Exhale…. What Now For The Patriots?

-by Dino Scapelli

Back to back didn’t happen. The dynasty has not been extended. Ring #6 will not adorn Patriot fingers this year. The stern of Bill Belichick’s boat does not have to be repainted in 2018.

The New England Patriots failed to defend their championship of the National Football League.

Critics will attribute the shortfall to any or all of a handful of ills: internal rivalries causing dysfunction at the top of the organization, Belichick’s arrogance in benching a popular star player, distractions from coordinators interviewing for other jobs. The fact that the outstanding Philadelphia Eagles made plays at crucial moments while the Patriots did not is the more compelling reason, but Patriots fans, and indeed many of the league’s followers and analysts, have come to view the entire NFL saga through a New England lens. Such has been the control over the hierarchy of pro American football that the Foxboro franchise has exerted for the last 17 years; they are the fulcrum of the balance of power in the New America’s Pastime.

Has the dynasty finally shown signs of inevitable degeneration, or was this merely the ugly side of the coin of fate that has given the team five close victories and two close losses before? Only time will tell; another football season, and another, and another. Belichick and Brady cannot keep doing forever what they have been doing for so long, but after all, during this unprecedented run of success, they have not won it all every year.

The key to maintaining their competitive position has been the remarkable ability to manage their player roster and coaching staff in spite of departures, retirements, and salary cap restrictions. The Patriots under Bill Belichick have been able to field contending teams year after year in spite of constant turnover of personnel. Some painful decisions have to be made every offseason to keep the competitiveness of the whole up to a championship standard, rather than trying to cling to what worked before by rewarding star players with gaudy contracts to retain the glamour of a winning team.

Belichick is a master of finding players that fill vital roles within the limitations of the salary cap. That means recognizing the moment a player’s on-field value falls below his contract price, even if that player is a fan favorite or Pro Bowl invitee. It may look cold to outsiders, but this is a big business, and it has to be run efficiently.

As it now stands, the Patriots have just over $13 million in spending money available to them under the likely salary cap number, which will be determined in the coming months. That’s a lot of money to you and me, but with several key free agents to try to retain and others to acquire, it will disappear in the blink of an eye once the new league year begins and free agents can be added. There must be some culling of players under contract in 2018 to increase that cap space. Who are those departures going to be? Let’s consider some names.

Using patscap.com and overthecap.com as sources, we see that payroll savings for the 2018 season are available by releasing (before the start of June) 45 of the top 51 players under contract. Some of the team’s most important players would provide the most cap space if traded or released, but clearly we are not going to see Tom Brady or Rob Gronkowski let go. Here is a list of players that might be deemed marginal contributors with high salaries and potential savings if cut:

  • TE Marcellus Bennett ($6,187,500 savings if cut or traded by June 1)
  • TE Dwayne Allen ($5,000,000)
  • DT Alan Branch ($3,550,000)
  • LB Shea McClellin ($2,350,000)
  • RB Mike Gillislee ($2,181,250)
  • LB David Harris ($2,125,000)
  • WR Phillip Dorsett ($1,544,373)
  • WR Kenny Britt ($1,453,125)
  • SS Jordan Richards ($941,120)
  • DE/ST Geneo Grissom ($720,000)
  • LB/ST Nicholas Grigsby ($645,000)
  • G/C Ted Karras ($630,000)
  • DE Eric Lee ($570,000)
  • WR/PR Bernard Reedy ($555,000)
  • T/G Cole Croston ($553,000)
  • TE Jacob Hollister ($551,666)
  • CB Cyrus Jones ($535,745)

Everyone else is either under $500,000 or is a player this writer considers a valuable contributor. You may agree, disagree, or add some of your own players to this list.

Total potential savings for 2018: $30,092,779.

That would certainly help sign existing free agents like Nate Solder, Cameron Fleming, LaAdrian Waddle, Rex Burkhead, Dion Lewis, Danny Amendola, Matthew Slater, Marquis Flowers, Johnson Bademosi, Nate Ebner, and Brandon King. But keep in mind that every player let go must be replaced at a cost that may erase the savings entirely, so decisions have to be made about value to the team in coming seasons.

Which players would you cut or trade? Which players would you add to this list, or remove from it?

still NOT gotten over the loss and ego trip by Belichick! Now it is clear that BB is NOT thinking Team Forst –it is I First and My Legacy! Screw the pats seems to be his mantra –time for Kraft to replace this guy and get rid of his sons –talk about nepotism! Tom the Great should have Six rings and h as proven again Tom the Great is the reason for the rings –BB is was lucky to have had Tom fall in his lap in the sixth round! Yes, just check BB’s record with Browns and with Bledsoe!

As of now, the are the number and placement of the Pats 2018 draft picks based on CBS Sports. This does not include potential compensatory picks in the 4th and 7th rounds. Round 1: 1 Round 2: 2 Round 3: 1 Round 4: None Round 5: None Round 6: 1 Round 7: None Assuming none are traded, I prefer they use the round 1-3 spots for DL, LB and maybe QB. Round 6 for a RB though one could wait to pick up an UDFA after the draft. This could all change after free agency signings. However, if BB doesn’t… Read more »

He was cut by Gruden, his first move with the Raiders. I assume that means that anyone can sign him? From a competitive stand-point, I don’t get why a player cut by his team, can be signed by anyone immediately, but a player with an expiring contract has to wait until the start of free agency? What is the point of such a distinction?

some teams want to see if any one would want to trade for a player before releasing him to the free for all at the expiration of the contract.

If I was in charge of the NBA or NHL, I would make All-star weekend the same as the Super Bowl. It is utterly pointless and nobody cares anyway. Once the NFL season is over, I’d promote the hell out of the competition with important games in prime-time. Now, I have to wait over a week for a competitive C’s game and one game in a week’s time for the B’s.

No idea but the C’s are off for over a week and the B’s have 1 game in a week’s time period when people (ME!) are clamoring for something to get into besides crying myself to sleep over a difficult Patriots defeat in the most important game of the year with some cheap ass wine in a box {High-5 Cali!}

So AJ McCarron outs the under-the-table NFL redshirting process because he wants to hit free agency a year early. I’m curious to see if there is any fallout from this. My guess is that the Packers will be forced to release Aaron Rodgers before the league acknowledges any of the shady roster rule circumventing that goes on around the league.

And obligatory: where’s the million dollar fine and docked first rounder? Muh integrity.

Who actually wants AJ McCarron though? Its not like he had stiff competition in Cincinnati.
If he’s going to get a nice contract then it says more about the absence of competent QBs in the league right now than anything else.

It’s truly amazing that we made it to the SB with front 7 starters like: KVN, Roberts, Lee, M. Flowers, Guy, Ricky Jean. All these guys were essentially unknowns a year ago… and that’s a major reason why we lost. We need a huge boost in EDGE and LB. Maybe it comes from returning IR (HT, Shea, Rivers, Valentine, Langi) and some from 2nd year jumps (Wise, Butler, Reilly).

Saturn III

My pipedream is Raquon Smith in the 1st and Rasheem Green in the 2nd, would cover the LB and EDGE needs.

I think KVN, HT, M. Flowers could be a decent LB line – IF Donta is healthy. But I’d rather have a legit FA on the WLB, or stud DP.

Bennett, Allen, Branch, Harris, Britt are the easy immediate cuts. Who knows with guys like Shea, Gillislee, Richards, Grissom… But just the top 5 would give us ~$18M

I think AJ McCarron being granted UFA status today might helps the Pats. The Bengals had two backups so they don’t have to draft another one this year, and the team that signs McCarron should be set too.

FDA approves first blood test that can help diagnose a concussion

Test results currently can be available within three to four hours. But Henry L. Nordhoff, chairman and chief executive officer of San Diego-based Banyan Biomarkers, told The Times on Wednesday that his company is working with the Defense Department to shorten that turn-around time to under an hour.

Read it all -> http://www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-concussion-blood-test-20180214-story.html

It’s always wise to be a bit skeptical of new diagnostics that have been fast tracked for political reasons. FDA is under stress from so many different directions. I’d be more comfortable if the test had been through the standard regulatory process.

Considering the available FA CBs, I would put Malcolm Butler at the top of the list by a fair margin.

Also, Eric Rowe is a clear #2 CB, as long as he is on the outside. He and Butler were often forced to play the inside this past year, much to their detriment. A slot CB is what the Pats need, and they may have a starter in Jon Jones. I would still be looking to the draft before free agency, owing to limited cap space.

This is an controversial subject and I will try to just state the facts and not my opinions. The Second Amendment is unique to the US: no other country grants it’s citizens right to bear arms. This was specifically included by the Founding Fathers to ensure that a well armed citizenry can overthrow a tyrannical government. There are limits to the Second Amendment, for example I cannot own a nuclear weapon on the pretext of my rights. Even owning fully automatic firearms requires a Federal tax stamp. That said, the current background checks are exhaustive. Felons cannot legally purchase firearms.… Read more »

It is a stretch to say that the 2nd amendment “was specifically included by the Founding Fathers to ensure that a well armed citizenry can overthrow a tyrannical government.” There was no US army in the infancy of the nation, but not because the government was likely to be tyrranical. The wording is very unclear, but it says: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Which means that the states have the responsibility for military defense independently and collectively, but… Read more »

This is precisely the point that has been hotly debated. James Madison originally proposed the Second Amendment shortly after the Constitution was officially ratified as a way to provide more power to state militias, which today are considered the National Guard. It was deemed a compromise between Federalists — those who supported the Constitution as it was ratified — and the anti-Federalists — those who supported states having more power. Having just used guns and other arms to ward off the English, the amendment was originally created to give citizens the opportunity to fight back against a tyrannical federal government.… Read more »

It is also not that clearly a left vs. right thing: Majorities on both ends of the spectrum agree that regulation needs to increase in many areas.

When I way the right or left, I’m referring to the traditional viewpoints. There’s obviously a lot of crossover.

Fortunately, only about 33% of Americans own guns.

I think math would lead us to conclude that approximately 66.666667% of the mentally ill would not own guns.

But to answer your question regarding license or formal training, while recommended is not required. Driving is a privilege not a right, privileges can be stripped by the state. Rights cannot. So the state can refuse you to operate a motor vehicle on the road, but cannot refuse your right to own a firearm.

DinoScapelli

The Supreme Court disagrees with that statement.

dfwpatsfan

Not sure what you mean the SCOTUS disagrees. If you’re referring to Miller v Texas, yes they chose to defer to the states rights to restrict gun ownership. However, in DC v Heller, the Supreme Court ruled that despite state laws, individuals who were not part of a state militia did have the right to bear arms. As part of its ruling, the court wrote, “The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.”

DinoScapelli

But DC vs. Heller also included the right of states to regulate firearms.

dfwpatsfan

That opened a can of worms, because the fine line between regulation vs restriction is blurred. Hence the debate. If anything till about 70 years back the Supreme Court was decisive, states can restrict and regulate firearms. At the time, the NRA defended black people’s rights to own firearms.

Now it’s more vague than ever.

Rural white males are the only group of citizens that are increasingly against regulation. I wonder why….

Check on the recent ruling from SCOTUS on the 2nd Amendment.Caetano v. Massachusetts. The case involved a woman who was in possession of a stun gun for self-defense against an abusive ex-boyfriend. Because stun guns were illegal under Massachusetts law, the woman was arrested and convicted for possessing the weapon. The case made its way to the Supreme Court, which ruled that stun guns and, indeed “all instruments that constitute bearable arms,” are protected under the Second Amendment.

But that would violate your original opinion on states making the decisions. It rightly comes down to individual circumstances. But how do we expect laws to broadly cover individual circumstances. I don’t know the answer, as much as I wish I did.

DinoScapelli

That’s not my opinion, it is what the stupid 2nd amendment says in the worst possible wording.

Public opinion outranks the 230 year old original wording of what was never intended to be an unchangeably dogmatic doctrine. That’s why we have amendments. We need a new 2nd, or just the admission on the part of the gun industry that regulation lies somewhere within the original intent.

Or maybe we stop leaning on the Articles of the Constitution to guide our moral compass and teach compassion and empathy to our children more than anything. No amount of laws will protect humans if we cannot learn be compassionate towards our fellow human beings. All you’re left with is a prison state.

Vontae Davis is not on that list, weird. Is it because he was released back in December?

So add him to the list.
Who do you like?

I think the Patriots will spend their money on Solder. If Solder retires then they have to decide if Cannon can play LT and maybe resign Flemming. The FA LT list does not look deep.

dfwpatsfan

I think Solder extends for 2 more years. I have a feeling Fleming stays and Waddle leaves. hope they don’t have to rely on Cannon to switch to LT. I don’t know what’s up with Garcia. Not sure if he’s gaining his weight back or he’s done.

I believe that Flemming is a FA in a weak FA pool at OT and will probably get overpaid. So, I don’t think the Patriots can afford both Solder and Flemming.

I do agree about Solder.

If they spend on D, they need to spend on DE and LB.

dfwpatsfan

They need a replacement for Butler, and while Rowe is decent, he’s better off as #3. Besides this draft is really deep for LBs. They might draft a DT and LB and get a DT/E via FA or Trade. Sam Hubbard is an interesting prospect I see the Pats drafting.

So I still maintain that the Pats will add a corner via FA.

It seems like when a draft is really deep a certain position, BB drafts a different position.

dfwpatsfan

Sometimes it could be that they valued certain scheme fit players better than drafting for immediate need. Other times there’s UDFA that works out. Typically Pat’s seem to pick the highest valued player when they pick, not by position.

Are the Sox gonna do anything this offseason? Like at all? They’re lucky the Pats play in to February and fans haven’t been paying attention to them yet. I don’t blame them for not overpaying JDM or Hos but this can’t be the roster they take into the season. No trades. No free agent pickups. All while the Yankees are building a super team. The amount of FAs still unsigned at this time is insane.

hugo #FreeBoney

There’s lots of FAs still out there, like you said. No need to rush. They can add a bat and a LHP reliever as the market unfolds.
I’m often critical of Red Sox management but they’ve killed it so far this offseason.

All of baseball seems to be waiting for Scott Boras to get his top clients signed. J.D. Martinez, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Jake Arrieta, Greg Holland, Carlos Gonzalez, et al are waiting as the slowest free agent period in baseball history rolls on.-Nick Cafardo

I think this has a lot to job with the slow pace. Scott Boras is known for this.

The teams have wisened up about the contracts they give out. Now some FA, who were expecting to strike gold for hitting FA, as they’ve seen others do in the past…. are left holding the bag.
Its not like MLB teams won’t give out long deals. Lorenzo Cain got 5 years and $80M. They’re just exercising some common sense. The days of Free Agents getting 7 years and $100M plus for merely existing are over.

MrLucky

It is funny to see Boras get pissed that teams are being responsible and not throwing money around now. The MLBPA wants to sue the owners. For what? Not vastly overpaying mediocre players and regretting immediately

Weird basketball thought.
Ray Allen isn’t going to get his number retired by the Celtics. He isn’t going to get his number retired by the Bucks probably. Seattle doesn’t even exist anymore.
He’s a slam dunk HOFer…. and his number won’t be retired anywhere.

Jdog Lemon Head

Along similar lines, I don’t think KG should have his number tired by the Celtics. Yeah he’s a sure fire HOFer and won a ring with Celtics, but his number should be retired by the T-Wolves. If Celtics want to retire it, then why wouldn’t the Celtics have retired Bill Walton’s number? He’s a HOFer won a ring with the Celtics too.

rondo723

I mean Walton played here for 2 seasons and was a 6th man at the end of his career, while KG played here for 6 seasons and was the centerpiece to one of the best defensive teams of the era. It’s hard to argue that they had similar levels of impact in their time with the Celtics.

Semi-related but what happens to Adam Vinatieri if he goes to the HOF. Does he go in as a Patriot or Colt? Crazy that he’s spend more time with the Colts than the Patriots now. And does he get inducted to the Patriots HOF? I say yes.

I like when he attacks the basket (but doesn’t try to dunk over everyone). Not sure if it’s just part of the offense, I wish he’d cut more often. That’s one thing I loved about avery. He was awesome at the back cut. I feel like jaylen would be awesome at that because of his athleticism.

To me it seems like he can’t react to things at the speed of the game. When he knows what he wants to do, he can do it with great precision.
He’s a good example of how real IQ =/= sports IQ. Seems like a pretty bright kid for a bball player.
Meanwhile you have lunkheads like Smart and Crowder who have great basketball IQ

Jaylen is frustrating. He’s athletic but I don’t think he knows what his skillsets are. He’s too streaky of a shooter but continues to jack up 3s, esp when he’s missing a lot. His constant turnovers make me scream at the TV every time. He’s also terrible at the free throw line.
