Super Bowl LIII Prop Bets Results

-by DNOMN8R314

The Blitz for Six is complete, fittingly thanks to a defense that blitzed frequently.

As the Patriots and their fandom move on to the Something That Rhymes for Seven, we at NEPFF close out the 2018-19 season with the results of the annual prop bets contest. This year had a low turnout: aside from me, my dad, and my sister, only seven entries were submitted. But the winner was one of those seven, as Jdog Lemon head scored 21 points to lead the field and come out with a victory. Well done.

Some highlights and observations:

  • As expected, each NEPFF regular who entered picked the Patriots to win. The only person to pick the Rams was my dad (listed in the results, linked here, as “Kitchen Contrarian”), and he only did so because he knew I was collecting entries from fans who would almost certainly pick New England.
  • All of us picked relatively high-scoring games. As such, my sister (listed as “The Netflix Fiend”) scored the points for closest guess of all four quarters, and was the only one to predict a scoreless first. Interestingly, she was the lowest overall scorer, with 11 points.
  • Nine of ten entries split teams for “first touchdown” and “first field goal.” One entry – mine – took New England for both, which is what happened in the game.
  • Nine of us went with Matthew Slater and chose heads. The coin landed tails, giving a point to my dad. The rest of us got our revenge when the first beer commercial was for Bud Light, canceling out that point.
  • Seven people guess that Tom Brady would be named MVP. One (my dad) guessed Jared Goff, one said Rob Gronkowski, and one (me again) tabbed Julian Edelman.

We’re on to 2019, but we can still enjoy this one. Enjoy it.

Why does that qualify as being inside their heads? We’re their main competition.

So they’d trade Brown to the Chiefs? Chargers? Colts? Texans? I can understand not trading him in the Division, or not wanting to trade him in the entire conference, but to say “not in the Division or to the Patriots” is sad. Steelers are just plain scared of the Pats.

Yes. Because the Pats are better/more dangerous than all of those teams.

HunterCenter

I don’t see it. To say they would trade Brown to the Chiefs but not the Pats is ludicrous. Get max trade value for Brown and don’t worry about it. One player does not make a team regardless (except in the NBA, of course).

Pats didn’t want to trade Jimmy G within the conference so they supposedly took less to send him to the NFC. Steelers would be smart to trade him to the NFC or maybe a another team in the AFCE to help the other teams beat the Pats.

HunterCenter

sure, but you don’t come out and actually SAY that. you just don’t take offers from those teams. For the Steelers to actually name the Pats is humorously sad for them.

Yeah…I agree with Hugo. Steelers ALREADY struggle to beat the Pats. Giving them AB is basically conceding the AFC for the next 2-3 years…again.

I like Albert Breer but he did not name his source here and do not know how far up that source is. It could be another writer in Pittsburgh for all we know.

How does Demps firing affect Celtics pursuit of AD, if at all? Seemed like Ainge had the inside track with him.

MrScratch
Member

It’s interesting. Were they upset that he wanted out? Upset that he wasn’t traded at the deadline? Or do they not trust Demps to make the right move this summer?

Pauly

ESPN is reporting (I know, I know) that Gayle Benson is pissed at the trade demand and the resulting saga and is furious at “outside forces” dictating how the team moves forward. I don’t know if that’s actually true obviously but that seems hard to jive with firing Demps as a result. Unless she thought Demps fed the behavior that led to the trade demand with over a year left on his contract or didn’t react harshly enough to the player & agent involved. Not saying Demps is a good GM, but he kinda seems like the fall guy here.

hugo #FreeBoney
Member

hugo #FreeBoney

There has to be a fall guy. It’s a really ugly situation for the Pelicans right now. They have a player who doesn’t want to be there. The fans are booing every time he touches the ball.

MrScratch
Member
Free agent
MrScratch

The crazy thing in all of this is that Pelicans have a +0.8 PD. Better than the Clippers, Lakers and Kings. At one point they were +2.0.

Payton missed extensive time, Mirotic missed a bunch of games returned and went right back down and then Davis missed time.

And they still should be the 8th seed. Their struggles have really been injuries… and coaching.

Pauly
Member

It could alter what the team values in a return on the trade, but certainly not the timing–he’s with them the rest of the year and won’t be next year.

hugo #FreeBoney
Member
Free agent
hugo #FreeBoney

Demps was always going to be fired eventually. He’s been a horrid GM. If the Pelicans hadn’t had such bad rosters around Davis, it never would have come to this in the first place. Burning bridges with Davis was probably just what got him fired now as opposed to at the end of the season.
I think the main factor in Boston’s pursuit of AD is what it was before – what Kyrie and AD decide to do with their careers. If they want to team up in Boston, it’ll happen. If they don’t, it won’t.

MrScratch
Member
Free agent
MrScratch

I don’t know how much Ainge had the inside track, really. The only reason that may have been the case is because NO wasn’t taking a chance on Porzingis and nobody wants what the Lakers are peddling. And there were no other known suitors. This all allows the table to be set and Davis (at that point) may demand a particular location and NO hands could become tied.

When the off-season comes around a bunch of teams will be opened up with expiring cap space and more certainty to where draft picks fall.

Pauly

So AD left the Pelicans arena with his agent during the game last night to get an MRI. Serious question: am I seriously old or is that as messed up as it sounds to me? I mean, he got injured. He needed an MRI. He shouldn’t play until they have one to make sure there is no major damage. That’s all fine. But…you leave during the game with your agent to get the MRI right then and there? WTF! Sit on the bench with an icepack and watch your teammates finish out the game and get your MRI the next… Read more »

This might be a dumb question but why didn’t the Pelicans send him for an MRI?

hugo #FreeBoney

Here’s the situation. The Pelicans want to sit AD for the rest of the season. AD apparently doesn’t want to play the rest of the season either.
However, the NBA is barring the Pelicans from sitting him. The team prob just wants him to get diagnosed with something so they can get it over with.

Pauly

Ok I get that but, during the game? I guess I’m just used to all the injured NFL players where the post-game injury report is “an MRI has been scheduled for tomorrow.” I mean if there was a sport where you’d want an MRI result ASAP it would be football–not basketball.

You just mentioned two separate things. I don’t think Anthony Davis is sh*tting on his fans by requesting a trade and then being upset when it doesn’t happen. He has just as much right to career advancement as you or me.

do you refuse to work when you don’t get your way?

actually, no need to answer that, you probably do. after whining about your “rights”. Here’s some advice, which I know you don’t want: that’s a very poor career advancement strategy.

MrLucky

If a player requests a trade the team shouldn’t be penalized by benching his ass or telling him to stay away. Obviously they’d be better off just tanking now. If I was the coach I’d play him 1 minute every game then take him out.

hugo #FreeBoney

hugo #FreeBoney

The NBA won’t let the Pels sit AD because they have an obligation to protect the investment fans make in tickets.
Chris from Baton Rouge bought his partial season tix at a price that reflected Anthony Davis being on the court. Now he can’t re-sell them for a good price.

Pauly
Member

But that’s the stupidity of the NBA–so you only fine a player $50K for publicly stating he wants to be traded and creating the problem but you’ll fine the team a ton more for then not playing him because now they (very reasonably) HAVE to protect his trade value and keep him from being a lockerroom cancer? You can’t run a league like that.

Pats had internal discussions about (Jamie) Collins prior to the trade deadline. Don’t know how much further it got. Think he’d at least be on their radar in that scenario.

I’m surprised because JC signed a pretty big contract and the Pats traded him because he was freelancing and that they didn’t want to pay him.

This could also be a Patrick Chung like situation.

hugo #FreeBoney

Apples and oranges though. Chung was always a good teammate. He just had growing to do and got to the Pats ahead of them having a good fit for him..
On the other hand, Collins was poor and supposedly insubordinate. Now he’s rich and we expect him to act better?

Pauly

Did anyone from the Pats ever say it was freelancing that caused the trade? My recollection is that allegation came solely from one Lombardi tweet and he wasn’t part of the Pats at that time. So maybe he was talking out of his *** again.

@ZackCoxNESN On @PardonMyTake, Kyle Van Noy said the Rams only ran one new play in the Super Bowl — only one wrinkle the Patriots weren’t expecting.
They’ve been doing the same things over and over all year, and getting praised for how simple yet good their offense is. What changed?
Like Seattle a few years ago with the legion of boom. They do the same thing over and over and it’s a good thing. Until they lose then they’re suddenly stupid.

Semi related but I found it interesting watching Turning Point last night. That opening catch down the sideline to Gronk on the game winning drive wasn’t even a play in the Pats playbook. Josh drew it up on the fly after seeing how the Rams were selling out for the run when Sony was in the backfield. That’s pretty cool to create a new play in the 4th quarter of the SB in a tie game

Moreso than a big name, star WR, the Pats need 5 guys who can win one-on-one.
If Gronkowski retires, you’ve got Edelman and White. That’s 2/5 spots filled. Say you get Beckam? So what. The other team’ll just bracket Edelman, help on OBJ, and you’re throwing to Cordarelle Patterson or Braxton Berrios.
Rather they look at some mid-level to min-salary guys and have enough options to fill out the depth chart.

Yeah, I tend to agree. Flashy WR’s are always fun in theory but they cost a lot and usually come with issues. I was looking at it more financially. The Giants just signed him to a huge extension last year. His signing bonus was already paid out. So the Giants would have a huge dead cap hit to trade him. The team trading for him gets him under contract for like another 4 years at a set price. So if I’m the Giants, I want a haul for him

If he’s gtg, I don’t see why not. He’s a different type of back than both Michel and Burkhead which allows for a pretty good change up mid-game. Plus, he can catch the ball decently as well. Add in his special teams value and I think he makes the team if he’s healthy.

I wasn’t saying anything other than how Hoyer helped. He’s not a great talent, but he’s experienced, knows the system, and is quite cheap. Getting a great talent in the draft will be expensive pick-wise and whoever comes in will probably require a year or two to get up to speed. I don’t know if the trade-off is worth it.

“getting someone better then Hoyer ”
I didn’t say great talent.
There is nothing wrong with striving to get better depth.
If Ryan Finley were there in the #3rd round I would draft him.

rondo723

Would Finley really be better than Hoyer at filling in for Brady next season, though?

dp73
Member

Probably not. But in year two , maybe.

What if the Patriots never drafted Brady because they had just signed Bledsoe to a long term deal and had John Friesz and Michael Bishop.

It’s about depth and striving to get better.

rondo723
Member

It’s about picking your spots, too. They took Brady in the 6th round, it’s not like they were prioritizing him for depth reasons. Given the rest of the roster, a later-round pick at QB again makes sense to me.

Hoyer is a solid back-up. Has 37 career starts, 83.2 PR, 59.3 Comp%, 2.1 Int%. And is a VERY reasonable price.

Chances that you get a guy who could step in for a few games and do better aren’t great unless you are selecting him in the 1st or 2nd round. Even then you’ll have a development curve and are then really “grooming” that player asa replacement.

I don’t think anybody, including Brady, knows how long he will play.

How can the Pats have only $15 million in cap space? I thought they didn’t pay their players. Got re-do TB12 and get his number down by $10 million or so.

Neil X
Member

Really, who are they paying besides TB12, Gronk, DMC and Gillmore? The top 5 players on the team (the four above plus Zeus) take up 40% of the cap. Is that exceptionally high?

MrScratch
Member

MrScratch

I don’t get it. Dee Ford at 28 is a tag because he was #1 in pressures. Trey flowers at 26 is no tag even though he was #2 in pressures?

Neil X
Member

Neil X

Yeah,t hat is an inane article. I think they are considering available cap space, and believe the Pats won’t have any to FT Flowers.

BoSoxJim
Member
Free agent
BoSoxJim

What he’s saying is that if Flowers tag eats up all their cap space (considering everything else they need to accomplish), then tagging Flowers may not be the best course of action.

KC has over $10MM more in cap space next season (as is stands right now) so they can afford to tag Ford.

Of course, a bunch of cap space gymnastics can occur between now and then.

MrScratch
Member
Free agent
MrScratch

That’s the thing, the cap is malleable and not all situations are even remotely similar. A FT player is a FT player. Teams will work around that. If they’re making a case that he’s not a FT player, that’s one thing. But an argument to not FT a FT player is kind of silly.

I can’t speak for anyone else. Personally, the fun of following the draft doesn’t really have anything to do with which players the Pats take or don’t take. It’s interesting to look at the players in a vacuum.
Besides, having thumbnail sketches in the back of your mind of players who don’t end up on the Pats makes it easier to follow non-Pats games, or what’s going on across from the Pats on gameday.

Calipatsfan3473

Seems like there have been quite a few players that have been dis-invited to the Combine. My question is- why invite them in the first place?

The NFL is barring players with DV concerns from the combine. That way they can look tough on DV, without actually doing anything consequential.

Jaylon Ferguson got dis-invited because of a fight at a McDonald’s four years ago. He was convicted of “simple battery”.

It might be time to set sights on the next tier of TE prospects, as Hockenson is being mocked as high as #8 and Fant has appeared in the low 1st round. The fact that they’re on the map in a big way doesn’t bode well for the Pats at #32. Dawson Knox? Irv Smith?

FWIW, these are my top 6 right now (subject to change):

1. Hockenson, Iowa

2. Fant, Iowa
3. Smith, Alabama

5. Isaac Nauta, Georgia

6. Donald Parham, Stetson

In matchups with the Bucks, Raptors and Sixers so far this season, Boston is a combined 6-2 — including 3-0 against Philadelphia after Boston won there Tuesday night with Irving sidelined because of a knee injury.

Toronto, meanwhile, is 5-6, and Philadelphia is a dismal 1-7.

Ok but Gost himself played at Memphis. Not exactly a cold weather city and he adapted pretty well. You’re probably right but the difference in kickers seems to be minimal. However on a team like the Pats, that .01% difference could be the difference in winning the SB.
