2018 Mock Draft Contest Results

-by DNOMN8R314

With UDFA signings finally official, it’s time to announce the winner of

THE 2018 NEPFF PATRIOTS-ONLY MOCK DRAFT CONTEST.

This was widely expected to be the year the Patriots took their Quarterback Of The Future™, took a defensive stud or two in the first round, and possibly traded up for more high-quality players. Naturally, Bill Belichick waited until the seventh round to draft a quarterback, drafted a left tackle and running back with his two first-round picks, and traded down about four or five or twenty-nine times. This meant that most mocks ended up being completely and utterly wrong, only more wrong than in earlier years. Our eight entries were no exceptions.

Remember those two opportunities for bonus points, guessing New England’s first-round picks and drafted quarterbacks? We all whiffed. A combined zero for forty-eight. Excellent job, us.

In fact, in the eight mocks, there were a total of seven correct guesses:

  • Sony Michel – one
  • Duke Dawson – two
  • Christian Sam – two
  • Braxton Berrios – one
  • Keion Crossen – one

That was it. And none of us got a round correct, either. The final scores were:

12, 10, 8, 5, 0, 0, 0, 0.

Man, this was an anticlimactic year.

Anyway, on to the

RESULTS:

In the first two years of its running, this contest produced one winner: Hugo was my homeboy. In going for the threepeat, Hugo was the only participant to name three players correctly, putting Crossen, Berrios, and Dawson on his list of eleven. However, Hugo took a unique approach by trying to guess exclusively UDFAs; since he managed to get three drafted players, he received half points for each, giving him 10… and second place.

So who took the title this year?

To answer, let me ask you one question: How would you abbreviate the name of the Patriots’ first 2018 draft pick?

That’s right: I. Wynn.

I WIN.

Yep, your author DNOMN8R314 finally won one of my own contests, all because I put Christian Sam as the second player on my list for 12 points. I’ve already broken out the noisemakers and confetti.

memokerobi took the bronze with 8 points, seven for Sam and one for Dawson, while evaldes101993 came in fourth with a 5-point correct guess of Michel.

Well done everyone and thank you for participating. Results can be found here, and a list of all guessed players can be found here.

We’re on to training camp.

EDIT:

I forgot to mention the entry by MasterAndCommander, a.k.a. the “Loophole Entry.”

The rules as I wrote them state: “Send me the list of players in order of likelihood you think the Patriots will draft them, and note which round you think each player will be drafted in.”

Since I did not say to send the names of players, MAC’s entry was:

  1. Best Player Available. (round 1)
  2. Best Player Available. (round 1)
  3. Best Player Available. (round 2)
  4. Best Player Available. (any round)
  5. Best Player Available. (any round)
  6. Best Player Available. (any round)
  7. Best Player Available. (any round)
  8. Best Player Available. (any round)
  9. Best Player Available. (any round)
  10. Best Player Available. (any round)
  11. Best Player Available. (any round)

For sheer audacity, I am awarding MAC a one-time-only Loophole Abuse Championship Award. This award does not exist and cannot be redeemed for goods and services.

I will be closing that loophole next year.

How sweet is it that both the Sixers and Lakers passed on Brown and Tatum?

I’m in my late 40’s. There were no good US sports cars during my impressionable years (EPA sanctions in early 70’s killed the muscle-car era of the late 60’s), so that’s why older Porsches are selling for crazy $ nowadays. It’s what guys my age always wanted to own.

Wow Dino’s over 50? I wouldn’t have guessed. I thought he was in his 30s.

Well I guess he can spend his retirement savings fixing up his Porsche engine.

The Rockets look really good tonight, although I recognize taking 1 of 2 in Houston is a win for GS.

They are real good. Better than us or the Cavs on paper. Just hard to see them maintaining the shooting edge they’ve had tonight.

Harden hangs around pouting because he doesn’t get a foul call. GS pushes the ball up the court. Chris Paul gives a foul, now has 3. If Paul gets to 5 fouls, and the game gets close, the trickle down effect of Harden acting like a diva could be significant.

Golden State’s half court defense has actually been OK. Its the turnovers that are killing them.

I just turned it on for the last couple minutes. I saw a few possessions with no defenders standing between the Rockets and the basket. I figure Golden State’s game plan must be 3 > 2?

BMWs are tiny inside. I know that wouldn’t bother you, but every male in my family is over six feet tall. My Nissan Versa, which cost under $13K brand new, has way, way more cabin space. I can’t stand BMWs.

Nope, but I have saved up for a new-to-me car, and have drifted above $20,000 for a BMW 228i, so I am looking in that price neighborhood anyway, and I have always wanted to drive a Porsche, so…. Talking about a 2009 or 2010 model.

I love the design of the Audi 5! Sexy beast. Like the interior a lot, but it’s too wide for my cluttered garage, and I don’t like all-wheel-drive. I’d prefer something lighter and more agile. But I do love the S5 looks.

Usually dont give much credence to “all time stats” but the Celtics are 37-0 in a series when they go up 2-0……..thats an amazing number even if it doesnt correlate with the present Celtics team.
This team is a fun to watch.

Funny how the Cavs were lauded for those deadline trades that shook them up and gave them all this athleticism and now George Hill is the only player they acquired who is really getting PT and he’s scored 8 points with 1 assist over these first 2 games.

I don’t get why Nance doesn’t play. That and the Turkish kid. But yeah, their roster has been a dud and outside of James himself its not changing anytime soon.

MrScratch
Member

It’s why it’s virtually inconceivable that James comes back next year.

Hill is $19M, Thompson is $17M, Smith $15M, Clarkson $12.5M and all have 2 more years to go.

There is absolutely nothing Cleveland can do to get anyone outside of the lotto pick.

Hill and Smith’s contracts are only guaranteed in 2019-2020 for a total of $4.8 million. Neither will be on the team in two years. But next year they are still a wreck

Cedi needs to play, at least he brings energy and effort. And he’s better than Jeff Green. But like I said, remove Lebron and the Cavs are a 15-20 win team

rondo723

I think at the time any move would have improved them, so it was hard to disentangle the effect of a shake-up from the actual players brought in. Hood, Clarkson, and Nance are pretty limited players and are unable to create their own shots or create for others. Nance could potentially help on D, Hood is meh, and Clarkson is a disaster. I’m surprised at how poorly Hill is doing to be honest. He looks extremely tentative out there.

Hindsight being 20/20, and assuming Thomas and Shumpert were lost, I still think they’d be better off with playoff vets like Wade, Frye and Crowder than with these guys who are doing nothing. This group wasn’t getting them past the Warriors and now may not even get them past Boston.

I bet there’s a handful of people who value being a “career Patriot”. It also allows you to maintain a presence in the area after retirement and gain good favor.

Drew Bledsoe,
Ben Coates
Jon Morris
Ty Law
Mike Haynes
Willie McGinest
Nick Buoniconti

They all played on other teams and most finished their careers on other teams.

Most of those players were way more visible on the field to fans than Light & Seymour. Jon Morris did play by play for the Pats for years and was a senior committee selection.

It’s funny because people also said Spoelstra was Elite when they had Lebron. I think Lebron’s coaches are puppets and that they’re not really coaching, just riding Lebron’s coattails.

Miami seems to overachieve under spo. And before Bron left, he got the Heatles to be a top defensive club. Bosh in particular improved a lot. I think his resume can stand alone.

Lol. Spot on! Pretty much every coach that has coached Lebron has had a similar look on the bench. I rarely ever saw the coaches fired up, barking out plays, or anything like that…it was usually just sitting there watching.

Yeah I guess having those young legs is coming in handy.
I wonder if they’ll consider bringing Tatum off the bench if the Cavs start Thompson again. He seemed to get swallowed up a bit against that lineup, then thrived in the 2nd quarter.

Also be a credit to Brad’s minute distributions in the regular season. It’s easy to play Horford 35 mpg and not 31 mpg, to win a few more games. Thibs would play him 37 mpg. But he didn’t and Horford looks young out there.

Everyone sort of does at this point. If you look at all 4 teams, all of the primary guys are playing at least over 30 a game. Only the specialists are splitting minutes. Durant played 40 in WCF Gm 1 and Thompson played 42.

Someone needs to tell Brian Windhorst that the Boston media aren’t the ones pumping Brad Stevens – it’s the Celtics players. Here’s a quote from an article he just wrote, “when some (players) get tired of coach Brad Stevens getting all the credit all the time.” He was referencing the Cavs’ “fatigue” and saying it will eventually come to the Celtics too.

Really impressive win. This is the type of output we should expect from LeBron, and the Celtics stuck to their word and shut down most of the supporting cast. They took a haymaker in the 1st half and came out and dominated the 2nd. Going to LeBron’s house is a new challenge, but we know this team is up to taking it on.
