One more discussion of the inner workings at Patriot Place

-by rking88

If you, like me, have grown tired of the constant discussions about the dysfunction behind the scenes in Foxboro, the “crumbling of the dynasty,” the “nasty divorce” rumors of the Belichick/Brady/Kraft family, the tabloid gossip about who’s feeling what and who hates who, and why nobody likes playing in New England anymore, I won’t blame you at all for stopping here and not reading the rest of what I write. If, however, you dont mind reading one more perspective, I encourage you to read on.

For the most part I’ve stopped trying to figure out what’s going on behind the scenes. I’ve grown so tired of hearing about sources and rumors and whispers that I really don’t care anymore what’s going on, so long as New England still fields a team next year – a team that can compete, mind you. I firmly believe they will. I also firmly believe that the powers that be in New England will continue to overcome difficulties as they have for the greater part of the last 20 years. With that being said, seeing Brady’s recent words at the discussion panel he had with Jim Gray proved to be a great opportunity to read into something that doesn’t really need to be read into any further (but who are we kidding… it’s the offseason and what else are we going to do).

An excerpt: Of his connection with Belichick, Brady said:

We’ve had a great relationship, a very respectful relationship for a long time. I feel like he’s the best coach in the history of the NFL. He has a management style [with] players, and he would say, “Look, I’m not the easiest coach to play for.” I agree. He’s not the easiest coach to play for.

But he’s the best for me. I think what he’s proven is that whatever talent he has, he maximizes his talent. What more could you ask of a coach than that? That’s what I want as a player…. He’s been an incredible coach, he’s been an incredible mentor to me. He’s taught me so much football. To be a 22-year-old kid and come and learn from him, I wouldn’t be sitting here without his coaching. I wouldn’t have the success without how incredibly talented he was, along with a lot of the other coaches, a lot of the other players, a lot of the other people in the organization. Because it takes everybody to do it.

I think this says a lot. It says yes, there is tension. It says yes, there are times when Brady has probably been irritated and annoyed with Bill and his ways. It says that Bill has probably felt the same about Tom. But to me, it also says that there is no coach that Tom would rather play for.

The one thing I think we all know about Tom Brady is that he always believes he can be better. He always wants to be better, and he believes in doing what it takes to improve. He believes in Alex Guerrero’s voodoo because it has worked for him. Bill might not be a huge fan, but he believes in Tom Brady. Tom believes in Bill Belichick too. For nearly 20 years these two have produced the most consistent run in team sports, arguably in sports history, and in a salary cap era where the league has done everything in its power to create parity. These two have survived fines, lost draft picks, traded friends, injury, the highest levels of success, and the most heartbreaking defeat on the biggest stage. And they have done it all together. It would be foolish and naive to think they have been best friends and perfectly in sync the entire time. But the one thing that we can know for certain: they are unified by their desire to be successful at what they do – to win.

Tom’s acknowledgement of the Butler situation says as much.

I have to trust everyone else to do the same thing. Sometimes it works out. For our team, it’s worked out better than every other team for a long time. So how do you nitpick one or two things? Everyone’s trying, in my belief, to do the best thing. It just doesn’t always work out.

He clearly disagreed with Bill’s decision making, and he probably still thinks it’s wrong. But he respects Bill enough to believe that Bill was doing what he thought was best, and HE’S OKAY WITH THAT. In Bill We Trust. So does Tom Brady. The draft, the play calls, and the trades won’t always work. We fans don’t always like them, and the team doesn’t always come out with the best possible outcome. But for the last 20 years, things have certainly worked out “more often than not.”

Brady’s words to me say that he has a profound respect and gratitude towards what Bill has meant for his career. I don’t think Tom would want to play for another coach, despite knowing that it is incredibly difficult to play for Bill. I like to believe that Bill, while he would probably move on from Brady the minute his play slips, would also keep Brady as his starter until Tom were 75 should he still prove effective. The reality is they both know what they expect from the other, and they both have the respect and admiration to ask no more or less from each other.

Of course, this is all just another opinion, another take on someone’s words, another spectator trying to judge the situation. I also realize that this was said in a public forum, and Brady is always careful about how he says things and handles himself in these settings. Still, I choose to believe that “the rumors of their demise have been greatly exaggerated,” so to speak. I think any relationship takes work, and after 20 years of the highest highs, it can be hard to pursue excellence with the same vigor and enthusiasm. I also think that if anybody is capable of working towards that one ultimate goal, it’s the pair of GOATs who happen to be sharing a facility up in Foxboro.

Horrible news on Garcia. Now we know why they brought in a gazillion tackles.

Speaking of tackles – Trent Brown’s specialty is pass blocking, but folks here are wondering where he will play? He’s your starting LT unless Waddle beats him out.

I’m not really worried about LT. Garcia was a big IF. Waddle proved he can play. And with Brown, Tobin and Wynn we have 2 NFL vets and a super talented rookie. Scar will push them all through the grinder and we’ll see who emerges at the other end.

Umm DP the left tackles you were craving ever played in the NFL , stop hating on Garcia, yes some of us thought he could play left tackle cus we watched him play in college just like the ones you were craving for, I watched Garcia of not for the blood clogs o reason to think he wasn’t capable of been a solid left tackle.

DP isn’t “hating” on Antonio Garcia. He was the 85th pick in the draft, as an undersized tackle from a small school. Who spent his rookie year losing weight and fighting a battle bigger than football. Expecting him to play for the Patriots in 2018 was always optimistic.

Just saw cap-hit for Jimmy G is 37 mil this year…YIKES!

I understand the whole trade thing & reasons for/against…and I know Pats would need to juggle a bit & possibly limit other spots…but why all the talk that Pats couldn’t keep both Brady & Jimmy another year with about the same total cap hit – in big picture of things?

MrScratch

SF had roughly had $100M in cap space. They can front a ton now and not worry about the hits down the line. New England would’ve had to free up at least $15M to franchise a back up or would’ve had to have way back loaded the contract.

Good question.
A little googling seems to indicate that the wild hamster is native to Syria, and they were brought to the US to be domesticated in the 1930s.

I don’t blame the alleged victim in the Patricia case for not following through with the trial process. Unless she is lying – and why would she be? – what she went through was horrific, a life-altering experience, one that could materially lower one’s sense of security and self worth, perhaps forever. And to have to relive it in public, and to have to bear up under cross examination and such…. More than 2/3 of these crimes don’t even get reported for that reason. On Thursday, after Patricia defended himself at a press conference, Belichick released his own statement to support his former assistant coach and announce that the Patriots did not know about the indictment until Wednesday night.

“The New England Patriots were not aware of the matter which recently came to light. For 14 years in our organization, Matt conducted himself with great integrity and is known to be an outstanding coach, person and family man. @GrahamBarfield Largest market inefficiency in the NFL right now is trading for veterans with 1-2 years left on their deal. PHI, NE, LAR have built playoff rosters this way while overconfident GMs think they can turn a fourth-round pick into a star (they rarely do). It’s not about turning a 4th rd pick into a “star”, its about 1) getting a longer term of control on a useful player 2) having less use for the 1-2 present years than future years 3) getting a fluid asset (draft pick) you can flip later. Now that we’re deep enough into the season, we get to watch Kevin Durant turn into the best player in the world

I love how urgently Drew Bledsoe is milking this 15 minutes to promote his wine

But let’s be honest here, congrats to the Sixers for taking a game and playing a couple close against our C team

The Sixers have had a hell of a season. But I don’t think the Celtics were that good tonight, to be honest. Not by the standards of the stage. The Sixers really missed an opportunity to steal this game for my money.

I don’t think the C’s played well either, but that’s the point. Honestly, and to your points below, it was yet another conditioning game for Embiid. Ran out of gas in the 4th as he has all series. He and Simmons can and will improve, but unless they make a splash in free agency, they are toe-to-toe with the Celtics minus two all-stars as it stands. The Sixers rode a great late season run and got cocky, but ran into a well-coached yet less talented team.
