Postseason Y Factors 2017: Patriots vs. Titans

-by DNOMN8R314

Let’s get all the “playoffs” cliches out of the way:

  • Can’t underestimate opponents
  • Lose and you go home
  • Every player matters
  • “we play for this moment”

Much better.

I’ve got brass in pocket: The Titans’ two young offensive stars are quarterback Marcus Mariota and running back Derrick Henry, and keeping both of them contained will be a key focus of the Patriots’ defense. Henry thrives on outside runs, especially to the left side, while Mariota’s mobility makes him a threat to buy extra time to throw and pick up yards with his legs. Tennessee’s offensive line, while down from 2016, was among the best in the league last season, so the entire defensive front will need to play at the top of their game to keep the Titans from controlling the clock. In particular, players on the defensive edge, such as defensive ends Trey Flowers and Eric Lee and linebackers Kyle Van Noy and James Harrison, will have to keep their containment in order to prevent Mariota or Henry from creating big plays.

Rishard of glass: While the Titans’ receiving corps is centered around tight end Delanie Walker and top receiver Eric Decker, with emerging rookie Taywan Taylor and first-round speedster Corey Davis also in the conversation, steady #2 wideout Rishard Matthews should not be forgotten. The former Dolphin signed with Tennessee over New England during 2016 free agency and has been a reliable target for Mariota, catching 118 passes for 1,740 yards and 13 touchdowns in his two seasons as a Titan. In his last game against New England, in 2015, Matthews caught seven passes for 62 yards. Bill Belichick and Matt Patricia will make sure the secondary does not overlook him. (By the way, I am not trying to imply with this section’s heading that Matthews is fragile. “Shard of glass” was the best pun I could come up with.)

Savor receipts: Of course, the receiver the Patriots ended up signing in 2016 as their #2 wideout was Chris Hogan, who has missed the second half of 2017 due to injury but is at full strength for Saturday night. With Hogan’s return, the Patriots can go back to their top trio of receivers with Brandin Cooks, Hogan, and Amendola. Cooks’ catch rate has been down in December, but Hogan is an improvement on fill-ins Phillip Dorsett and Kenny Britt, and any focus he draws could help open up room where Cooks can thrive. Add that to Tom Brady’s success throwing to his running backs this year and the enormous presence of Rob Gronkowski, and even in the forecast of rain, the passing game could find plenty of ways to shine.

Divisional BSJ TUMS-O-METER Prediction:
And so it begins. Another playoff quest for the Super Bowl by the Patriots. Which means BSJ is in prime TUMS season. This week the Pats meet the resilient Titans who overcame a 21-3 deficit on the road at the Chiefs. With the bye week, the Pats seemed to get healthier (BSJ translation: they got rusty!!). The Pats’ porous run defense will need to contain Henry. Did the Pats circle the wagons over the ESPN article? And which Mariota will we get? Oh hell, does this all matter? Of course not!!!! It’s BSJ dealing with the playoffs. Prediction: 3 cases.

@Cqrun

My dad initially professed that we wouldn’t be buying a “new” car this year, but after spending 2 1/2 hours of driving in terrible conditions last night, he finally caved in and told me to start looking for ones again. Our current one is like 17 years old with a lot of malfunctioning features. I think the most we’ll get for it is $300 CAD ($200 USD or so).

Best of luck with the search. Feel free to ask questions. I have done a lot of research on different cars over the years. If it will be a multi-use car (not just for a college student) Subaru makes some reliable cars too.

I just read the article on clock management by the Steelers in PFT. I noticed that Saints were equally bad. Why the heck was the guy running out of bounds in the final Saints drive when they were already in FG range?! If he had stayed in bounds, they could have bled out at least a few seconds off the clock or forced the Vikes to use their last timeout.

Civics before 2013 might be an option. Fits are a reliable car too. If you want something more sporty, Mercedes C300, but that might be a 2008 or 2007 rather than a 2009.

Good. Do not rush out and buy something. If you plan on financing through the dealer, understand the price points for $10K at different APRs. You may agree on a price with a salesman, but the financing is a second negotiation.

cqrun

One thing to keep in mind is if you are looking at trade-ins, they often are willing to drop the price significantly if the car has been on the lot for a while. It costs money to take it to auction and they would rather sell it from the lot. I bought my first car for almost 25% below sticker price b/c the car had been on the lot for a month and they wanted to get rid of it.

Seen a Mazda 3 (2014 model) that fits that scenario to a T, funnily enough.

The worst they can say is no, but tell them your budget is $9K.
And that is a reliable car too. My brother had one for a while. Drove it a lot on icy roads etc.

Local media still scratching their heads over where McD will go, but all are resigned to the fact that we are losing both coordinators. I didn’t know that interviews can happen again in the first week after the conference championship if your team is going to the SB. I would think that’s when all the game plans are developed so didn’t realize there was time for that.

The Giants beat New England in two Super Bowls by a combined 7 points. That was with one of the best/fastest 4 man rush defenses we’ve seen and a very clutch (at least for these two games) Eli Manning. The Jags defense is very good, but I don’t see them being able to consistently run a NASCAR package, nor do I think Bortles can play the way Eli played in those two games.

I don’t think this game is going to be easy, but Coughlin gives them no advantage.

Time for dinner. I think the Pats are in a good place. The Jags are a tough lot, but they don’t have a lot of weapons on offense. If the Pats O-line plays like it did Saturday, this should be a done deal. I’m thinking it will be a lower scoring game, like 23-16 or something. Then again, in spite of Tomlin’s brain, the Stillers put up 35 points on them.

Good night, you 47 second geniuses!!!

If he fell off the cliff, then why would he look good now….in the cold?

Saying Brady hasn’t looked good in 7 weeks just proves all he does is look at box scores. The one game where he played poorly was Miami. The place where he often struggles in late Dec/Jan and then add the fact that he didn’t have Gronk or Hogan (or Edelman) and the other receivers couldn’t get open.

But hey, why let facts get in the way of his story?
