Numerical Highs and Lows

-by DNOMN8R314

As most of my random football observations go, this article was conceived while I was pondering baseball.

I am a Minnesota Twins fan – some of you know that – and on their spring training roster the Twins carry Erick Aybar, who is wearing #0, and Logan Morrison, donning #99.  This got me to wonder how many baseball teams have had players wearing 0 (or 00) and 99 on their roster at the same time, and the answer is very few, all since the 1997 New York Mets (Rey Ordonez #0, Turk Wendell #99).

Obviously, 0 and 00 are no longer allowed to be worn in the NFL, but this observation got me wondering if there has ever been a time when the Patriots had players who wore #1 and #99 on the same roster, not counting preseason. (If you do count preseason, there is a time the Patriots had a #0 and #99; in August 2001, Bryan Cox wore #0 and Brandon Mitchell wore #99. Both players would change numbers for the regular season, Cox to #51 and Mitchell to #96.)

A quick check on Pro Football Reference, and I received a very surprising answer.

The last Patriot to wear #1 was kicker Tony Franklin in 1987. The first Patriot to wear #99 was defensive end Ben Thomas in, surprisingly, 1985. This means that for only three seasons, the Patriots had a #1 and #99 on the field at the same time.

For all but one game, that #1 was Franklin, save one 1987 game against Cleveland where he was replaced by Eric Schubert, who also wore #1.

Thomas wore #99 for all of 1985 and four games in 1986 before departing for Green Bay (I do not know if he was released or traded). The number remained unworn until Steve Wilburn, another defensive end, wore it in 1987. For three games.

Since then, several Patriots have worn #99, but none have yet worn #1, so a simultaneous numerical high and low will have to wait.

Interestingly, only one other Patriot has worn #1, and PFR ranks him the best of the three to don the number. That player is kicker John Smith, who spent 10 years in New England and is best known for kicking the field goal in the Snow Plow game. (Including the postseason, Smith would kick just nine more field goals in his career after that game.)

And of the Patriots to have worn #99, the best so far is undoubtedly defensive tackle Mike Wright, an undrafted free agent who earned a role on the defensive line, then a starting spot, and was a mainstay on the line for six seasons, only to see his career cut short due to concussions. Fittingly, during his time in the NFL, Wright recorded 99 tackles.

On the current team, defensive tackle Vincent Valentine wears #99, while #1 is open. Come free agency and the draft, we shall see if that jersey is worn again.

@GregABedard
If I’m the Patriots, I’m calling the Rams to see if they have interest in Gronk. And if I’m the Rams, I’m seriously considering it. Like Higbee, but largely a gaping hole at TE.

I think Bedard has officially lost it.

Not sure why everyone thinks he is unhappy, IMO he has not come out and said it. He is expecting a contract extension and during this period it is usually stressful.

Also, what would the Pats ask? Nothing lower than a first round pick I hope.

dfwpatsfan
Member

Hmmm, that’s kind of a reach, he needed, what, 120 yards and multiple TDs or so to hit his incentives? Also, it was incorrectly reported initially it was $5.5m from the Jets game, it was an additional $2.5m as he had already earned the $3m. There was no chance the Pats risk playing him that much for him to earn incentives and probably him suffer an injury.

His whole unhappy status is wildly out of context. He did say he was unhappy at training camp since his body wasn’t responding and at that time he considered retirement.

Pats Pulpit
@patspulpit
“They brought up some film and asked me what I was doing in this coverage, what were some of the linebackers doing in the coverage. What I was thinking, what I saw.” Stanford safety Justin Reid details his combine interview with the #Patriots.
–>

I think he’d be a great fit for us and will be a really good player. I also appreciate that there are no reports of creepy questions being asked by the Pats in these interviews. I feel like BB may be an SOB, but he’s a football junkie and doesn’t have time for that other nonsense.

dfwpatsfan

This is actually a good draft for safeties. Especially Reid has played as a slot CB at Stanford too. Belichick can utilize him as a slot guy in big dime. Reid is worth the shot if he is available at 63.

If they do pick Reid, I can see them going with a big dime as a sub defense. In that case, bring a big guy capable of playing 3-downs like Daquan Jones.

LaFeteMattDog

CBS sports has him as the 63rd rated prospect. I don’t know what other teams needs are though so you might need to draft him with the SF 2nd rounder. But who knows?

His last season definitely hurt his draft stock, but that could be more due to Stanford mismanaging his role.

So Pats were actually trying to make a 12th hour trade with SEA to get the brothers Bennett together?! That means they weren’t necessarily going to cut Marty and his monster salary… until they lost out on Michael? Either way, I think we can do better for much cheaper.

The New England Patriots have signed core special-teams player Brandon King to a two-year, $2.6 million extension through the 2019 season, which is a deal that highlights how King chose stability and security over possibly making more money by playing things out as a restricted free agent this offseason.-Mike Reiss

. There weren’t many players that had a better combine than Miller, who set a record for offensive linemen with a 10-foot-1 broad jump while also running a 4.95 40 at 310 pounds. Coupled with the expected fall of Orlando Brown after his woeful showing, Miller could earn a ticket to the first round in the draft.

If you’re only considering QBs that won national championships, there are very few of them vs. very, very many that didn’t and are still competing for starting QB spots. It makes sense that most of the best QBs in the NFL would not have won one.

Jdog Lemon Head

The qualifier isn’t national championship. I just mentioned that because Auburn has been a rollercoaster with being terrible, then awesome, then terrible, then awesome.

LaFeteMattDog

I don’t quite know how you define big-time program. Cal is a big state school and that Rodgers guy is pretty good.

LaFeteMattDog

Looking at the top QBs in terms of QBR last year most of them were from schools with big football programs. Brady, Prescott, Matt Ryan (maybe BC doesn’t qualify as big-time but they do play in the ACC), Brees, Russell Wilson. Stafford.

Jdog Lemon Head
Member
Free agent

To me, a big time program are schools that typically are in the discussion for national championships. In my opinion a big time produces a lot of NFL talent.

Jdog Lemon Head
Member
Free agent

What I’m getting at is that the top programs produce a lot of talent so the talent can cover deficiencies of the QB.

LaFeteMattDog
Member
Free agent

Well, why didn’t you just say so?? 🙂

LaFeteMattDog
Member
Free agent

Ok but there are usually only about 4 or 5 of those that have a legit shot at a national championship every year. You’re comparing a very small # of QBs to a much much larger sample of QBs that play in college and don’t have a shot at one. And those 100s of others still compete for NFL QB jobs.

Jdog Lemon Head
Member
Free agent

Those QBs don’t typically have a shot if their team isn’t that good, which goes to my point about talent around them making the player look better than he really is. But even if we say schools in the top 25, how many QBs came from a team that was in the top 25 at the time? Typically schools in the top 25 have a good QB. Hard to go far in football without a good QB,

Last news from Reiss was that he is expected to be ready by training camp. So is Rivers, though he might be held out to get back up to game shape. That said, I never hatted Peyton Manning. He made a business decision to make more commercials and have a higher profile than Tom Brady. I respect both decisions and respect both individuals. If I would have to guess, I would not be surprised if Seahawks restructure Wilson. He is a FA in 2020, and Hawks might try to extend him to 2023. Get some cap margin for this year ($23m) and next ($25m).

dfwpatsfan

I don’t think so since it wasn’t the Cowboys who approached him. Also, if the Cowboys give what the Seahawks want in a trade, I don’t see why the Seahawks will turn around and complain about tampering.

Dallas makes great sense for Earl Thomas, as a Longhorn he always wanted to play for Dallas. Question is the price of the trade.
