Jdog Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Fortunate Events

-by Jdog Lemon head

[NOTE: Don’t forget to submit your SB LIII prop bets!]

I haven’t contributed any articles to our fan site but I figured I probably should contribute at least once, especially since I’m one of a few here at ground zero. Since I enjoy reading of other people’s game day experiences such as DP, GoPats, etc, I thought I would also share my experiences.

NFL Experience and Opening Night (Formerly Known as Media Day)

It’s a once in a lifetime event to have the Super Bowl in your city AND have your team being one of the participants. Not that I needed a ton of convincing, but my wife kept urging me to go to every event we can afford to go to and to get tickets ASAP.

Once the Patriots punched the ticket to the Super Bowl, we immediately purchased tickets to the NFL Experience and Media Day. Because Atlanta is a transient city, it has a relatively large concentration of Patriot fans from New England so I knew events would fill up.

First Event: NFL Experience at the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC)

My wife and I, along with my brother, his wife, his daughter, and his sister-in-law met at the MARTA Station near my office (that’s Atlanta’s sad version of the “T”). Atlanta urged fans to take the train to the city since there are road closures and scarce/expensive parking. We were supposed to meet some family members at the GWCC around 9:45am and we were all taking Marta at various times. One of my cousins, along with his wife and two daughters, went to the MARTA Station just one station north of where we boarded, and we timed it just right that we ended up getting on the same train and passenger car as them. Then at the next stop, two other cousins and a cousin’s wife did the same thing just one station south of where we were. It was funny how it ended up that way. Other passengers were confused why so many Patriot fans ended up getting on the same car and thought that we were just a friendly group of fans that randomly hugged and greeted each set of Patriot fans that boarded.

As we made our way to the GWCC, we saw fans from every fan base and it was great that not a single fan heckled each other. Everyone was just going out to have a good time. The only heckling we got was from the workers that joked that they wouldn’t let us in. Atlanta is still bitter.

We went inside the NFL Experience and it was the first day and first time slot. It was great that it wasn’t busy at all so there was either no wait, or just a short 5-10 min wait. We spent about 5 hours there and got to do and see a lot. There were combine type activities (Broad Jump, Bench Press, 40 Yard Dash, 3 Cone Drill, etc.), an obstacle course, various passing drills, FG tries from varying distances, various photo opportunities like the Lombardi Trophy, Lamar Hunt Trophy, all 52 SB Rings on display, Team Gear, etc. It was a great time and definitely worth the price of admission ($40 plus tax for the weekend, $20 for weekdays, and only $10 for kids). I don’t know if I would spend that much again since I had already gone, but it was a fun experience for everyone. There were Falcons players signing autographs but I didn’t want any. Jerome Bettis was spotted walking around but I didn’t see him.

Just down the street is Centennial Olympic Park and they have free concerts every night so we stopped by there to check it out. There wasn’t anybody famous that first day but the more famous artists are performing later in the week on Super Bowl weekend. We walked around and did get heckled by an emcee at the Tostitos booth. All in good fun though. This was the first day of activities and we had a blast.

Second Event: NFL Opening Night (Formerly Known as Media Day)

We got tickets for this pretty early on and I’m glad we did because it sold out. I did not realize this, but they only had 8,000 tickets to sell so we were part of the lucky 8,000. For $30 a ticket plus tax, it was a steal. Doors opened at 5:30 and we got there around 5pm and were able to find a section that did not have a line so we stood at the front of the line. However, shortly thereafter, a lady working there asked us to move over a line because they were shutting that line down. We ended up being 10th in line instead of 1st. Then the lady ended up opening that same line right before they were letting people in so all of us that moved initially were a little mad, though we didn’t stay mad very long because we were going to a great event. While we were waiting in line, we had good conversations with fellow Patriot fans. Most of them were transplants like myself and everyone was so excited. I really wanted to bring my 28-3 sign but they did not allow banners. I couldn’t find a good way to smuggle it in so I didn’t try.

When we got in, they gave us an NFL branded earpiece where we could listen to whatever podium we want when the players got interviewed. Since we got there early, we walked around for a bit to see what was going on. We walked to the autograph station to see who was signing. Unfortunately, they were all Falcons players again, and also Takeo Spikes. I contemplated getting TKO’s signature but didn’t. We walked around to see what the best were, but because the Rams went first, we could only see the Rams players’ names and where they were stationed. We could have gotten really good seats by the corner, probably about 20 yards from the corner podium and also pretty close to the ramp where the players descend, but we weren’t sure who would be at that corner booth. We also wouldn’t be able to see the rest of the floor because of the obstructed views so we moved and sat on the other side of the floor so we could see more. We were above the stairs that descend to the media entrance/exit. Those seats were good but much farther away from the booths. We saw Willie McGinest and Rob Ninkovich descend those stairs right in front of us at one point – probably about 20 feet away. We were all yelling their names trying to get their attention and they smiled.
The Rams went to the floor first and there were a decent number of Rams fans there cheering them on, a lot more than I expected, but it wasn’t anywhere as close to the number of Pats fans. Surprisingly, I saw lots of fans from other teams too. We had to wait about hour until the Rams finished, then they introduced the Pats captains. The crowd erupted when the captains came out. Then the crowd erupted again when the players finally got introduced.

It was a cool experience and was a good idea that the NFL gave you those earpieces so you could switch the radio to hear whatever player you want. Only down side was the earpiece was only hooked up to the player mic so you couldn’t hear the question from the media…only the answers from the players. On top of that, the announcer kept yapping the whole time so you had to listen over him. When the Rams were up, the announcer kept quiet… you could hear a pin drop. It was very loud when the Pats were up. Fans kept yelling players names as they walked by. The atmosphere was bananas, but it was such a grape experience. The cherry on top was that we may have gotten on TV – I need to check ESPN Deportes or Telemundo because there were some Mexican fans that held up a huge Mexican flag. We let them get in front of us so they could be seen more clearly and we stood behind them. The cameras were definitely facing them and the media kept encouraging all of us to cheer loudly while they pointed the camera at us.
We weren’t close to the players’ booths but the other players walked around to interact with fans so that was pretty cool. I was able to see Dorsett, Develin, Gostkowski, Ryan Allen, Waddle, Van Noy, Harmon, Simon, and J Mac. The section next to us definitely got a lot of TV time – it was probably the loudest of the sections. They started “We’re still here” chants and the “We ready… we ready… for ya” chants. I’m not sure if you could hear it on TV but a lot of the sections joined in and it seemed pretty loud. I ended up moving over to that section towards the end when seats started opening up and I think I may have gotten on TV because the cameras were pointing at us a lot.

After the event officially ended, nobody really wanted to leave but they had to kick everyone out. The other fans left early because it ended pretty late on a work night. It was great walking out and all you could see are Pats fans everywhere.

If the Pats ever get to go to another Super Bowl that is in your city, you need to go to the NFL Experience and Media Day because it really was a great experience and well worth the price for tickets.

Game day is less than a week away and Pats fans here are pumped! We’re very well represented in Atlanta, even without fans coming from out of town. The out of town Pats fans will be arriving towards the end of the week and we’ll be taking over the city. We’ll have to rename the city, “PATlanta.”

When those early 00s Patriots teams were winning Super Bowls, the dominant narrative was that they were doing it without much talent on the roster. It was all coaching, there were no good players. As the players on the roster from that era start to get inducted into the HOF, it seems that a reinterpretation is in order.

So for the Chargers game I said the key to the game was converting Red Zone trips into touchdowns: check and W
For the Chiefs game, start strong and don’t fall back behind early: check and W

Here is my Super Bowl Key to winning the game: It may be obvious but still the most important thing imo, stop the Rams run game.

From 2012-2018 there have been 112 regular season OT games. The team that won the coin toss:

won 54 times (48.2%)
lost 51 times (45.5%)
tied 7 times (6.3%)

OT was ended on a 1st drive TD 19 times (17.0%)

From 2010-2018 there have been 8 playoff OT games. The team that won the coin toss:

won 7 times (87.5%)
lost 1 time (12.5%)

OT was ended on a 1st drive TD 5 times (62.5%) [Patriots account for 2 of those]

1 of the 7 wins was in the 2nd OT.

In 2015, the Patriots went into OT vs. the Jets. Pats won the toss but decided to kick off. The Jets scored the winning TD in 4 plays. I had put that out of my memory until I decided to do this little exercise.

It is not enough t to change anything. I think the the prevailing idea is if you want to win you have to play defense and stop them if you lose the coin toss.

BoSoxJim

People look at the playoff data and freak out. 8 games is a small sample size. We could very well run off a few games in a row where the team that wins the coin toss doesn’t win.

Well, I’d imagine there’s enough similarities, but the IRS is probably way scarier than the CRA.

One thing that Canada and the US share is a high degree of compliance with income tax codes. In parts of Europe (France, Greece, Italy, and others), income tax noncompliance is the rule not the exception. I don’t know how the national culture evolved to allow that, but if France tried to put all of their tax cheaters in prison, there would be more people in prison than free.

I have a few friends who live in France – told me that their employers are responsible for telling their revenue agency what they’ve made (from working). So that’s one monkey off their backs.

But everything else is still on taxpayer, like properties

Neil X

Well the employer telling the government how much you made is identical in the US. The employer fills out a 1099 form letting the government know how much you made, and how much the employer withheld for federal taxes and social security. But in France, despite having that information, noncompliance is rarely punished.

I used to work for the IRS as a Revenue Officer, it takes some serious criminal fraud to qualify one for prison. If you don’t file a return here, they’ll file one for you, with a big penalty. If you work with the IRS, they’re all about future compliance, then about paying back taxes. If you flat out or ignore the IRS, then bad things happen financially to you as far as liens against real estate, levies against bank accounts or wages. Mostly I worked with businesses, to remind them not to capitalize their undercapitalized start ups by stealing their… Read more »

In the US, income tax fraud prosecutions are primarily used for organized crime figures that the government can’t prove other crimes they’ve committed. As you said, regular folks just end up in tax thrall here with garnished wages and a harsh personal financial situation. It’s in the constitution, you can’t be thrown into prison for being in debt. In France, millions simply pay no taxes at all, and there does not seem to be any way for the government to get them to pay. In 2018, for the first time, France decided to automatically deduct income tax from paychecks. Duh.… Read more »

some of this actually looks like they did some video editing to make the mouths move more along with the words… anyone else feel like that?

Yes, I did transiently think “Wow, not just bad lip sync, bad video editing”.

While at a CPR training today at the town Fire Dept we learned that the ideal rhythm for chest compressions on a person whose heart has stopped matches the beat from Stayin’ Alive by the Bee Gees.

Might want to make sure your kids have that downloaded for Sunday, BSJ.

dr: “How did the patient die?”
me: “I couldn’t remember the second verse of Stayin’ Alive”

Read a story a while back where the Bee Gees purposely did that with the beat given the song is titled Staying Alive.

If true, that’s awesome

The other song with a beat with the correct rhythm?
“Another One Bites the Dust.”
(Not joking.)

If there is one thing left for Belichick to do, it should be to publish “Football Scouting Methods: Revised and Updated” to continue his dad’s work.

As posted the other day I could see him writing that kind of book as opposed to a tell all book.

I can see some would want the tell-all book. I would rather understand his insight into scouting in the salary cap era.

For all you Pats fans AND aviation enthusiasts, today on my flight from ATL-CLT, my PA announcement included that we would be cruising at 28,300 feet, thats 28-3. I hope I riled some feathers. Of course we never fly on the hundreds, only thousands.

You should do a 283 feet flyby of Atlanta when youre in the last day of retirement.

At least with Bud Light, I get that they aren’t advertising the actual product, they’re cultivating an image of a lifestyle the consumer wants to identify with.
It’s Coors light commercials whose appeal I cannot fathom. Partial list of things that are cold if you put them in the fridge: Coors light, red wine, water, antifreeze, Drano, jet fuel stabilizer….

I was disappointed as a child to learn that jet fuel was boring low octane kerosene. I was picturing liquid TNT, ready to erupt into a fireball at any second! Boring!.

In case anyone is wondering RP-1 is one of the rocket fuels.
