Postseason Y Factors 2018: Patriots vs. Chargers

-by DNOMN8R314

It’s always nice getting to write these extra Y Factors articles. This year’s opening January battle is against the I Still Think Of Them As San Diego Instead Of Los Angeles Chargers, and their level of talent has led to writers discussing and analyzing a significant number of potential matchups, leaving fewer for me. The Chargers only missed on a first-round bye because of a lost tiebreaker to their AFC West rival Chiefs, but they are no ordinary five seed. (Is there even sugh a thing as an ordinary five seed? Playoff teams are playoff teams, and their division status doesn’t necessarily provide a blanket statement as to how good they are.) With an offense that can defeat a team in multiple ways and a defense more solid than one might remember, Los Angeles (it’s still hard to type that) is capable of handling even a strong performance from New England. As the Patriots finally take the field this postseason, they’ll need to put forth a top-level game to move on. Here are three of those “fewer for me” matchups to keep an eye on.

Austin translation: While top Chargers running back Melvin Gordon is expected to play Sunday, he is still managing a knee injury, which could lead to more opportunities for change-of-pace man Austin Ekeler. The second-year player has become one of the league’s most useful receiving backs, ranking second in the league among running backs in yards after catch. (First in the league? Gordon.) Whether Gordon, Ekeler, or rookie Justin Jackson is on the field, Los Angeles will be featuring a player who can make their way through a defense with top-class skill. New England will need to be ready for their usage on the ground and through the air, and to keep them from shortening the field when the ball finds its way into their hands.

Tell me, Mr. Anderson: Earlier this week, the Patriots promoted tight end Stephen Anderson to the roster in place of the injured Jacob Hollister. Like his predecessor, Anderson is a receiving tight end and former undrafted free agent; in contrast, he wears a number starting with 8 instead of 4. (I do like Hollister’s 47.) With a Gronk season that fell short of his superb standard, and Dwayne Allen’s role limited to blocking, Anderson might get opportunities in the receiving game. The Patriots have seen Anderson before signing him this season, as he was on the Houston sideline in their 2016 and 2017 meetings. Having spent this entire regular season on the practice squad learning the offense, Anderson should be ready to step into the offense wherever he is needed.

King of the return: The news that the Chargers have signed Nick Rose to their playoff roster to handle kickoffs, attention has diverted attention onto Cordarrelle Patterson and away from Desmond King. (Side note: this is the third time this year I’ve used this paragraph’s bullet header, and the first time it’s been literal.) King, a first-team All-Pro flex defensive back and second-team punt returner, has continued to establish his dynamic play throughout the 2018 season, and Stephen Gostkowski and Ryan Allen will need to place their kicks wisely to keep him in check. In their games against teams with upper-quality returners, the Patriots have tended to kick away from them, but have sent them the ball once or twice a game, and that has tended to result in long returns each time. New England will certainly look to stop this trend, unless the Chargers decide to switch sides and put the ball in Patterson’s hands.

TUMS-O-METER Prediction:
And here we are: the beginning of the Patriots’ regular season, otherwise known as the Divisional Round of the playoffs and a shot at a spot in the AFC Championship Game. After going 14-6 in the preseason, last week the Pats found out their opponent will be the San Di………..er…….LA Chargers. How will the Pats play? Rusty? Rested? Ready to go? It seems having the bye helped out on the injury front and Pats fans hope this brings back the Gronk of Prior Seasons. This will not be an easy game. The Chargers come in after a 12-4 season and a win at PoeBird Land in the Wild Card Round. Philip (one L) Rivers, who is not much younger than TB, is having an excellent season now that he is surrounded by a well-rounded, talented supporting cast on offense, and their defense ain’t too shabby either, particularly the defensive line. The Pats still have some question marks. Was the Jets game a sign of the defense jelling or an anomaly against an inferior team? Will Phillip (two L’s) Dorsett play a major role in filling for Josh Gordon or will Bill’s gamble on Gordon backfire in the playoffs? Stats show the LAC defense is susceptible to receiving running backs; will they adjust or will the Pats exploit this? The weather forecast calls for game time temps in the 20s (but no snow). Will the chill give the Chargers problems? Which aging QB will have the better game? I could go on, or I could have stopped after the first line. Either way, buy your stock in TUMS yesterday, because it’s chalk time and this is gonna be a 2.3 to 3 case game……easy.

I miss Wilfork. I’m glad he is being honored at the game.

“amazing job by coaches and players making the extremely difficult become routine”

I agree it is very hard and I am grateful they have been on this run.

I like to think I am thankful. Most of the Patriots playoff games have been at home.

Looking at the Chiefs defense, the Patriots should be able to run the football. It ranked 27th in the NFL in run defense during the regular season, and allowed over 100 yards rushing in 12 of its 17 games, including five straight to close regular season.

Chiefs have given Brady issues his entire career. His 88.5 QB rating against them is the lowest against any AFC team. Also, he hasn’t done that great against defensive coordinator Bob Sutton. In eight games, he is 155-for-255 (61 percent) passing, with 1,850 yards, 10 touchdowns, five interceptions and 12 sacks.

With a win Sunday, the Patriots will reach the Super Bowl for the third straight season and ninth time in the Bill Belichick era. That would be a remarkable accomplishment and even more so considering the team he had this season. An argument could be made that if it happens, it would be the least talented of all nine of those teams, and because of that could be deemed Belichick’s greatest job as head coach.

Against man coverage this season, Mahomes’ 9.5 yards per attempt, 10.3 touchdown percentage (TD/pass attempts) and 121.3 passer rating are all league-high figures. Meanwhile, the Pats employ man coverage on 51.6 percent of their coverage snaps — the highest rate in the NFL.

If the Patriots lose to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game, it will mean that Patriots Football Weekly — the team’s official newspaper — will publish its final-ever issue after the game. And if the Patriots advance to Super Bowl LIII, the post-Super Bowl issue will be the last issue. The media world has changed since the newspaper published its first issue in the mid-1990s, and much of what PFW originally did is now found on the team’s website, which is one of the best in the NFL. From Reiss:
Chiefs running back Damien Williams hasn’t had to look far for motivation in the playoffs. When he was an unrestricted free agent this past offseason, the Colts brought him in for a visit but didn’t sign him, in part due to some medical concerns. The year before, when Williams was a restricted free agent, the Patriots brought him in for a visit but signed restricted free agent Mike Gillislee instead. Williams rushed for 129 yards and a touchdown against the Colts on Jan. 12, and now gets to face the other team that passed on him.

How many full seasons as a starting running back has Damien Williams played? How many carries in his career?

Maybe the Patriots wcan trade Michel for a 4th and 5th round pick and pick a starting RB in the 5th round and a LB in the 4th?

Let’s see if Michel ever gets a second contract from the pats
Rb’s can be replaced so easily and be found anywhere

dp73

A lot of RB don’t get 2nd contracts but that often based on injuries and ware and tare and money on RB’s ,not talent .

I don’t care if they drafted Michel in the ist round or the 7th.

What RB’s do you like for the Patriots in the later rounds this year?

cfpats4
Member

cfpats4

They don’t need a rb this year
They need lb, de, qb, te, wr and maybe a safety
Bill has trouble drafting wr, so hopefully they look to bring in some free agents

dp73

But you can get a RB as good as Michel very easily in the 4-7 rounds so why not do that for depth.

So BB will never be able to draft a good WR because of history?

Pats 20
Chiefs 17

A surprisingly low scoring, defensive battle. Pats control the clock for the majority of the game with the rushing attack. Pats D confuses Mahomes into throwing a pick. Patterson, Edelman, Gost, Ryan Allen all big weapons in the field position battle.

We’re on to Atlanta.

Lol, watching the game now, the chiefs got a break cus we were not discipline, I hope they are ready this time cus I believe this team is focused and if Kansas don’t bring their A game they will get dominated at home, I will keep saying it, they are soft and if Michel could do that to them then I can i only imagine tomorrow with a healthy online and Gronk with Develin.

Rex is healthy don’t sleep on him, the Chiefs will live or die by the rush, I like our chances, I think our oline dominate in both pass and run.

One possibly notable change from the earlier matchup that I haven’t seen mentioned as much is the replacement of Kenjon Barner with Rex Burkhead, who is a legit receiving threat and a more violent runner.

IMO, the difference between Hunt and Williams as pass-catchers is a big factor in this game. Hunt was averaging 14.5 yards per reception before he was cut and killed the Pats twice. Williams’ ypr this season is 7.0.

That’s what he is. A QB coach and OC. Why bring in a guy without any NFL experience and not a very impressive college resume as a HC based on being a QB guru and have someone run the offense? It would’ve been nuts if they had hired an OC.

Which is the way the league seems to be going. Hire an Offensive Head Coach and a Defensive Head Coach and give one the overall title “Head Coach” and he gets to set the schedules and make the few decisions that are team wide.

Damien Williams has almost the same number of rushes for 90 fewer yards and the same number of TDs in his career as Kareem Hunt had in 11 games this year. Before last week his most rush attempts in a game was 13.

MrScratch

Which wouldn’t be a bad thing (on the ground) as long it’s not too nice. The more they run the less Mahomes has a chance to get it to Hill and Kelce. I think the Patriots dare them to lean on Williams.

BoSoxJim

BoSoxJim

Actually, it’s not.

Tyreek Hill’s production has dropped off considerably since Hunt left. Teams are devoting more of their efforts to stopping Hill which means Williams has an easier time.

Williams is not nearly the RB that Hunt is. The Patriots had no answer for Hunt. That being said, they can’t ignore Williams. However he’s not going to keep the Pats up at night the way Hunt did (run and pass game).

But I don’t know how you can necessarily correlate Hill’s production in relation as that also coincides with the loss of Sammy Watkins and an uptick in Kelce’s usage and production and in cold weather Dec games– lot of factors could explain that and in the last 5 he’s still averaging 5.8 for 86.4.

“The way Rob Gronkowski moved in the running game last week hinted to me that he’s close to being at his best physically. Expect him to be a factor as well as Phillip Dorsett and Chris Hogan. Edelman and James White are the straws that stir the drink most weeks but Sutton will try and neutralize them. This is a “run sets up the pass” kind of week where staying out of second and third-and-long and having play-action as a viable threat to open up space and slow down the pass rush is vital. “-Tom E Curran

The defense is going to try to neutralize the other teams top targets every week. The Patriots have wanted to use Gronkowski from week 1.

The Patriots will try to neutralize Hill and kelce and the Chiefs hope Watkins performance last week is a good sign.

Random observation: A lot is made about the #Patriots’ lack of high-impact drafting the last few years – and oftentimes for good reason – but the team also completely rebuilt its interior offensive line in 2015 and 2016 by adding rookies Shaq Mason, David Andrews and Joe Thuney.

All 3, especially Mason, are among the better players at their positions. Even Thuney who was much maligned at times received a couple all pro votes.

I have no idea why Thuney is much maligned here.

Who specifically in the Boston media is down on him?

Off the top of my head I know he was a running joke for Mazz, along with Van Noy.

Maz made fun of Jordan Devey because he played the tuba, but I don’t recall him ragging on Thuney.

I am a football fan and I spend very little time thinking and worrying what the media thinks about the Patriots and if we are hated or not.

I do like to see who the predictors at NFL.com, CBS,ESPN and other have to say game the actual game and who might win. Last week 63% predicted the Patriots to win.

unless they are a successful sports bettor I don’t care what people predict. their prediction is about as good as ours

“At press time, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had already squandered all of the team’s timeouts before kickoff.”

So how long is Brady suspended for?

Goodell had no choice, but to retroactively revoke the Patriots’ sixth round compensatory draft pick from 2000.
