Postseason Y Factors 2017: Patriots vs. Jaguars

-by DNOMN8R314

I know we Patriots fans are all excited about the possibility of making it back to the Super Bowl after last year’s incredible finish, but focus must be on the Jaguars. They may have played a weaker schedule, they may have an inconsistent quarterback, but Jacksonville is in the AFC Championship Game and (I know this sounds obvious) you have to be a really good team to make it this far. Here are some areas which may be out of focus but which I think will be keys to the game.

Full? Back for seconds: There may be no good fullback puns, but there are good fullbacks on both rosters in James Develin and Tommy Bohanon. The Patriots and their fans are of course familiar with Develin, but Bohanon should be a familiar face as well, as he spent the first three years of his career with the Jets. While Bohanon received a 44.8 PFF grade for the season (I do not have a PFF subscription so I do not have a further breakdown of those grades), he scored three touchdowns during the regular season – interestingly, all against the Texans – and one through the air in last week’s victory over Pittsburgh. The Jaguars have used him, and New England should be aware as to how they use him in order to see which areas they can best attack Jacksonville’s offense. As for Develin, who received a much higher 78.7 grade from Pro Football Focus, the Patriots use him frequently to open holes in the running game but have also thrown to him, even splitting him out wide in some formations. It will be interesting to see if New England’s coaches use him as they have most frequently this year, as a run blocker, or if they give him routes to run as well. This could be a game where the play of the fullbacks decides the outcome.

Allen a day’s work: Along similar lines, while the athletic Jaguars’ secondary has played incredibly well in coverage of wide receivers, their defense has been exploited by tight ends throughout the year. While Jacksonville will surely focus on limiting Rob Gronkowski’s impact, the Patriots could use more 2-TE sets, which might give second tight end Dwayne Allen opportunities through the air. Allen has been a solid blocker but has disappointed in the passing game this season, catching only 10 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown in 2017. But Allen has “done his job” and worked in the role he has been assigned to this year, and I am sure he will be ready if his number is called more often Sunday.

On the edge of glory: The signing of James Harrison has strengthened New England’s defensive edge, and the front seven put forth their best showing thus far this season with an eight-sack performance against Tennessee. While Jacksonville’s offense is centered on establishing a strong run game, the Patriots can set the tone with play like last week, and one area to attack is the edge. While right tackle Jermey Parnell, a former swing tackle, has improved his play this season, rookie second-round left tackle Cam Robinson has not been as strong a lineman, posting a 40.4 PFF grade. (I know I have relied on PFF grades more frequently in this post than in others, so I’ll repeat my stance: I find PFF grades valuable but I do not see them as the be-all end-all of how to grade a player.) Whether going after Blake Bortles on passing plays or containing Fournette in the run game, the Patriots’ defensive ends and outside linebackers may find this matchup one to focus on in order to prevent the Jaguars from controlling the game.

BSJ TUMS-O-METER Prediction:
And so here we are. The AFCCG. Everything on the line to get to the Super Bowl. Playing a team that scored 45 points last week… but gave up 42, and barely scored 10 points the week before, but only gave up 3. Soooooo… which Jags team shows up? Which Bortles? And now the question is… which Brady? Oh yes… The Hand Injury. The most talked-about sports hand injury in recent memory as well the most discussed on this blog since Wyo broke his hand camping and told BSJ he’s on his own to… ooops… never mind. (But I digress. That’s a story for another day.) Then the Pats announce Drew Bledsoe will be honorary captain for the game… coincidence? Orrrrr… did BB quietly sign him as the 3rd QB? Oh, and did we mention it’s the AFCCG for all the marbles? Then there are the usual football game-within-the-game chess matchups. Pats RBs and Gronk vs the Jags LBs. O-lines vs D-lines. Special teams. In-game adjustments. Trickery and strategery by the coaches. Phew! And so, with these considerations and so much more… (we mentioned it was the AFCCG, right?)… this weeks’ prediction: a whole factory of TUMS on 24/7 production. HOWEVER: If Bledsoe leads the team charging onto the field wearing his old #11 uniform followed by Paul Pierce pushing Tom Brady in a wheelchair: 3 factories…minimum.

Just over 24 hours later and I’m officially fed up with the “refs stole the game for the Pats” bs. Got called a “typical Pats homer divorced from reality” tonight by a former neighbor and Jets fan.

I managed to convince another neighbor. He made the “but the only two teams to have only one penalty in playoff games were both the Pats…how do you explain that?” argument so I said “so…you’re arguing that there is some massive conspiracy to just hand games to the Pats to explain SEVENTEEN YEARS of success…based on the penalty totals of two games?”

Craziest Jags fan comment yet. Because it’s always the refs fault when you lose. And mark my words: no they’re not Without human referees it would be impossible to rig games. That is the only reason they have been present for the last 40 years. The switch to video/AI refereeing could have been made in the 70s and all the arguments would have been the same. And it has not happened because the NFL wants the ability to rig games, either for their deranged wrestling narratives, marketing or for the bookies. Human refs are here to stay! I think its much more complicated than people realize.
Right now they have some pretty amazing “Pitch F/X” systems that track balls and strikes. You can see maps of the strike zone for every single MLB game.
But there’s supposedly measurement error in it. The system has to be perfectly calibrated. It doesn’t account for height of the strike zone easily, and lighting changes screw with it.
In other words, its pretty damn close but not perfect. Like…. umpires. I think the good ones when compared to Pitch F/X are getting like 97% of the calls the same as Pitch F/X does.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

I mean, not every batter’s strike zone is a constant thing, right? Dude crouches a bit more after two pitches and its an ever slightly different strike zone.
I’m not sold on the need to replace MLB umpires, personally. I think it’s a difficult thing to get 100% perfect.Report

hugowasmyhomeboy
Member
Free agent

I’ve read a bunch about Pitch F/X’s methodology because it’s had some interesting effects on the sport.
For ex. being able to quantify balls+strikes gave the teams a way to try and measure which catchers steal strikes, and which ones are bad at receiving the ball.Report

No shit. While we’re at the cusp of machines beating humans in games like Go and Chess, we only just managed to create AI programs which outperformed humans in a reading comprehension test. That too barely (82.3% humans vs 82.4% AI). We have a long way to go for judgment calls.Report

When the stakes are high it is very tempting to try to convert 4th down plays. There was a similar instance in the championship game two years ago, and instead of getting a FG out of it they turned it over on downs, and gave Peyton the ball back with relatively short fields. Considering that Gost bricked an XP prior to all that, though, I understood the logic behind the decisions.

There was a lot of time left on the clock in both scenarios, though. I was totally fine with the decision of punting itReport
