Postseason Y Factors 2017: Patriots vs. Eagles

-by DNOMN8R314

[ED NOTE: Don’t forget to submit your prop bets contest entries before 5 PM EST!]

One more game. One more Y Factors post. One more BSJ TUMS-O-METER™ Prediction.

It’s been a fun season, and tonight it comes to its end. Let’s enjoy it.

A plea for Clement, see: The Eagles’ offensive backfield consists of, like the Patriots, a solid top three on the depth chart. While Jay Ajayi and LeGarrette Blount are the two main ballcarriers in the running game, that third running back, undrafted rookie Corey Clement, could be a sneaky player to watch out for. In the AFC Championship Game, the Jaguars successfully attacked the New England defense early with plays designed to get Corey Grant into open space, suggesting Philadelphia could go after the Patriots’ linebackers the same way with Clement. New England defenders need to be aware of which running back is in the game for the Eagles, as sleeping on even the third-string back could result in big plays for the Eagles, something no Patriot wants to allow Sunday.

Generally, Mills: While much has been made of how the early-season acquisition of Ronald Darby strengthened the Eagles’ secondary, their second cornerback Jalen Mills has been more polarizing. While Mills has been Philadelphia’s #2 corner all season, he has allowed nine touchdowns while in coverage, most in the league. The Patriots will likely target this matchup throughout, as they targeted Jalen Collins last year (would link source, but can’t remember who wrote that), with the only question being which player will be matched up with Mills. Rich Hill theorizes that New England will put Chris Hogan on Darby to give Brandin Cooks a favorable matchup with Mills, but if the Eagles keep Darby on Cooks, a healthier Hogan could have a big game (’16-’17 AFC Championship Game-level? maybe?) or possibly Phillip Dorsett, who has had an impressive week of practice. But no matter which receivers are on the field, Tom Brady will look for the best matchup and the Patriots will expect their players to perform at a high level on every play.

Special TUMS: (My apologies, the chalky stomach relief comes one paragraph down.) According to Rick Gosselin’s special teams rankings, the Patriots had the third-best third unit in the league in 2017, while the Eagles ranked 13th. However, the Patriots should remember from their last meeting with Philadelphia that a poor special teams performance can sink a game quickly. In their 2015 matchup, New England allowed touchdowns on a blocked punt and punt return (to go along with a 99-yard interception return) in their 35-28 loss to the Eagles. This season, Philadelphia tied for the league lead (with the Rams) with five blocked kicks, meaning Bill Belichick will surely have been emphasizing keeping the Eagles’ block units away from Ryan Allen and Stephen Gostkowski. That said, New England was not quiet in the kick-blocking department this season, blocking three kicks while also being one of nine teams to allow zero blocked kicks in 2017. Given Belichick’s constant emphasis on this part of the game, fans can be certain that he is well aware that Super Bowl LII could come down to one big play on special teams. We will find out Sunday night.

The Super Bowl BSJ TUMS-O-METER Prediction:
And here we are, the final game of the season. The NFL title on the line. Two fan bases hoping for a win. TUMS factories looking at a dormant season starting Monday. And so it goes. But, the game is still to be played. Anxious moments still to be had. And how will BSJ handle it all? I’m going with a gut feeling since that has served me well this year. (Ravens won’t make the playoffs. Book it! Jags will beat the Steelers. Book it!!! 5 for 5 on calling TD drives vs. TEN. Book it!!). This season’s final prediction may be a bit of a surprise, but……. 3 bottles… yes, bottles (not cases) of TUMS (mostly for pregame jitters). BOOK IT!!!!!!

While the Superbowl left a horrible aftertaste, there were nice positives this season. The questions are, with the coaching losses and many FAs in the dock, can the Patriots retool quickly or is 2018 a rebuild season? 2012 and 2013 were the closest to rebuild seasons we’ve had. It just breaks my heart to see Butler go out this way. At this point I fear he would not care signing with the Browns if it gets him away. I really want to believe that his lack of practice reps due to illness is what kept him out of the game,… Read more »

Patriots need a lot of help on the defense.
Need another edge player. Not good when Harrison can step in and be the 2nd best edge player.
Cornerback-Need a a slot cb
LB’s Hightower is always banged up but I love him. Van Noy is depth. Need more talent
Safety-Harmon is a viable centerfielder. Chung and DMC will both be 31 when the season starts. Richards needs to GO
Interior line. Have Valentine but need depth and a 3 tech

Jonathan Jones comeback will cover the slot CB position I think

I think you’re right, he’s mountains above Badamosi and Richards. Just need a few fast LBs and a big pork chop much like Wilfork to anchor the middle, preferably a vet who can mentor Valentine. I have no reason to think they won’t be in the AFC championship game this season.

Per M. Reiss (spot on again) Biggest draft need: The off-the-line linebacker position could benefit from an influx of youth and athleticism, which would also provide more scheme flexibility with captain Dont’a Hightower, who can play both on the line and off. And while it might not necessarily be a top need, the idea of trying to find the “next Jimmy Garoppolo” — meaning, a developmental quarterback — figures to be on the radar. Brady will be 41 by the time next season begins. Free-agency targets: Attempts to retain their own probably will be the top priority, as players scheduled… Read more »

Form PFF

Flowers was kept quiet throughout most of the game, but his pass-rush effectiveness started to show in the fourth quarter, primarily working against Eagles left tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai. Flowers registered five pressures but was unable to get a hit or sack on Nick Foles. Flowers and James Harrison were the only two Patriots to generate much of a pass rush, combining for 13 total pressures.

Pass rush was invisible. What else is new?

Whoever secures Butler’s signature this offseason will get one of the best playmakers available at the position, as Butler has got his hands on 35 (29 pass breakups and six interceptions) of the 285 passes that have been thrown into his coverage since 2015, giving him a playmaker index of 15.4 percent, the fourth-best mark among cornerbacks with at least 200 targets in that span. A PFF look at Butler in an article about free agents. Note the last part about playmaking and yet on a defense without many playmakers BB sits him for the game. Butler didnt have a… Read more »

Was tough to watch. When they stopped the 2 pt conversion and gave Brady the ball back down 5 I still thought they were winning. That fumble was the only way they were losing. They couldn’t stop Brady 4 straight times.

The D lost the game… no stops all game, and given that it was a shootout going back and forth, even after the offense finally got the lead, the d let the eagles go on the longest drive of the night, killing the clock and putting the game into an all or nothing situation. Yes, the eagles got the one turnover when they needed it most… which is exactly what our defense couldnt do, and exactly why the defense lost the game. Can’t expect the offense to play from behind the entire night, always playing catch up, and when they… Read more »

We are trashing the Pats D but they made even made 1 more play than the Eagles D: 1 INT and 1 punt. Eagles just got a strip sack.
Eagles couldn’t even make us punt. But the cute offensive calls and some ST blunders in the first half also cost us the points to win this game.

JLStokes

No, they were hot garbage. If Richards and Bademosi are your answer, you need to change the question.

I’ll agree that ST left points on the field, but 33 pts should win you a game. Even if ST did their jobs, it would have been 37 pts. MORE than enough to win.

SB looked liked a Cal vs.UCLA game, no defense, can’t believe they lost to a back up qb, the eagles D is not good either, they need CB help as well, it was a good move to put Jenkins on White, took him out of the game, but their deep D linemen did not have much of an impact until 2 minutes left in the game

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski dropped a bit of a bombshell in the aftermath of Sunday’s 41-33 loss to the Eagles in Super Bowl LII. During his postgame meeting with reporters, Gronkowski was asked about chatter around Minneapolis on Super Bowl Sunday that it might be his last game as an NFL player. Gronkowski, who had nine catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns, didn’t say that he would be back on the field for the 2018 season. “I don’t know how you heard that, but I mean I’m definitely gonna look at my future for sure,” Gronkowski said. “Sit… Read more »

Sorry, but no one game plans around Butler, this is not Ed Reed. But even after his decline this season, he’s simply much better than Rowe and Richards. Also, if he’s not fit enough and you activate him, put in out there on some key plays, it cannot be worse than what the other players are giving you.

Richards, 3 catches for 86(?) yards in 11 coverage snaps, that’s abysmal.

You would think with these numbers that we would sining a different tune this morning but in the end the defense really stunk. The good news is that the Patriots have three picks in the first two rounds. Brady 28-of-48 for 505 yards, with three touchdowns and no interceptions. Gronk, nine receptions for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Danny, eight receptions for 152 yards. Hogan, six catches for 128 yards and one touchdown. Not much has to be done in regard to the offense except to sign some players. The D on the other hand is a whole other can… Read more »

HT gets injured every year, so yes a couple of LB’s need to be either drafted or signed thru free agency
and yes the offense is great, however a draft pick needs to be made for a QB (this draft is deep with qb’s), Gronk mulling his future is scary, so a TE needs to be looked at and how many wr’s are over the age of 30 with Mitchell also injury prone, and what if Lewis leaves, who’s your starting rb next year?

Yeah, kinda reminds me of Mayo, great player when he can stay on the field.

In regard to Lewis, good question. They had better sign him to a long termer.

The bottom line is the Pats have no playmakers on defense. You can talk about Partricia but where were the game changers on defense this year? There were none. Gilmore was a good acquistion but that is it. You can only scheme so much to overcome the lack of talent. No draft picks and bad draft picks on defense the last four years have taken their toll. Hightower has never played a full season, Butler looks like he is a goner, Richardson and Cyrus Jones are second round busts joing Easley in that category. Chandler Jones and his 17 sacks… Read more »

Sorry, but this one’s on Bill. Replacing Butler with Rowe was a disaster. The 4th down decisions were eyebrow-raising. Tackling was abysmal. It looked like the defense was not motivated all game and that falls on the Head Coach.

For all the heat that Gilmore took, he played like a truly lockdown corner down the stretch. We just got more proof last night, unfortunately it took 15 points on the board for the coaches to make the change.

Not all the defenders suck, but they need more talent in that D, specially in the front 7 and now CB2

It’s pretty sad that a 39 year old DE was the only player that showed up last night

I thought KVN had a pretty good game.

Got held on a no call on a drive that ended in a TD too.

The Pats should have traded Butler to the Saints in the offseason and adress that CB2 spot in the draft.
The Gilmore money and not give Butler the long term deal was a big issue.

I thought that was the issues with Butler all along. That big contact to Gilmore really stung him.

If coach wants to bench a player for team rules, you do it first quarter, not the entire game

Butler did not have a good year in coverage
But he at least can tackle

He didn’t have to deliver a last second goal line INT, just some sure tackling on 3rd down

Yeah if Bedemosi makes the tackle we might be having a different conversation.
