AFC Championship Game Breakdown: Patriots vs. Jaguars

-by DFWPatsFan

Observations after rewatching the game:

FIRST QUARTER
1. First drive by Pats – Cooks catch was incredible, he beat double coverage with defenders trailing at least 2 yards. If Brady had thrown that ball a wee bit ahead of Cooks who had to adjust and catch, that was a TD. An ominous sign for Jags that they were about to get roasted in Cover 1 Man. In that same drive, on the 4th and 2 play, Dola burns the cover guy and hauls in the catch. In the 3rd and Goal, Jaguars show man coverage and suddenly drop into zone. Brady realizes Gronk is not open and starts his progressions but the Jags pass rush gets there. Jags are probably now wondering if mixing in Cover 3 zone is a good idea.
2. In the first drive by the Jaguars, Matt Patricia seems comfortable to let the Jags take the east-west crossers in lieu of the long ball down the seam. This makes the Jags offense look like the Patriots of the old, methodically dissecting the middle of the field. At one point in that drive, T.J. Yeldon was covered by Van Noy who was 2-3 yards behind when he got open in the sideline. Bortles just underthrew him. That would have been a TD since the safeties were shading to the middle of the field. That resulted in a Jags three-and-out.
3. Patriots exploit Jags man (Bouye) using Cooks in comeback routes. Jags strangely don’t press Cooks at the line, maybe respecting his speed. His motions are fluid and violent, much like Dion Lewis. One positive for the Jags: they weren’t getting fooled by James White in the backfield. White is not in his element in those sweep plays. Burkhead being dinged earlier might explain why White was used that way. Allen’s punt was average. He was probably trying to kick away from Mickens but goes out of bounds.
4. Patriots D had trouble with play-action passing. It makes sense that they would respect Fournette, but they were getting beat on fundamentals. That pass would have gone for a TD if Marqise Lee, the receiver who blocked Butler, had then blocked Harmon, instead choosing to keep running down the field. This gave DMac time to catch up. Jags got unheralded plays out of Cole and Westbrook in this game.

SECOND QUARTER
1. Corey Grant is a player the Pats would be interested in. He caught a neat checkdown and his acceleration is phenomenal. On 1st and Goal, the Pats bit heavily on play-action expecting Fournette to pound the rock. Instead, Lee passes off Marcedes Lewis to Chung who did not get there in time to make a difference. TD Jags, 7-3.
2. Patriots try out a halfback draw with Lewis who almost fumbles the ball. Shaq Mason gets pushed back into Lewis, disrupting the running lane. Jaguars still in man coverage and Hogan ran free; Aaron Colvin had to hug him. The referees did not throw a flag here, but they did talk to Colvin. Patriots punt and this time was a much better effort by Allen.
3. Jags start the drive with what worked for them: play-action screens. Grant seems to have another gear. Next play, another play-action to Fournette, this time to a wide-open Hurns. Eric Rowe got caught freezing because he thought the ball was with Fournette. In any case, the Pats front cannot stop Fournette in short-yardage situations. Next play, it was the reverse of the first play of the drive, play-action to look like a screen but the ball was with Fournette. Pats D got fooled again. Yeldon gives everyone fits, including James Harrison. DMac saves this again from being a TD. This was Harrison’s worst play of the game as he looked lazy. He makes up for it later in the game. But watching Van Noy being driven three yards into the end zone by Fournette made me think that this D is very soft. Thankfully they prove me wrong in the second half. 14-3 Jags.
4. Brady’s throw to Gronk, who took a shot from Ramsey and held on to the ball, was on the money. Jags were in Cover 3 with Myles Jack all the way into the secondary. Burkhead takes a big shot from Telvin Smith and his evening was done. Brady then gets sacked (he was dancing around hearing ghosts) and the Jags were in Cover 3 again. It makes sense why the Jags went heavy on Cover 3 after Gronk went out, Brady was having trouble finding receivers open.
5. After Allen pins them at the 23, Bortles underthrows a pass to Cole, who comes down with an amazing catch. Butler was on him and could do nothing. Reminded me of the Seattle SB with an unheard-of Chris Matthews dominating the Pats. The Jags then take two of their six penalties. One was a delay of game and the other holding. The refs are tightening up, the hold was so blatant.
6. This drive is the one where Gronk gets hurt. At the time of the game, I was livid. After rewatching it, my opinion had not changed. Barry Church was leading with his helmet. The contact may have been unintentional but the Jags want to pack big hits, and do it without regard. Leading with the helmet could be dangerous for both players – just ask Ryan Shazier. The NFL should automatically eject any player next season if they are deemed to lead with the helmet, and officials should be able to review the play if it requires a player getting tossed out. Cooks was still giving issues to Bouye, who decided to not just run him off his route but push him out of bounds altogether. While the refs by large were ignoring a lot of contact, that’s not something they will keep quiet about. Cooks had a great game, especially in this half. White runs it in for a TD, gets thrown to the ground by Myles Jack. The infamous smiling ref picture happened to break up a potentially tense situation in the end zone. Like everything in life, context matters. 14-10 Jags.
7. Jags chose to kneel down with 55 seconds and a TO remaining. For a team which is not afraid to go for it on fourth down, this was a bizarre turn of events. Even a FG here would have changed the complexion of the game. Marrone is a good coach, who suddenly goes conservative. That becomes a lot more evident in the second half.

THIRD QUARTER
1. On second and 8, I’m not sure how Tommy Bohanon got so wide open. It’s as if the D did not anticipate his route. Patricia starts blitzing Bortles more from now on. Yeldon makes a great checkdown catch and holds on to the ball. He came up big when the Jags needed him. Pats finally hold on third down. Pressure getting to Bortles and he looks uncomfortable. I’m surprised Marrone did not have screens with Yeldon since that seemed to work well in the previous drive. Lambo makes a difficult 54 yard kick look easy. 17-10 Jags.
2. The Patriots first third down conversion of the day comes in the second half on a great route by Chris Hogan with the Jaguars in Cover 3. Jags switch to man for the next pass and Cooks burns Ramsey but could not catch the ball, thrown perfectly. Phillip Dorsett came on this drive and he was open, but the safety was closer to him than Cooks. Patriots then try a screen to White, which gets sniffed out by the Jags. Then came a punt I did not agree with (later to be proven wrong): Allen pins them deep with a beautiful punt and Slater was right there for Mickens to call a fair catch.
3. Patricia gets creative with blitzes, Bortles gets sacked. A quick 3 and out. Bortles gets more uncomfortable as the game wears on.
4. Jaguars go exclusively zone on this drive. Brady cannot get anyone open. Credit to the Jaguars front four on getting pressure very early, but also credit Brady for keeping himself in poise. We will never see pure pocket passers like Brady in the NFL again.
5. Allen pins the Jaguars again, but Fournette breaks free on his second attempt. Malcom Brown was clearly held on this play, but the refs were taking it easy. Romo calls the next play perfectly: Lee in a crossing route. Butler is a step behind. The next play is a flea flicker and the Pats manage to cover the deep part of the field well while the pass rush by Flowers gets to Bortles. Fournette was proving to be elusive in this drive, getting a first down and more on a halfback toss.

FOURTH QUARTER
1. Patriots blitz Bortles on 3rd and 8 and he unloads it (smartly) to keep them in FG range. Gilmore almost blocks the FG attempt. Lambo is a good kicker; he can definitely become great if he keeps up this performance. 20-10 Jags.
2. Cooks beat up Bouye as usual in man coverage. Protection has become better for Brady. The problem with fast defenses is that they tire out soon. This drive has evidence of the fatigue. However, a great trick play goes south when Lewis fumbles. Props to Myles Jack for catching up to Lewis and stripping the ball. By possession rules, the ball is clearly a fumble. Football Zebras clearly explains why the call is correct (link): “Recovering a fumble is similar to completing the process of a catch, and when the ball came out, Lewis never regained total control prior to the ball being taken by the defender. This is a good ‘stands’ call in replay.” Myles Jack was also ruled down by virtue of being contacted by Lewis’ foot. If any other defender had picked up the ball, that was a probable TD with no Pats in the near vicinity.
3. Jags offense goes three and out, as usual. This time they did pick up the blitz on third down but DMac comes in with a clutch play to prevent Allen Hurns from advancing.
4. Jags got away with a facemask penalty on Brady’s sack. The referees were intent on keeping the laundry to the minimum. A clutch play by Dola to convert a 3rd and 18. Jags in Cover 3 here, but playing prevent. Tashaun Gipson was on Amendola and he still made the catch. Gipson is a good safety but Amendola is clearly owning him. On the flea-flicker play, Dorsett was free and Myles Jack makes up the distance. It’s rare to see an LB cover a WR that well. Reminds me of Jamie Collins (how I wish he kept his head in the game). Next pass was clearly intended for Cooks (who by the way gets bear hugged by Jalen Ramsey before the pass is there), but Dola snatches it like it belongs to him. Romo then correctly calls the crossing play for Amendola TD. 20-17 Jags.
5. Bortles was still killing the Pats D with play-action. The next play was a delayed blitz (I call it The Hightower Play since HT is known to make them) which forces Bortles to unload the ball. Gilmore is in lockstep with Dede Westbrook and almost comes down with the pick. The next incompletion looked like Chung was holding Lewis but the refs were throwing the flags only on egregious ones.
6. Big DPI on Ramsey. As observed, Jags were getting killed by Cooks in Cover 1 and by Dola/White in Cover 3. Ramsey was probably gassed by Cooks running up and down the sideline. Jags finally rush more than four the next play and Brady gets hit. That was a good call by Jags DC. The punt pins the Jags back at the 9-yard line.
7. Romo again calls the pass play correct, and Rowe made up for his earlier deficiencies by coming up with a big play. Next play, pass rush swamps Bortles (Harrison was very disruptive in the second half).
8. This is why Belichick is a genius. He chose to punt to the Jaguars and when the Jaguars punted after a three-and-out, the ST play was top notch. Dola returns the ball to the 30-yard line. Usually, around this time in a game, all the coaches do an excellent job. McDaniels calls in a screen when the Jags least anticipate it, and White takes it to the 15-yard line. Dola comes up with a diving catch (IncreDola!), and then Brady shows how to conduct a textbook QB sneak. The TD catch by IncreDola (I’m calling him with that name herewith) sealed the deal. 24-20 Pats!!!
9. Bortles comes out guns firing. The completion to Lee was a good pass in tight coverage. The next pass to Westbrook was even better, as Gilmore got caught spying the football instead of tackling the player. Bortles puts a little bit too much on the next pass, with Marquis Flowers trailing the receiver. That was a TD pass if Bortles had a little bit more time. Harrison is disrupting the line, which was inevitable in the next play which was a strip sack. Fourth and 14 for Jags, they need a TD, man-to-man cover by the Pats. Gilmore looks to DMac to make sure that he is on the right call. Bortles throws, I scream since DMac is frozen. And Gilmore comes up with one of the best PBUs I have ever seen. He did not even touch Westbrook! Jags turnover on downs.
10. Patriots need a first down to seal the game and McDaniels calls a run play on 3rd and 9. Looking at the sideline, I think he wanted to call a pass and Belichick overruled him. Develin seals the edge with a great lead block and Lewis runs for a first down. Belichick is ecstatic, rarely I have seen him this animated! The kneel-downs were probably the easiest plays for Brady this night.

Final Thoughts:
1. The Jaguars did not give up Cover 1 and go exclusively to Cover 3. They just got burned by Cooks in Cover 1 and by Dola in Cover 3. In a way, Gronk’s injury opened up Dola, since the Jags were unable to match up consistently with IncreDola. I saw Myles Jack, Telvin Smith and Colvin try and fail.
2. If Eagles need a blueprint for this game, it’s play-action passing. The Eagles have a decent run game (not as good as Jags) and can pull that off. Bortles played well yesterday, but Foles rocked the #1 D. Can he sustain in the SB atmosphere?
3. The refereeing was very lax, they allowed many plays which would have been called in the regular season. If the game was called like the regular season, I counted at least 4 penalties by the Pats and 11 by the Jags. The Jags have no reason to complain. Football Zebras breaks down all the penalties and they ranked this game as very good. As someone mentioned, NFL is headquartered in NY, has most of its officials from NY region, went after Brady on a witch hunt, but they want the Patriots to win?

Further Final Thoughts:
I’m going to miss McDaniels, to be honest. He calls a very good game but makes some mistakes. Brady covers up for it, no doubt, but the lateral to Amendola play was gutsy and almost worked. In the same vein, I will miss Patricia, as a fellow aerospace engineer. I hope he finds success in Detroit.

BSJ TUMS-O-METER Prediction – Week 1 Pre-Super Bowl Edition:
With the AFCCG over, with the Pats making it to the Superb Owl, one would think this would be an off-week for Jim. Pfffttttt!!! Between the Pro Bowl, Super Bowl hype, injury reports, and a general addiction to TUMS and all things chalk, this week’s prediction will be the baseline requirement of 1 bottle.

Rapaport is a confirmed Brady-hater and even he thinks LeBatard sucks.

Lots of chatter from the Bills beat writers that the Bills are holding a press conference on Monday because one of their players has a serious medical issue. Yikes.

I find it hard to believe Dion will not be able to get a deal with Pats. I’d see letting Gillislee go much more obvious. We should focus on keeping Lewis, Rex and White (in that order) and finding a “big” back in the draft or FA.

I mostly agree. What I would add is that the IMO I would put White ahead of Burkhead given his receiving abilities. The Patriots might be questioning Burkhead’s durability right about now.

This to me defies logic because there is testing in the NFL every week. If the NFL truly hated the Patriots and Tom Brady , would they go after him?

” During their first-round bye, Foles and the coaching staff sifted through old film to figure out the concepts and style that fit him best following struggles down the stretch. One of the key takeaways was that Foles is at his best when he’s making quick, defined reads and playing fast.” Tim McManus, ESPN

I am sure the Patriots have noticed the difference in him over the last couple of weeks and have scouted this.

Ray Lewis and Peyton Manning did it, and the media could literally care less… but with Brady it’s a big deal? Hell, Peyton sexually assaulted a team doctor at Tennessee, and literally no one cared (even now, no one cares). But sure, go after Brady.. why not.

From the Boston Herald (after the 2000 season): Belichick, the perceived catalyst of Kraft’s “momentum change,” has not only failed to arrest the Pats’ downward spiral, he has accelerated it. The Patriots got gradually worse under Carroll (going from 10-6 to 9-7 to 8-8 in his three years). Under Belichick, the team finished 5-11 in his first season. The future is not exactly bright. The Pats have a high first-round choice this year (No. 6) and could have some money to spend in free agency, but the roster has so many holes that one more offseason of personnel moves probably… Read more »

This pisses me off: Take New England’s most infamous loss: the 18-0 team that was stunned by the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. After Eli Manning connected with Plaxico Burress for the eventual game-winning touchdown, the Patriots still received the ball with roughly 30 seconds and all three timeouts, needing only 35 or so yards to get into Stephen Gostkowski’s range for a game-tying kick. If that exact scenario unfolded this season, would anyone be surprised if Brady were able to steer his team across midfield? Of course, on that February 2008 day, he threw three incompletions and… Read more »

I remember listening to him on the radio back then and he was always doom and gloom. I also remember him bullying Pete Carroll (when he was kind of a wimp). I wish he’d fought back because I always felt bad for him. Glad he eventually found his voice. 🙂

Sizing up the Patriots’ 2001 selections, he ripped the team for choosing Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who, Borges said, “is too tall to play defensive tackle and too slow slow to play defensive end.”

This is where I got the Borges blurb from. It also contains a lot of bad takes by the Boston Media about the 2001 Pats.

Something different: Coby Tippett, son of Patriots and Pro Football Hall of Famer Andre Tippett, spending some time in locker room. Tippett off to a great start to college career at Towson, and has natural link with practice squad safety David Jones, who played at Richmond.

BB better start interrogating this guy!

Great. Kyle Lauletta (QB, Richmond) loves lacrosse and his father played QB for Navy. Pencil him in as a future Patriot.

I was thinking it’s a good bet because, even if you think the Pats will win, they usually win SBs by a field goal so PHI would cover. But I wouldn’t do it because, with my luck, this would be the one they finally win in a blowout. 🙂

The first episode was good. It gives you a little bit of everything (family, training, NFL highlights). I’ve seen some people say it was an infomercial for TB12. I disagree. Sure, there were some product placements (no different from a TV show or movie). They show him at the TB12 center for a workout and getting bodywork by Alex. He describes how he met Alex while he was working on other Patriots and credits him for him being in better physical shape now than he was when he was drafted. He never actually says anything about the TB12 empire though… Read more »

This is how the episode ends (Gisele nailed it….what she said and not TB12)….. “We were just so s—–,” the quarterback said as he was driving, before adding a pair of expletives. “You were not s—–,” Gisele responded. She continued to comfort her husband of nearly nine years. “You just were not in sync yet,” she said, with soft music playing in the background. “You don’t know each other. Say, like building a relationship, the first time you meet somebody, you’re not going to be their best friend. You know? It takes time to get to know people. They’re going… Read more »

I just watched it. It was kind of interesting but not anything really unexpected. You get a little bit of an inside look at his training regimine and home life. I agree with JImbo. The Gisele quote at the end of it was the best and very fortelling of the season they’ve had.

Went to Taco Bell for lunch and they have fries there. I seriously think it may be one of the best fries I’ve had. Crispy on the outside, soft and potatoey on the inside, and then it’s seasoned with what looks like doritos nacho cheese seasoning. Comes with nacho cheese sauce. It was surprisingly awesome.

no question Butler has struggled this year. But, I still would love for them to find a way to keep him. Would i rather have Rowe or Jones play full time? I don’t know… Maybe Cyrus will finally grow up next year??

My assumption just based on skill set and experience, is Rowe gets the nod opposite Gilmore, and J Jones plays nickel. C Jones sticks around because Dola can’t field punts forever.

Pats also have Reedy as a PR.

BoSoxJim

Reedy can’t play corner. Jones (if he can stay healthy) can. His issues his rookie season was with PR, not with corner duties. Unfortunately the PR problems hurt his confidence and you can’t play corner if you don’t have that.

I think new skill players need time to adjust to TB, and TB needs time to adjust to them.

Nobody liked Edelman at the beginning (he’s no Welker!) and nobody liked Dola early on either.
