Who Might Be Tom Brady’s Record-Breaking 71st Touchdown Recipient?

-by DNOMN8R314

(NOTE: This was originally written and posted by me on the r/Patriots subreddit.)

Over a career spanning 21 seasons and seven teams, Vinny Testaverde set an NFL record by throwing a regular season touchdown pass to 70 unique receivers.

Entering his 19th season, all for one team, Tom Brady is second on that list with 68.

Brady added three unique receivers to his list last season and five the year prior, so chances are very good that he will pass Testaverde during this season. And with a significant number of possible end zone targets, Brady could extend the gap. But who will be the player who passes the mark?

To get an idea, let’s go over this year’s crop of pass catchers one group at a time.

Ineligible players: Of Brady’s 68 TD receivers to this point, seven are already Patriots:

  • Rob Gronkowski, TE (75)
  • Julian Edelman, WR (24)
  • James White, RB (12)
  • Chris Hogan, WR (8)
  • Rex Burkhead, RB (3)
  • Brandon Bolden, RB (2)
  • Dwayne Allen, TE (1)

Obviously the final roster is not set yet, but all seven of these players have a good chance of being on the team once the regular season begins. Regardless, they are already on the TD12 list, so they cannot be the player to break the record.

One note: James Develin has a postseason catch from Brady, but does not have one in the regular season so does not count in the tally. Which leads into the next category:

Returning players: There are just five skill position players currently on the team who are returning Patriots with zero TD12s:

  • James Develin, FB
  • Jacob Hollister, TE
  • Phillip Dorsett, WR
  • Matthew Slater, WR
  • Mike Gillislee, RB

Gillislee is a toss-up for a roster spot and Slater rarely takes snaps on offense, but any of the other three are solid candidates for a Brady TD snag this season. In particular, Hollister and Dorsett are in line for larger roles entering their second season with New England, so either of them could easily be the record-breaker. In contrast, Develin has been in Foxboro since 2012, but he always seems to get a target or two a game, so he should not be counted out either.

Offensive regulars: Again, this depends on how the final roster shakes out, but I would put the following players in this category:

  • Cordarrelle Patterson, WR
  • Kenny Britt, WR
  • Eric Decker, WR
  • Sony Michel, RB
  • Jeremy Hill, RB

Each of these players, if they stick on the Patriots’ 53, should have a defined role in the offense. This would put them on the field with significant opportunities to grab a touchdown snag from Brady. They might not become superstars in New England, but relying on role players like these has not just helped the Patriots steady tally up victories over the past two decades, but has also allowed Brady to rack up more and more unique touchdown receivers.

The rest of the roster: This final section primarily focuses on players who are not roster locks, namely:

  • Riley McCarron, WR
  • Braxton Berrios, WR
  • Devin Lucien, WR
  • Paul Turner, WR
  • Ralph Webb, RB
  • Henry Poggi, FB
  • Will Tye, TE
  • Ryan Izzo, TE

These are the players who will be fighting not just for offensive opportunities but also for a place on New England’s roster. Those who do make the squad may only have a handful of opportunities to handle the football on offense, much less catch a touchdown pass; those who do not could find themselves shuffled off the roster very quickly. But if a player sticks around and demonstrates reliability, he could receive more and more chances, and find himself on the TD12 list. Such a player would probably end up in the end zone after the record is passed, but none can be completely counted out.

I suppose there is one more category of players:

Oddball opportunities: Will Brady target an offensive lineman out of a 6-OL goal line set? Will a member of the front seven line up at fullback and find himself with the ball in his hands? Will Brady catch a pass deflected by a hulking nose tackle and break the plane himself? Any of these could happen, and some have become regular parts of New England’s goal line offense. With Bill Belichick, the unexpected is sometimes pre-planned.

While the preseason continues and the roster continues to take shape, we fans can look forward to “Touchdown Tom” Brady claiming another record as he strives to lead the Patriots to another Lombardi. Let’s enjoy 2018.

Public Service Announcement: I’m thinking of updating my fantasy football team name from “Moore Killings Likely” to “Wise Guy”s…if anyone can find a picture of the backs of Lawrence Guy and Deatrich Wise Jr. standing next to each other spelling out “Wise Guy”, I’d greatly appreciate it. A google image search isn’t helping me right now.

Mark Daniels @MarkDanielsPJ
Belichick on Trey Flowers having an impact on the younger pass rushers: If they just watch what he does and do what he does, you can’t do much better than that

Younger than Trey? He’s only 25, with three years experience!

To me, he is not good enough to pay top dollar, and he is likely to be gone after this season. If Rivers is healthy, and with the addition of Clayborn, I would look to trade Trey before the deadline, if not sooner. He’s worth more in potential compensation than he is on the field.

I think re-signing Flowers is fairly realistic, as far as re-signing a high end non-QB ever is.
He’s a traditionally undervalued type of player. Low sack totals, relative to his total impact. Huge hit/hurry totals. Had a massive postseason again this past year. Plus run defender. These are all things the league doesn’t place a premium on. He’s not the prototype.
Its the Chandler Joneses of the world who get the big money.

ĥüǧøwàšm̂ÿĥøm̂êbøÿ
Member

ĥüǧøwàšm̂ÿĥøm̂êbøÿ

And if I’m wrong, and Flowers does in fact get rich? You have a 3rd round comp pick headed your way. So I strongly disagree with the notion that trading arguably your best defender – to get ahead of not re-signing him – makes any sense.

ĥüǧøwàšm̂ÿĥøm̂êbøÿ
Member

ĥüǧøwàšm̂ÿĥøm̂êbøÿ

Also, w/r/t this coming season – Flowers is essentially your DT – he is a DE by name but you need him to provide pass rush inside. You’re going to line him up to penetrate on plenty of early downs, and all third downs. He’s not really in competition with Rivers and Clayborn.
And beyond that, it’s just a philosophical difference in opinion. The goal is to be good at something. Adrian Clayborn and Derek Rivers are emerging doesn’t make your best pass rusher expendable – it creates an opportunity to have a good pass rush, rather than an average one.

“(Quarterback Tom) Brady always wanted to know where I was at all times,” Hernandez told Baez, as conveyed in Baez’s book. “He would always tell me, ‘Stop hanging with those guys, get your (expletive) together.’ One of the things I regret is not listening to him more.”

If Brady knew Aaron really was hanging with the wrong type of people, I wonder why the Patriots didn’t have some kind of intervention with him and get some security set up? A truly tragic story.

The person has to be willing to take the assistance. Look at Josh Gordon, who has a full support team from the Browns once he decided for himself that he needed it. If Hernandez didn’t want it, it wouldn’t have worked anyway. I also doubt Brady/the team knew the full extent of what was going on.

How do you know Aaron wasn’t willing, especially if he was asking to be traded (assuming this lawyer is telling the truth)?

rondo723

I don’t, but it seems like something the lawyer would have mentioned during this image rehabilitation effort. I imagine Brady and others have told countless guys to stop hanging around with their hometown cronies and get to work, and we’ve never heard about it. The result on this situation was an extreme outlier and I think Hernandez’s behavior and actions leading up to the event are being significantly recast in an attempt to shift blame.

Neil X

It’s ridiculous to blame the Patriots for anything Hernandez did. His lawyer says he feared for his life in New England, but he is the one who killed people over things as stupid as a spilled drink.

We don’t have enough information to answer your question. We don’t know what if anything Brady communicated to the team. I’m making a prediction. Hoyer will be the #2, but they cut Etling and end up finding another QB to bring in on PS, or maybe even active roster. Seriously, Hoyer does not seem up to par, and Etling hasn’t shown much (although only about 7 game reps)

But, it would irritate many for the fact that they passed up on many QB’s in the late rounds that are better than Etling. I still think theres something to do with BB’s stubbornness and begrudging nature for why he did that.

Sounds like Britt did a bit of practicing with the team today- he’s hoping to do more tomorrow- hope he doesn’t have any set backs.

Was that Embiid with Belichick on the sidelines before the game in “Sights and Sounds”? Pretty cool. Thinks he can play TE for us. We’ve already got a pretty good one, Joel.

A couple of observations after finally watching Thursday night’s Pats game: • Adrian Clayborn may not be a great pass rusher, but he looks like the best one the Pats have. He made a difference in that game. • Despite Keion Crossen’s obvious mistakes in coverage, the kid was on his receivers like a cheap suit, and tackles like …Malcolm Butler. I hope he sticks at least on the PS. • Ja’Whaun Bentley is a much better Elandon Roberts. • Brandon Bolden is worth the roster spot. • Eric Decker is done. • Cordarrelle Patterson fits this offense. • If… Read more »

I’m glad you’re finally coming around on Claiborne. And I agree about Crossen. He did remind me of Butler a little outside of his horrendous mistakes when the ball is in the air. But that can be worked on. No rookie is going to be polished in that area.

He played a decent amount of snaps. Didn’t hear his name called but once. Mike Reiss says it’s a good thing. Somebody needs to analyze the All-22.

Phil Perry’s roster projection – https://www.nbcsports.com/boston/patriots/phil-perrys-patriots-53-man-roster-projection-20#slide-1

If he’s right about C Jones making it, then he probably also right about McCarron not, because we won’t need him for punts. Fasten your seatbelts if C Jones gets a second chance at punts….

Most of us assume he’s gone, but there’s always a surprise or two – Richards last year, further back, Bequette somehow hung on for a while. If the Pats think he’s over his rookie yips, they will keep him simply for STs contributions

Nate

Yeah and keeping Bequette was a waste of time so let’s not waste time on CJ.

I think this is a good analysis
https://www.patspulpit.com/2018/8/12/17680520/why-this-year-could-be-our-last-best-chance-at-a-sb-2019-roster

I am little more pessimist than the author. I think we will not see TB and BB play in another SB. That is why the loss vs the Eagles was so disappointing (for me more than 2007): last chance wasted.

dp73

I’ll take that bet. A friendly one. I really see them going 11-5. in this year.

They have good receiving options in Gronkowski,White, Burkhead, Michel, Hollister and Edelman. Granted the receiving core is shaky but Patterson and Dorsett have speed and can add something to the players I mentioned. The offense will be good but different.

I think fantasy takes over this time of year – Pats only have Brady & Gronk on any “players to draft” list out there, so the assumption is we’re going to be down.

Fortunately, that’s not how it works, at least on offense.

Defensively, the last thing everyone remembers is us getting torched in SB. I think injuries at LB & DE played a big role in that. Hopefully the guys returning from injury, plus the addition of Shelton and Clayborn, strengthens our front seven.

Lol, not sure if they win another but they will definitely get there again .

Noticed a lot more pessimism than usual coming from Pats fans and just curious as to why. I don’t see any other juggernaut teams in the AFC, and definitely not in the AFCE. Aside from injuries derailing the season I have no reason to believe they won’t have the same success we are used to. Sure the SB is no guarantee and there are some real concerns about depth at certain positions but as long as Brady stays upright they have as good a chance as anyone.

Mattdog #GoodLockerRoomGuy

I’d say they have about a 50% chance of making it to the SB, just like every year. 🙂

No jaggernaut. But a few very good team, yes. The team is getting older. Plus I think the potential mental fallout of THIS SB loss is greatly underestimated.

On one hand, I haven’t been this curious about the Pats roster/preseason games in a while. Probably because of the focus on edge defenders.
On the other hand, the roster seems imbalanced so far in preseason. There’s questions about who to keep at some spots, but also depth questions at others. That’s normal. But this feels like the most uneven the Pats roster has been in five years.

You’ve got excellent depth – to the point of redundancy – at RB, possibly IOL, NT, DE, and strongside LB. Meanwhile, at OT and SS, you’re down to your last options and the season hasn’t started yet.
