A Critical Perspective of the 2018 Offseason

-by Hugo

Why does everyone hate Duke? As someone without a rooting interest in college basketball, I’ve long wondered. The most common answer – “because they’re Duke” – makes little sense at face value. Until you step back, and realize it does.

Among hundreds and hundreds of nationally visible sports teams in America, Duke basketball are one of a handful of agreed-upon villains. And in a remarkable stroke of coincidence, they happen to be extremely successful.

Indeed, a run-down of the teams that can rival their consensus villainy reveals an incredible pattern – every last one of them has a long history of success. Even more remarkable? No matter how many participants, each sport has precisely one or two villains. There are 32 NFL clubs and one consensus villain. There are 350 Division I basketball programs and one consensus villain. Villainy in sports arises organically and spontaneously from its need to exist.

Storytelling is deeply ingrained in human society. Every culture from the Pacific islands to sub-Saharan Africa tells fundamentally similar stories. For a story to exist, there must be something at stake. For there to be something at stake, there must be a hero. And for there to be a hero, there must be a villain.

Accordingly, society’s interest in sport is fundamentally rooted in their ability to frame it. Their favorite teams are heroes, like Achilles or Anansi or Thor. A spectacle that has no intrinsic meaning in the world becomes meaningful. The tossing around of a ball acquires stakes. And those stakes manifest themselves as struggle against evil. The Yankees become the Trojans; LeBron James becomes the Midgard Serpent.

That’s why everyone loves the underdog. Hell, individual character archetypes in sport transcend the exact nature of the sports themselves – Tom Brady contrasted against Peyton Manning, Cristiano Ronaldo against Lionel Messi, Sidney Crosby against Alex Ovechkin, Pete Sampras against Andre Agassi, and many more. Stories “write themselves” because the stories exist as universal templates in human consciousness.

Meanwhile, the Patriot Way is the inverse perspective of the success of the New England Patriots. Just as New England’s success has led fans nationally to ascribe villainous qualities to them, it has led die-hard supporters to see them as imbued with intrinsic heroism.

To many, the success of the Patriots is not an accident, but a confirmation of their virtue. They are a different football team, not a better version of other football teams. The team’s pro shop has monetized this, with a whole line of “Do Your Job” apparel. One does not merely identify with the Patriots, but with what they represent. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are gods, Julian Edelman and Tedy Bruschi are parables, and football games won are testimony.

Thus, the massive unrest among die-hard Patriots fans this offseason must to be similar to how the ancient Greeks felt during a lightning storm. Le’Veon Bell and the Steelers disagreeing is a contract dispute. Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers disagreeing is locker room drama. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady being at odds is a cosmological event.

To the Patriot Way-er, in their totality they possess intrinsic virtue, so one of them must be right and one of them must be wrong. Depending on their preference in worldview as it relates to things other than football, the “good guy” can be Tom Brady or Bill Belichick. But no longer both.

The revelation that Tom Brady and Bill Belichick supported Trump in 2016 was a glimpse into how many fans are uncomfortable with a reality in which the Hall-of-Fame tandem are good, but not Good.

A lot of ink has been spilled about when the reign of the Patriots at the top of the NFL’s standings will end. The common thread is the presumption of a discrete end. Rather than being the totality of their football work and performance, the Patriots are assumed to be in possession of a person and/or quality that separates them from their peers. And in a watershed moment, that virtue (or witchcraft, depending on perspective) will desert them.

But the Patriot “dynasty” will not end with a bang. Nor will it end with a whimper. It will end with 8 wins instead of 12, 350 points instead of 450. There will be no fire and brimstone, no press conferences or trumpets in the sky. One day, and sooner rather than later, the Patriots will be less successful at carrying a pigskin up and down the field, than they are now. And people will do what they’ve always done – find new constellations in the sky to gaze upon and interpret.

Interesting that out of all RFA’s he’d get that kind of deal coming off a (pretty much) lost season. And that the Kings would target a guy on the team that has the most cap space left in the league.

Mike Trudell @LakersReporter
2/2: But L.A., of course, will shoot a bunch of 3’s, and they did so after the All-Star break better than we may remember: Brandon Ingram at 46.2%; Kentavious Caldwell-Pope 42.3%; Josh Hart 39.3%; Kyle Kuzma 38.5%; and Brook Lopez 36.7%.

This is where guys like Lebron and RONDO can help the Lakers even more. Ingram, KCP, Hart and Kuzma, all can knock down effectively wide open triples.

KCP and Kuzma are projectable at those rates, but Ingram and Hart missed a lot of games post all-star and Ingram averages fewer than 2 3PA a game. Not sure how relevant their small-sample percentages are yet.

For the season (non sample size), they were 15th in 3PA and 29th in 3P%.

Their answer… sign two of the worst outside shooters in the game!

There are many reasons for both the Thunder and Anthony to mutually agree to this split. For one, Anthony opting in to the final year of his deal — as he should have done, to be clear — puts a huge financial strain on the Thunder. As it currently stands, this Thunder roster would cost over $300M between salary and luxury tax bills. Buying out or trading Anthony could end up saving the Thunder over $100M.

Trade would be great if they could somehow find someone to take his $27.9M without sending much of anything back. Buyout means little– he’s not taking $3M. Waive and stretch is most likely, but what that really is that he’ll only cost them roughly $30M this year… then $30M next year… then $30M the year after since they ‘re projected to be over the tax going forward. Net total savings– a few million. They just won’t have to pay it all now.

I borrowed this statement from The Pats Fans Club House I’m in on Facebook. Thought you’d like to have a chuckle or two. I’ve heard “some people are saying” that the NFL is implementing a new “unidentified infraction” rule so that if the officials cannot identify an infraction but know one must have been committed, a 25 yard or 3/4 of the distance to the goal line penalty will be imposed…

He’s gone from being regarded as on track for the HOF to a player no one wants to touch with a ten foot pole at 33.
Have his skills just deserted him with age? Did he always suck and just got to take up a lot of shots and get the volume numbers? Has the game evolved in a way that he can’t keep up with?

MrScratch

I think a little of all of the above. He’s always been fairly one dimensional as a scorer. If you look at his track record, his teams have never really done that great. The Nuggets actually improved after they traded him. Only so long can you blame not having the right fit around you. And it’s hard to find a team in legitimate contention where he would fit. The only one that would be a ‘maybe’ I see is New Orleans. Especially now that he’s shown he’s not willing to be a role guy and isn’t the scorer he once… Read more »

Gillette Stadium is hosting its first marathon on Sept. 28. The Boston Marathon qualifier is open to 100 runners. Participants will run more than 100 laps on the warning track around the field.
The track is USA Track & Field certified and will be the first Boston Marathon qualifier ever run entirely in a NFL stadium.
All runners must meet a $5,000 fundraising goal and the proceeds will benefit the New England Patriots Foundation.
The race will begin at 5 p.m.

Two players that will be in a holding pattern with the moratorium lifted, Lance Stephenson and JaVale McGee. Expect the Lakers to exhaust free agent/trade options with the remaining $5.6M in cap space before they sign the 2 players. Signing both now and room goes away.

Brazil had 9 shots on goal and scored once, that’s why they lost. You can’t execute that poorly and beat a team like Belgium the way they have been playing. Some of those missed shots were as bad as I have ever seen for Brazil.

HunterCenter

I agree. But I bet Casemiro slows down most of those Belgian counters. Plus the own goal was on Fernandinho (I think) and Casemiro is far superior in the air. And the Belgian keeper saved far more shots than Brazil missed.

Best goalie in the tourney hands down! Brazil were outclassed in spacing on defense plain and simple but even with that, you just can’t miss so many open shots at this phase of the game. Coutinho and Augosto won’t sleep well for years, it would have been better to have missed a penalty really.

Brazil deserved to lose this game, they missed two open shots and scored on their own net. You just can’t do that against an offensive powerhouse like Belgium. Belgium executed when they needed to and Brazil didn’t. Props to the Belgium’s counter attack and goalie. They are easily the favorites now.

If the ball’s already out, it’s a throw in (or goal kick or corner kick if the end line) If the foul happens after the ball is out, the ref can give a card if the foul warrants it, but it’s still just a thrown in, not a free kick.

From Jason Jones, Sacramento Bee: [The Kings] have looked to make deals, but are determined to avoid multiyear contracts that would affect next year’s salary cap… With no deals imminent, the Kings will focus on the trade market, looking to take advantage of having about $17 million under the cap to absorb a contract that could land a coveted veteran small forward. A deal could also mean taking on a contract another team finds undesirable and would be willing to package with a first-round pick, which the Kings lack in 2019..

Melo?

hugo #FreeBoney

Interesting guess. I don’t think OKC have enough to attach to make the length of Melo’s deal palatable. Its not that SAC would mind taking him right now, its the future salary.
The Melo thing is weird. OKC supposedly traded for him as part of a last ditch effort to get Westbrook (and George) to stay. Well Westbrook re-upped immediately, George chose to stay. Couldn’t they have accomplished that without getting stuck with Melo? Or do you think the trade made a difference?

MrScratch

There is no future salary. It’s one year. The problem is that it’s 27.9M. The Kings would have to send back $11M (Randolph). Which wouldn’t be bad except that it cuts 1/3rd of the Thunder’s tax savings.

The Bulls are the only team that could virtually absorb him. And, if I’m Chicago, I’d want Ferguson and 2020 and 2022 unprotected picks and send them back Justin Holiday (who they could use). And, if I’m OKC, I’d just do it.

go back to when he “hurt” his hand – the game that night, he grabbed a defensive rebound, took the ball up the floor and hoisted a 3 trying to win it by himself (clank). he had much better shooting team mates open but chose to play hero-ball. it was so bad that i’m guessing more than stevens spoke to him about it. thus, he decides to punch a mirror in his hotel room. out for a couple months – great job, marcus.

That’s definitely his agent talking, with the market for RFAs being so terrible this year. The standard procedure once you get a QO from your team is to go shop around and bring back a contract for the team to potentially match. Pretty much every team besides the Bulls can’t afford to give Smart what he’s looking for, so he’s out of luck on that front. So he’s faced with either signing the QO or trying to guilt the C’s into extending him at the rate he wants. I think he’ll end up signing the QO when all is said… Read more »

I never got the “room temp beer in summer” thing until a very beer savvy friend poured me a brew made to be drunk that way (think it was an actual German dubble but can’t recall for sure)–one was cold from the frig, one was room temp. The cold one tasted awful, the warm one was simply wonderful to drink. So the beer needs to be intended to be served warm. The problem is the overwhelming bulk of “German” imports are NOT made to be drunk cold.

No wonder the NFL could not identify it.

I think Jules was claiming that he bearly took anything.

NFL denied his appeal. I guess they thought his situation was the Polar opposite of Sherman.

I just hope he didn’t take too much of it. His body could go into Kodiak arrest!

I also hope he does not spend every night for the first month of the season going cubbing. he needs to just rest up and take it easy. Nightcubs are the last place he needs to be.
