The 2018 NEPFF Patriots-Only Mock Draft Contest

-by DNOMN8R314

So I checked the calendar and the draft starts in 10 days. I also checked the window and there’s snow on the ground. These two things should not coincide.

Regardless of the weather, the draft is coming up, which means it’s time for THE 2018 NEPFF PATRIOTS-ONLY MOCK DRAFT CONTEST. I’ve done this contest twice now due to the Patriots not having first-round picks in 2016 or 2017; this year, they have two, but I’ve had more fun doing this contest than the old mock one so I’m keeping it.

(I realize I’m giving less notice than last year, when I made the contest announcement in March… my bad.)

2017’s winner was also 2016’s winner – Hugo. Will he threepeat? Will someone take him down? Will I stop sounding like a cheesy announcer? That last one’s debatable.

For new folks and returning folks, here are the

RULES:

Please send me the 11 players you most strongly predict Bill Belichick will pick in this year’s draft. (Why 11? Two reasons. First, the Patriots were scheduled to make 11 selections in the 2016 draft (they made nine), the first year I ran this contest. Second, it works for the scoring system.)

Please don’t send me more than 11, as I will not count anyone past that cutoff. (I will contact you in response and ask if there’s a specific player or players you want removed. If not, I’ll remove everyone after the first 11.) If you send me fewer than 11, I’ll count all those players (down from 1st, not up from 11th), but you’ll have fewer chances to get a player right.

Send me the list of players in order of likelihood you think the Patriots will draft them, and note which round you think each player will be drafted in. If you think a player will be signed by the Patriots as a UDFA immediately after the draft, you may include him on your list.

(I should note that this is about 11 players you think the team will draft; your guesses do not need to match the draft slots they currently have. If you think the Patriots will trade into the second round and take a certain player there, mark him as a 2nd-round choice and put him on your list.)

SCORING:

Remember, these lists are to be in order of likelihood.

  • If the 1st player on your list is drafted by the Patriots, you receive 15 points.
  • 2nd: 12
  • 3rd: 10
  • 4th: 8
  • 5th: 7
  • 6th: 6
  • 7th: 5
  • 8th: 4
  • 9th: 3
  • 10th: 2
  • 11th: 1

If you correctly guess the round of any Patriots draft pick, you receive an extra 3 points.

If a player you predicted the Patriots would draft is signed by New England as a UDFA, or a player you think will be a Pats UDFA becomes a NE draft pick, you receive half the points for that slot, rounded up to the nearest whole point. For instance, if someone last year had Harvey Langi in their 5th slot as a 3rd-round pick, they would have received 4 points for him.

BONUS POINTS!!

Since the Patriots actually have first-round picks this year, and because they’re expected to draft a quarterback, I’m adding two opportunities for bonus points.

First, you may submit the names of the three players you think the Patriots are most likely to draft in the first round. These players may also be on your list of 11, but they do not have to be. Each player will be worth an additional 5 points – but ONLY if they are drafted in the first round. If one of your players on list gets drafted by the Patriots later, you receive 2 points.

You may also send a list of the three quarterbacks you think the Patriots are most likely to draft. (Again, these players may or may not be on your main list of 11.) Each of these players is worth an extra 3 points whether drafted or signed as a UDFA.

DEADLINE:

I will be accepting entries until the start of the first round of the draft, which is Thursday, April 26 at 8 PM Eastern time. Send your lists to contests@patsfootbalfans.com and include your lists in the body of the email.

One final note: in past years, I’ve combined everyone’s selections into a “combination mock” of the players most selected. I’ll be making a list of those players again, but will not be turning that into an additional mock.

Have fun!

If the Jets were smart, they would draft Chubb. No QB in this draft is more talented than Bridgewater.
They should let Bridgewater show his skills this season, with McCown as backup

bring
Member

Initially, McCown is the starter, and whoever they draft will be the backup. Bridgewater’s knee is still a problem, right?

Deadsmack #NotDone

Bridgewater is on 1 year deal, let him show if he is the answer

@RapSheet
The #Jets desire for a QB at No. 3 is well-chronicled and you don’t trade up from 6 to 3 without a passer in mind. But worth mentioning: They’ve cancelled Top 30 meetings with top prospects who aren’t QBs… because they simply aren’t going in that direction.

@ZackCoxNESN
It’s almost impressive how unimpressive Josh Allen’s 2017 stats were. He failed to crack 150 passing yards in five of 11 games had three with less than 100. Only 300-yarder came against an FCS team.

New “N-iF-L”,
“What if Archie & Olivia Manning had never met?”

Tom would have 10 Super Bowl rings and counting…

Jdog Lemon Head
Member
Free agent

What years would they have won 5 more?
2007 & 2011 from Eli.
2006 from Indy Peyton
2013 from Den Peyton
And then…? I don’t count 2015 Den Peyton because I don’t think Peyton had anything to do them winning that year.

JLStokes
Member

2015 counts. I think Tom would have put up a WAY better fight than Manning and beat the Panthers too.

Jdog Lemon Head
Member
Free agent

Manning didn’t do anything special to win the game. Brock at QB would have beaten the Pats that year. It was Denver’s defense that beat the Patriots.

JLStokes
Member
Free agent

Manning did JUST enough. He had two TDs against Collins. That pretty much decided the game.

Jdog Lemon Head
Member
Free agent

So Brock couldn’t have done that to the Pats?

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

which is harder for an owner (or GM) to find/develop/retain: an all-time great Head Coach, or an all-time great QB? seems to me that history/statistics would say it is harder to find the Coach.

Calipatsfan3473
Member
Free agent

I would say coach.

JLStokes
Member
Free agent

I don’t know. Bill is a great, but a team generally only goes as far as it’s QB can take them.

I don’t think Bill gets 8 Super Bowl appearances, double digit Conference championship appearances and 5 SB rings without an all time great QB named Brady.

Just my two cents.

Calipatsfan3473
Member
Free agent

I tend to think that having a good coach and staff bring stability to the organization- but can’t argue about having a consistent a QB.

HunterCenter

Free agent

It seems to me that the Rams are going to be in cap hell in a couple years.

JLStokes

Naw, I think they will have to start shedding folks next season

HunterCenter

so it’s 2018 SB or bust?

Calipatsfan3473

Sounds like it- they need butts in the stands to fund that new stadium.

JLStokes

Pretty much.

HunterCenter

Julio complaining about a contract with 3 years still left on it is almost worse than what Gronk is doing, however…

JLStokes
Member
Free agent

Gronk for Julio, straight up.

I’ll take that trade.

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

I’d take that too, based on relative age alone, but if BB is hesitant to give Gronk a new contract, then no way he could satisfy Julio’s greed.

Calipatsfan3473
Member
Free agent

Pats are not going to take on a 71 million dollar contract.

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

agreed. I think JaVon was just talking about the relative talent of the two players, in a vacuum

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

of course, I’m hardly the one to ask an opinion of trading away fan-favorite franchise players, since I would have offered Jimmy a long term contract and traded Brady for a kings ransom of draft picks last season.

(…commence red-box clicking below…)

dp73
Member
Free agent

It’s fun to discuss. After all it is a discussion site.

We are all wrong often 🙂

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

it’s fun to think about how they could have reloaded the defense with all those draft picks they would have gotten for Brady. Alas.

JLStokes
Member
Free agent

Brady alone is worth more any picks that could have gotten for him.

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

not if [Jimmy + elite young defenders] > [Brady + current defenders]

but we’ll never know, because Kraft made a decision based on short term public relations rather than a long-term commitment to winning, undermining BB in the process.

I know, the debate is getting old.

JLStokes
Member
Free agent

I think Jimmy is overrated.

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

you might be right. But, he is a starting caliber QB and he is young.

JLStokes
Member
Free agent

Well, let me ask you this question: if, say, Jimmy flames out this year and the Pats make it to the Super Bowl and win, would you still think trading Jimmy was a bad idea?

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

depends on if it is a true, permanent “flame out” or just a one-season dip. because I think Brady might have just missed his last chance at another ring, not through any fault of his own.

JLStokes
Member
Free agent

Really? I don’t. The AFC is relatively weak IMO. Pats should still be favored to AT LEAST get back to the SB. There, It’s anyone’s ball game.

JLStokes
Member
Free agent

I’m not really worried about Gronk and his antics. If he really was as much of a problem to Belichick as folks think he is, I think the Pats would have traded him awhile ago.

Gronk does crazy things. Bill knows this and he’s probably resigned to it. I’d be highly surprised if Gronk is traded at all.

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

or, BB is just continuing to field all offers for him, including during the draft.

dp73
Member
Free agent

My thoughts as well but also I just don’t think BB will get the kind of offers for him the fans think he will get.

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

my guess is, if he is traded, it will be for a 3rd round pick

dp73
Member
Free agent

And fans will outraged.

Part of my thought that he won’t be traded in that he is more valuable to the Patriots than the can get for him in a trade. Not due to talent due but other factors.

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

the offensive system? I would think Gronk could thrive in any system. He’s simply bigger and faster than his matchups, typically.

dp73
Member
Free agent

No his injuries talk of retirement and wanting more money.

When teams think you have to trade someone you are probably going to be offered less.

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

exactly, and I think a healthy Gronk in his prime with zero distractions, contract issues, antics, etc, would be worth a 1st round pick. So I am bumping his current value down to a 3rd based on those existing issues.

dp73
Member
Free agent

Which is why I think the Patriots will keep him.
Should be an interesting draft.

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

BB will only keep him if he thinks he will help the team without negative ancillary issues in the locker room or on the field. Look at the Collins situation. Not the same exact situation, but BB has shown a willingness to cut his losses.

dp73
Member
Free agent

He would thrive.

dp73
Member
Free agent

Look at this site, fans think they can get a #1 pick for Gronk.

Gronk’s new money APY (9M) as a percentage of the league cap is 7.46%, the highest by far of any tight end. Second is Julius Thomas’ at 6.42%. Graham = 5.64%. Burton = 4.51%.

probably a reason why finding a trading partner is unlikely.

Calipatsfan3473
Member

According to Michael Lombardi- Gronk and his agent wanted a new contract every year- not good.

HunterCenter

one way to potentially block or give yourself leverage in a trade is to say you are thinking about retiring – that way you might be able to pick your next team

Calipatsfan3473

BB could trade him and send him where BB wants- just like Collins.

bring

Calipatsfan3473

HunterCenter

#newcontractgate

Calipatsfan3473
Member
Free agent

I would imagine that BB is quite sick of the Gronk “act”- which is why I wouldn’t be surprised if they trade him.

dp73
Member
Free agent

I don’t think they will trade Gronk because I don’t think they will get full value for him.
We will see.

Calipatsfan3473
Member
Free agent

I don’t know dp- he’s more likely than not to miss games because of injury and now the money issue is being voiced publicly- the situation is almost out of control.

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

that’s the question… at what point does the needle move far enough that BB is willing to take less than full value just to wash his hands of the situation? After all, Gronk is 29 and often injured. It’s not like “full value” equates with a perfectly healthy, 16-game season GRonk in his prime.

dp73
Member
Free agent

And unhappy and publicly thinking of retirement.
A recipe to get low balled on an offer.

HunterCenter
Member

oh I’m sure BB has turned down many low-ball offers already

To respond to the Hockey crowd from last night, that is what Babcock does – he’s an outstanding coach and that team is 3 years ahead of schedule with their rebuild Babs and Shanny made them good again quickly, unfortunately.

MrLucky

That’s why it’s better to suck for a while and collect high picks. Matthews and Marner are studs and now Nylander has decided to show up. This is what happens when you let a talented team hang around. Bruins are still the better team. Hope they show it in game 7.

The Patriots won’t draft one quarterback … they’ll take two

They select the first within the first three rounds, then add one in the fourth-to-seventh-round range. This is a deeper QB class than previous years, which sets up the Patriots for one of their patented double-dips at the same position. While the first quarterback would be more highly touted, as Washington’s double-dip with Robert Griffin III (first round) and Kirk Cousins (fourth round) in 2012 reminds us, sometimes the second pick is the one who will emerge in time. — Mike Reiss

dp73
Member
Free agent

We don’t have picks in the 4th.

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

but I think you get the point

HunterCenter
Member
Free agent

I’m not necessarily opposed to a double-dip, but we’d have to accept that one of them would likely be a wasted pick, because I don’t see the Pats carrying 4 QBs, and I also don’t see them cutting Hoyer and going with a rookie as the QB2.

No. Game to game and in game adjustments. They are being out coached and out played. Also, how many times in their 3 losses have they scored a goal, only to give one up very soon after. That’s lack of focus and discipline. And that’s on the coach.
