Y Factors 2018: Patriots vs. Vikings

-by DNOMN8R314

With so much reminiscence of the classic 1994 Pats-Vikings Drew-Bledsoe-throws-70-passes comeback win, I think a lookback is a nice December idea. But instead of 24 years, we’re only going back four, to the last Patriots-Vikings matchup. That game, the second of the Patriots’ 2014 season, saw:

  • two NFL teams playing on a college field
  • Devin McCourty intercept a pass and return it to the 1-yard line
  • Chandler Jones block a pre-halftime field goal and take it for six
  • Stevan Ridley rush for over 100 yards (okay, he had 101, but that’s still over 100)
  • Matt Cassel start for the Vikings
  • Four Patriots intercept Cassel passes, including Dominique Easley (the others: McCourty, Darrelle Revis, and Logan Ryan)
  • a 30-7 final score in favor of New England

It’s now four years later: many team personnel have changed, but Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are still as steady as ever. For their longevity and insight to help lead the Patriots to a victory, they’ll need contributions in every area from the team and coaching staff. Here are a few that may not be getting as much attention this week.

I’m thinking RBs: The Patriots’ offensive success has channeled through running backs Sony Michel and James White. Michel has been the workhorse on the ground, while White has been one of Brady’s most trusted aerial options in 2018. The running back depth has been boosted with the return of multi-purpose back Rex Burkhead from injured reserve, and between the three, there should be plenty of opportunity Sunday afternoon. The Vikings have a very stout run defense, suggesting a strong workload for White and Burkhead, but Michel has begun to be incorporated in the passing game with two catches against the Jets last week. Whichever running backs are on the field will need to be ready for the ball to end up in their hands.

TEs out information: After the otherworldly pass-catching duo of Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs (who already sport respective slash lines of 93/1138/8 (!!!!!!) and 79/790/6), the next-most common target in the Vikings’ offense has been veteran tight end Kyle Rudolph. A first-round pick turned Minnesota mainstay, Rudolph has already caught 43 passes for 425 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and can block as well as any tight end in the run game. As mentioned last week, recent New England acquisition Obi Melifonwu has been expected to join Patrick Chung in coverage duties of tight ends. Patriots defenders have praised Melifonwu in the press this week, suggesting his opportunity is still there and he is taking advantage of it behind the scenes. With Thielen and Diggs expected to draw most of the attention from the Patriots’ secondary, and rightly so, whoever is in charge of covering Rudolph will also have a tricky task to prepare for.

King of the return: The Patriots’ special teams struggles have been well-discussed, including by me most weeks, but the Vikings’ coverage units have been substandard in 2018 as well. Both teams rank in the bottom five in kickoff coverage (I believe I have that correct; unfortunately I can’t find the page where I saw that statistic), so the possibilities are open for another long return. While Minnesota has two solid returners in Marcus Sherels and Ameer Abdullah, it’s former Viking Cordarrelle Patterson who will be the biggest threat on the field in the return game. Patterson’s 95-yard return against Chicago this year, the sixth of his career, was his first as a Patriot and his first wearing a purple-free uniform. With rain in the forecast for Sunday and the calendar turning to December, there could be more opportunities for returns instead of kickoffs flying through the end zone. That bodes well for Patterson, and Patriots fans will certainly hope he takes advantage.

TUMS-O-METER:
Now that the Patriots have returned to the win column versus the Jets, they now face a tougher test against the Vikings. This game has important implications for playoff positioning. The Vikings need to keep pace with the Bears for a shot at a division title and to stay in a wildcard spot. The Pats are currently in the #2 seed and are positioned well for another division title, but the Texans are breathing down their necks with the Steelers not far behind. Something’s gotta give.
The Vikings have a talented wide receiver group. Will the Pats secondary meet the challenge? Will Cousins have a field day? Or will the rejuvenated Pats offense dictate the game?
Lots of questions. Lots on the line.
Prediction: 8 bottles.

Hey Jimbo. While you’re around: Jared Cook or Gronk? I’ve been holding out hope for a Gronk comeback but this is the playoffs and I can’t be sentimental.

Yikes. A lot to consider.

Gronk was taken off the injury report and seemed to be in good spirits. Also, he acknowledges he can be more effective and is coming off his worst game this season (maybe his whole career). So he could be really motivated to perform tomorrow.

No Xavien Howard means Miami will have to divert more safety help to the outside. However, it could be heavy rain during the game which could mean more reliance on the ground game.

Cook will be facing the Steeler defense.

I’d probably still go with Gronk.

out of 117 WRs with a minimum of 25 snaps in the slot…..

since week 5, Edelman is 4th in targets (46) and yards (341), 2nd in receptions (32), 34th in yards/route run (1.68)

Edelman has taken 67.2% of his snaps (203/302) out of the slot (26th)

BoSoxJim

Tyreek Hill has 11 receiving TDs this year. 8 have come from the slot (most in the NFL) even though he has only run 44.1% of his routes from the slot. About 1 out of every 4 catches from the slot are for TDs.

In other words, when Hill lines up in the slot, be afraid. Be very afraid.

BoSoxJim

I think only 2 games per year can be flexed. And SNF has already flexed 2 games this year.

CBS and FOX can’t flex games. They can protect games, but all flexing is based off of the wishes of SNF.

Here is a good summary of the flexing rules:

And it’s the NFL that decides which games get flexed to SNF. I thought it was NBC that made the request.

Maybe it’s just my terrible memory, but it seems like most Patriots games were flexed to the later slot in previous years.

Although it is completely understandable why nobody picked him up off of waivers. Nobody wanted that PR nightmare (not even Washington after the heat they took for Foster). If the public didn’t cause an uproar over DV, most of the teams in the NFL would probably line up to get him off of waivers (well, he probably wouldn’t have been released in the first place). His suspension will probably be 6-8 weeks (they are also looking at an incident where he punched someone in a parking lot). This is the NFL of course so to save face they could make… Read more »

I think the NFL office will stall and keep him out this entire year, then wait until the last minute (keeping him out of training camps) and suspend him for a full season, and will make the union look like the bad guys PR wise, and reduce it to 6 games. Then some team will bring him on in the benevolent rehabilitating the young underprivileged man mode, because we believe everyone (talented) deserves a second chance.

BoSoxJim

Well, if a group of owners say they want the process sped up, it will get sped up.

Of course this probably won’t get resolved before the end of this season. But once it’s over (and there is less focus on them), the suspension will be announced.

Teams will want this suspension announced so they can consider Hunt while making their draft plans.

Anyone feel like Edelman has run way more jet sweeps/end arounds than CP lately? Maybe it’s because CP has had to fill in at RB recently? I did love the play they ran where they had CP fake like he was coming back to set a block and then he leaked out and caught a pass with no one near him.

I actually feel bad.. the unchecked confidence was probably essential to their kick start last year. So I can see why the younger players felt it was a component to success. They’re learning, I imagine they’ll be good next year.

So is Bortles THAT bad or is it that the Jags aren’t utilizing his strengths? How did he torch us the last 2 games. I’m curious because do we think BB could utilize his strengths (whatever they may be) and maximize his potential / get more out of less?

I think he just had the two best games of his life, first against Pittsburgh and then us in the AFCCG.
He’s so inaccurate. They lost a chance at a comeback the other week on a game-sealing pick. The throw was so high the TE that the TE batted it up trying to catch it and it got picked.
He’s basically a running QB. You can scheme some offense around him, but locking him up and hoping he’d change was a massive blunder.

It’s just frustrating to watch him play other teams. It’s got to be some confidence thing in his head when he plays us. He just makes horrible decisions, rushes throws, throws wildly. It’s like watching me out there just panicking at playing at the pro level.

@MikeGiardi
#Patriots WR Josh Gordon on how his conditioning has improved, “it’s night and day. A huge difference. Coach Cabrera and the strength staff has been amazing with me…I think I’m as good as I’ve been.”

The Celtics are in a really good place, rotation wise. If you can have guys like Gordon Hayward, Jaylen Brown and Terry Rozier coming off your bench, you’ll do alright. Sucks to see the Baynes injury though.

The Cs have enough depth to manage any short term injury

Minutes matter, not who starts

I like to see them get the rookie, Robert Williams, some more meaningful snaps.

I’m surprised he’s on the roster – figured he’d spend the season in Maine

Yeah, what a difference a week or so makes when the pundits were claiming that Terry or Kyrie had to go! because they’d never solve the rotation woes and get enough minutes for everyone.
