State of the Uniform: The Patriots Just Before the Dawn of 2018

-by DinoScapelli

The term “sports fan” covers everyone who follows sports at any level of interest, from occasional viewing to occupy empty stretches in an otherwise busy day, to constant attention to every small development in a continuous stream of sporting news made ever more torrential by pervasive social media. Most of us in this little virtual community fall somewhere in between. Still, we are keeping track of events in the offseason of our favorite American football team, so we must lean just a bit toward the fanatical.

Right now, we are less than a week from the beginning of the 2018 NFL year and the trading and free agent feeding frenzy that ensues. The normally patient Bill Belichick went all piranha last year, trading for Kony Ealy, Brandin Cooks, and Dwayne Allen, and signing free agents Lawrence Guy, Stephon Gilmore, and Rex Burkhead in the first week. Tough to say whether he will be so ravenous this time around, but the team does have priority free agents of its own to try to retain or replace through every means available, culminating in the NFL draft in late April. Thus far, Belichick has picked up the option on wide receiver Kenny Britt and re-signed special teams stalwart Brandons Bolden and King, but there is much more work to do to make the team complete for the 2018 campaign.

Making room under the salary cap is as important as signing a team’s own priority free agents; you can’t do the latter without doing the former, unless you have your hands on the controls of a perpetually rebuilding franchise like Cleveland, rolling in promissory payroll potential. To that end, Belichick has also declined to pick up the option on defensive tackle Alan Branch’s contract and released tight end Marcellus Bennett, and there will be plenty more cost-cutting moves to come.

It may appear to the casual fan as though NFL teams are on vacation until summer at least, but those 32 pro football hives are buzzing with winter activity. And it’s not just one insomniac figure burning the midnight oil in Foxborough; it’s a large contingent of personnel personnel working toward the common goal of plugging holes in a roster in a serious state of flux. They have football insufficiencies to balance against financial imperatives. It never really stops, but it will hit the frantic level for a month or two, beginning next Wednesday at 4:00 PM, and we will all be tuned in.

All fanatics like us would like to have a say in these crucial decisions, but all we can do is watch and hope they are made to the best effect. Who decides what the best effect is? Why, each of us does, of course! Playing GM is half the fun of following a sports team, and it’s the bread and butter not only of fantasy sports, but of discussion boards like this one. So let’s take a look at the Patriots’ current situation and see what needs to be done before training camp arrives in July. Here is one fan’s analysis of each position group and how pressing the need is to upgrade it, considering the limitations of available cap space (approximately $25 million at publication time) and the team’s relative paucity of draft picks (currently 6).

Beginning with an offense that was among the league’s most productive in 2017:

QB: The starter will be 41 years old on opening day. Think about that! That puts the position at the red alert level…except that that starter is the seemingly ageless Tom Brady. He is not invincible, and a good backup is necessary, but short of a Nick Foles or Case Keenum, whatever backup the Pats have on the final roster will be a major drop-off from the 2017 MVP. Brian Hoyer is an adequate backup for 2018, and there are better free agent possibilities as well, so it all comes down to the need to find a developmental successor to Brady. The loss of Jimmy Garoppolo means starting all over again, unless Belichick is willing to consider replacing Brady with a veteran free agent in a few years, or waiting to find a rookie phenom when the time comes. In this fan’s opinion, the position is not a top priority yet, but if the budding apple of Bill’s eye is there when the Pats pick in the first few rounds, I think they should take him. Conclusion: Mild need.

OL: Once again I bleat: Find the next left tackle now! They should already have that man on the roster, but unless Tony Garcia is a superhuman healer, they do not. Marcus Cannon is a stout right tackle, but he struggles at times on the other side, and gets injured at some point every year. Besides those two, the only tackle on the roster is Andrew Jelks. Yeah, me neither. So re-signing the perfectly adequate free agent Nate Solder is imperative, and frankly, re-signing at least one of the other free agents, Cameron Fleming and LaAdrian Waddle, is almost as vital. The position is also a priority in the upcoming draft, which is not replete with OT depth, so you’d be hoping to find a diamond in the rough. Guard and center are adequately manned, and limited resources really can’t be spent on those positions even though they definitely have room for improvement. Conclusion: Screaming need, at least at LT.

RB: Unless Bill plans to hold onto free agents Dion Lewis and Rex Burkhead, this is a must-draft position, and this year’s draft class is loaded. What about Mike Gillislee? Beats me. Conclusion: Mild need, mostly late in the draft or among rookie free agents.

TE: Well, Gronk, what’s it gonna be? Looks like a position of prime interest in the draft either way, but I wouldn’t force it, nor would I sign or trade for an expensive veteran. Conclusion: Mild need that becomes a panic button need if Gronk retires.

WR: Not a position of need, even with Julian Edelman aging and rehabbing and Danny Playoffs Amendola aging. Conclusion: Stand pat.

Now for a defense that was inconsistent as hell, and ultimately not at the championship level.

DT: They have depth, but without a healthy Alan Branch, the interior run defense was exposed often. And there is still the need for an interior pass pressure stud. Conclusion: Considerable need.

DE: They have bodies, but not enough consistent quality in either run defense or pass rush. Even the best player at the position, Trey Flowers, is not as effective as he needs to be. Conclusion: Considerable need, especially for pass rush.

LB: They have next to nothing at linebacker and should cull the weaker roster vagrants they now have. Dont’a Hightower is not reliable, full stop. Kyle Van Noy is just a guy. Special teamer Marquis Flowers may be their best overall LB, and that is very, very sad. This is the Patriots primary need in the draft, and I would be using more than one early pick. Conclusion: Deafeningly screaming need.

CB: Definitely a need with the loss of the mercurial Malcolm Butler, especially a bigger slot cover type and one or two depth outside corners. It’s not worth trading precious draft capital for someone old and slow, like Richard Sherman or Aqib Talib [ED NOTE: Talib has been traded to the Rams since this was written], but if a late veteran free agent would come reasonably cheap, I’d jump at him and draft at least one other prospect. Conclusion: Considerable need in the slot and for depth.

S: They really should be looking for the next Devin McCourty and Patrick Chung now. They may already have the next free safety in Eric Rowe, but he is too vital in outside coverage right now to waste at safety in 2018. They certainly have a lot of bodies, and one or two may emerge. Conclusion: Mild need.

Where does that leave us? It seems to this observer that signing Nate Solder is the only absolutely necessary thing to do on offense unless Rob Gronkowski leaves the NFL. Anything else can be handled in good time for little money. Drafting a quarterback is always good business, and this year may be a good one for developmental QBs, but the needs on defense are so conspicuous that it might be worth waiting. The Patriots defense as it is now constructed is something of a mess, especially in the front seven. A whole lot of cap space could be generated by dumping some of the trash currently on the roster at linebacker, cap space that could be used to re-sign the team’s own key free agents and perhaps a defender or two. Then, most or all of the six draft picks should be used on defenders, especially top linebackers for the future.

For now, this type of assessment is really all we have to go on. As the free agency picture gets clearer, we can begin to fill in some names to fill some of these positions of need. Then follows the draft madness, which is a phenomenon unlike any other sport’s draft. Some of us will dive into game films and scouting reports and add our favorite names to the endless list of prospects to watch. It will certainly make for a lively debate among us fanatics for a couple of “quiet” months!

You know, I don’t either but I have been told on this site that Cannon could play LT. I don’t think that is the best option.

Has he ever done it for the Pats? I remember BB telling the story of trying to swich some tackle from left to right or vice versa (maybe it was Matt Light) and he just couldn’t do it. It’s not the same thing.

I think he might have.Doing it for one game is one thing. Doing it for 16 games is another.

Keenum to Denver perhaps slides a better college QB to us in the draft.

Maybe but Case Keenum is 30 and has had one good year and if would be smart for Denver to still draft a QB.

from Reiss:
No team in the NFL uses its three-safety package on defense more than the Patriots, which makes Vaccaro — a 2013 first-round pick of the Saints — a potential intriguing option on a short-term deal that mutually benefits both sides: Vaccaro could improve his stock in a defense that prioritizes safeties, the Patriots could get a talented player with a high-end skill set at a fair price, and then Vaccaro could get another bite on the free-agent market in 2019.

LaFeteMattDog

I was just reading that. I like Vaccaro but would he really come cheaply? He was a 1st round pick and seems to be a good player.

@RapSheet
The #Chiefs are now adding a big weapon on defense: They plan to sign former #Cowboys LB Anthony Hitchens to a deal worth $9M per year, sources tell me and @TomPelissero.

memokerobi

The #Chiefs locked in on WR Sammy Watkins late last night and the deal is expected to be worth roughly $16M per year over 3 years, sources say.

I guess Cooks will get around 15M in the market as well. 16M is absurd for Watkins who hasn’t done anything in his career

MrLucky

Did they release the numbers for Robinson signing with the Bears? I’d much rather have him than Watkins. Feel like the Chiefs misread the market on Watkins.

3 years 42M for Robinson. Much, much better deal imo. But KC offense with Mahomes, Kelce, Hill, Watkins and Hunt should be fun and interesting to watch

The Cardinals plan to offer Cousins a five-year deal worth $145 million, which would mean Cousins makes $29 million per year, making him the highest-paid player in NFL history, surpassing Jimmy Garoppolo’s average annual value.

I think Butler would be a good fit in the Seahawks system

dfwpatsfan

I’m not sure. Admittedly I did not watch many Seahawks games, but if they are planning on retaining their cover -2 scheme with. Cornerbacks anchoring the side of the field, Butler will get burned by bigger receivers in press man. They might have to change the way they play in the secondary altogether.

Shaggy
Guest
Free agent

Well, they are losing a lot of core defenders so an adjustment will be natural. But all corners get burned in press man. That’s why teams are reluctant to play it unless you have a 2009 Revis or one hell of a pass rush. I think Butler’s physical style would blend in well there. I I agree that he would do fine on the Texans as well

Bills have done some good work so far. They have no QB but they have a ton of draft assets so they can go get their guy if they like one. Could still go after a Keenum or McCown type for the short term. They could even try to trade for Foles if they wanted to (I wouldn’t pay the price). One more LT option off the table. Although at his price tag and injury history, was probably not an option anyways. Bengals OL last year was horrible. They had to do something

Is the question, “Who do we not care about?” 🙂

Vikings have reached out to the agent of Drew Brees.

That would be a coup!

I can’t imagine that the Saints would let Brees walk but he’s no longer under contract.

I don’t think he leaves either but he wants to go there’s nothing the Saints can do about it to stop him

No way Brees leaves. Saints are finally good again he’s ending his career there.

Let’s hope Solder takes a home town discount.
If not we may have Cannon at LT.

I’m hoping the same dp- I would hate to lose him.

Mike Petraglia

@Trags
#Celtics are literally falling apart. They’re without Brown, Irving, Smart and Theis… and Irving is probably the healthiest of them. Horrific luck at the worst time for C’s. Smart and Theis could be done for season.

Marcus Smart tore a tendon in his thumb. That’s a wrap, folks.

Yeah, if Smart is done for the year, they’re going to have a hard time getting to the ECF.

@MarcSesslerNFL
On @NFLNetwork, @RapSheet names AJ McCarron as a potential target for the Broncos if Cousins lands elsewhere. AJ knows coach Vance Joseph from Cincy.

AJ will be having the time of his life.

Why is that a hopefully? Are the Broncos intimidating to you with Cousins?

I’d prefer Denver draft Rosen. Jeff George Part II.

Losing Theis is baaaad for Boston. Baynes is a good defensive center but big centers have been phased out in the playoffs for a few years now. If Baynes can’t play in the playoffs then they’ve got 1 big man left.

rondo723

Theis was outstanding on D for a rookie big. The C’s sustained for a long time without Hayward and were on fire after the ASB when they were at full strength, but it’s probably time to put October into view.

Wait, we’re giving up? Just like that?

rondo723

Not fully, but I’d take the long view with Kyrie’s knee ailing and Jaylen out indefinitely

LaFeteMattDog

A championship was never in the works this year but I’d be happy with a deep playoff run, getting the young guys some playoff experience and maybe even sending LeBron home before losing to Toronto in the ECF.

The Patriots lost to a very good Eagles team in the Super Bowl. They are in very good position to go to another one, get over it

No dude, the Pats suck unless they blow out the ’85 Bears in the SB and have every player exceed his contract. And they also have to send me $500 in the mail
