Know Thy Enemy: Jaguars Defense

-by memokerobi

First of all, apologies for not being able to continue my All-22 series. I enjoyed working on those but they took time and I was very busy so I had to stop. However, I’m back for the AFC Championship Game and I think you guys will enjoy reading this one. I watched the Jaguars defense vs the 49ers and Steelers in depth and have become more familiar with their D now (even though it was only 2 games). I will do my best to familiarize you guys with their defense as well. I present to you: The Jacksonville Jaguars Defense.

Base Defense:
4-3 Under (3-tech DT to the weak side of the offense, 1-tech to the strong side).

Starters:
End: #93 Calais Campbell, #91 Yannick Ngakoue
Tackle: #95 Abry Jones (1-tech), #97 Malik Jackson (3-tech)
Linebackers: #50 Telvin Smith (WLB), #51 Paul Posluszny (MLB), #44 Myles Jack (SLB)
Secondary: #20 Jalen Ramsey (CB), #21 A.J. Bouye, #39 Tashaun Gipson (FS), #42 Barry Church (SS)

They almost exclusively play Cover 3 and Cover 1 (like Seattle and Atlanta, for instance). For their nickel package, they sub out Poslusnzy and insert nickelback #22 Aaron Colvin, and sub out Jones and insert former first rounder DE #56 Dante Fowler Jr., s Campbell inside. Even in obvious passing situations where opponents have 4 WRs on the field, they stick to their nickel package as they trust the speed and athleticism of their linebackers.
In short yardage situations, they put their 4 DTs including #99 Marcell Dareus on the line, move both safeties in the box and a corner plays as a single high safety. Both CBs, both safeties, Smith and Jack play almost every snap. The D-line rotation has Fowler, Dareus and to a lesser degree rookie #94 Dawuane Smoot.

Now, let’s get down to game film. Needless to say, their D-line is scary. Watch Malik Jackson in the play below, he is shoved by one of the top OGs in the game, David DeCastro (#66), and then cut-blocked by Marcus Gilbert (#77), but he barely loses speed and brings Le’Veon Bell down for minimal gain. That’s an absurd play.

Here is another play that is wrecked by the D-line. It’s 3rd and short and the Jags have the short yardage package I mentioned above on the field. SF plans to have 2 guys block Campbell but he tosses aside Joe Staley (#74) and ploughs through the other blocker. Dareus puts the center on skates and pushes him a couple yards behind the LOS. Nowhere to go for the RB.

Their linebackers’ speed is also clearly evident on film, especially Smith. Look at the speed of Smith (LB lined up over the center) when he runs to take away the deep crosser of the bootleg. He is running faster than a WR! Impressive. In the second clip, he pursues a toss play from behind catches Bell from behind for a TFL, he is moving faster than everyone else involved in the play. If you want to see a glimpse of Myles Jack’s speed and athleticism, watch his interception of Big Ben in the first quarter (link).

Run Game:

The athleticism of their D-line and the speed of their linebackers allow the Jags to play very fast and aggressive on the front seven. Here are a couple of plays where you can see the speed and aggressiveness of the front seven. Watch how they beat their blockers outside and swarm the ball on outside runs. It is extremely difficult to run the ball outside on this defense.

#1: Barry Church beats the TE to the outside and forces Carlos Hyde inside. Abry Jones pushes the center and clogs the cutback lane and Smith and Jack are already there. Nowhere to run.

#2: Every blocker is beat to the sidelines by the flowing LBs. When the runner cuts inside, the pursuit is already there, he is swarmed and taken down.

This aggressiveness and speed are vulnerable to cutbacks and misdirection plays. The LBs sometimes overshoot gaps “guessing” where the run will go. I think this is the biggest reason why the Jags aren’t one of the top run defenses in the league. They absolutely have the talent but in my opinion they are too aggressive. Both the 49ers and the Steelers, especially the Niners, used counters and misdirections to take advantage of the aggressiveness of the defense. Two examples below:

In this play, Smith is probably responsible for the B gap (I can’t be 100% sure; they might also be running a stunt). Like he did in the toss play, he tries to use his speed to run around the edge but Bell takes the ball for 20 yards through the B gap Smith vacated.

Here’s another play where the Jags allow a big run to Bell. The D crashes to the playside, Jackson penetrates from the 3tech. Fowler and Smith also crash the play from the weakside. Bell cuts it back with Church taken over by the TE, and hits the hole for a big gain.

Pass Game:

I don’t have to tell or put clips here that tell you their corners cover well. It is difficult to beat them through your WRs if you don’t have Antonio Brown (hint: we don’t). This is why the 49ers game was telling for me. When the Jags D was in zone coverage, San Francisco used at least one receiver to stretch the field vertically almost every play. They attacked the space behind the linebackers and in front of the deep third defenders (2 CBs and the safety). The Jags adjusted by dropping the LBs deep and the Niners happily took the checkdowns to the RB for 5-10 easy yards. Jacksonville also played the LBs deep on their zone looks in the Pittsburgh game (because they were playing ahead and were mainly concerned with preventing big plays, which they couldn’t), and Ben Roethlisberger completed lots of short passes and checkdowns to Eli Rogers and Bell.

Examples:

Linebackers drop deep, checkdown to Bell:

To Hyde:

In this play, the Niners use play action and then the outside left receiver runs a go route to the inside which stretches the defense, and the deep crosser from the right side of the formation is wide open. But Jimmy Garoppolo misses it big time:

The Steelers run an almost identical play and Big Ben doesn’t miss.

As I mentioned earlier, San Francisco used a lot of misdirection plays. I think it will be a big part of the Patriots’ game plan. Two big plays that come of PA misdirection plays:

I don’t have any videos for man coverage but its fairly simple. It will come down to Pats RBs, Gronk and Amendola vs Jaguars LBs and safeties. The Pats cannot keep the ball moving consistently if they rely on Cooks and Hogan. I think this is where the game will be won or lost (the trenches as well of course).

Overall, I think it will be a gameplan with lots of trickery and lots of short passes by the Pats. They will be able to move the ball against this defense but the first couple drives might be ugly to set some things up for later. I also expect at least 1 INT from Brady (hopefully not). He will probably attempt more than 50 passes. I may be horribly wrong here but I think the Pats will throw out some looks with Dwayne Allen lined up as a fullback in the backfield. If Allen isn’t involved in this gameplan, it won’t look good for his future as a Patriot. Red zone offense and avoiding multiple turnovers will be extremely important (as they always are). I expect New England to score over 20 points but it may be one of those games where they find their rhythm late in the game.

I hope you got a more detailed picture of the Jags defense and enjoyed the piece. I rushed it a little but I think you guys will like it.

My prediction: Patriots 24, Jaguars 20

Specific prediction: I noticed the Jags run a lot of Cover 6 in the red zone in obvious passing situations. If that is the case again on Sunday, there will be a TD catch by a Pats receiver who is lined up in the slot on a corner route.

GO PATS!

I’m always fascinated by the Toradol angle in the NFL. It basically lasts for half of a game, so the decision has to be made whether to take it in the first half, or the second half. I’m convinced that a lot of second half meltdowns are from teams that came out strong, on Toradol for the first half.Report
