Yet Another Jersey Number Post

-by DNOMN8R314

The title says it all.

Like I did with the Patriots’ veteran offseason acquisitions earlier this spring, I’m going to predict the jersey numbers of this year’s rookies, both draft picks and UDFAs. The rookies have been wearing random (not actually random) numbers for OTAs, and the wait for some of us (me) for actual numbers is becoming tedious, thereby necessitating (not actually necessary) this article.

A reminder: During the offseason, two players on two different sides of the ball can wear the same number. For simplicity, I’m omitting possible duplicates from the “available numbers” sections.

Isaiah Wynn
Position: T/G
Allowed numbers: 60-79
College number: 77
Available numbers in New England: 63

While tackle Tony Garcia wore (and vacated) 63, I don’t think Wynn will wear a number in the 60s, at least for now. If he’s to double with a defensive player, it will have to be Adam Butler (70) or Danny Shelton (71); I’ll guess he pairs with Butler and wears 70.

Sony Michel
Position: RB
Allowed numbers: 20-49
College number: 1
Available numbers in New England: 29, 42, 44, 45

With all the Alvin Kamara comparisons, a part of me wants to see Michel wearing 41, which he could double with Cyrus Jones. While 29 is the obvious possibility, I don’t think that would be a good look for an elusive-style running back in the Patriots’ font. Thus I’m for now guessing 42.

Duke Dawson
Position: CB
Allowed numbers: 20-49
College number: 7
Available numbers in New England: 29, 42, 44, 45

I have no such scruples regarding 29 for cornerbacks – I remember the Sterling Moore days. 29 is my pick for Dawson.

Ja’Whaun Bentley
Position: LB
Allowed numbers: 40-59, 90-99
College number: 4 (35 his freshman year)
Available numbers in New England: 42, 44, 45, 51, 92, 97

While Bentley’s collegiate 4 is almost asking for him to wear a 40s number, I feel as the first linebacker drafted, he’d be more in line to wear a 50s number; the only one available is 51, so that’s my guess.

Christian Sam
Position: LB
Allowed numbers: 40-59, 90-99
College number: 2
Available numbers in New England: 42, 44, 45, 51, 92, 97

Since I’ve given Bentley 51, that leaves 40s and 90s numbers for Sam. Linebackers have increasingly trended towards wearing 40s numbers in recent years, so I’ll go there. I don’t like 42 as a linebacker number (plus I already gave it to Michel), and purely guessing at this point, I’ve selected 45.

Braxton Berrios
Position: WR
Allowed numbers: 10-19, 80-89
College number: 8
Available numbers in New England: 10, 14, 16, 85

Berrios said shortly after being drafted that he’d try for #10. Sounds good to me.

Danny Etling
Position: QB
Allowed numbers: 1-19
College number: 16
Available numbers in New England: 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 14, 16

Finally, a player whose college number is available in New England. Should Etling keep his #16, which I’m guessing he will, it will undoubtedly increase the Matt Cassel comparisons.

Keion Crossen
Position: CB
Allowed numbers: 20-49
College number: 35
Available numbers in New England: 29, 42, 44, 45

While I’ve still got 44 free with my guesses, I think Crossen will double 35 with Mike Gillislee and stick with his college digits.

Ryan Izzo
Position: TE
Allowed numbers: 40-49, 80-89
College number: 81
Available numbers in New England: 42, 44, 45, 85

Tight ends most often wear 80s numbers, so I’ve given Izzo the only free number in that range, 85.

John Atkins
Position: DT
Allowed numbers: 50-79, 90-99
College number: 97
Available numbers in New England: 51, 63, 92, 97

I see a 97 on that list. Sounds good.

Corey Bojorquez
Position: P
Allowed numbers: 1-19
College number: 30
Available numbers in New England: 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 14, 16

This one is literally “just throw a dart to pick a number.” I went with 9, partly because it’s worn in New England so rarely.

Trent Harris
Position: DE
Allowed numbers: 50-79, 90-99
College number: 33
Available numbers in New England: 51, 63, 92, 97

Harris is wearing #63 for OTAs. He can keep it.

Frank Herron
Position: DT
Allowed numbers: 50-79, 90-99
College number: 97
Available numbers in New England: 51, 63, 92, 97

The actual reason I didn’t give Harris #92 is because I think it would be better for a defensive tackle, so it’s Herron’s.

J.C. Jackson
Position: CB
Allowed numbers: 20-49
College number: 7
Available numbers in New England: 29, 42, 44, 45

Again, cornerbacks don’t often wear 40s numbers (I know there are several exceptions), so i had him double up and gave him 33 (shared with Jeremy Hill).

A.J. Moore
Position: CB
Allowed numbers: 20-49
College number: 30
Available numbers in New England: 29, 42, 44, 45

For the same reason as Jackson, I’ve given Moore 38 to double with Brandon Bolden.

Ralph Webb
Position: RB
Allowed numbers: 20-49
College number: 7
Available numbers in New England: 29, 42, 44, 45

Now, a running back wearing #44 would look pretty sweet, so that number finally comes off the board for Webb.

Shane Wimann
Position: TE
Allowed numbers: 40-49, 80-89
College number: 35
Available numbers in New England: 42, 44, 45, 85

With my guesses Wimann has no choice but to double, and I’ve paired him with Harvey Langi and the number 48.

I was a little disappointed to see Kraft distributing AFC Championship rings to the players, we did lose the Super Bowl after that therefore it’s a very “Colts” move to do IMO.

rondo723

I think conference championship rings are pretty customary. It is still a great team accomplishment and worth celebrating. Hanging a banner for LOSING one is next level sadness.

I am moderately encouraged by the performance of the young players on Team USA in Lyon today. They still have no offensive concept on the team, but they appear to have better athletes than they have had in previous generations. When will USA Soccer grow up?

I like a lot of the young kids but let’s give them time to grow. We’ve seen what even one year of playing profesionally in the Bundesliga did for McKennie and Pulisic. I look forward to seeing what Josh Sargent can do next year for Bremen. Shaq Moore looks like a smarter version of DeAndre Yedlin. Hopefully with the growth in popularity of the MLS and soccer in general, we’ll be sending more kids overseas in the coming years. Oh yeah, and I really love Tyler Adams game. I hope he goes to RB Leipzig and flourishes!

Still an impressive result. The kids did well. They defended well in the first half and got an opportunistic goal just before the half. In the second, they actually started to control play and set up some nice chances early on. Bobby Wood scored and the crowd was stunned but the flag went up and it was just barely off-sides. France is loaded and finally broke through but we can be proud of that performance.

My take on all these partly-true and mostly completely false stories that we get all this off season about tensions within the Patriots: there are people on the fringe of the organisation who believe that the end of the reign is approaching and want to be the ones who either play a large role in it or at least report on it. All in all we are talking about pity people who need to the flashlight of the Pats success to exist and be somebody. It is of course true that the magic triangle of BB-TB12-Kraft will get dissolve within… Read more »

If Kurkjian’s story is true (and I understand why all of you not in Boston wouldn’t believe it – because you’re not here living it 24/7) then lawyers are probably putting together BB’s buyout. He’s not going to quit and leave $ on the table, so Kraft has to pay him off.

Unbelievable sequence of events since the Garop meddling by Kraft. This is all on him.

Hopefully it’s not true.

MrLucky
Member

How can what he said be true if BB was in NY and he said they were having a closed door meeting? Also all the legit Pats beat writers said it wasn’t true. Obviously the guy had bad sources. More manufactured drama by the fake media.

bring

Apparently it didn’t all go down just yesterday – at this point I’m simply hoping BB stays through the season.

MrLucky
Member

No way Brady or Gronk would have been at OTAs this week with something like that hanging over them. If you’re from Boston you should know how cutthroat and idiotic the media is here, especially regarding the Pats. And I don’t think BB would wait for a buyout if Kraft and Brady were calling the shots, he’d already be gone.

MrLucky

Your opinion is based off unnamed sources and one dummy on Twitter while actual journalists who cover the Pats are saying they are completely false. I think we all know there is dissension behind the scenes, and while not ideal, I’m not gonna go jumping off a bridge until something happens. They were 1 defensive stop away from winning another SB 5 months ago and everyone reported to mandatory camp.

MrLucky
Member
Free agent

Well they are voluntary so they probably will skip them. I think I’ll believe the inside sources instead of some hack reporter and a guy on reddit and they have all shot down the rumors 100%. I think you and Felger and Mazz are the only ones giving them any credibility.

dyims

Redditlover1982 brought to the forefront that there are a tremendous amount of “people” out there that are trolling big time. These people don’t know or care if the story is factual or how it will affect those that are the principles of the “story”. And don’t get me started about using ‘reliable sources” or I heard it from a friend/relative/bed partner of the person(s).

He was a cool guy that will truly be missed by me. He once profiled a Portuguese owned hole-in-the-wall pizza place in Cambridge on “No Reservations”. It was right down the street from me. Bomb food. Afterwards, the owner sold it and it went downhill. Now it’s out of business. Not Tony’s fault though. He was the best.

I prefer mine with heat, so I do a lot of Barrel Proof/Cask Strength, but for someone just getting into bourbons, I’d stick with some of the heavy wheated bourbons like Eagle Rare, Blanton’s, and Weller.

Get back to me when you have Quicksilver Messenger Service on Klipshorns powered by a McIntosh tube amp at cranked volume! Piker!
