Assorted Spring Trivia

-by DNOMN8R314

Spring is always a slower time in the NFL offseason, so to fill that time, here are some assorted trivia questions related (usually) to the 2018 Patriots. (I will include hints between the questions and answers.)

  1. In the 2018 draft, Bill Belichick drafted a player from three different schools in the same state (Duke Dawson, Florida; Braxton Berrios, Miami; Ryan Izzo, Florida State). With the Patriots, Belichick has only done this once before. In what year?
  2. Last season, the Patriots drafted only four players, none of whom attended the same school. When was the last year no two Patriots draft selections were from the same school?
  3. What is the highest number of selections the Patriots under Belichick have made in a year where they did not draft two players from the same school?
  4. Twice, the Belichick-led Patriots have made three draft selections from one school in the same year. Name the schools.
  5. What is the only school from which Bill Belichick has made multiple draft selections in more than one year?
  6. Of the following 12 schools, from which has Bill Belichick drafted multiple players in the same year?
    • Alabama
    • Arkansas
    • Fresno State
    • Florida
    • Georgia
    • LSU
    • Miami (FL.)
    • NC State
    • Notre Dame
    • Rutgers
    • Texas A&M
    • TCU
  7. In the Belichick era, the Patriots have selected multiple first-round picks from three schools. Name the schools.
  8. Stepping away from the draft: Entering the 2018 season, Tom Brady has thrown at least one touchdown pass to 68 players (70 if you include the playoffs). Within those players, Brady has thrown at least one touchdown pass to all but four jersey numbers that can be worn by wide receivers (10-19 and 80-89). Two of those numbers are 89 (retired by New England) and 12 (which Brady himself of course wears). Name the other two numbers.
  9. Including his playoff touchdown receivers along with the regular season, Brady has completed touchdown passes to nearly all ranges of numbers. (For the purpose of this and the next question, my definition of “range” is “set of positive numbers from x0 to x9” – 10-19, 20-29, and so on.) What are the only ranges of numbers to which Brady has not yet thrown a touchdown pass?
  10. In the regular season, to what ranges has Brady never completed a pass? (Not a touchdown pass, a pass.)

In case you’re having trouble, here are some hints.

  1. The first time, the state was also Florida.
  2. Two players from that draft are still with New England.
  3. The year was 2009.
  4. Five of the six total selections were defensive players.
  5. It’s one of the schools from which he once took three players.
  6. There is at least one from which he has and at least one from which he has not, and there are more “has” than “has not” in the list.
  7. 2004’s Patriots first-rounders are from two of the schools.
  8. Both are in the 10-19 range.
  9. There are two ranges.
  10. Remember that this is regular season only.

And the answers:

  1. The year was 2004, during which Belichick drafted Vince Wilfork (Miami), Guss Scott (Florida), and P.K. Sam (Florida State).
  2. The 2012 draft class, consisting of Chandler Jones (Syracuse), Dont’a Hightower (Alabama), Tavon Wilson (Illinois), Jake Bequette (Arkansas), Nate Ebner (Ohio State), Alfonzo Dennard (Nebraska), and Jeremy Ebert (Northwestern).
  3. In 2009, the Patriots took 12 players in the NFL draft, all from different colleges (Oregon, Boston College, UConn, Houston, UNC, USF, Penn State, Louisville, Hawaii, Kentucky, Kent State, Georgia Tech).
  4. The schools are Florida and Rutgers. In 2010, Belichick selected Gators Brandon Spikes, Jermaine Cunningham, and Aaron Hernandez, while in 2013, he took Logan Ryan, Duron Harmon, and Steve Beauharnais from Rutgers.
  5. Bill Belichick has selected multiple Florida Gators in three Patriots drafts – 2006 (Chad Jackson and Jeremy Mincey), 2010 (see above), and 2014 (Dominique Easley and Jon Halapio).
  6. All of them except Alabama.
    • Arkansas: 2015 (Trey Flowers & A.J. Derby)
    • Fresno State: 2005 (Logan Mankins & James Sanders)
    • Florida: 2006, 2010, 2014 (see above)
    • Georgia: 2018 (Isaiah Wynn & Sony Michel)
    • LSU: 2002 (Rohan Davey & Jarvis Green)
    • Miami: 2007 (Brandon Meriweather & Kareem Brown)
    • NC State: 2016 (Joe Thuney & Jacoby Brissett)
    • Notre Dame: 2001 (Brock Williams & Jabari Holloway)
    • Rutgers: 2013 (see above)
    • Texas A&M: 2003 (Ty Warren & Bethel Johnson)
    • TCU: 2011 (Marcus Cannon & Malcolm Williams)
  7. The schools are Georgia (Richard Seymour 2001, Ben Watson 2004, and this year’s Wynn/Michel combo), Miami (Wilfork 2004, Meriweather 2007), and Colorado (Daniel Graham 2002, Nate Solder 2011).
  8. Aside from 12 and 89, Brady has never completed a touchdown pass to a player wearing #13 or #16.
  9. The only ranges to which Brady has not yet completed a touchdown pass are 1-9 and 90-99. (Mike Vrabel, who wore #50, covers 50-59; Tom Ashworth (#68) takes care of 60-69; and Nate Solder (#77) is the only one from 70-79.)
  10. None of them! Believe it or not, Brady has completed at least one pass to every range of uniform number in the regular season. (In the 4th-and-2 game in 2009, Brady completed two passes to Isaiah Stanback, who wore #9 that game. Defensive tackle Dan Klecko (#90) had three catches in the 2004 season. And while Solder’s touchdown catch came in the playoffs, guard Logan Mankins (#70) caught a deflected pass in 2007.)

I hope you had fun with this quiz. Enjoy the relaxation!

Anyone have an opinion on FA LB Mychal Kendricks? Seems like a decent player with more speed than any of the Pats’ LBs. I’m still hoping to see a sideline-to-sideline pursuit LB on the team.

Closest thing they have now is Marquis Flowers. They need another one.

Their offensive scheme is just junk. Harden or Paul dribbles down and launches a 3 or, if they can’t get one off in 20 seconds, it’s one pass and a desperation shot.

When Harden shoots .415 and .244 3%, you’re in trouble. Amazing they got to 7 games but GS didn’t play well a lot of the time.

hugo #FreeBoney

Houston’s defense was better than their offense. They harried Durant and forced him to take bad shots. Capela protected the rim well. Tucker played well.

Shaggy

Managed to win 65 games in the Western Conference with a “junk offensive scheme”. And managed to take the defending champs who have 4 all NBA level stars to 7 games. And didn’t have Paul for the last two. The Warriors didn’t play well because the Rockets are really good themselves. Sign me up for for one of those junk systems anytime

Deadsmack #NotDone

The Rockets are loaded of talent, maybe the best roster in the NBA. But their offensive schemes are so weak and predictable.
Brad Stevens with that team would have won the NBA title.

MrScratch

They won 65 games because James Harden was 6th in FGA and 8th in FGM. He was 1st in 3PA and 1st 3PA. He was 1st in FTA and 1st in FTM. When you have 1A and 1B coming down the floor in a spread iso, jacking 3’s or one pass and a shot is up or dribbling the clock down to seconds and trying to force something… if you don’t have James Harden you might not win 25 games. Cleveland doesn’t even intentionally do that with LeBron. As we saw, if they can get production out of other guys,… Read more »

Celtics in 2019 🙂

JLStokes

I’d love to see an Easter Conference Finals next year with Boston vs Philly with these line-ups:

Boston: Kyrie/Hayward/Tatum/Brown/Horford

Philly: LeBron/Kawhi/Simmons/Reddick/Emiid

That’d be amazing.

hugo #FreeBoney
Member

I love our guys but if Philly had that lineup they’d sweep the Celtics. Impossible scenario anyway.

JLStokes
Member
Free agent

Totally disagree. Simmons still can’t shoot. LeBron can’t pick on any single player (i.e. Rozier) and Reddick would constantly get undressed by all the younger, more athletic players on the Celtics.

All 5 Celtics in that line-up can score from pretty much any point on the court, the Sixers can’t say that.

MrScratch
Member
Free agent

A package of Covington, Fultz, Saric and the #11 would be pretty attractive to land Kawhi. But they wouldn’t have any space to keep Redick too. And they’d be desperately thin from there.

JLStokes

This scenario is saying Reddick takes significantly less to chase a ring for a year.

They will have cap space if they make no moves. If they trade away those salaries for Leonard they will still have basically the same cap space. Maybe not max level space but enough to keep Redick if they really want to

USA beat Bolivia 3-0 yesterday with a lineup of talented young pups. Even though they won’t be at the World Cup, I’m ridiculously excited about the future of US Soccer. Remember the name Josh Sargent. He is going to be a star on the world level. I think he may ultimately be better than Christian Pulisic. Between, Pulisic, Sargent, Tim Weah, Keaton Parks, Weston McKennie, and others, the future is bright.

Smart is picking now to go for his big $. That’s fine because this roster is going to get tight quick. With Irving and Rozier, we are set at Guard (with any serviceable bench players). Smart is tough and I like him, but he’s not an impact player on Offense like Rozier. You gotta build around Tatum, Brown and (hopefully) Hayward. With his style of play, Smart will probably continue to be injury-bugged.

I agree with Reiss, the biggest problem with this whole Marsh thing is that the Pats badly missed the mark when scouting the player and projecting his fit, both culturally and performance-wise. It happens. No GM/Coach/Scout is perfect, but this miss was obviously egregious.

hugo #FreeBoney
Member

A 5th and a 7th aren’t high picks. But they’re bullets in the chamber, chances to hit on someone who builds depth, fliers on a keeper. Getting nothing out of Marsh is a bigger L than it seems at face value.

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

agreed. it’s the opportunity cost. at a time when the Pats didn’t have many picks to be playing around with. then they had to use assets to recoup those picks.

zoocore
Member
Free agent

Yeah, but we also have to think about those UDFA, bargain basement pickups, etc. that turn out to play quite well in this system.

HunterCenter
Member

right, and assets like 5th and 7th round picks are the things we use to find those guys, often. but they don’t typically miss on the “cultural fit” like they did with Marsh.

Pauly
Guest
Free agent
Well, “cultural fits” for the Pats may actually be a by-product of developing UDFAs and 7th rounders to fill out depth positions on the team vs. trading late picks like they have the last few years. Those UDFAs and 7th rounders that make it understand already it ain’t about fun (or about having fun only at certain times) and didn’t care because they just wanted to keep playing and get paid. Vets you trade for–especially if they think they will just get picked up elsewhere–would seem less likely to still have that mentality (with many glorious exceptions like Wes Welker,… Read more »

Got my chuckle for the day thanks to (and at the expense of) ESPN. In that article McClellin says the following: The Marsing, Idaho, native had signed with the Patriots as a free agent in 2016 after four seasons with the Bears. He said his two years with the franchise was the highlight of his career. “It was awesome, first year we won the Super Bowl, can’t complain about that,” said McClellin, who played… Read more »

JLStokes

Here’s the thing:

That Celtics line up COULD defensively hold the Warriors to just enough points for them to be outscored. All 5 can score basically whenever they like too.

They can beat the Warriors.

hugo #FreeBoney

We’re the Walmart Great Value brand version of the Warriors at full health
Irving ~ Steph Curry
Hayward ~ Klay Thompson
Brown ~ Andre Iguodala
Tatum ~ Kevin Durant
Horford ~ Draymond Green
Other than Horford > Green, they have better versions at every position. But in terms of style, we’re actually pretty similar.

JLStokes

I totally agree with this comparison, but I think the Celtics, generally, play better defense.

JLStokes

Morris needs to learn how to make the extra pass.

There isn’t a shot that exists that he won’t take…to the detriment of the team sometimes.

hugo #FreeBoney
Member
Free agent

Morris is a black hole on offense, and I btch about him a lot. But his defense/rebounding/overall game in the playoffs was eye opening. And he lived up to the LeBron stopper thing. LeBron was visibly avoiding him. You’ve got to keep him after that, no?

JLStokes
Member
Free agent

Of course, he just needs to be coached into taking better shots.

He literally causes long lulls in the offense (especially in game 6) where the other team gets his misses and scores in transition.

hugo #FreeBoney
Member
Free agent

I don’t. Iggy > Brown defensively, Thompson > Hayward. Those are both decisive in favor of GS. Green > Horford, not a dig on Al either, Green is just that good. Durant > Tatum. GS probably defend better at all five positions tbh.
Our edge is that we’re deeper with one on one scorers. Hayward doesn’t fit the pure shooting/defense box like Klay but he’s a better one on one player. Irving is better than Curry one on one. Horford is waaaay better offensively than Draymond Green.

JLStokes
Member
Free agent

I disagree on Iggy. He’ll be one year old, while Brown is not even in his prime and is definitely more athletic to compensate for his shortcomings.

I can’t speak too much on Hayward because I didn’t get to see him play all that much.

The jury’s still out on Tatum. He needs to put on like 20 pounds of muscle.

hugo #FreeBoney
Member
Free agent

Those are what ifs. But Iggy is better in that role NOW.
To add to that thought. Boston’s defense was marginally better than the Warriors defense on paper. But Boston’s best defenders outside of Horford? Smart and Baynes, who don’t factor into this comparison.
Part of what makes the GSW so nasty is that they do what they do, out of one lineup.

JLStokes

Of course “now”. I was more project next season.

MrLucky

GS is so unlikable and LeBron is insufferable. Zero interest in the series. Figure LeBron will win a game or 2 by himself but the series will never be close.

itsBradyBaby

Well GS is not unlikable to me , I think they are very entertaining to watch.

MrLucky

Well on the court they are fun to watch because it’s an all star team with 2 top 5 players in the league, but I’ll never pull for a team with Durant or Draymond on it.

hugo #FreeBoney
Member
Free agent

I like watching GS play. But yeah, its anti-climactic.
What’s wild about the Warriors is they don’t need things to go right, they have built-in redundancy on top of how good they are. Steph Curry’s been banged up. Iggy is out. Thompson gets three fouls in 10 mins in game 7 and he’s their key defender without Iguodala on top of his scoring… no problem.

PatriotPrideBoy

Lue cost them game 4 in last year’s finals. Then Durant made a YOLO three and that was the beginning of the end in Cleveland

JLStokes

Since I was called out:

Bring, I never thought they WOULD trade Kyrie and keep Rozier, I was just discussing the possibility that they COULD do it. It was within the context of trying to make sure they get SOMETHING because Rozier’s contract is up next season.

Now, at the time, Rozier wasn’t playing like the hot garbage he was during most of this past series.

I mean, we all saw it, Kyrie on this team would have prevented those long lulls of scoring Boston had throughout the playoffs. Kyrie AND Hayward would ERASE that.

Smart wants to get paid. I was hoping the combination of not a lot of $ out there plus better RFAs, would mean no offers for him. But I’m starting to think he’s gone. Looking at the Cs recent draft, I’m guessing Ojeleye was a hedge against not re-signing Smart (physical wing who can defend multiple positions).

hugo #FreeBoney

I still hope they can find a way to keep Smart, and move Rozier, rather than vice versa. There’s only one ball. And Smart doesn’t need it to make an impact but Rozier does.

bring
Member

If Smart leaves then Rozier gets all the backup point minutes. In which case we should probably expect the identical scenario play out after next season – Rozier signing elsewhere because Cs won’t match offer sheet from another team.

Pick 27 this year will most likely be best available point.

They better or it’s pretty much over. And they’ll on the wrong side of history where they’ll be forever known as the team that lost to a true expansion team in the SCF.

BOLD prediction: The winner of Game 2 will win the Cup.

Wow, I missed the third quarter. What happened?

They missed 27 3’s in a row? You can’t win that way. I guess the old hockey saying “win the 3rd, win the game” applies here.

The thing with Cassius Marsh is that a guy who got dealt for a 5th and 7th at cut down from Seattle and then got released 2 months later, really doesn’t have any credibility. Seems the only reason SF gave him $7.7M over 2 years (not a huge deal but not a deserved one), is that they had money to burn. It really just looks like sour gripes.

Somebody quoted him in the comments section on ESPN from Sept 2017: ” “It’s just a different style of coaching. It’s more straight to business. Just a different style. Over there (Seattle), it’s a lot more about fun. It’s a lot more light-hearted. It’s lot more like college. I feel like this is the ultimate pro’s pro team. Every team I’m sure and every organization is different, but here, they take their ball seriously. Losses are rare here, and there’s a reason for that. It’s because they come in every day with a very serious agenda to get better.” The… Read more »

Well part of his problem seems to be how he was used, but he had 3 sacks in Seattle in 3 seasons and they obviously looked at him in camp in that role and decided he was expendable. And now considering that he is up to a whopping 6 sacks for his career, it’s not really a “told ya so”.

Winning is hard in the NFL. 7 consecutive appearances in the AFC championship means you have to forgo “fun” and be focused.

Also, he’s not the first to say NE is not a fun org. Why a depth player’s comments are generating this much buzz is beyond me.

my thoughts exactly. I saw his comments and said who cares he is a loser. I guess it is a slow time of year and people need to talk about something for some reason
