal made the 53-man roster but was lost to a torn ACL in the third quarter of the season. Hill is now a free agent, but is a possibility to return as the Patriots do not have a “big back” in their stable.

Cody Hollister, WR: For the second straight season, Hollister has spent the season on a New England reserve list due to injury, this time his back. Hollister (who as a prospect drew comparisons to Chris Hogan) is an ERFA, so if the Patriots decide to tender him, he will be in camp this year.

Jacob Hollister, TE: Hollister was placed on IR before the Divisional Round after matching his 2017 season total with four catches in 2018. He has the athleticism to be a playmaker at tight end, but thus far has been unable to remain healthy.

Ryan Izzo, TE: Izzo technically made the roster last year, but was placed on IR a day after roster cuts. After showing positive traits last preseason, he has a good chance to improve and possibly emerge in 2019.

Ulrick John, T: Another Patriot who played solidly last August, John tore a tendon in his foot in the final preseason game and was placed on IR. He’s now a free agent, so he will only return if the Patriots want him back for tackle depth, where they currently lack veterans aside from Marcus Cannon.

Riley McCarron, WR: McCarron played only in the season opener against Houston, where he caught no passes and muffed a punt. Since he eventually was placed on New England’s practice squad injured reserve list, the Patriots would need to have offered him a futures contract for him to remain with the team in 2019. As they did not, he becomes a free agent.

Eric Rowe, CB: Rowe’s New England tenure had its highs and lows, but his 2018 was a downer, losing first his starting job, then (due to a groin injury) his roster spot. Rowe is a pending free agent, and with a stabilized Patriots secondary over the end of the year, his chances of a return are a question mark.

Christian Sam, LB: A sixth-round pick in 2018, the former Sun Devil also received a “medical redshirt” at roster cuts. Sam fits the modern mold of a smaller, more athletic linebacker, a type of player the Patriots have recently lacked, so it will be interesting to see how he progresses from last year’s camp.

Brian Schwenke, G: Schwenke has already been re-signed by New England on a one-year contract, providing veteran depth on the interior line. His chances of a roster spot are about the same as last year’s.

Isaiah Wynn, T: Last year’s first New England first-rounder, Wynn tore his Achilles during the preseason and was lost for the year. But with Trent Brown in line for a sizable paycheck in free agency, Wynn has the inside track to step in at left tackle and protect Tom Brady’s blindside long-term.

@ezlazar
Replying to @ezlazar
Again, Trent was great for them but for example @PFF had him graded out as the 32nd best tackle in the NFL. Out of tackles that played at least 50% of their teams snaps, he was tied for 42nd in allowed pressures (35).

He was good. But not as good as some of the narratives.

Do the Pats use the Tag this year. If so, on who? Discuss.

dp73

I can’t see it.

They do have to step up and give Flowers a fair contract which I think they are prepared to do.

“Why not DE Trey Flowers or OT Trent Brown?” The thinking is that their franchise-tag numbers would be too high for the team’s liking.-Mike Reiss

Prediction: The Patriots will not use the tag on Gostkowski and will sign him to an extension. — Mike Reiss

hugo #FreeBoney

I think if they don’t tag him, they lose him in free agency. Bill has shown in the past he’s willing to pay a lot up front in a 1 year deal for a centerpiece on defense. Then they buy themselves a year to bolster the DL with draft picks/cost-controlled talent.

Trent Brown would love to re-sign with the Pats. Wonder if he’ll take a team discount. Would be good to make his contract rich with playing time incentives and weight incentives to make sure he stays in shape and stays interested . Don’t want him to disappear if he gets paid.

Is it true that ‘NLTBE’ incentives dont count against the cap?

Jdog Lemon Head

I read that LTBE count against the cap for the year they are scheduled, but if LTBE is NOT achieved, then there’s a credit the following year.

NLTBE doesn’t count against the cap, but if the NLTBE is achieved then it counts against the cap the following year.

Late round picks with a shot at their first big contract are almost always going to the highest bidder. He had a very good year but with his injury history and struggles against smaller pass rushers I’m ok with him leaving and finding a backup for Wynn.

Draft needs as far as I’m concerned…..in no particular order: WR, TE, DL, OL, DB. Take a QB ONLY if he is worth it, if not, then next year. Once FA, any trades, cuts, and retirements are done, I’ll set a priority order.

If he added LB, that would be every position on the field except RB.

With 12 picks it would probably be hard to go through a draft and not get almost one of everything.

hugo #FreeBoney

K and P are both offseason needs, really. Gostkowski is a FA. Allen is a FA. Its likely you’re drafting a replacement for one of them.

MasterAndCommander
Editor
Free agent
MasterAndCommander

Something tells me they may get LBs via FA. Or other needs ma¥ be filled that way. So puting LBs on the list is possible after FA but before the draft. And it seems at least one or 2 college UDFAs may make it.

Jdog Lemon Head
Member

Jdog Lemon Head

Remember, we still have Bentley who was on IR. He seemed to show promise before getting put on IR. That’s like adding a new LB. Same with Sam. The Foxboro Flu is like having extra draft picks for the following year.

MasterAndCommander
Editor
Free agent
MasterAndCommander

yes, that was another reason i didn’t add LB yet. just didn’t mention it. Hopefully we find out sooner rather than later about how well they recovered from the “flu”.

MrScratch
Member

MrScratch

This is a prime example of why “draft needs” in Feb is difficult.

If they retain Hightower and resign Simon with Van Noy, Roberts and Bentley returning and Sam and Munson as depth– LB isn’t much a need. If they cut HT and lose Simon, all of a sudden it’s a hole– which they may or not fill in FA.

I always expected him to go in the 2nd round. The Patriots would use him as they use Trey Flowers.

Allen is ~280 and not a bendy, speed rusher. He’ll probably kick inside on passing downs.

If the #Patriots lose Trent Brown in free agency, 2018 first-round pick Isaiah Wynn is the perfect insurance policy. Here’s a reminder of why the Pats took Wynn with their first selection a year ago

https://www.clnsmedia.com/lazar-patriots-backup-plan-place-trent-brown-bolts-free-agency

If the don’t see Wynn as a LT than Cannon could move over to LT. Probably not the best option but something they could do until they get a long termed option. Such as Mitch Hyatt 6’6″ 318 Sr. Clemson. Just a thought.

—-> @PFF_Patriots Ja’Whaun Bentley looks to have a big sophomore year as he returns from a torn bicep that ended his rookie season. LB JA’WHAUN BENTLEY, NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS The fifth-round pick looked destined for a big role in the middle of the Patriots defense after an excellent preseason campaign that earned the sixth-best coverage grade (85.8) among all NFL linebackers with 30-plus coverage snaps in the preseason. To perform as well as he did in coverage – a facet that’s vitally important for linebackers in today’s NFL – was impressive enough in the preseason, but he continued that performance… Read more »

DI MAURICE HURST, OAKLAND RAIDERS Hurst entered the draft as not only the highest ranked interior defender in the class but the third-highest player on our big board, so to say that the Raiders got a bargain when they selected him in the fifth round would be an understatement. Entering the draft, there was no other interior player that came close to matching Hurst’s skillset, and his four-year college grades are still unlike anything we’ve seen before at the defensive… Read more »

If Gronk comes back do we expect him to do better than did in 2018 in terms of games 13, Receptions 47 and TD’s 3 or will he continue to go down?

He was a very valuable member of this team in the playoffs. Especially in the run blocking.

Some teams may sign him as a backup QB. But…what about a team using him as a jack of all trades like Patterson?

At this point he is a backup IMO untill be proves on the field that he is more than that.

He has been out a long time.

I wouldn’t pay 20 million for a back up QB.

???????????????

I don’t think he wanted to play in the AAF which I think he should have.

20 M ? If he were offered a backup role In Carolina for backup money I think he should do it.

There are a lot of factors in signing Colin Kaepernick. I just think his numbers are NFL worthy.

Colin Kaepernick has equal to or slightly better numbers than Brian Hoyer.

Is that supposed to help his case? How many reporters are around Brian Hoyer after a loss? He’s too much of a distraction to be a backup and I don’t believe he’s good enough to be a starter.

I agree with the statement below that if he wants to get back playing, he should have signed with an AAF team to get back in playing shape. Did he have a chance to play in the CFL?

How’d he look the year he went to the Super Bowl? Sometimes it’s about the supporting cast and, especially, the coaching staff around you. Look how good QBs have looked under McVay (SB notwithstanding) and without him.

You did not comment on any of the stats I posted.

I am not saying the Patriots should sign him . I don’t believe I posted that anywhere.

Is Brain Hoyer starter worthy?

So here we are , on Hockey Day in America Sunday, and my wife and daughters are out wedding dress shopping, leaving me home to rest the knee and watch hockey. Sweet. Hoping the NYR beat PIT because 1) NYR is so far back they won’t make the playoffs (barring a miracle) and 2) PIT is outside of the playoffs right now and I want Sid the Cry Baby to hit the golf courses in April. PIT is fighting perrenial doormats CAR and BUF for the last spot.

Sticking with the Panthers – check out the new coaching role for Sam Mills III – https://www.panthers.com/news/panthers-announce-coaching-moves

Smart move by them. Ernie Adams and Nick Caserio do this from the booth for the Pats.

Different type of QB than Brady obviously, so not sure backup here makes much sense considering offense would need to change. Panthers is my guess.

I think Kaepernick made a big mistake in turning down a chance to play and do well in the AAF.

Football players play. This would have been an opportunity to earn his was back into the NFL.

Panthers signed Reid, so no big deal kneeling-wise, and Kaep plays similar to Cam, so they can throw short $ at him to be backup (since he just got paid)

MrLucky

He likely would have gone there and sucked (like he did the last couple years he was in the NFL). Not sold that he actually ever wanted to play again. He makes more money being a fake victim than a below average QB.

Why did NFL settle then?

MrLucky

Would have looked like bullies and the publicity for the NFL would have been terrible if they dragged out the court case. Easier to just settle and make it go away.

And would have taken the focus off a bit on free agency and the draft.

Kaep had the league dead to rights on collusion

MrLucky

With what evidence? Does he have texts from the owners colluding not to sign him? Because if he did they would have 100% been released to the public by now. People forget how bad he was his last year and was obviously too much of a distraction to be a backup anywhere.

Yes, supposedly emails or texts – people in the know, knew last fall – they were just waiting for the fallout – with the deal struck, nobody is allowed to say anything which protects the league

is it just me or does it seem like it should be “well yeah obviously its collusion… we’re not signing this guy into our league because he’s an average QB who brings attention to the league in an unwanted way” not saying the Kaep is wrong for advocating for his causes… just that… shouldn’t the league have every right to not hire a guy because they dont like his beliefs/public activities? i mean it’d be no different than if i decided to go file collusion charges against strip clubs because they refused to hire me because i advocated for male… Read more »
